An Assembly Language I.D.E. To Engage Students Of All Levels: Tutorial Presentation, Pete Sanderson, Kenneth Vollmar
An Assembly Language I.D.E. To Engage Students Of All Levels: Tutorial Presentation, Pete Sanderson, Kenneth Vollmar
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
MIPS assembly language is widely taught in computer organization and related courses due to its elegant design and ease of learning. In this workshop, participants will explore varied uses of the MARS integrated development environment (IDE) and simulator for MIPS assembly language programming. Basic exploration is guided by a set of MIPS programming exercises to illustrate MARS use and its extensive and intuitive interactive debugging capabilities. The next level of exploration will introduce MARS "tools", applications that can interact with executing MIPS programs by observing the simulated MIPS memory and registers. Exercises will demonstrate how currently-available MARS tools can be …

The Effects Of The Use Of Dynamic Geometry Software On Student Achievement And Interest, Heidi B. Hansen
The Effects Of The Use Of Dynamic Geometry Software On Student Achievement And Interest, Heidi B. Hansen
Mathematics Graduate Theses
This study examines the current research that exists on the effects that the use of dynamic geometry software has on student achievement and interest level in mathematics. Additional questions examined are whether using dynamic geometry software has a greater impact on high or low achievers, and what current methods of implementation are suggested by the research. A review of the relevant literature indicates that the use of dynamic geometry software does have a positive effect on student achievement, particularly achievement in areas of high-level thinking. Insufficient research has been done on the effect that the use of dynamic geometry software …

Zeros Of Functions With Finite Dirichlet Integral, William T. Ross, Stefan Richter, Carl Sundberg
Zeros Of Functions With Finite Dirichlet Integral, William T. Ross, Stefan Richter, Carl Sundberg
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
In this paper, we refine a result of Nagel, Rudin, and Shapiro (1982) concerning the zeros of holomorphic functions on the unit disk with finite Dirichlet integral.

The Backward Shift On The Space Of Chauchy Transforms, William T. Ross, Joseph A. Cima, Alec L. Matheson
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
This note examines the subspaces of the space of Cauchy transforms of measures on the unit circle that are invariant under the backward shift operator f --> z-1 (f—f (0)). We examine this question when the space of Cauchy transforms is endowed with both the norm and weak* topologies.

If μis a finite compactly supported measure on C, then the set Sμ of multiplication operators Mᵩ : L2 (μ) --> L2 (μ), Mᵩ f = ᵩ f, where ᵩ ϵ L ∞ (μ) is injective on a set of full μ measure, is the complete set of cyclic multiplication operators on L2 (μ) In this paper, we explore the question as to whether or not Sμ has a common cyclic vector

A Comparative Analysis Of Japanese And U.S. Teaching Styles Of Mathematics, Timothy Michael Wurdock
A Comparative Analysis Of Japanese And U.S. Teaching Styles Of Mathematics, Timothy Michael Wurdock
Mathematics Graduate Theses
This study examines the effects of different international teaching styles on the performance of junior high school students. Japanese students ranked higher than U.S. students on international tests. The whole-class method and open-ended problems are techniques frequently used in Japanese classrooms. These techniques will be incorporated into the author’s curriculum to determine their effectiveness in teaching mathematics. Two eighth grade classes will be studied. The author will teach the experimental group using the whole-class method. The control group will be taught using the American method.

Mean-Square Error Bounds And Perfect Sampling For Conditional Coding, Xiangchen Cui
Mean-Square Error Bounds And Perfect Sampling For Conditional Coding, Xiangchen Cui
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In this dissertation, new theoretical results are obtained for bounding convergence and mean-square error in conditional coding. Further new statistical methods for the practical application of conditional coding are developed.
Criteria for the uniform convergence are first examined. Conditional coding Markov chains are aperiodic, π-irreducible, and Harris recurrent. By applying the general theories of uniform ergodicity of Markov chains on general state space, one can conclude that conditional coding Markov chains are uniformly ergodic and further, theoretical convergence rates based on Doeblin's condition can be found.
Conditional coding Markov chains can be also viewed as having finite state space. …

Pseudocontinuations And The Backward Shift, William T. Ross, Alexandru Aleman, Stefan Richter
Pseudocontinuations And The Backward Shift, William T. Ross, Alexandru Aleman, Stefan Richter
Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
In this paper, we will examine the backward shift operator Lf = (f −f(0))/z on certain Banach spaces of analytic functions on the open unit disk D. In particular, for a (closed) subspace M for which LM Ϲ M, we wish to determine the spectrum, the point spectrum, and the approximate point spectrum of L│M. In order to do this, we will use the concept of “pseudocontinuation" of functions across the unit circle T.
We will first discuss the backward shift on a general Banach space of analytic functions and then for the weighted …

History Of Fermat's Last Theorem, Amanda Brown
History Of Fermat's Last Theorem, Amanda Brown
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Around 1637, Pierre de Fermat made a now-famous mathematical conjecture. However, Fermat's conjecture neither began nor ended with him. Fermat's last theorem, as the conjecture is called, has roots approximately 3600 years old. The proof of the theorem was not realized until 1994, over 350 years after it was proposed by Fermat.
