Connecting Number Theory With High School Mathematics, Andre Richmond Jan 2023

Connecting Number Theory With High School Mathematics, Andre Richmond

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Number theory is the study of natural numbers and one of the oldest branches of mathematics. Elementary number theory concepts are integrated into K-12 learning experience. This paper will identify ideas and methods in elementary number theory that could be connected to K-12 education and taught in high school classrooms. In fact, Common Core Standards in Mathematics include some basic concepts and skills in elementary number theory. In this study, we will focus on the greatest common divisor, Euclid's algorithm, least common multiple, factorization and divisibility criteria (divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 11). We hope …

An Exploratory Study On Methods For Interpolating And Extrapolating Baseball Win-Loss Percentage, Giselle Palacios Jan 2023

An Exploratory Study On Methods For Interpolating And Extrapolating Baseball Win-Loss Percentage, Giselle Palacios

All Student Theses and Dissertations

The 2020 Major League Baseball season was shortened by a few months due to travel restrictions implemented in response to Coronavirus pandemic. When baseball began in mid-July, the schedule had been changed so that teams were mostly playing against division opponents. This left some fans wondering how different the 2020 season would have looked if the original schedule of 162 games were played. A website called Strat-O-Matic used the Monte Carlo method to simulate a full 2020 season. This paper proposes and explores other possible models for predicting the outcome of the season. The first model we present is a …

Co-Designing Elementary-Level Computer Science And Mathematics Lessons: An Expansive Framing Approach, Umar Shehzad, Jody Clarke-Midura, Kimberly Beck, Jessica Shumway, Mimi Recker Jan 2023

Co-Designing Elementary-Level Computer Science And Mathematics Lessons: An Expansive Framing Approach, Umar Shehzad, Jody Clarke-Midura, Kimberly Beck, Jessica Shumway, Mimi Recker

Publications

This study examines how a rural-serving school district aimed to provide elementary-level computer science (CS) by offering instruction during students’ computer lab time. As part of a research-practice partnership, cross-context mathematics and CS lessons were co-designed to expansively frame and highlight connections across – as opposed to integration within – the two subjects. Findings indicated that most students who engaged with the lessons across the lab and classroom contexts reported finding the lessons interesting, seeing connections to their mathematics classes, and understanding the programming. In contrast, a three-level logistic regression model showed that students who only learned about mathematics connections …

Supporting Spatial Reasoning: Identifying Aspects Of Length, Area, And Volume In Textbook Definitions, Eryn M. Stehr Maher, Jia He Jan 2023

Supporting Spatial Reasoning: Identifying Aspects Of Length, Area, And Volume In Textbook Definitions, Eryn M. Stehr Maher, Jia He

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Length, area, and volume share structural similarities enabling flexibility in reasoning for real-world applications. Deep understanding of structures can help teachers connect these concepts to support their students’ mathematical reasoning and practices involving real-world situations. In mathematics textbooks designed for future teachers, definitions of length, area, and volume vary from procedural (e.g., use a ruler to measure side lengths, use formulas to calculate measures) to conceptual (e.g., construct appropriate n-dimensional units that tessellate the n-dimensional space) to formal (e.g., construct a function mapping qualitative size to a quantity of appropriate units). Most textbooks describe length, area, and volume …

A Covariance Formula For The Number Of Excursion Set Components Of Gaussian Fields And Applications, Dmitry Beliaev, Michael Mcauley, Stephen Muirhead Jan 2023

A Covariance Formula For The Number Of Excursion Set Components Of Gaussian Fields And Applications, Dmitry Beliaev, Michael Mcauley, Stephen Muirhead

Articles

We derive a covariance formula for the number of excursion or level set components of a smooth stationary Gaussian field on Rd contained in compact domains. We also present two applications of this formula: (1) for fields whose correlations are integrable we prove that the variance of the component count in large domains is of volume order and give an expression for the leading constant, and (2) for fields with slower decay of correlation we give an upper bound on the variance which is of optimal order if correlations are regularly varying, and improves on best-known bounds if correlations …

Not Your Typical Tower Of Sauron, John Adam Jan 2023

Not Your Typical Tower Of Sauron, John Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The picture is of the tapering Chester Shot Tower, located in Chester, England. It was built in 1799 for the manufacture of lead shot for use in the Napoleonic Wars. Molten lead was poured through a sieve at the top of the tower, with the tiny droplets forming perfect spheres during the fall; these were then cooled in a vat of water at the base. This process was less labor intensive than an earlier method using molds. It is the oldest of the three remaining shot towers in the UK.

Question 1: Using the parked van at the base, estimate …

Jet Noise Reduction: A Fresh Start, Christopher K. Tam, Fang Q. Hu Jan 2023

Jet Noise Reduction: A Fresh Start, Christopher K. Tam, Fang Q. Hu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Attempts to reduce jet noise began some 70 years ago. In the literature, there have been many publications written on this topic. By now, it is common knowledge that jet noise consists of a number of components. They possess different spectral and radiation characteristics and are generated by different mechanisms. It appears then that one may aim at the suppression of the noise of a single component instead of trying to reduce jet noise overall. The objective of the present project is to reduce large turbulence structures noise. It is the most dominant noise component radiating in the downstream direction. …

Charging Of Irregularly-Shaped Dust Grains Near Surfaces In Space, David Lund, Xiaoming He, Daoru Han Jan 2023

Charging Of Irregularly-Shaped Dust Grains Near Surfaces In Space, David Lund, Xiaoming He, Daoru Han

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents fully kinetic numerical investigation of the charging of dust grains in low temperature collision less plasmas (stationary) and collision less, cold-ion thermal-electron drifting plasmas. the Parallel Immersed-Finite-Element Particle-in-Cell (PIFE-PIC) code is utilized to self-consistently resolve the plasma environment and charging of immersed materials. This model explicitly includes the materials property (dielectric constant) of dust grains. Effects of materials property, inter-dust distance, and plasma conditions (stationery and drifting) will be investigated for both single-dust and multi-dust configurations.

Spectral Sequences And Khovanov Homology, Zachary J. Winkeler Jan 2023

Spectral Sequences And Khovanov Homology, Zachary J. Winkeler

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

In this thesis, we will focus on two main topics; the common thread between both will be the existence of spectral sequences relating Khovanov homology to other knot invariants. Our first topic is an invariant MKh(L) for links in thickened disks with multiple punctures. This invariant is different from but inspired by both the Asaeda-Pryzytycki-Sikora (APS) homology and its specialization to links in the solid torus. Our theory will be constructed from a Z^n-filtration on the Khovanov complex, and as a result we will get various spectral sequences relating MKh(L) to Kh(L), AKh(L), and APS(L). Our …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Using Culturally Relevant Education Practices To Teach Middle-Grades Mathematics, Lorna Bridgetnal Randle Jan 2023

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Using Culturally Relevant Education Practices To Teach Middle-Grades Mathematics, Lorna Bridgetnal Randle

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractAfrican American students and other students of color are not experiencing equitable learning outcomes in mathematics classrooms. The problem this study investigated was if and how teachers used culturally relevant education to help increase learning opportunities for African American students. This basic qualitative study aimed to explore teachers' perceptions of how they use culturally relevant education instructional practices to teach mathematics to middle-grade African American students. Further, teachers’ perceptions of their preparedness to use culturally relevant education practices were explored. Aronson and Laughter’s theory of culturally relevant education framed the study and guided data analysis. The research questions investigated if …

How Elementary Teachers Implement The Eureka Mathematics Curriculum To Improve Mathematics Outcomes, Shannell A. Swan-Clarke

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many states use research-based mathematics curricula as an instructional tool to improve mathematics performance outcomes on state assessment scores. The problem was that despite the implementation of a research-based curriculum, students at XYZ Elementary School (pseudonym) had underperformed on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers standardized mathematics tests since 2018. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to discover the implementation practices of teachers using the Eureka Mathematics Curriculum to improve student outcomes at XYZ Elementary School. Dewey’s experiential learning theory was used to support and explore ideas involving the influences of curriculum implementation on …

Classification On Boundary-Equilibria And Singular Continuums Of Continuous Piecewise Linear Systems, Hebai Chen, Zhaosheng Feng, Hao Yang, Linfeng Zhou Jan 2023

Classification On Boundary-Equilibria And Singular Continuums Of Continuous Piecewise Linear Systems, Hebai Chen, Zhaosheng Feng, Hao Yang, Linfeng Zhou

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we show that any switching hypersurface of n -dimensional continuous piecewise linear systems is an (n−1) -dimensional hyperplane. For two-dimensional continuous piecewise linear systems, we present local phase portraits and indices near the boundary equilibria (i.e. equilibria at the switching line) and singular continuum (i.e. continuum of nonisolated equilibria) between two parallel switching lines. The index of singular continuum is defined. Then we show that boundary-equilibria and singular continuums can appear with many parallel switching lines.

Kōlams In Graph Theory: Mathematics In South Indian Ritual Art, Nathan Hartmann Jan 2023

Kōlams In Graph Theory: Mathematics In South Indian Ritual Art, Nathan Hartmann

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Kōlams are a ritual art form found in India, most commonly in the southern state
of Tamil Nadu. Comprised of different interlocking knots, these women-drawn designs are placed on the entrances to people’s home to showcase the household’s emotional state and ask the earth goddess Bhūdevi for forgiveness. More aesthetically pleasing kōlams are considered latshanam, where the design permeates beauty; monolinearity is one such aspect that implements latshanam. Using graph theory, we examine one style of these drawings, the labyrinthine variety, to identify if a given kōlam is monolinear and how to construct monolinear kōlams.

Efficient High Order Ensemble For Fluid Flow, John Carter Jan 2023

Efficient High Order Ensemble For Fluid Flow, John Carter

Doctoral Dissertations

"This thesis proposes efficient ensemble-based algorithms for solving the full and reduced Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. The proposed ensemble methods require solving only one linear system with multiple right-hand sides for different realizations, reducing computational cost and simulation time. Four algorithms utilize a Generalized Positive Auxiliary Variable (GPAV) approach and are demonstrated to be second-order accurate and unconditionally stable with respect to the system energy through comprehensive stability analyses and error tests. Two algorithms make use of Artificial Compressibility (AC) to update pressure and a solenoidal constraint for the magnetic field. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate theoretical results and demonstrate …

Some 2-Color Rado Numbers For A Linear Equation With A Negative Constant, Rachel Bergjord Jan 2023

Some 2-Color Rado Numbers For A Linear Equation With A Negative Constant, Rachel Bergjord

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An r-coloring is a function Δ that assigns a color to each natural number from 1 to some number n using colors 0, 1, . . . , r − 1. A monochromatic solution (in Δ) to an equation L with m variables is an ordered m-tuple (x1, x2, . . . , xm) where Δ(x1) = Δ(x2) = · · · = Δ(xm) and (x1, x2, . . . , xm−1, xm) solves L. Given a linear equation L and t ∈ N, the t-color Rado number for L is the least integer n (if it exists) such that …

New Similarity And Entropy Measures Of Temporal Complex Neutrosophic Set And Its Application In Multi-Criteria Decision Making, Luong Thi Hong Lan, Nguyen Tho Thong, Nguyen Long Giang, Florentin Smarandache, Vo Si Nam, Dinh Van Dzung

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The Temporal complex neutrosophic set (TCNS) is an effective structure for resolving information that has uncertain, indeterminate, and timerelated factors in decision-making problems. In the last decade, many researchers focused on estimating the vagueness and ambiguity in knowledge using the theory of neutrosophic sets or extensions of neutrosophic sets. Similarity and entropy measures are valuable tools to measure information with the aim of dealing with real-life multi-criteria decisionmaking (MCDM) problems. However, the existing method did not care or interest in the information measures of TCNS. This paper proposes several new similarity and entropy measures under the TCNS environment. The suggested …
