Triangular Modular Curves Of Low Genus And Geometric Quadratic Chabauty, Juanita Duque Rosero Jan 2023

Triangular Modular Curves Of Low Genus And Geometric Quadratic Chabauty, Juanita Duque Rosero

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

This manuscript consists of two parts. In the first part, we study generalizations of modular curves: triangular modular curves. These curves have played an important role in recent developments in number theory, particularly concerning hypergeometric abelian varieties and approaches to solving generalized Fermat equations. We provide a new result that shows that there are only finitely many Borel-type triangular modular curves of any fixed genus, and we present an algorithm to list all such curves of a given genus.

In the second part of the manuscript, we explore the problem of computing the set of rational points on a smooth, …

On The Uniqueness Of Continuation Of A Partially Defined Metric, Evgeniy Petrov Jan 2023

On The Uniqueness Of Continuation Of A Partially Defined Metric, Evgeniy Petrov

Theory & Applications of Graphs

The problem of continuation of a partially defined metric can be efficiently studied using graph theory. Let G=G(V,E) be an undirected graph with the set of vertices V and the set of edges E. A necessary and sufficient condition under which the weight w : E → R+ on the graph G has a unique continuation to a metric d : V x V → R+ is found.

On Rainbow Cycles And Proper Edge Colorings Of Generalized Polygons, Matt Noble Jan 2023

On Rainbow Cycles And Proper Edge Colorings Of Generalized Polygons, Matt Noble

Theory & Applications of Graphs

An edge coloring of a simple graph G is said to be proper rainbow-cycle-forbidding (PRCF, for short) if no two incident edges receive the same color and for any cycle in G, at least two edges of that cycle receive the same color. A graph G is defined to be PRCF-good if it admits a PRCF edge coloring, and G is deemed PRCF-bad otherwise. In recent work, Hoffman, et al. study PRCF edge colorings and find many examples of PRCF-bad graphs having girth less than or equal to 4. They then ask whether such graphs exist having girth greater than …

We Are Still Playing: A Meta-Analysis Of Game-Based Learning In Mathematics Education, Thomas Conmy Jan 2023

We Are Still Playing: A Meta-Analysis Of Game-Based Learning In Mathematics Education, Thomas Conmy

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate the effectiveness of the use of games as part of mathematics instruction on academic achievement in grades Kindergarten to 12 in the United States. There were 17 studies selected for investigation published from 2010 to 2023 that focused on game-based learning and mathematics. This meta-analysis fills the gap in the knowledge by examining classes that are using game based learning across three platforms of instruction: nondigital games, digital on computers, and mobile devices. The findings from this meta-analysis suggest that the usage of game-based learning in a classroom has a positive effect …

Early Termination In Phase Ii Clinical Trials: Admissible Designs Using Decreasingly Informative Priors, Chen Wang Jan 2023

Early Termination In Phase Ii Clinical Trials: Admissible Designs Using Decreasingly Informative Priors, Chen Wang

Theses and Dissertations

In Phase II clinical trials, Thall and Simon’s Bayesian posterior probability design is commonly implemented to allow for an early termination to determine whether a new treatment warrants further investigation in a larger-scale Phase III trial; this in turn requires a pre-selected prior distribution based on known clinical opinion or historical information. Moreover, this Bayesian approach can result in an issue of inflating type I error rate by monitoring interim data to inform early termination decisions. Alternatively, a Bayesian approach with the decreasingly informative prior (DIP), which is an informative yet skeptical prior, can be implemented to overcome the contentious …

Selected Problems In Graph Coloring, Hudson Lafayette Jan 2023

Selected Problems In Graph Coloring, Hudson Lafayette

Theses and Dissertations

The Borodin–Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph G, if ∆(G) ≥ 9 and ω(G) ≤ ∆(G) − 1, then χ(G) ≤ ∆(G) − 1. We prove the Borodin–Kostochka Conjecture for (P5, gem)-free graphs, i.e., graphs with no induced P5 and no induced K1 ∨P4.

For a graph G and t, k ∈ Z+ at-tone k-coloring of G is a function f : V (G) → [k] such that |f(v) ∩f (w)| < d(v,w) for all distinct v, w ∈ V(G). The t-tone chromatic number of G, denoted τt(G), is the minimum k such that G is t-tone k-colorable. For small values of t, we prove sharp or nearly sharp upper bounds on the t-tone chromatic number of various classes of sparse graphs. In particular, we determine τ2(G) exactly when mad(G) < 12/5 and also determine τ2(G), up to a small additive constant, when G is outerplanar. Finally, we determine τt(Cn) exactly when t ∈ {3, 4, 5}.

Effects Of Slip On Highly Viscous Thin-Film Flows Inside Vertical Tubes (Constant Radius, Constricted And Flexible), Mark S. Schwitzerlett Jan 2023

Effects Of Slip On Highly Viscous Thin-Film Flows Inside Vertical Tubes (Constant Radius, Constricted And Flexible), Mark S. Schwitzerlett

Theses and Dissertations

Viscous liquid film flows in a tube arise in numerous industrial and biological applications, including the transport of mucus in human airways. Previous modeling studies have typically used no-slip boundary conditions, but in some applications the effects of slip at the boundary may not be negligible. We derive a long-wave model based on lubrication theory which allows for slippage along the boundary. Linear stability analysis verifies the impact of slip-length on the speed, growth rate, and wavelength of the most unstable mode. Nonlinear simulations demonstrate the impact of slip-length on plug formation and wave dynamics. These simulations are conducted for …

Rainbow Turan Methods For Trees, Victoria Bednar Jan 2023

Rainbow Turan Methods For Trees, Victoria Bednar

Theses and Dissertations

The rainbow Turan number, a natural extension of the well-studied traditional
Turan number, was introduced in 2007 by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraete. The rainbow Tur ́an number of a graph F , ex*(n, F ), is the largest number of edges for an n vertex graph G that can be properly edge colored with no rainbow F subgraph. Chapter 1 of this dissertation gives relevant definitions and a brief history of extremal graph theory. Chapter 2 defines k-unique colorings and the related k-unique Turan number and provides preliminary results on this new variant. In Chapter 3, we explore the …

Essays On Conditional Heteroscedastic Time Series Models With Asymmetry, Long Memory, And Structural Changes, K C M R Anjana Bandara Yatawara Jan 2023

Essays On Conditional Heteroscedastic Time Series Models With Asymmetry, Long Memory, And Structural Changes, K C M R Anjana Bandara Yatawara

Doctoral Dissertations

"The volatility of asset returns is usually time-varying, necessitating the introduction of models with a conditional heteroskedastic variance structure. In this dissertation, several existing formulations, motivated by the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedastic (GARCH) type models, are further generalized to accommodate more dynamic features of asset returns such as asymmetry, long memory, and structural breaks. First, we introduce a hybrid structure that combines short-memory asymmetric Glosten, Jagannathan, and Runkle (GJR) formulation and the long-memory fractionally integrated GARCH (FIGARCH) process for modeling financial volatility. This formulation not only can model volatility clusters and capture asymmetry but also considers the characteristic of long …

Explorations Of A Topology Constructed On The Maximal Ideals Of A Boolean Algebra, Abbigal Moos Jan 2023

Explorations Of A Topology Constructed On The Maximal Ideals Of A Boolean Algebra, Abbigal Moos

Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this thesis is to construct a topology on the collection of maximal ideals of a distributive and complemented lattice using the hull-kernel methodology. Through the construction of this topological space, we discovered that the space is compact, zero-dimensional, and Hausdorff. Next, we looked at the properties of some lattices, namely the power set of a finite set ordered by inclusion and the set of all positives divisors for some arbitrary integer ordered by divisibility. Whenever these lattices were both distributive and complemented, we constructed a topology on the collection of maximal ideals of the lattices using …

Investigations In The Semi-Strong Product Of Graphs And Bootstrap Percolation, Kevin J. Mccall Jan 2023

Investigations In The Semi-Strong Product Of Graphs And Bootstrap Percolation, Kevin J. Mccall

Theses and Dissertations

The semi-strong product of graphs G and H is a way of forming a new graph from the graphs G and H. The vertex set of the semi-strong product is the Cartesian product of the vertex sets of G and H, V(G) x V(H). The edges of the semi-strong product are determined as follows: (g1,h1)(g2,h2) is an edge of the product whenever g1g2 is an edge of G and h1h2 is an edge of H or g1 = g2 and h1h2 …

Machine-Assisted Discovery Of Integrable Symplectic Mappings, T. Zolkin, Y. Kharkov, S. Nagaitsev Jan 2023

Machine-Assisted Discovery Of Integrable Symplectic Mappings, T. Zolkin, Y. Kharkov, S. Nagaitsev

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a new automated method for finding integrable symplectic maps of the plane. These dynamical systems possess a hidden symmetry associated with an existence of conserved quantities, i.e., integrals of motion. The core idea of the algorithm is based on the knowledge that the evolution of an integrable system in the phase space is restricted to a lower-dimensional submanifold. Limiting ourselves to polygon invariants of motion, we analyze the shape of individual trajectories thus successfully distinguishing integrable motion from chaotic cases. For example, our method rediscovers some of the famous McMillan-Suris integrable mappings and ultradiscrete Painlevé equations. In total, …

On The Relation Between Oscillation Of Solutions Of Differential Equations And Corresponding Equations On Time Scales, Olexandr Stanzhytskyi, Roza Uteshova, Victoriia Tsan, Zoia Khaletska Jan 2023

On The Relation Between Oscillation Of Solutions Of Differential Equations And Corresponding Equations On Time Scales, Olexandr Stanzhytskyi, Roza Uteshova, Victoriia Tsan, Zoia Khaletska

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

This paper studies oscillatory properties of solutions of a dynamic equation on the set of time scales $\mathbf{T}_\lambda$ provided that the graininess function $\mu_\lambda$ approaches zero as $\lambda\to 0$. We derived the conditions under which oscillation of solutions of differential equations implies that of solutions of the corresponding equations defined on time scales with the same initial data, and vice versa.

Notes On Totally Geodesic Foliations Of A Complete Semi-Riemannian Manifold, An Sook Shin, Hyelim Han, Hobum Kim

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we prove that the orthogonal complement $\mathcal{F}^{\perp}$ of a totally geodesic foliation $\mathcal{F}$ on a complete semi-Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ satisfying a certain inequality between mixed sectional curvatures and the integrability tensor of $\mathcal{F}^{\perp}$ is totally geodesic. We also obtain conditions for the existence of totally geodesic foliations on a complete semi-Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with bundle-like metric $g$.

Some Remarks On Parameterized Inequalities Involving Conformable Fractional Operators, Ci̇han Ünal, Fati̇h Hezenci̇, Hüseyi̇n Budak

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we prove an identity for differentiable convex functions related to conformable fractional integrals. Moreover, some parameterized inequalities are established by using conformable fractional integrals. To be more precise, parameterized inequalities are obtained by taking advantage of the convexity, the Hölder inequality, and the power mean inequality. Furthermore, previous and new results are presented by using special cases of the obtained theorems.

The Normalized Miller-Ross Function And Its Geometric Properties, Khaled Mehrez Jan 2023

The Normalized Miller-Ross Function And Its Geometric Properties, Khaled Mehrez

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The main objective of this paper is to study certain geometric properties (like univalence, starlikeness, convexity, close-to-convexity) for the normalized Miller-Ross function. The various results, which we have established in the present investigation, are believed to be new, and their importance is illustrated by several interesting consequences and examples. Furthermore, some of the main results improve the corresponding results available in the literature [15].

A Calculus For Intuitionistic Fuzzy Values, Enes Yavuz Jan 2023

A Calculus For Intuitionistic Fuzzy Values, Enes Yavuz

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We introduce $^\oplus$calculus and $^\otimes$calculus for intuitionistic fuzzy values and prove some basic theorems by using multiplicative calculus which has useful tools to represent the concepts of introduced calculi. Besides, we construct some isomorphic mappings to interpret the relationships between $^\oplus$calculus and $^\otimes$calculus. This paper reveals also new calculi for fuzzy sets in particular.

Atomic Systems In Krein Spaces, Osmin Ferrer Villar, Edilberto Arroyo Ortiz, José Naranjo Martínez

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In the present article, we establish a definition of atomic systems in the Krein spaces, specifically, we establish the fundamental tools of the theory of atomic systems in the formalism of the Krein spaces and give a complete characterization of them. We also show that the atomic systems do not depend on the decomposition of the Krein space.

The Set Of Arf Numerical Semigroups With Given Frobenius Number, María Ángeles Moreno-Frías, Jose Carlos Rosales Jan 2023

The Set Of Arf Numerical Semigroups With Given Frobenius Number, María Ángeles Moreno-Frías, Jose Carlos Rosales

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A covariety is a nonempty family $C$ of numerical semigroups that satisfies a certain conditions. In this work we will show that if $F$ is a positive integer, then the set of Arf numerical semigroup with Frobenius number $F$, denoted by $(F)$, is a covatiety. The previous results will be used to give an algorithm which calculates the set $(F).$ Also we will see that if $X\subseteq S\backslash \Delta(F)$ for some $S\in (F),$ then there is the smallest element of $(F)$ containing $X.$

A Note On Half Of Some Med Semigroups Of Maximal Or Almost Maximal Length, Ahmet Çeli̇k Jan 2023

A Note On Half Of Some Med Semigroups Of Maximal Or Almost Maximal Length, Ahmet Çeli̇k

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, we have shown that numerical semigroups $M=<3,C+1,C+2>$ and $M=<3,C,C+2>$ have maximal or almost maximal length, with conductor $C$, where $C\equiv0(3)$ and $C\equiv2(3),$ respectively. We also examined whether half of these numerical semigroups were of maximal or almost maximal length.

To combat perceived issues in student engagement, we piloted using group projects in place of exams at the natural content break points in Calculus 2.

Which Hessenberg Varieties Are Gkm?, Rebecca Golding, Julianna Tymoczko Jan 2023

Which Hessenberg Varieties Are Gkm?, Rebecca Golding, Julianna Tymoczko

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

Hessenberg varieties H(X, H) form a class of subvarieties of the flag variety G/B, parameterized by an operator X and certain subspaces H of the Lie algebra of G. We identify several families of Hessenberg varieties in type An−1 that are T -stable subvarieties of G/B, as well as families that are invariant under a subtorus K of T . In particular, these varieties are candidates for the use of equivariant methods to study their geometry. Indeed, we are able to show that some of these varieties are unions of Schubert varieties, while others cannot be such unions. Among the …

Linking In Cyclic Branched Covers And Satellite (Non)-Homomorphisms, Patricia Cahn, Alexandra Kjuchukova

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

Let K⊂S3 be a knot and η,γ⊂S3∖K be simple closed curves. Denote by Σq(K) the q-fold cyclic branched cover of K. We give an explicit formula for computing the linking numbers between lifts of η and γ to Σq(K). As an application, we evaluate, in a variety of cases, an obstruction to satellite operations inducing homomorphisms on smooth concordance.

The Relationships Between Flow, Mathematics Self-Efficacy, And Mathematics Anxiety Among International Undergraduate Students In The United States, Samah Abduljabbar Jan 2023

The Relationships Between Flow, Mathematics Self-Efficacy, And Mathematics Anxiety Among International Undergraduate Students In The United States, Samah Abduljabbar

Dissertations

Problem

A worldwide problem, math anxiety is defined as an anxious state with an unpleasant feeling of tension characterized by fear of failing to achieve mathematics targets. Psychologically, math anxiety involves anxiety, tension, discomfort, nervousness, fear, shock, and insecurity. Math anxiety has been perceived as a key influencer of reduced math achievement, and avoidance of math-related careers. On the other hand, abilities, flow, interests, and psychological conditions contribute to student mathematics success. Belief in one's ability to perform a specific task boosts self-efficacy, which has been studied widely as a predictor of student academic performance. When students are interested in, …

Mathematical Analysis Of Convolutional Neural Networks, Daniel Mccarter Jan 2023

Mathematical Analysis Of Convolutional Neural Networks, Daniel Mccarter

Dissertations and Theses

In this thesis, the main topic is convolution as a mathematical operation and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN’s). While convolution is classically defined as a function, it can also be defined as an operator from Lp(R) to itself for 1 ≤ p ≤ 2 where Tw(f ) = f ∗ w given some w ∈ L1(R). CNN’s use convolution in its convolutional layers. Defining a neural network to be the composition of layer maps, we find that the neural network is, by necessity, Lipschitz. While CNN’s can be very powerful for image classification, slight changes to an image can completely fool …
