A Two-Dimensional Finite Element Model Of The Grain Boundary Based On Thermo-Mechanical Strain Gradient Plasticity, Yooseob Song, George Z. Voyiadjis Jan 2018

A Two-Dimensional Finite Element Model Of The Grain Boundary Based On Thermo-Mechanical Strain Gradient Plasticity, Yooseob Song, George Z. Voyiadjis

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

In this work, a two-dimensional finite element model for the grain boundary flow rule is developed based on the thermo-mechanical gradient-enhanced plasticity theory. The proposed model is temperature-dependent. A special attention is given to physical and micromechanical nature of dislocation interactions in combination with thermal activation on stored and dissipated energy. Thermodynamic conjugate microforces are decomposed into energetic and dissipative components. Correspondingly, two different grain boundary material length scales are present in the proposed model. Finally, numerical examples are solved in order to explore characteristics of the proposed grain boundary flow rule.

The Beauty Of Numbers In Nature: Mathematical Patterns And Principles From The Natural World [Book Review], John A. Adam Jan 2018

The Beauty Of Numbers In Nature: Mathematical Patterns And Principles From The Natural World [Book Review], John A. Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) It came as quite a shock at the time. I cannot recall exactly when it happened, but it certainly caught me by surprise. For most of my life, and certainly from elementary school (or “primary” school in the UK) through high school I had become used to seeing posters and books illustrating the “standard” map of the world: the Mercator projection. Of course, Greenwich, London, sat at longitude 0◦ (and still does!). And certainly I knew that planet Earth is spheroidal and that this flat projection distorted the shapes and areas (especially near the polar regions), but somehow …

Boundary Sentinels For The Resolution Of A Geometrical Problem, Saida Sandel, Abdelhamid Ayadi Jan 2018

Boundary Sentinels For The Resolution Of A Geometrical Problem, Saida Sandel, Abdelhamid Ayadi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The aim of this paper is to estimate the shape of an unknown part of the boundary of a geometrical domain. The identification technique used to estimate this part is the observation of the solution of a diffusion problem on the known part of this boundary. This technique is based on the sentinels theory.

Quantitative Voronovskaya- And Grüss-Voronovskaya-Type Theorems By The Blending Variant Of Szã¡Sz Operators Including Brenke-Type Polynomials, Purshottam Narain Agrawal, Behar Baxhaku, Ruchi Chauhan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The present paper aims to investigate a class of linear positive operators by combining Szász-Jain operators and Brenke polynomials and studies their approximation properties. We also prove quantitative Voronovskaya-type results and establish Grüss-Voronovskaja-type theorem. Furthermore, we show the rate of convergence for Szász-Jain-Brenke operators to functions having derivative of bounded variation and not having derivative of bounded variation by illustrative graphics using MATLAB.

On $N$-Absorbing $\Delta$-Primary Ideals, Gülşen Ulucak, Ünsal Teki̇r, Suat Koç Jan 2018

On $N$-Absorbing $\Delta$-Primary Ideals, Gülşen Ulucak, Ünsal Teki̇r, Suat Koç

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let $R$ be a commutative ring with nonzero identity and $n$ be a positive integer. In this paper, we study the concepts of $n$-absorbing $\delta $-primary ideals and weakly $n$-absorbing $\delta$-primary ideals, which are the generalizations of $\delta$-primary ideals and weakly $\delta$-primary ideals, respectively. We introduce the concepts of $n$-absorbing $\delta$-primary ideals and weakly $n$-absorbing $\delta$-primary ideals. Moreover, we give many properties of these new types of ideals and investigate the relations between these structures.

Pythagorean Triples Containing Generalized Lucas Numbers, Zafer Şi̇ar, Refi̇k Keski̇n Jan 2018

Pythagorean Triples Containing Generalized Lucas Numbers, Zafer Şi̇ar, Refi̇k Keski̇n

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let $P$ and $Q$ be nonzero integers. Generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences are defined as follows: $U_{0}(P,Q)=0,U_{1}(P,Q)=1,$ and $ U_{n+1}(P,Q)=PU_{n}(P,Q)+QU_{n-1}(P,Q)$ for $n\geq 1$ and $ V_{0}(P,Q)=2,V_{1}(P,Q)=P,$ and $V_{n+1}(P,Q)=PV_{n}(P,Q)+QV_{n-1}(P,Q)$ for $n\geq 1,$ respectively. In this paper, we assume that $P$ and $Q$ are relatively prime odd positive integers and $P^{2}+4Q>0.$ We determine all indices $n$ such that $U_{n}=(P^{2}+4Q)x^{2}.$ Moreover, we determine all indices $n$ such that $(P^{2}+4Q)U_{n}=x^{2}.$ As a result, we show that the equation $V_{n}^{2}(P,1)+V_{n+1}^{2}(P,1)=x^{2}$ has solution only for $n=2,$ $P=1,$ $x=5$ and $V_{n+1}^{2}(P,-1)=V_{n}^{2}(P,-1)+x^{2}$ has no solutions. Moreover, we solve some Diophantine equations.

Sandwich Theorems For A Class Of $P$-Valent Meromorphic Functionsinvolving The Erdélyi-Kober-Type Integral Operators, Hari Srivastava, Rabha Elashwah, W Kota

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, the authors study some subordination and superordination properties for classes of $p$-valent meromorphic, analytic, and univalent functions associated with a linear operator $\mathfrak{L}_{p,\lambda}^{m,\ell}(a,c,\mu)$ of the Erdélyi-Kober type. Connections with several earlier results are also pointed out.

A New Proof Of A Harnack Inequality For The Curve Shortening Flow, Mihai Bailesteanu Jan 2018

A New Proof Of A Harnack Inequality For The Curve Shortening Flow, Mihai Bailesteanu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We offer a new approach for determining Harnack quantities for the curve shortening flow and we show how, following this procedure, one can obtain Hamilton's Harnack inequality for this flow $\kappa_t+\frac{1}{2t}\kappa\geq\frac{\kappa_s^2}{\kappa}$, where $\kappa$ is the curvature of the curve being deformed by the flow.

Convergence And Gundy's Decomposition For Noncommutative Quasi-Martingales, Congbian Ma, Ping Li, Youliang Hou

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we prove the bilaterally almost uniformly convergence of bounded $L_1(\mathcal{M})$-noncommutative quasi-martingales. We also prove Gundy's decomposition for noncommutative quasi-martingales. As an application, we prove that every relatively weakly compact quasi-martingale difference sequence in $L_1(\mathcal{M},\tau)$ whose sequence of norms is bounded away from zero is 2-co-lacunary.

Geometric Properties Of Rotation Minimizing Vector Fields Along Curves In Riemannian Manifolds, Fernando Etayo Jan 2018

Geometric Properties Of Rotation Minimizing Vector Fields Along Curves In Riemannian Manifolds, Fernando Etayo

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Rotation minimizing (RM) vector fields and frames were introduced by Bishop as an alternative to the Frenet frame. They are used in CAGD because they can be defined even when the curvature vanishes. Nevertheless, many other geometric properties have not been studied. In the present paper, RM vector fields along a curve immersed into a Riemannian manifold are studied when the ambient manifold is the Euclidean 3-space, the hyperbolic 3-space, and a Kähler manifold.

On The $J$-Reflexive Operators, Parviz Sadat Hosseini, Bahmann Yousefi Jan 2018

On The $J$-Reflexive Operators, Parviz Sadat Hosseini, Bahmann Yousefi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A bounded linear operator $T$ on a Banach space $X$ is $J$-reflexive if every bounded operator on $X$ that leaves invariant the sets $J(T,x)$ for all $x$ is contained in the closure of $orb(T)$ in the strong operator topology. We discuss some properties of $J$-reflexive operators. We also give and prove some necessary and sufficient conditions under which an operator is $J$-reflexive. We show that isomorphisms preserve $J$-reflexivity and some examples are considered. Finally, we extend the $J$-reflexive property in terms of subsets.

Prime-Valent Arc-Transitivebasic Graphs With Order $4p$ Or $4p^2$, Hailin Liu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

A graph $\Ga$ is called $G$-basic if $G$ is quasiprimitive or bi-quasiprimitive on the vertex set of $\Ga$, where $G\leq\Aut\Ga$. In this paper, we complete the classification of $r$-valent arc-transitive basic graphs with order $4p$ or $4p^2$, where $p$ and $r$ are odd primes.

A Further Extension Of The Extended Riemann-Liouville Fractional Derivative Operator, Martin Bohner, Gauhar Rahman, Shahid Mubeen, Kottakkaran Nisar

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The main objective of this paper is to establish the extension of an extended fractional derivative operator by using an extended beta function recently defined by Parmar et al. by considering the Bessel functions in its kernel. We also give some results related to the newly defined fractional operator, such as Mellin transform and relations to extended hypergeometric and Appell's function via generating functions.

A Combinatorial Miscellany: Antipodes, Parking Cars, And Descent Set Powers, Alexander Thomas Happ Jan 2018

A Combinatorial Miscellany: Antipodes, Parking Cars, And Descent Set Powers, Alexander Thomas Happ

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

In this dissertation we first introduce an extension of the notion of parking functions to cars of different sizes. We prove a product formula for the number of such sequences and provide a refinement using a multi-parameter extension of the Abel--Rothe polynomial. Next, we study the incidence Hopf algebra on the noncrossing partition lattice. We demonstrate a bijection between the terms in the canceled chain decomposition of its antipode and noncrossing hypertrees. Thirdly, we analyze the sum of the 𝑟th powers of the descent set statistic on permutations and how many small prime factors occur in these numbers. These results …

Model Function Of Women’S 1500m World Record Improvement Over Time, Annie Allmark Jan 2018

Model Function Of Women’S 1500m World Record Improvement Over Time, Annie Allmark

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

We give an example of simple modeling of the known sport results that can be used for athletes’ self-improvement and estimation of future achievements.

This project compares the women’s 1500-meter world record times to the time elapsed between when they were run. The function of time which describes this comparison is found through graphing the data and interpreting the graphs. Then the obtained model function is compared to the real time data. The conclusions drawn from the result include that the calculated function of time lacks in accuracy as time elapsed increases, but the model could be used to estimate …

Polycrystalline Silicon Solar Module Power Max, Jaynil Patel Jan 2018

Polycrystalline Silicon Solar Module Power Max, Jaynil Patel

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

In recent years solar energy has started to make its impact in the sunshine state. The solar panels are made up of photovoltaic cells, which convert the sun’s rays into electricity. One of the ways to improve solar panel efficiency is to increase the power output of a solar collector. The maximum power is calculated by determining the maximum power for voltage and the current. This is done by adding the maximum values for the equation for power and then using differentiation. After the maximum values are found for each hour of the day from sunset to noon, each individual …

Tsunami Waves, Samantha Pennino Jan 2018

Tsunami Waves, Samantha Pennino

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Predicting the travel time of tsunami waves is imperative to the safety and well-being of possibly affected communities since tsunami waves can happen incredibly fast. So, knowing how long an area is until a tsunami approaches dramatically helps with mitigation strategies. As an example we calculate the travel time of a tsunami wave to Somalia and Sri-Lanka that flowed an earthquake in 2004 in the Indian ocean off the coast of Sumatra. This is done by using the velocity from the shallow wave equation of the waves and piecewise integration.

Trend Analysis And Completion Prediction Of The Section Project, Ronald Jones Jan 2018

Trend Analysis And Completion Prediction Of The Section Project, Ronald Jones

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Creating an accurate prediction of the completion timeline of a software development project is complicated and error prone. Developers will gain a natural intuition as to how long a task should take then. However, this prediction can end up being wrong in many cases due to many factors. This paper will attempt to determine a formula which allows a more accurate prediction to be created.

Minimizing Container Weight, Ibrahim Alomran Jan 2018

Minimizing Container Weight, Ibrahim Alomran

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Increased globalization has resulted in increased competition in the shipping industry. Since large carriers control over 70% of the total shipping industry, small carriers are left with only 30% of the market share to compete for. Ultimately, profit margins for small carriers have become very minimal. There is, therefore, need to develop a strategy that will aid in optimizing the profits of carriers. The goal of this paper is to develop a model that will help determine the minimum weight for a particular container design. The validity of the model is important in the sense that minimum container weight will …

Elapsed Time Of Vehicle Acceleration, Jensen Mctighe Jan 2018

Elapsed Time Of Vehicle Acceleration, Jensen Mctighe

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Newton’s Second Law states that force is equal to the mass of an object multiplied by its acceleration. More specifically, force is the mass times the instantaneous change in velocity over time of an object. By rearranging this equation, it can be determined that the time elapsed of the acceleration of an object is equal to the integral of the inverse value of the force relative to change in velocity (dv). In the context of real world application, this method can be used to calculate the time taken for a vehicle to accelerate from its minimum to maximum speed, given …

Design Of Nozzle For High-Powered Solid Rocket Propellant, Jackson Stephenson

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

This paper presents a preliminary nozzle design for a high-altitude rocket to be built by SOAR, the Society of Aeronautics and Rocketry. The equations and methods used for analysis came from professional sources via text or informational videos. The equations in focus will look at the temperature/pressure/area-Mach relationships for isentropic flow, pressure expansions in selected materials, and finding other characteristic properties using safe chemical property assumptions using CEARUN. The equations were used under the assumption of an isentropic flow under sea level conditions. If the design and the projected results look promising, they will be implemented soon for machining and …

Organic Agricultural Analysis: Efficiency Of Common Practices, Bradley Biega Jan 2018

Organic Agricultural Analysis: Efficiency Of Common Practices, Bradley Biega

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

To analyze the efficiency of common watering practices in an organic agriculture setting we use Sweetwater Organic Farm’s conventional methods for irrigation and land allotment as well as some algebra and calculus technique. Sweetwater’s operation is limited to their largest growing field. A mathematical model is built to determine the current efficiency of the rotary head sprinkler system. Then the efficiency of this system is compared to a new drip line system. Several variables like soil porosity, absorption rates, and areas where no plants are located, are taken into consideration. Our results show that the current irrigation in place wastes …

Comparing Two Flywheel-Piston Linkages, Anthony Sanchez Jan 2018

Comparing Two Flywheel-Piston Linkages, Anthony Sanchez

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

The main idea of this paper is to compare two different ways of linking a flywheel to a piston: the Scotch Yoke linkage and the Eccentric linkage. The Scotch Yoke linkage is a way to convert the linear motion of a piston into rotational motion by using a flywheel, or vice versa. The Eccentric mechanism, on the other hand, consists of a circular wheel that is fixed to a rotating axle that makes it rotate. We compare two methods by expressing both motions as functions of three variables (R, L and θ) and use these functions to …

Invariant Subspaces Of Operators Quasi-Similar To L-Weakly And M-Weaklycompact Operators, Erdal Bayram Jan 2018

Invariant Subspaces Of Operators Quasi-Similar To L-Weakly And M-Weaklycompact Operators, Erdal Bayram

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let T be an L-weakly compact operator defined on a Banach lattice E without order continuous norm. We prove that the bounded operator S defined on a Banach space X has a nontrivial closed invariant subspace if there exists an operator in the commutant of S that is quasi-similar to T. Additively, some similar and relevant results are extended to a larger classes of operators called super right-commutant. We also show that quasi-similarity need not preserve L-weakly or M-weakly compactness.
