Lozenge Tilings Of A Halved Hexagon With An Array Of Triangles Removed From The Boundary, Tri Lai Mar 2018

Lozenge Tilings Of A Halved Hexagon With An Array Of Triangles Removed From The Boundary, Tri Lai

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Proctor's work on staircase plane partitions yields an enumeration of lozenge tilings of a halved hexagon on the triangular lattice. Rohatgi recently extended this tiling enumeration to a halved hexagon with a triangle removed from the boundary. In this paper, we prove a generalization of the results of Proctor and Rohatgi by enumerating lozenge tilings of a halved hexagon in which an array of an arbitrary number of adjacent triangles has been removed from the boundary.

A Review On Entanglement And Maxwell-Dirac Isomorphism, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In RG forum, one senior professor of physics posted a project called: “Future science and technology.” As a response, one of us (VC) wrote in reply: “I think one of future science's tasks is to discover the link between entanglement and classical electromagnetic theory. This is to fulfill Einstein's position that present QM theory is incomplete, a new one must be found. We are on a way to that goal.” Therefore, in this paper we will discuss how entanglement can be explained in terms of Maxwell-Dirac isomorphism. This short review may be considered as Einstein’s dream of completing QM in …

Using An A Priori Estimate For Constructing Difference Schemes For Quasi-Linear Hyperbolic Systems, Rakhmatillo Aloev, Mirzoali Khudayberganov

Bulletin of National University of Uzbekistan: Mathematics and Natural Sciences

In this paper we consider a class of quasi-linear hyperbolic systems, which allows the construction of a dissipative energy integrals. In the basis of the design and investigation the stability of difference schemes for the numerical solution of the initial boundary value problems for the above class of quasi-linear hyperbolic systems, we put the existence of a discrete analogue of the dissipative energy integrals.

Radial Basis Function Generated Finite Differences For The Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation, Justin Ng Mar 2018

Radial Basis Function Generated Finite Differences For The Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation, Justin Ng

Theses and Dissertations

Solutions to the one-dimensional and two-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation are obtained numerically using methods based on radial basis functions (RBFs). Periodic boundary conditions are enforced with a non-periodic initial condition over varying domain sizes. The spatial structure of the solutions is represented using RBFs while several explicit and implicit iterative methods for solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are used in temporal discretization for the approximate solutions to the NLS equation. Splitting schemes, integration factors and hyperviscosity are used to stabilize the time-stepping schemes and are compared with one another in terms of computational efficiency and accuracy. This thesis shows …

Shortest Path Across Stochastic Network With Correlated Random Arcs, Stephanie M. Boone Mar 2018

Shortest Path Across Stochastic Network With Correlated Random Arcs, Stephanie M. Boone

Theses and Dissertations

This paper introduces a new approach to identify the shortest path across a stochastic network with correlated random arcs utilizing nonparametric samples of arc lengths. This approach is applied to find optimal aircraft routes that minimize expected fuel consumption for a given airspeed utilizing predicted wind output from NWP ensemble models. Results from this new methodology are then compared to the current fuel minimization route planning method that utilizes deterministic NWP wind data for arc lengths. Comparisons are also made to other previously proposed alternative fuel minimization methodologies that utilize mean and median wind data calculated from NWP ensemble wind …

Text Classification Of Installation Support Contract Topic Models For Category Management, William C. Sevier Mar 2018

Text Classification Of Installation Support Contract Topic Models For Category Management, William C. Sevier

Theses and Dissertations

Air Force Installation Contracting Agency manages nearly 18 percent of total Air Force spend, equating to approximately 57 billion dollars. To improve strategic sourcing, the organization is beginning to categorize installation-support spend and assign accountable portfolio managers to respective spend categories. A critical task in this new strategic environment includes the appropriate categorization of Air Force contracts into newly created, manageable spend categories. It has been recognized that current composite categories have the opportunity to be further distinguished into sub-categories leveraging text analytics on the contract descriptions. Furthermore, upon establishing newly constructed categories, future contracts must be classified into these …

Branching Matrices For The Automorphism Group Lattice Of A Riemann Surface, Sean A. Broughton Mar 2018

Branching Matrices For The Automorphism Group Lattice Of A Riemann Surface, Sean A. Broughton

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Let S be a Riemann surface and G a large subgroup of Aut(S) (Aut(S) may be unknown). We are particularly interested in regular n-gonal surfaces, i.e., the quotient surface S/G (and hence S/Aut(S)) has genus zero. For various H the ramification information of the branched coverings S/K -> S/H may be captured in a matrix. The ramification information, in particular strong branching, may be then be used in analyzing the structure of Aut(S). The ramification information is conjugation invariant so the matrix's rows and columns may be indexed by conjugacy classes of subgroups. The only required …

Modeling Of First-Order Photobleaching Kinetics Using Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods, Somayyeh Sheikholeslami, James V. Lambers Mar 2018

Modeling Of First-Order Photobleaching Kinetics Using Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods, Somayyeh Sheikholeslami, James V. Lambers

Faculty Publications

We solve the first order 2-D reaction–diffusion equations which describe binding-diffusion kinetics using the photobleaching scanning profile of a confocal laser scanning microscope, approximated by a Gaussian laser profile. We show how to solve the first-order photobleaching kinetics partial differential equations (PDEs) using a time-stepping method known as a Krylov subspace spectral (KSS) method. KSS methods are explicit methods for solving time-dependent variable-coefficient partial differential equations. They approximate Fourier coefficients of the solution using Gaussian quadrature rules in the spectral domain. In this paper, we show how a KSS method can be used to obtain not only an approximate numerical …

A Weak Galerkin Method For Second Order Elliptic Equations With Polynomial Reductions, Nolisa Malluwawadu Mar 2018

A Weak Galerkin Method For Second Order Elliptic Equations With Polynomial Reductions, Nolisa Malluwawadu

Theses and Dissertations

The second order elliptic equation, which is also known as the diffusion-convection equation, is of great interest in many branches of physics and industry. In this dissertation, we use the weak Galerkin finite element method to study the general elliptic equation with Dirichlet boundary condition and the elliptic equation with mixed boundary conditions. Weak Galerkin finite element schemes are proposed and analyzed. These schemes feature piecewise polynomials of degree k ≥ 1 on each element and piecewise polynomials of degree k − 1 ≥ 0 on each edge or face of the element. Error estimates of optimal order are established …

Review Of G. Israel, Meccanicismo. Trionfi E Miserie Della Visione Meccanica Del Mondo, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

"This is Giorgio's Israel last book, which appeared only a few weeks after his untimely death, in September 2015. For many reasons, it can be considered as his intellectual legacy, since it comes back, in a new and organic way, to many of the research topics to which he devoted his life and his many publications, which include several papers in Historia Mathematica. One of these papers, co-authored with M. Menghini, appeared in vol. 25/4, 1998 and was devoted to Poincaré's and Enriques's opposite views on qualitative analysis, which is a theme also dealt with in this book (pp. 117–122)."

F-Singularities Under Generic Linkage, Linquan Ma, Janet Page, Rebecca R.G., William Taylor, Wenliang Zhang

Mathematical Sciences Faculty Research

Let R=k[x1,…,xn] be a polynomial ring over a prefect field of positive characteristic. Let I be an equi-dimensional ideal in R and let J be a generic link of I in S=R[uij]c×r. We describe the parameter test submodule of S/J in terms of the test ideal of the pair (R,I) when a reduction of I is a complete intersection or almost complete intersection. As an application, we deduce a criterion for when S/J has F-rational singularities in these cases. We also compare the F-pure threshold of (R,I) and (S,J).

Investigating Secondary Students Beliefs About Mathematical Problem-Solving, Mark Prendergast, Cormac Breen, Aibhin Bray, Fiona Faulkner, Brian Carroll, Dominic Quinn

Articles

Many studies over the past thirty years have highlighted the important role of students’ beliefs for successful problem solving in mathematics. Given the recent emphasis afforded to problem solving on the reformed Irish secondary school mathematics curriculum, the main aim of this study was to identify Irish students’ (n = 975) beliefs about the field. A quantitative measure of these beliefs was attained through the use of the Indiana Mathematical Belief Scale, an existing thirty item (five scale) self-report questionnaire. A statistical analysis of the data revealed that students who were further through their secondary education had a stronger belief …

Policy-Preferred Paths In As-Level Internet Topology Graphs, Mehmet Engin Tozal Mar 2018

Policy-Preferred Paths In As-Level Internet Topology Graphs, Mehmet Engin Tozal

Theory & Applications of Graphs

Using Autonomous System (AS) level Internet topology maps to determine accurate AS-level paths is essential for network diagnostics, performance optimization, security enforcement, business policy management and topology-aware application development. One significant drawback that we have observed in many studies is simplifying the AS-level topology map of the Internet to an undirected graph, and then using the hop distance as a means to find the shortest paths between the ASes. A less significant drawback is restricting the shortest paths to only valley-free paths. Both approaches usually inflate the number of paths between ASes; introduce erroneous paths that do not conform to …

A Comparison Of Machine Learning Techniques For Taxonomic Classification Of Teeth From The Family Bovidae, Gregory J. Matthews, Juliet K. Brophy, Maxwell Luetkemeier, Hongie Gu, George K. Thiruvathukal

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This study explores the performance of machine learning algorithms on the classification of fossil teeth in the Family Bovidae. Isolated bovid teeth are typically the most common fossils found in southern Africa and they often constitute the basis for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Taxonomic identification of fossil bovid teeth, however, is often imprecise and subjective. Using modern teeth with known taxons, machine learning algorithms can be trained to classify fossils. Previous work by Brophy et al. [Quantitative morphological analysis of bovid teeth and implications for paleoenvironmental reconstruction of plovers lake, Gauteng Province, South Africa, J. Archaeol. A New Method For Multi-Bit And Qudit Transfer Based On Commensurate Waveguide Arrays, Jovan Petrovic, J. J. P. Veerman Mar 2018

A New Method For Multi-Bit And Qudit Transfer Based On Commensurate Waveguide Arrays, Jovan Petrovic, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The faithful state transfer is an important requirement in the construction of classical and quantum computers. While the high-speed transfer is realized by optical-fibre interconnects, its implementation in integrated optical circuits is affected by cross-talk. The cross-talk between densely packed optical waveguides limits the transfer fidelity and distorts the signal in each channel, thus severely impeding the parallel transfer of states such as classical registers, multiple qubits and qudits. Here, we leverage on the suitably engineered cross-talk between waveguides to achieve the parallel transfer on optical chip. Waveguide coupling coefficients are designed to yield commensurate eigenvalues of the array and …

Development Of Structure Of Ceramic Brick With Regard To Environmental Factors, Z. K. Babayev, Z. B Djumaniyazov, Y. X. Yaqubov, E. X. Xudayberganov

Central Asian Problems of Modern Science and Education

Preliminary studies have established that the process of burning ceramic bricks containing coke-fines as burn-in additives proceeds much faster, with minimal energy expenditure than the traditional method. Also, under these conditions, it is established that the coke fines serve as a reducing agent and accompanies the decomposition of difficult to decompose salts (Na2SO4, CaSO4), which eliminates such negative phenomena as high education. The reducing medium also positively influences the reduction of iron oxides (Fe2+ to Fe+ ) contained in loess-like loam, the chemical ratio of which is Fe+ more active than Fe2+, which predetermines the acceleration of the formation of …
