Some Properties Of $E$-Symmetric Rings, F M, Junchao Wei Jan 2018

Some Properties Of $E$-Symmetric Rings, F M, Junchao Wei

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we first give some characterizations of $e$-symmetric rings. We prove that $R$ is an $e$-symmetric ring if and only if $a_{1}a_{2}a_{3}=0$ implies that $a_{\sigma(1)}a_{\sigma(2)}a_{\sigma(3)}e=0$, where $\sigma $ is any transformation of $\{1,2,3\}$. With the help of the Bott--Duffin inverse, we show that for $e\in ME_{l}(R)$, $R$ is an $e$-symmetric ring if and only if for any $a\in R$ and $g\in E(R)$, if $a$ has a Bott--Duffin $(e,g)$-inverse, then $g=eg$. Using the solution of the equation $axe=c$, we show that for $e\in ME_{l}(R)$, $R$ is an $e$-symmetric ring if and only if for any $a,c \in R$, if …

Conformal Riemannian Maps From Almost Hermitian Manifolds, Bayram Şahi̇n, Şener Yanan Jan 2018

Conformal Riemannian Maps From Almost Hermitian Manifolds, Bayram Şahi̇n, Şener Yanan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Conformal Riemannian maps from almost Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, namely conformal invariant Riemannian maps, holomorphic conformal Riemannian maps, and conformal antiinvariant Riemannian maps, are introduced. We mainly focus on conformal antiinvariant Riemannian maps from Kaehlerian manifolds. We give proper examples of conformal antiinvariant Riemannian maps, obtain the integrability of certain distributions, and investigate the geometry of leaves of these distributions. We also obtain various conditions for such maps to be horizontally homothetic maps.

An Exponential Method To Solve Linear Fredholm-Volterraintegro-Differential Equations And Residual Improvement, Şuayi̇p Yüzbaşi Jan 2018

An Exponential Method To Solve Linear Fredholm-Volterraintegro-Differential Equations And Residual Improvement, Şuayi̇p Yüzbaşi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, a collocation approach based on exponential polynomials is introduced to solve linear Fredholm-Volterra integro-differential equations under the initial boundary conditions. First, by constructing the matrix forms of the exponential polynomials and their derivatives, the desired exponential solution and its derivatives are written in matrix forms. Second, the differential and integral parts of the problem are converted into matrix forms based on exponential polynomials. Later, the main problem is reduced to a system of linear algebraic equations by aid of the collocation points, the matrix operations, and the matrix forms of the conditions. The solutions of this system …

Diagnostic Effects Of An Early Mastery Activity In College Algebra And Precalculus, Nathan Wakefield, Joe Champion, Jessalyn Bolkema, Douglas Dailey Jan 2018

Diagnostic Effects Of An Early Mastery Activity In College Algebra And Precalculus, Nathan Wakefield, Joe Champion, Jessalyn Bolkema, Douglas Dailey

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate implementation of an early intervention mastery activity during the first two weeks of college algebra and precalculus courses at a large U.S. public university. Statistical modeling of (N = 935) students’ performance in the courses, including a logistic regression model of pass/fail course achievement with students’ high school rank, ACT Mathematics scores, and performance on the intervention as explanatory variables, suggested significant independent differences in course performance across performance levels on the early mastery activity. An evaluation of diagnostic validity for the model yielded a 19% false negative rate (predicted to …

Statistical Algorithms And Bioinformatics Tools Development For Computational Analysis Of High-Throughput Transcriptomic Data, Adam Mcdermaid Jan 2018

Statistical Algorithms And Bioinformatics Tools Development For Computational Analysis Of High-Throughput Transcriptomic Data, Adam Mcdermaid

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Next-Generation Sequencing technologies allow for a substantial increase in the amount of data available for various biological studies. In order to effectively and efficiently analyze this data, computational approaches combining mathematics, statistics, computer science, and biology are implemented. Even with the substantial efforts devoted to development of these approaches, numerous issues and pitfalls remain. One of these issues is mapping uncertainty, in which read alignment results are biased due to the inherent difficulties associated with accurately aligning RNA-Sequencing reads. GeneQC is an alignment quality control tool that provides insight into the severity of mapping uncertainty in each annotated gene from …

Bases In Spaces Of Regular Multilinear Operators And Homogeneous Polynomials On Banach Lattices, Khazhak Varazdat Navoyan Jan 2018

Bases In Spaces Of Regular Multilinear Operators And Homogeneous Polynomials On Banach Lattices, Khazhak Varazdat Navoyan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For Banach lattices E1,…, Em and F with 1-unconditional bases, we show that the monomial sequence forms a 1-unconditional basis of Lr(E1,…, Em;F), the Banach lattice of all regular m-linear operators from E1×···× Em to F, if and only if each basis of E1,…,Em is shrinking and every positive m-linear operator from E 1×···×Em to F is weakly sequentially continuous. As a consequence, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for which the m-fold Fremlin projective tensor product E1⊗ |π|··· ⊗|π|E m (resp. the m-fold positive injective tensor product E1⊗|ϵ|··· ⊗ |ϵ|Em) has a shrinking basis or a boundedly complete basis. …

Graph Homomorphisms And Vector Colorings, Michael Robert Levet Jan 2018

Graph Homomorphisms And Vector Colorings, Michael Robert Levet

Theses and Dissertations

A graph vertex coloring is an assignment of labels, which are referred to as colors, such that no two adjacent vertices receive the same color. The vertex coloring problem is NP-Complete [8], and so no polynomial time algorithm is believed to exist. The notion of a graph vector coloring was introduced as an efficiently computable relaxation to the graph vertex coloring problem [7]. In [6], the authors examined the highly symmetric class of 1-walk regular graphs, characterizing when such graphs admit unique vector colorings. We present this characterization, as well as several important consequences discussed in [5, 6]. By appealing …

Non-Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Teachers' Efficacy For Integrating Mathematics Across The Curriculum, Sandra Charlene Burrell Jan 2018

Non-Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Teachers' Efficacy For Integrating Mathematics Across The Curriculum, Sandra Charlene Burrell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem at a local science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) charter high school in this study, was that non-STEM teachers lacked the self-efficacy and background knowledge to integrate mathematics into their content-specific instructional activities. The goal of this study was to explore non-STEM teachers' self-efficacy for integrating mathematics across the STEM charter high school's curriculum. The conceptual framework of self-efficacy informed the study. A case study research design was chosen to develop an in-depth understanding of the problem. . Twelve of the 16 local school's non-STEM teachers agreed to participate in the study. Personal interviews were conducted to access non-STEM …

A Probability Model For Strategic Bidding On The Price Is Right, Paul H. Kvam Jan 2018

A Probability Model For Strategic Bidding On The Price Is Right, Paul H. Kvam

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

The TV game show “The Price is Right” features a bidding auction called “Contestants’ Row” that rewards the player (out of 4) who bids closest to an item’s value, without overbidding. This paper considers ways in which players can maximize a winning probability based on the player's bidding order. We consider marginal strategies in which players assume opponents are bidding individually perceived values of the merchandise. Based on preceding bids of others, players have information available to create strategies. We consider conditional strategies in which players adjust bids knowing other players are using strategies. The last bidder has a large …

The Range And Valence Of A Real Smirnov Function, Timothy Ferguson, William T. Ross Jan 2018

The Range And Valence Of A Real Smirnov Function, Timothy Ferguson, William T. Ross

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We give a complete description of the possible ranges of real Smirnov functions (quotients of two bounded analytic functions on the open unit disk where the denominator is outer and such that the radial boundary values are real almost everywhere on the unit circle). Our techniques use the theory of unbounded symmetric Toeplitz operators, some general theory of unbounded symmetric operators, classical Hardy spaces, and an application of the uniformization theorem. In addition, we completely characterize the possible valences for these real Smirnov functions when the valence is finite. To do so we construct Riemann surfaces we call disk trees …

Optimal Weak Parallelogram Constants For L-P Spaces, Raymond Cheng, Javad Mashreghi, William T. Ross

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Inspired by Clarkson's inequalities for L-p and continuing work from [5], this paper computes the optimal constant C in the weak parallelogram laws parallel to f + g parallel to(r )+ C parallel to f - g parallel to(r )= 2(r-1 )(parallel to f parallel to(r) + parallel to g parallel to(r)) for the L-p spaces, 1 < p < infinity.

Decoding Book Barcode Images, Yizhou Tao Jan 2018

Decoding Book Barcode Images, Yizhou Tao

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis investigated a method of barcode reconstruction to address the recovery of a blurred and convoluted one-dimensional barcode. There are a lot of types of barcodes used today, such as Code 39, Code 93, Code 128, etc. Our algorithm applies to the universal barcode, EAN 13. We extend the methodologies proposed by Iwen et al. (2013) in the journal article "A Symbol-Based Algorithm for Decoding barcodes." The algorithm proposed in the paper requires a signal measured by a laser scanner as an input. The observed signal is modeled as a true signal corrupted by a Gaussian convolution, additional noises, …

The Boundedness Of The Hardy-Littlewood Maximal Function And The Strong Maximal Function On The Space Bmo, Wenhao Zhang Jan 2018

The Boundedness Of The Hardy-Littlewood Maximal Function And The Strong Maximal Function On The Space Bmo, Wenhao Zhang

CMC Senior Theses

In this thesis, we present the space BMO, the one-parameter Hardy-Littlewood maximal function, and the two-parameter strong maximal function. We use the John-Nirenberg inequality, the relation between Muckenhoupt weights and BMO, and the Coifman-Rochberg proposition on constructing A1 weights with the Hardy- Littlewood maximal function to show the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function on BMO. The analogous statement for the strong maximal function is not yet understood. We begin our exploration of this problem by discussing an equivalence between the boundedness of the strong maximal function on rectangular BMO and the fact that the strong maximal function maps …

On The Mixtures Of Weibull And Pareto (Iv) Distribution: An Alternative To Pareto Distribution, I. Ghosh, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Naveen K. Bansal, Mehdi Maadooliat

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Finite mixture models have provided a reasonable tool to model various types of observed phenomena, specially those which are random in nature. In this article, a finite mixture of Weibull and Pareto (IV) distribution is considered and studied. Some structural properties of the resulting model are discussed including estimation of the model parameters via expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. A real-life data application exhibits the fact that in certain situations, this mixture model might be a better alternative than the rival popular models.

On Characterizations Of Mcllog, Ellogw, Pthl And K-Ge Distributions, Gholamhossein G. Hamedani, Nadeem Shafique Butt

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Huang S. and Oluyede (2016), Oluyede et al. (2016), Krishnarani (2016) and Rather and Rather (2017) consider the "McDonald Log-Logistic", the "Exponentiated Log-Logistic Weibull", the "Power Transformation Half-Logistic" and "k-Generalized Exponential" distributions, respectively, and study certain properties and applications of these distributions. The present short note is intended to complete, in some way, the above mentioned works via establishing certain characterizations of these distributions in different directions.

A Bayesian Variable Selection Approach Yields Improved Detection Of Brain Activation From Complex-Valued Fmri, Cheng-Han Yu, Raquel Prado, Hernando Ombao, Daniel B. Rowe Jan 2018

A Bayesian Variable Selection Approach Yields Improved Detection Of Brain Activation From Complex-Valued Fmri, Cheng-Han Yu, Raquel Prado, Hernando Ombao, Daniel B. Rowe

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Voxel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time courses are complex-valued signals giving rise to magnitude and phase data. Nevertheless, most studies use only the magnitude signals and thus discard half of the data that could potentially contain important information. Methods that make use of complex-valued fMRI (CV-fMRI) data have been shown to lead to superior power in detecting active voxels when compared to magnitude-only methods, particularly for small signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). We present a new Bayesian variable selection approach for detecting brain activation at the voxel level from CV-fMRI data. We develop models with complex-valued spike-and-slab priors on the activation …

Investigating Problems With Mathematical Proof Skills, Samantha Collier Jan 2018

Investigating Problems With Mathematical Proof Skills, Samantha Collier

The University Honors Program

This research paper is focused on identifying and exploring problems that high school students have with the mathematical proof process. The study described in this report was designed to answer the question, do students who tend to struggle with mathematical proofs also struggle with understanding what is known and unknown in a proof, making assumptions about figures, and understanding mathematical converses? To answer these questions, students at three Dayton area high schools completed tasks relating to proofs and converse statements as well as a questionnaire. Contrary to the initial hypothesis, students who were perceived to have greater proof abilities did …

Statistics And Biomechanics: An Interdisciplinary Evaluation Of The Mathematical, Practical, And Athletic Applications Of Principal Component Analysis, Sydney Grace Davis Jan 2018

Statistics And Biomechanics: An Interdisciplinary Evaluation Of The Mathematical, Practical, And Athletic Applications Of Principal Component Analysis, Sydney Grace Davis

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Excerpt from Introduction

Coaches and athletes around the world are in constant pursuit of improving their athletic performance. For some, a routine amount of weight lifting, cardiovascular exercise, agilities and flexibility training with gradual advancement may be enough to see growth. However, many are not satisfied and turn to in-depth analyses of their techniques in order to measure their progress. After an intense workout or competition, coaches spend time breaking down athletic performances based on major movements. By compartmentalizing these activities, they can identify which motions are efficient and which ones hinder fluid motion. From this evaluation and discernment, athletes …

Higher Cluster Categories And Qft Dualities, Sebastián Franco, Gregg Musiker Jan 2018

Higher Cluster Categories And Qft Dualities, Sebastián Franco, Gregg Musiker

Publications and Research

We introduce a unified mathematical framework that elegantly describes minimally supersymmetry gauge theories in even dimensions, ranging from six dimensions to zero dimensions, and their dualities. This approach combines and extends recent developments on graded quivers with potentials, higher Ginzburg algebras, and higher cluster categories (also known as m-cluster categories). Quiver mutations studied in the context of mathematics precisely correspond to the order-(m + 1) dualities of the gauge theories. Our work indicates that these equivalences of quiver gauge theories sit inside an infinite family of such generalized dualities.

A New Proof Of The Existence Of Embedded Surfaces With Anosov Geodesic Flow, Victor J. Donnay Jan 2018

A New Proof Of The Existence Of Embedded Surfaces With Anosov Geodesic Flow, Victor J. Donnay

Mathematics Faculty Research and Scholarship

We give a new proof of the existence of compact surfaces embedded in ℝ3 with Anosov geodesic flows. This proof starts with a noncompact model surface whose geodesic flow is shown to be Anosov using a uniformly strictly invariant cone condition. Using a sequence of explicit maps based on the standard torus embedding, we produce compact embedded surfaces that can be seen as small perturbations of the Anosov model system and hence are themselves Anosov.

In Quest Of Bernstein Inequalities Rational Functions, Askey-Wilson Operator, And Summation Identities For Entire Functions, Rajitha Puwakgolle Gedara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The title of the dissertation gives an indication of the material involved with the connecting thread throughout being the classical Bernstein inequality (and its variants), which provides an estimate to the size of the derivative of a given polynomial on a prescribed set in the complex plane, relative to the size of the polynomial itself on the same set. Chapters 1 and 2 lay the foundation for the dissertation. In Chapter 1, we introduce the notations and terminology that will be used throughout. Also a brief historical recount is given on the origin of the Bernstein inequality, which dated back …

Application For Position And Load Reference Generation Of A Simulated Mechatronic Chain, Florentin Smarandache, V. Vladareanu, S.B. Cononovici, M. Migdalovici, H. Wang, Y. Feng

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The paper presents the position and load reference generation for a motor stand simulating a mechatronic chain, in this case a three degree of freedom robot leg. The task is accomplished using three PLC controlled motors in position as the robot joint actuators coupled with three controlled in torque, simulating the load at each simulation time-step. The paper briefly discusses the mathematical model and presents the visual interface used in the simulation, which is then to be further integrated into a virtual environment robot control application.

Shape Resonances Of The Transverse Magnetic Mode In A Spherically Stratified Medium, Umaporn Nuntaplook, John A. Adam Jan 2018

Shape Resonances Of The Transverse Magnetic Mode In A Spherically Stratified Medium, Umaporn Nuntaplook, John A. Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Although morphology-dependent resonances (MDRs) have been studied for decades, it is interesting to note that TM resonances have not been as widely investigated as those of the TE mode. Nevertheless, the formers are also worthy of additional study. Even though the TE and TM mode resonances can be generated using the same technique, their properties (such as the additional sharp peak in the source function at the particle surface) are quite distinct. We present the derivation of the resonance formulations for TM mode for both increasing and decreasing piecewise-constant refractive index profiles in a two-layer model of a sphere embedded …

On Saturation Numbers Of Ramsey-Minimal Graphs, Hunter M. Davenport Jan 2018

On Saturation Numbers Of Ramsey-Minimal Graphs, Hunter M. Davenport

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Dating back to the 1930's, Ramsey theory still intrigues many who study combinatorics. Roughly put, it makes the profound assertion that complete disorder is impossible. One view of this problem is in edge-colorings of complete graphs. For forbidden graphs H1,...,Hk and a graph G, we write G "arrows" (H1,...,Hk) if every k-edge-coloring of G contains a monochromatic copy of Hi in color i for some i=1,2,...,k. If c is a (red, blue)-edge-coloring of G, we say c is a bad coloring if G contains no red K3or blue K …

I’M Being Framed: Phase Retrieval And Frame Dilation In Finite-Dimensional Real Hilbert Spaces, Jason L. Greuling Jan 2018

I’M Being Framed: Phase Retrieval And Frame Dilation In Finite-Dimensional Real Hilbert Spaces, Jason L. Greuling

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Research has shown that a frame for an n-dimensional real Hilbert space offers phase retrieval if and only if it has the complement property. There is a geometric characterization of general frames, the Han-Larson-Naimark Dilation Theorem, which gives us the necessary and sufficient conditions required to dilate a frame for an n-dimensional Hilbert space to a frame for a Hilbert space of higher dimension k. However, a frame having the complement property in an n-dimensional real Hilbert space does not ensure that its dilation will offer phase retrieval. In this thesis, we will explore and provide what necessary and sufficient …
