Dressing Method And Quadratic Bundles Related To Symmetric Spaces: Vanishing Boundary Conditions, Tihomir Valchev Sep 2014

Dressing Method And Quadratic Bundles Related To Symmetric Spaces: Vanishing Boundary Conditions, Tihomir Valchev

Articles

We consider quadratic bundles related to Hermitian symmetric spaces of the type SU(m+n)/S(U(m) x U(n)). The simplest representative of the corresponding integrable hierarchy is given by a multi-component Kaup-Newell derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation which serves as a motivational example for our general considerations. We extensively discuss how one can apply Zakharov-Shabat's dressing procedure to derive reflectionless potentials obeying zero boundary conditions. Those could be used for one to construct fast decaying solutions to any nonlinear equation belonging to the same hierarchy. One can distinguish between generic soliton type solutions and rational solutions.

Cold Hard Fractals, David Buhl, Sam Morey Sep 2014

Cold Hard Fractals, David Buhl, Sam Morey

Journal Articles

Although many college mathematics students enjoy studying fractal geometry, more times than not, they question whether the content can be useful outside the classroom. This article describes a mathematical investigation that applied content from a fractal geometry unit to the real-world phenomena of ice formations on Lake Superior created by the recent winter.

Confidence Bands For Survival Curves Using Model Assisted Cox Regression, Shoubhik Mondal Aug 2014

Confidence Bands For Survival Curves Using Model Assisted Cox Regression, Shoubhik Mondal

Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to develop informative subject-specific simultaneous confidence bands (SCBs) for survival functions from right censored data. The approach is based on an extension of semiparametric random censorship models (SRCMs) to Cox regression, which produces reliable and more informative SCBs. SRCMs derive their rationale from their ability to utilize parametric ideas within the random censorship environment. Incorporating SRCMs into the existing framework produces more powerful procedures to analyze right censored data. The first part of the project focuses on proposing new estimators of Cox regression parameters and the cumulative baseline hazard function, and deriving their large …

Efficient Domain Decomposition Algorithms For The Solution Of The Helmholtz Equation, Dawid Midura Aug 2014

Efficient Domain Decomposition Algorithms For The Solution Of The Helmholtz Equation, Dawid Midura

Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to formulate and investigate new iterative methods for the solution of scattering problems based on the domain decomposition approach. This work is divided into three parts. In the first part, a new domain decomposition method for the perfectly matched layer system of equations is presented. Analysis of a simple model problem shows that the convergence of the new algorithm is guaranteed provided that a non-local, square-root transmission operator is used. For efficiency, in practical simulations such operators need to be localized. Current, state of the art domain decomposition algorithms use the localization technique based …

Skilled-Unskilled Wage Inequality: Economic Theory And Policy., Priya Brata Dutta Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Globalization and Skilled-unskilled wage inequality Globalization is the process of integration various economies of the world without creating any hindrances in the free flow of goods and services, technology, capital and even labour of human capital. The term, globalization has, therefore, following parameters: (i) Reduction of trade barriers to permit free flow of goods and services among nation-states; (ii) Creation of environment in which free flow of capital can take place among nation states; (iii) Creation of environment, permitting free flow of technology; and (iv) Last, but not least, from the point of view of developing countries, creation of environment …

Graph Theoretic Methods For The Analysis Of Data In Developing Systems, Kris H. Green, Bernard P. Ricca Aug 2014

Graph Theoretic Methods For The Analysis Of Data In Developing Systems, Kris H. Green, Bernard P. Ricca

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Faculty/Staff Publications

A full examination of learning or developing systems requires data analysis approaches beyond the commonplace pre-/post-testing. Drawing on graph theory, three particular approaches to the analysis of data—based on adjacency matrices, affiliation networks, and edit distances—can provide additional insight into data; these methods are applied to student performance in a Calculus course. Data analysis methods based on adjacency matrices demonstrate that learning is not unidimensional, that learning progressions do not always progress monotonically toward desired understandings and also provide insight into the connection between instruction and student learning. The use of affiliation networks supports the concept development theory of Lev …

Towards A Lightweight Approach For Modding Serious Educational Games: Assisting Novice Designers, Jacob Dahleen, Alex Hunsberger, Ryan Weber, Dennis Brylow, C. Shaun Longstreet, Kendra M. L. Cooper

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Serious educational games (SEGs) are a growing segment of the education community’s pedagogical toolbox. Effectively creating such games remains challenging, as teachers and industry trainers are content experts; typically they are not game designers with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience needed to create a quality SEG. Here, a lightweight approach to interactively explore and modify existing SEGs is introduced, a toll that can be broadly adopted by educators for pedagogically sound SEGs. Novice game designers can rapidly explore the educational and traditional elements of a game, with a stress on tracking the SEG learning objectives, as well as allowing …

Mechanisms Of Elastic Enhancement And Hindrance For Finite-Length Undulatory Swimmers In Viscoelastic Fluids, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy Aug 2014

Mechanisms Of Elastic Enhancement And Hindrance For Finite-Length Undulatory Swimmers In Viscoelastic Fluids, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

A computational model of finite-length undulatory swimmers is used to examine the physical origin of the effect of elasticity on swimming speed. We explore two distinct target swimming strokes: one derived from the motion of Caenorhabditis elegans, with large head undulations, and a contrasting stroke with large tail undulations. We show that both favorable stroke asymmetry and swimmer elasticity contribute to a speed-up, but a substantial boost results only when these two effects work together. We reproduce conflicting results from the literature simply by changing relevant physical parameters.

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A climatology of daytime midlatitude medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) observed by the Blackstone Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) radar is presented. MSTIDs were observed primarily from fall through spring. Two populations were observed: a dominant population heading southeast (centered at 147° geographic azimuth, ranging from 100° to 210°) and a secondary population heading northwest (centered at −50° azimuth, ranging from −75° to −25°). Horizontal velocities ranged from 50 to 250 m s−1 with a distribution maximum between 100 and 150 m s−1. Horizontal wavelengths ranged from 100 to 500 km with a distribution peak at 250 km, and …

Choosing Between Parametric And Non-Parametric Tests, Russ Johnson Aug 2014

Choosing Between Parametric And Non-Parametric Tests, Russ Johnson

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

A common question in comparing two sets of measurements is whether to use a parametric testing procedure or a non-parametric procedure. The question is even more important in dealing with smaller samples. Here, using simulation, several parametric and nonparametric tests, such as, t-test, Normal test, Wilcoxon Rank Sum test, van-der Waerden Score test, and Exponential Score test are compared.

On Sign-Solvable Linear Systems And Their Applications In Economics, Eric Hanson Aug 2014

On Sign-Solvable Linear Systems And Their Applications In Economics, Eric Hanson

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Sign-solvable linear systems are part of a branch of mathematics called qualitative matrix theory. Qualitative matrix theory is a development of matrix theory based on the sign (¡; 0; +) of the entries of a matrix. Sign-solvable linear systems are useful in analyzing situations in which quantitative data is unknown or had to measure, but qualitative information is known. These situations arise frequently in a variety of disciplines outside of mathematics, including economics and biology. The applications of sign-solvable linear systems in economics are documented and the development of new examples is formalized mathematically. Additionally, recent mathematical developments about sign-solvable …

Asymptotic Expansions And Computation Of Generalized Stirling Numbers And Generalized Stirling Functions, Tian-Xiao He Aug 2014

Asymptotic Expansions And Computation Of Generalized Stirling Numbers And Generalized Stirling Functions, Tian-Xiao He

Scholarship

Here presented is a unified approach to Stirling numbers and their generalizations as well as generalized Stirling functions by using generalized factorial functions, k-Gamma functions, and generalized divided difference. Previous well-known extensions of Stirling numbers due to Riordan, Carlitz, Howard, Charalambides-Koutras, Gould-Hopper, Hsu-Shiue, Tsylova Todorov, Ahuja-Enneking, and Stirling functions introduced by Butzer and Hauss, Butzer, Kilbas, and Trujilloet and others are included as particular cases of our generalization. Some basic properties related to our general pattern such as their recursive relations and generating functions are discussed. Some asymptotic expansions for the generalized Stirling functions and generalized Stirling numbers are established. …

Morphological Operations Applied To Digital Art Restoration, M. Kirbie Dramdahl

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

This paper provides an overview of the processes involved in detecting and removing cracks from digitized works of art. Specific attention is given to the crack detection phase as completed through the use of morphological operations. Mathematical morphology is an area of set theory applicable to image processing, and therefore lends itself effectively to the digital art restoration process.

Explorations In Elementary And Analytic Number Theory, Scott Michael Dunn Aug 2014

Explorations In Elementary And Analytic Number Theory, Scott Michael Dunn

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we investigate two distinct questions in number theory. Each question is dedicated its own chapter.

First, we consider arithmetic progressions in the polygonal numbers with a fixed number of sides. We will show that four-term arithmetic progressions cannot exist. We then describe explicitly how to find all three-term arithmetic progressions. Additionally we show that there are infinitely many three-term arithmetic progressions starting with an arbitrary polygonal number.

Second, we will show certain irreducibility criteria for polynomials. Let f(x) be a polynomial with non-negative integer coefficients such that f(b) is prime for some integer 2 ≤ b ≤ …

On The Group Of Transvections Of Ade-Diagrams, Marvin Jones Aug 2014

On The Group Of Transvections Of Ade-Diagrams, Marvin Jones

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we examine symplectic spaces with forms generated by the ADEdiagrams. Specifically, we determine the generators of the group of transvections for each space under the standard basis, S, of Kn (where K is a field with characteristic 0) and the hyperbolic basis, H, we get from the classification theorem of symplectic spaces. Further, we examine how the generators of these groups are related via g : Gf,S ! SL(Z)n where g(X) = P−1XP where P is the change of basis matrix for S to H.
