Motivic Integration Over Nilpotent Structures, Andrew Ryan Stout Oct 2014

Motivic Integration Over Nilpotent Structures, Andrew Ryan Stout

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis concerns developing the notion of Motivic Integration in such a way that it captures infinitesimal information yet reduces to the classical notion of motivic integration for reduced schemes. Moreover, I extend the notion of Motivic Integration from a discrete valuation ring to any complete Noetherian ring with residue field $\kappa$, where $\kappa$ is any field. Schoutens' functorial approach (as opposed to the traditional model theoretic approach) allows for some very general notions of motivic integration. However, the central focus is on using this general framework to study generically smooth schemes, then non-reduced schemes, and then, finally, formal schemes. …

A Mentoring Program For Inquiry-Based Teaching In A College Geometry Class, Nathaniel Miller, Nathan Wakefield Oct 2014

A Mentoring Program For Inquiry-Based Teaching In A College Geometry Class, Nathaniel Miller, Nathan Wakefield

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

This paper describes a mentoring program designed to prepare novice instructors to teach a college geometry class using inquiry-based methods. The mentoring program was used in a medium-sized public university with approximately 12,000 undergraduate students and 1,500 graduate students. The authors worked together to implement a mentoring program for the first time. One author was an associate professor and experienced using inquiry-based learning. The other author was a graduate student in mathematics education. During the course of the year the graduate student first observed and then taught a college level inquiry-based geometry course for pre-service teachers. This article describes the …

Self-Referentiality In Constructive Semantics Of Intuitionistic And Modal Logics, Junhua Yu Oct 2014

Self-Referentiality In Constructive Semantics Of Intuitionistic And Modal Logics, Junhua Yu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis explores self-referentiality in the framework of justification logic. In this framework initialed by Artemov, the language has formulas of the form t:F, which means "the term t is a justification of the formula F." Moreover, terms can occur inside formulas and hence it is legal to have t:F(t), which means "the term t is a justification of the formula F about t itself." Expressions like this is not only interesting in the semantics of justification logic, but also, as we will see, necessary in applications of justification logic in formalizing constructive contents implicitly carried by modal and intuitionistic …

An Algorithmic Approach To The Differential Galois Theory Of Second-Order Linear Differential Equations With Differential Parameters, Carlos Eduardo Arreche Aguayo Oct 2014

An Algorithmic Approach To The Differential Galois Theory Of Second-Order Linear Differential Equations With Differential Parameters, Carlos Eduardo Arreche Aguayo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We present algorithms to compute the differential Galois group G associated via the parameterized Picard-Vessiot theory to a parameterized second-order linear differential equation with respect to d/dx, with coefficients in the field of rational functions F(x) over a differential field F, where we think of the derivations on F as being derivations with respect to parameters. We build on an earlier procedure, developed by Dreyfus, that computes G when the equation is unimodular, assuming either that G is reductive, or else that its maximal reductive quotient is differentially constant. We first show how to modify the space of parametric derivations …

Combinatorial Properties Of Polyiamonds, Christopher Larson Oct 2014

Combinatorial Properties Of Polyiamonds, Christopher Larson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Polyiamonds are plane geometric figures constructed by pasting together equilateral triangles edge-to-edge. It is shown that a diophantine equation involving vertices of degrees 2, 3, 5 and 6 holds for all polyiamonds; then an Eberhard-type theorem is proved, showing that any four-tuple of non-negative integers that satisfies the diophantine equation can be realized geometrically by a polyiamond. Further combinatorial and graph-theoretic aspects of polyiamonds are discussed, including a characterization of those polyiamonds that are three-connected and so three-polytopal, a result on Hamiltonicity, and constructions that use minimal numbers of triangles in realizing four-vectors.

Martingales For Uniformly Quasisymmetric Circle Endomorphisms, Yunchun Hu Oct 2014

Martingales For Uniformly Quasisymmetric Circle Endomorphisms, Yunchun Hu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The main subject studied in this thesis is the space of all uniformly quasisymmetric circle endomorphisms preserving the Lebesgue measure. Although many of our arguments work for any degree d≥2, our proof will be mainly written for degree 2 maps.

We will introduce a sequence of Markov partitions of the unit circle by using preimages of the fixed point of such circle endomorphism f. The uniform quasisymmetry condition is equivalent to the bounded nearby geometry condition of the Markov partitions. In Chapter 2 of this thesis, for each f, we use the Lebesgue invariant condition and the …

The Scientific Theories Of Michael Faraday And James Clerk Maxwell, Shannon P. Israelsen Sep 2014

The Scientific Theories Of Michael Faraday And James Clerk Maxwell, Shannon P. Israelsen

The Purdue Historian

This paper explores the role of mathematical formalism in physics theories through an analysis of the work of physicists Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell in the field of electromagnetism. After a brief description of the educational backgrounds of each scientist, their views on the nature of physics theory and its relationship to mathematics are contrasted. Faraday sought a mathematics-free theory to describe the results of his experiments, producing a family of concepts that became the roots of electromagnetic field theory. Maxwell built upon these concepts, giving them robust mathematical expression and incorporating them into one unified theoretical picture. An …

Proximinality Properties Of Subspaces And Intersection Properties Of Balls In Banach Spaces., Jayanarayanan C. R. Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this chapter, we explain the background and the main theme of this thesis and provide a chapter-wise summary of its principal results. We introduce some notations and preliminaries that will be used in the subsequent chapters.Study of proximinality related properties and ball intersection related properties of Banach spaces have been an active area of research in the field of geometry of Banach spaces. In this thesis, we mainly study these two classes of Banach space theoretic properties. We consider only Banach spaces over the real field R and all subspaces we consider are assumed to be closed.1.1 PreliminariesFor a Banach …

Performance Comparison Of Projective Elliptic-Curve Point Multiplication In 64-Bit X86 Runtime Environment, Ninh Winson Sep 2014

Performance Comparison Of Projective Elliptic-Curve Point Multiplication In 64-Bit X86 Runtime Environment, Ninh Winson

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

For over two decades, mathematicians and cryptologists have evaluated and presented the theoretical performance of Elliptic-curve scalar point-multiplication in projective geometry. Because computation in projective domain is composed of a wide array of formulations and computing optimizations, there is not a comprehensive performance comparison of point-multiplication using projective transformation available to verify its realistic efficiency in 64-bit x86 computing platforms. Today, research on explicit mathematical formulations in projective domain continues to excel by seeking higher computational efficiency and ease of realization. An explicit performance evaluation will help implementers choose better implementation methods and improve Elliptic-curve scalar point-multiplication. This paper was …

Synthetic Lethality As A Promising Approach For Targeted Cancer Prevention, Wei Tu, Hua Wang, Guang Peng Sep 2014

Synthetic Lethality As A Promising Approach For Targeted Cancer Prevention, Wei Tu, Hua Wang, Guang Peng

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Carcinogenesis is recognized as a multistep process. It occurs over a relative long span of time, which offers intervention opportunities for cancer prevention [1] . Using drugs to prevent cancer rather than treat cancer is the major research goal in the field of ‘chemoprevention’. Tremendous research efforts have been devoted toward using natural, synthetic or biological agents to prevent, suppress or delay the initiation and or the progression of premalignant cells to cancer [1] . However a big challenge for effective cancer prevention is to identify chemoprevention agents with demonstrable efficacy and safety for healthy general …

An Optimal Three-Way Stable And Monotonic Spectrum Of Bounds On Quantiles: A Spectrum Of Coherent Measures Of Financial Risk And Economic Inequality, Iosif Pinelis Sep 2014

An Optimal Three-Way Stable And Monotonic Spectrum Of Bounds On Quantiles: A Spectrum Of Coherent Measures Of Financial Risk And Economic Inequality, Iosif Pinelis

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

A spectrum of upper bounds (Qα(X ; p) αε[0,∞] on the (largest) (1-p)-quantile Q(X;p) of an arbitrary random variable X is introduced and shown to be stable and monotonic in α, p, and X , with Q0(X ;p) = Q(X;p). If p is small enough and the distribution of X is regular enough, then Qα(X ; p) is rather close to Q(X ; p). Moreover, these quantile bounds are coherent measures of risk. Furthermore, Qα(X ; p) is the optimal value in a certain minimization problem, the minimizers in which are described …

The Bernoulli Family: Their Massive Contributions To Mathematics And Hostility Toward Each Other, Dung (Yom) Bui, Mohamed Allali Sep 2014

The Bernoulli Family: Their Massive Contributions To Mathematics And Hostility Toward Each Other, Dung (Yom) Bui, Mohamed Allali

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

Throughout the history of mathematics, there are several individuals with significant contributions. However, if we look at the contribution of a single family in this field, the Bernoulli probably outshines others in terms of both the number of mathematicians it produced and their influence on the development of mathematics. The most outstanding three Bernoulli mathematicians are Jacob I Bernoulli (1654-1705), Johann I Bernoulli (1667-1748), and Daniel Bernoulli (1700-1782), all three of whom were the most influential math experts in the academic community yet very hostile to each other. Their family structure and jealousy toward each other might have fueled their …

Energy And Potential Enstrophy Flux Constraints In Quasi-Geostrophic Models, Eleftherios Gkioulekas Sep 2014

Energy And Potential Enstrophy Flux Constraints In Quasi-Geostrophic Models, Eleftherios Gkioulekas

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We investigate an inequality constraining the energy and potential enstrophy flux spectra in two-layer and multi-layer quasi-geostrophic models. Its physical significance is that it can diagnose whether any given multi-layer model that allows co-existing downscale cascades of energy and potential enstrophy can allow the downscale energy flux to become large enough to yield a mixed energy spectrum where the dominant k−3 scaling is overtaken by a subdominant k−5/3 contribution beyond a transition wavenumber kt situated in the inertial range. The validity of the flux inequality implies that this scaling transition cannot occur within the inertial range, whereas a violation of …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Biological Boolean Networks Using Information Fusion Based On Nonadditive Set Functions, Naomi Kochi, Tomáš Helikar, Laura Allen, Jim A. Rogers, Zhenyuan Wang, Mihaela Teodora Matache Sep 2014

Sensitivity Analysis Of Biological Boolean Networks Using Information Fusion Based On Nonadditive Set Functions, Naomi Kochi, Tomáš Helikar, Laura Allen, Jim A. Rogers, Zhenyuan Wang, Mihaela Teodora Matache

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Background: An algebraic method for information fusion based on nonadditive set functions is used to assess the joint contribution of Boolean network attributes to the sensitivity of the network to individual node mutations. The node attributes or characteristics under consideration are: in-degree, out-degree, minimum and average path lengths, bias, average sensitivity of Boolean functions, and canalizing degrees. The impact of node mutations is assessed using as target measure the average Hamming distance between a non-mutated/wild-type network and a mutated network.

Results: We find that for a biochemical signal transduction network consisting of several main signaling pathways whose nodes represent signaling …

Fast Inverse Distance Weighting-Based Spatiotemporal Interpolation: A Web-Based Application Of Interpolating Daily Fine Particulate Matter Pm2.5 In The Contiguous U.S. Using Parallel Programming And K-D Tree, Lixin Li, Travis Losser, Charles Yorke, Reinhard E. Piltner Sep 2014

Fast Inverse Distance Weighting-Based Spatiotemporal Interpolation: A Web-Based Application Of Interpolating Daily Fine Particulate Matter Pm2.5 In The Contiguous U.S. Using Parallel Programming And K-D Tree, Lixin Li, Travis Losser, Charles Yorke, Reinhard E. Piltner

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Epidemiological studies have identified associations between mortality and changes in concentration of particulate matter. These studies have highlighted the public concerns about health effects of particulate air pollution. Modeling fine particulate matter PM2.5exposure risk and monitoring day-to-day changes in PM2.5 concentration is a critical step for understanding the pollution problem and embarking on the necessary remedy. This research designs, implements and compares two inverse distance weighting (IDW)-based spatiotemporal interpolation methods, in order to assess the trend of daily PM2.5 concentration for the contiguous United States over the year of 2009, at both the census block group level and county level. …

Continuous Dependence Of Solutions Of Equations On Parameters, Sean A. Broughton Sep 2014

Continuous Dependence Of Solutions Of Equations On Parameters, Sean A. Broughton

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

It is shown under very general conditions that the solutions of equations depend continuously on the coefficients or parameters of the equations. The standard examples are solutions of monic polynomial equations and the eigenvalues of a matrix. However, the proof methods apply to any finite map T : Cn -> Cn.

A Module Isomorphism Between H∗T (G/P)⊗H∗T (P/B) And H∗T (G/B), Elizabeth Drellich, Julianna Tymoczko Sep 2014

A Module Isomorphism Between H∗T (G/P)⊗H∗T (P/B) And H∗T (G/B), Elizabeth Drellich, Julianna Tymoczko

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

We give an explicit (new) morphism of modules between H∗T (G/P)⊗H∗T (P/B) and H∗T (G/B) and prove (the known result) that the two modules are isomorphic. Our map identifies submodules of the cohomology of the flag variety that are isomorphic to each of H∗T (G/P) and H∗ T (P/B). With this identification, the map is simply the product within the ring H∗T (G/B). We use this map in two ways. First we describe module bases for H∗T (G/B) that are different from traditional Schubert classes and from …

On Second Order Elliptic Equations And Variational Inequalities With Anisotropic Principal Operators, Vy Khoi Le Sep 2014

On Second Order Elliptic Equations And Variational Inequalities With Anisotropic Principal Operators, Vy Khoi Le

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper is about boundary value problems of the form where ƨ is a convex function of ξ.∈ RN rather than a function of the norm|ξ|. The problem is formulated appropriately in an anisotropic Orlicz-Sobolev space associated with ƨ. We study the existence of solutions and some other properties of the above problem and its corresponding variational inequality in such space.

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions Iv: Theory And Classification Using Generalized Means, Nataniel Greene Sep 2014

Generalized Least-Squares Regressions Iv: Theory And Classification Using Generalized Means, Nataniel Greene

Publications and Research

The theory of generalized least-squares is reformulated here using the notion of generalized means. The generalized least-squares problem seeks a line which minimizes the average generalized mean of the square deviations in x and y. The notion of a generalized mean is equivalent to the generating function concept of the previous papers but allows for a more robust understanding and has an already existing literature. Generalized means are applied to the task of constructing more examples, simplifying the theory, and further classifying generalized least-squares regressions.

Chutes And Ladders With Large Spinners, Darcie E. Connors, Darren B. Glass Sep 2014

Chutes And Ladders With Large Spinners, Darcie E. Connors, Darren B. Glass

Math Faculty Publications

We prove a conjecture from a 2011 College Mathematics Journal article addressing the expected number of turns in a Chutes and Ladders game when the spinner range is close to the length of the board. While the original paper approached the question using linear algebra and the theory of Markov processes, our main method uses combinatorics and recursion.

Pharyngeal And Cervical Cancer Incidences Significantly Correlate With Personal Uv Doses Among Whites In The United States, Dianne E. Godar, Rong Tang, Stephen Merrill Sep 2014

Pharyngeal And Cervical Cancer Incidences Significantly Correlate With Personal Uv Doses Among Whites In The United States, Dianne E. Godar, Rong Tang, Stephen Merrill

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Because we found UV-exposed oral tissue cells have reduced DNA repair and apoptotic cell death compared with skin tissue cells, we asked if a correlation existed between personal UV dose and the incidences of oral and pharyngeal cancer in the United States. We analyzed the International Agency for Research on Cancer's incidence data for oral and pharyngeal cancers by race (white and black) and sex using each state's average annual personal UV dose. We refer to our data as ‘white’ rather than ‘Caucasian,’ which is a specific subgroup of whites, and ‘black’ rather than African-American because blacks from other countries …

Fibonacci Number Of The Tadpole Graph, Joe Demaio, John Jacobson Sep 2014

Fibonacci Number Of The Tadpole Graph, Joe Demaio, John Jacobson

Faculty Articles

In 1982, Prodinger and Tichy defined the Fibonacci number of a graph G to be the number of independent sets of the graph G. They did so since the Fibonacci number of the path graph Pn is the Fibonacci number F(n+2) and the Fibonacci number of the cycle graph Cn is the Lucas number Ln. The tadpole graph Tn,k is the graph created by concatenating Cn and Pk with an edge from any vertex of Cn to a pendant of Pk for integers n=3 and k=0. This paper establishes formulae and identities for the Fibonacci number of the tadpole graph …

Characterizations Of A Class Of Distributions By Dual Generalized Order Statistics And Truncated Moments, Filippo Domma, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

The problem of characterizing a distribution is an important problem which has recently attracted the attention of many researchers. Thus, various characterizations have been established in many different directions. The present work deals with the characterizations of a general class of distributions. These characterizations are based on: (i) a simple relationship between two truncated moments, (ii) truncated moment of certain functions of the nth order statistic, (iii) single truncated moment of certain functions of the random variable and (iv) moments of dual generalized order statistics. We like to mention that the characterization (i) which is expressed in terms of the ratio …
