Many organisms, from bacteria to primates, use stochastic movement patterns to find food. These movement patterns, known as search strategies, have recently be- come a focus of ecologists interested in identifying universal properties of optimal foraging behavior. In this dissertation, I describe three contributions to this field. First, I propose a way to extend Charnov's Marginal Value Theorem to the spatially explicit framework of stochastic search strategies. Next, I describe simulations that compare the efficiencies of sensory and memory-based composite search strategies, which involve switching between different behavioral modes. In this paper, we consider the existence of multiple solutions for the following p(x)-Laplacian equations with critical Sobolev growth conditions
−div(|∇u| p(x)−2 ∇u) + |u| p(x)−2 u = f(x, u) in Ω,
u = 0 on ∂Ω.
We show the existence of infinitely many pairs of solutions by applying the Fountain Theorem and the Dual Fountain Theorem respectively. We also present a variant of the concentration-compactness principle, which is of independent interest.

There is a well-established instability index theory for linear and quadratic matrix polynomials for which the coefficient matrices are Hermitian and skew-Hermitian. This theory relates the number of negative directions for the matrix coefficients which are Hermitian to the total number of unstable eigenvalues for the polynomial. Herein we extend the theory to *-even matrix polynomials of any finite degree. In particular, unlike previously known cases we show that the instability index depends upon the size of the matrices when the degree of the polynomial is greater than two. In this thesis we study the travel time problem based on the known traffic density model. Using the conservation law, we model the travel time function by a boundary value problem of a non homogeneous linear hyperbolic equation. The equation is transformed into an initial value hyperbolic equation, and the well-posedness of the problem is discussed. The mathematical analysis for both density and travel problems are given. We also derive the analytic solutions for several special cases of traffic density. Numerical schemes are proposed for solving for travel time problem. Cryptography is the study of a centuries–old technique of secretly transferring information between parties. Linear recurrences were the chosen method of encryption and decryption in the thesis. The Fibonacci sequence, with its Zeckendorf representation, allows for the flexibility of encoding any number desired based on a particular encoding technique used in the film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The main goal is to find other linear recurrences that possess characteristics similar to the Fibonacci sequence to use as suitable substitutes for encoding. This experiment uses an electromagnetic shaker to produce standing wave patterns on the surface of a vertically oscillating sample of silicon liquid. These surface waves, known as Faraday waves, form shapes such as squares, lines, and hexagons. They are known to be dependent upon the frequency and amplitude of the forcing as well as on the viscosity and depth of the liquid in the dish. At a depth of 4mm and for various silicon liquids having kinematic viscosities of 10, 20, and 38 cSt, we determined the acceleration at which patterns form for frequencies between 10 and 60 Hz. For …

Hilbert algebras are introduced for investigations in intuitionistic and other non - classical logics and BE -algebra is a generalization of dual BCK -algebra. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between Hilbert algebras and BE -algebras. In fact, we show that a commutative implicative BE -algebra is equivalent to the commutative self distributive BE -algebra, therefore Hilbert algebras and commutative self distributive BE -algebras are equivalent.

In this article, a new numerical method is proposed for solving a class of fractional order optimal control problems. The fractional derivative is considered in the Caputo sense. This approach is based on a combination of the perturbation homotopy and parameterization methods. The control function u(t) is approximated by polynomial functions with unknown coefficients. This method converts the fractional order optimal control problem to an optimization problem. Numerical results are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the method.

This paper is devoted to the study and develops the generalized fractional integral operators for a new special function, which is called Aleph-function. The considered generalized fractional integration operators contain the Appell hypergeometric function F3 as a kernel. We establish two results of the product of two Aleph-functions involving Saigo-Maeda operators. On account of the general nature of the Saigo-Maeda operators and the Aleph-function, some results involving Saigo, Riemann-Liouville and Erdélyi-Kober integral operators are obtained as special cases of the main result.

We introduce a log-linear regression model based on the beta generalized half-normal distribution (Pescim et al., 2010). We formulate and develop a log-linear model using a new distribution so-called the log-beta generalized half normal distribution. We derive expansions for the cumulative distribution and density functions which do not depend on complicated functions. We obtain formal expressions for the moments and moment generating function. We characterize the proposed distribution using a simple relationship between two truncated moments. An advantage of the new distribution is that it includes as special sub-models classical distributions reported in the lifetime literature. We also show that …

In this paper the concept of reducibility in graph theory is discussed, and the deletable vertex (edge) in graph (digraph) is defined. The class of graphs (digraphs) ℛ is called vertex (edge) reducible if for any G∈ ℛ either ℛ is the trivial graph (null graph) or it contains a vertex (edge) v such that G-v∈ ℛ. We introduce some classes of graphs (digraphs) which are reducible and others which are not. The vertex reducibility and edge reducibility of Eulerian graphs and Eulerian digraphs have also been studied.

A road system is a collection of subsets of a set—the roads—such that every singleton subset is a road in the system and every doubleton subset is contained in a road. In a 2011 paper by Beeler and Hoilman, the game of peg solitaire is generalized to arbitrary boards. These boards are treated as graphs in the combinatorial sense. An open problem from that paper is to determine the minimum number of edges necessary for a graph with a fixed number of vertices to be solvable. This thesis provides new bounds on this number. It also provides necessary and sufficient conditions for two families of graphs to be solvable, along with criticality results, and the maximum number of pegs that can be left in each of the two graph families.

We consider a cavity filled with fluid whose three sides are stationary and the lid at the top is moving at a constant speed. The flow in the cavity is modeled using the conservation of mass and momentum equations with proper boundary conditions. We compute the fluid velocity for the steady state case using the finite element method. We seek the weak formulation and develop a finite element model based on the Galerkin method.
