Sizing Of An Ammonia Discharge Tank, Tuliagenda Beckfords
Sizing Of An Ammonia Discharge Tank, Tuliagenda Beckfords
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
Phosphate companies use well-stirred tanks to regulate the concentration of ammonia they discharge via their wastewater, preventing ammonia spikes from exceeding the cap set by the Environmental Protection Agency. This report discusses the methods used to determine the minimum possible volume of the tank required to regulate wastewater discharge. With this information, it was determined that the use of a stirring tank is an efficient and cost effective way to regulate ammonia discharge. Based on these results many other companies may use this method to decrease the negative effects of ammonia on the environment.
Comparison Of First Gear Performance For Manual And Automatic Transmissions, Kyle Stottlemyer
Comparison Of First Gear Performance For Manual And Automatic Transmissions, Kyle Stottlemyer
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The purpose of this project is to compare the first gear performance of an automobile for both its manual and automatic transmission options. Each transmission type has a different gear ratio, which yields a different acceleration curve for each transmission throughout the torque-rpm curve of the engine. The method of integral calculus was used to find an equation which could be used to solve for time at any point in the car's acceleration. The automobile velocity versus time was then graphed to compare each transmissions acceleration trend. This process is similar to that which automotive companies may use when determining …
Optimization Of A Pressure-Treating Process, Josean Velez
Optimization Of A Pressure-Treating Process, Josean Velez
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
A company that pressure-treats wood wants to minimize its annual cost without using more than 250 days of operation per year. In addition, they want to find the corresponding value of time, batches and cost for each category. We develop an expression in terms of boards per batch to model the total cost of the treatment process. We then take the derivative and use Newton's Method to find the number of boards per batch that minimizes total cost.
Length Of A Hanging Cable, Eric Costello
Length Of A Hanging Cable, Eric Costello
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The shape of a cable hanging under its own weight and uniform horizontal tension between two power poles is a catenary. The catenary is a curve which has an equation defined by a hyperbolic cosine function and a scaling factor. The scaling factor for power cables hanging under their own weight is equal to the horizontal tension on the cable divided by the weight of the cable. Both of these values are unknown for this problem. Newton's method was used to approximate the scaling factor and the arc length function to determine the length of the cable. A script was …
Design Of A Rainwater Catchment System, Neil Cammardella
Design Of A Rainwater Catchment System, Neil Cammardella
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
Certain dimensions of a rainwater catchment and storage system were optimized using climatological and sociological data. Using only daily demand and average daily rain fall data, the following dimensions were optimized: 1) The horizontal roof area needed to collect the daily demand of water, 2) The tank size needed to store all the water collected during a heavy rain event, 3) When full, how long the tank will be able to provide water without rain, and 4) The diameter of the outlet flow orifice. With these calculations, we can design a rainwater catchment system that can capture the daily demand …
Optimal Operation Of A Concentrator, Katrina Stine
Optimal Operation Of A Concentrator, Katrina Stine
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
Concentrators are used in the industrial world to remove water from a chemical or substance by heating the liquid until the water evaporates thereby concentrating the remaining substance. The goal of this project is to find the optimum cycle time, number of cycles per year, and the heating element area that would minimize the total annual cost and hours of operation of an industrial concentrator. It was found that the specified concentrator would achieve a minimum total cost of $48,720.50 per year and take 993.8 hours to meet the production goal of evaporating one million kilograms of water.
Average Light Intensity Inside A Photobioreactor, Herby Jean
Average Light Intensity Inside A Photobioreactor, Herby Jean
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
For energy production, microalgae are one of the few alternatives with high potential. Similar to plants, algae require energy acquired from light sources to grow. This project uses calculus to determine the light intensity inside of a photobioreactor filled with algae. Under preset conditions along with estimated values, we applied Lambert-Beer's law to formulate an equation to calculate how much light intensity escapes a photobioreactor and determine the average light intensity that was present inside the reactor.
The Effects Of Age On Short-Term Memory Loss Due To Proactive Interference, Alisha Berkauzer
The Effects Of Age On Short-Term Memory Loss Due To Proactive Interference, Alisha Berkauzer
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
This project focused on how proactive interference affects the short-term memory of people based on their age. The goal was to find the prime age for learning information and storing it in one's memory. Seven people from ages fifteen to forty were tested individually, using a set color pattern, in order to see how well each individual could remember the different color patterns as difficulty of the pattern increased. The obtained data was fitted by the polynomial regression. The “fitted” curve shows that as age increases, the individual's performance in memorizing the more difficult patterns decreases. Also, the peaked level …
Going Ballistic: Bullet Trajectories, Amanda Wade
Going Ballistic: Bullet Trajectories, Amanda Wade
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
This project seeks to answer at what angle does a gun marksman have to aim in order to hit the center of a target one meter off the ground and 1000 meters away? We begin by modeling the bullet's trajectory using Euler's method with the help of a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet solver, and then systematically search for the angle corresponding to the center of the target. It was found that a marksman shooting a target 1000 meters away and 1 meter off the ground has to aim the rifle 0.436° above horizontal to hit the center.
Travelling Distance Of A Skimboard, Michael Rzonca
Travelling Distance Of A Skimboard, Michael Rzonca
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The purpose of this project was to determine the optimum conditions to maximize the distance travelled on a skimboard. Given the differential equation that governs the changes in velocity of the skimboard, we were able to integrate and find an expression for the distance travelled by the skimboard. Using this expression we substitute different values for variables, such as angle of attack and resistance caused by the surface area of the rider, to explore the effect on the total distance travelled by the skimboard.
Roller Coasters Need Calculus Too!, Christina Marshall
Roller Coasters Need Calculus Too!, Christina Marshall
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
Using the specifications of the given launch roller coaster, we were able to determine the position vector of the roller coaster as a function of time. After determining the position function, we took the derivative of this function to calculate the velocity of the coaster as a function of time. From this calculated velocity vector, we were able to determine the time required for the coaster to reach its maximum height. We substitute this time value back into the position function to determine the maximum height the launch roller coaster can obtain.
Adiabatic Flame Temperature For Combustion Of Methane, Rebeca Pupo
Adiabatic Flame Temperature For Combustion Of Methane, Rebeca Pupo
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
This project calculated the adiabatic flame temperature of a combustion reaction of pure methane and oxygen, assuming that all of the heat liberated by the combustion reaction goes into heating the resulting mixture. Mole fractions of methane to oxygen were computed from 0.05 to 0.95, in increments of 0.05, and then an integral was computed was computed with respect to temperature using the moles of product produced or leftover moles of reactants from the starting mole fraction times the specific heat of each respective gas. The highest adiabatic flame temperature evaluated, occurred at a mole fraction of 0.35.

Model For Facial Cooling, Jacalyn Sampson
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The goal of this project is to estimate the ambient temperature and the wind speed that cause painful sensation in a cheek. Our findings confirm that the higher the wind speed, the less cold air is required to cause cheek pain.
Four Popular Books On Consumer Debt: A Context For Quantitative Literacy, Andrew J. Miller
Four Popular Books On Consumer Debt: A Context For Quantitative Literacy, Andrew J. Miller
Numeracy
The topics of credit cards, mortgages, subprime lending, and fringe banking are rich sources of problems and discussions for classes focused on quantitative literacy. In this theme book review, we look at four recent books on the consumer debt industry: Credit Card Nation, by Robert Manning; Maxed Out, by James Scurlock; Collateral Damaged, by Charles Geisst; and Broke, USA, by Gary Rivlin. Credit Card Nation takes a scholarly look at the history of credit in America with a focus on the genesis and growth of the credit card industry up to the turn of the 20th century. Maxed Out also …
Personal And Professional Numeracy: A Unit For Pre-Service Teachers At The University Of Tasmania, Jane M. Watson
Personal And Professional Numeracy: A Unit For Pre-Service Teachers At The University Of Tasmania, Jane M. Watson
Numeracy
This paper addresses issues associated with the development of a unit preparing pre-service teachers to be quantitatively literate in three respects. These issues surround (i) the need to be aware of numeracy demands across the curriculum, (ii) the need to model numerate behavior in all interactions of teachers, and (iii) the need to be able to interpret and use system data provided from local and national testing programs. The context for the unit described is Australia, where a national testing program for literacy and numeracy requires teachers to analyze extensive data on their students, a national curriculum requires teachers of …
Minimal And Symmetric Global Partition Polynomials For Reproducing Kernel Elements, Mario Jesus Juha
Minimal And Symmetric Global Partition Polynomials For Reproducing Kernel Elements, Mario Jesus Juha
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Reproducing Kernel Element Method is a numerical technique that combines finite element and meshless methods to construct shape functions of arbitrary order and continuity, yet retains the Kronecker-δ property. Central to constructing these shape functions is the construction of global partition polynomials on an element. This dissertation shows that asymmetric interpolations may arise due to such things as changes in the local to global node numbering and that may adversely affect the interpolation capability of the method. This issue arises due to the use in previous formulations of incomplete polynomials that are subsequently non-affine invariant. This dissertation lays out …
Problems In Classical Potential Theory With Applications To Mathematical Physics, Erik Lundberg
Problems In Classical Potential Theory With Applications To Mathematical Physics, Erik Lundberg
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis we are interested in some problems regarding harmonic functions. The topics are divided into three chapters.
Chapter 2 concerns singularities developed by solutions of the Cauchy problem for a holomorphic elliptic equation, especially Laplace's equation. The principal motivation is to locate the singularities of the Schwarz potential. The results have direct applications to Laplacian growth (or the Hele-Shaw problem).
Chapter 3 concerns the Dirichlet problem when the boundary is an algebraic set and the data is a polynomial or a real-analytic function. We pursue some questions related to the Khavinson-Shapiro conjecture. A main topic of interest is …
Parametric And Bayesian Modeling Of Reliability And Survival Analysis, Carlos A. Molinares
Parametric And Bayesian Modeling Of Reliability And Survival Analysis, Carlos A. Molinares
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study is to compare Bayesian and parametric approaches to determine the best for estimating reliability in complex systems. Determining reliability is particularly important in business and medical contexts. As expected, the Bayesian method showed the best results in assessing the reliability of systems.
In the first study, the Bayesian reliability function under the Higgins-Tsokos loss function using Jeffreys as its prior performs similarly as when the Bayesian reliability function is based on the squared-error loss. In addition, the Higgins-Tsokos loss function was found to be as robust as the squared-error loss function and slightly more efficient. …

Go Figure: Calculus Students' Use Of Figures And Graphs In Technical Report Writing, Thomas J. Pfaff, Michael Rogers, Ali Erkan, Jason G. Hamilton
Numeracy
Understanding how to read and use graphs to communicate scientific and mathematical information is critical for STEM majors, as well as an important part of quantitative literacy. Our study suggests that first-semester calculus students do not know how to use graphs in a technical report without explicit instruction. Although not a surprising result, it leaves us wondering about when such skills are developed, and if calculus I is a place to start. Our work is now exploring the potential benefit on students' use of graphs by having them formally evaluate other students' reports.
Reflections On The Tenth Anniversary Of Mathematics And Democracy, Lynn Arthur Steen, Bernard L. Madison
Reflections On The Tenth Anniversary Of Mathematics And Democracy, Lynn Arthur Steen, Bernard L. Madison
Numeracy
Two independent reflections by early proponents of quantitative literacy connect today's numeracy initiative with its origin in concern about school tests, its impact on students today, and the challenges of democracy. Even as interest in QL grows in many places, evidence of need also grows. Moreover, well-meaning programs with other goals—especially at the K-12 level—often channel education in directions that fail to advance numeracy. Examples show that both students and teachers are enthusiastic when offered QL opportunities, but that individual beliefs and public decisions often belie the goals of QL.
Calculus, Biology And Medicine: A Case Study In Quantitative Literacy For Science Students, Kim Rheinlander, Dorothy Wallace
Calculus, Biology And Medicine: A Case Study In Quantitative Literacy For Science Students, Kim Rheinlander, Dorothy Wallace
Numeracy
This paper describes a course designed to enhance the numeracy of biology and pre-medical students. The course introduces students with the background of one semester of calculus to systems of nonlinear ordinary differential equations as they appear in the mathematical biology literature. Evaluation of the course showed increased enjoyment and confidence in doing mathematics, and an increased appreciation of the utility of mathematics to science. Students who complete this course are better able to read the research literature in mathematical biology and carry out research problems of their own.
Generalizations Of A Laplacian-Type Equation In The Heisenberg Group And A Class Of Grushin-Type Spaces, Kristen Snyder Childers
Generalizations Of A Laplacian-Type Equation In The Heisenberg Group And A Class Of Grushin-Type Spaces, Kristen Snyder Childers
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In [2], Beals, Gaveau and Greiner find the fundamental solution to a 2-Laplace-type equation in a class of sub-Riemannian spaces. This fundamental solution is based on the well-known fundamental solution to the p-Laplace equation in Grushin-type spaces [4] and the Heisenberg group [6]. In this thesis, we look to generalize the work in [2] for a p-Laplace-type equation. After discovering that the "natural" generalization fails, we find two generalizations whose solutions are based on the fundamental solution to the p-Laplace equation.
Automorphism Groups Of Quandles, Jennifer Macquarrie
Automorphism Groups Of Quandles, Jennifer Macquarrie
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis arose from a desire to better understand the structures of automorphism groups and inner automorphism groups of quandles. We compute and give the structure of the automorphism groups of all dihedral quandles. In their paper Matrices and Finite Quandles, Ho and Nelson found all quandles (up to isomorphism) of orders 3, 4, and 5 and determined their automorphism groups. Here we find the automorphism groups of all quandles of orders 6 and 7. There are, up to isomoprhism, 73 quandles of order 6 and 289 quandles of order 7.

What mathematical topics do educators committed to teaching mathematics in context choose for their students when given the opportunity to develop an educational resource explicitly to teach mathematics in context? This paper examines the choices made for the 55 modules by 40 authors in the General Collection of the Spreadsheets Across the Curriculum (SSAC) library. About half of the modules were made by authors from natural science, and about 60% of the other modules were by authors from mathematics. The modules are tagged with terms of a search vocabulary developed for the browse page of the collection. The four terms …
Topics In Random Knots And R-Matrices From Frobenius Algebras, Enver Karadayi
Topics In Random Knots And R-Matrices From Frobenius Algebras, Enver Karadayi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we study two areas of interest in knot theory: Random knots in the unit cube, and the Yang-Baxter solutions constructed from Frobenius algebras.
The study of random knots can be thought of as a model of DNA strings situated in confinement. A random knot with n vertices is a polygonal loop formed by selecting n distinct points in the unit cube, for a positive integer n, and connecting these points by straight line segments successively, such that the last point selected is joined with the first one. We present a step by step description of our algorithm …

The Master of Science in Numeracy program at Alfred University received full approval from the New York State Education Department (NYSED) in May of 2007. This first-of-its-kind program seeks to provide teachers at all levels, from across the curriculum, the skills, and more importantly the confidence, to introduce relevant quantitative concepts in their own disciplines. Created to be a complement of the MS Ed. in Literacy, the 30-hour MS in Numeracy program consists of four required core courses (Teaching Numeracy, Teaching with Data, Assessment and Learning Theories in Numeracy, and Doing Science and Numeracy), five electives from a list of …
Parts Of The Whole: Thinking About Variance: Standards, Targets, Tracking, And Other Thoughts, Dorothy Wallace
Parts Of The Whole: Thinking About Variance: Standards, Targets, Tracking, And Other Thoughts, Dorothy Wallace
Numeracy
Variation is a natural result of any process, including education. Understanding how variation propagates and increases is necessary for designing educational interventions that work for the intended population. We show how common strategies such as setting standards and tracking can accidentally produce unintended and undesirable results due to the way variation moves through a system.

Spreadsheets Across The Curriculum, 1: The Idea And The Resource, H L Vacher, Emily Lardner
Numeracy
This paper introduces Spreadsheets Across the Curriculum, a workshop-based educational materials development project to build a resource to facilitate connecting mathematics and context in undergraduate college courses where mathematical problem solving is relevant. The central idea is “spreadsheet modules,” which, in essence, are elaborate word problems in the form of short PowerPoint presentations with embedded Excel spreadsheets. Students work through the presentations on their own, making and/or completing the spreadsheets displayed on the slides in order to perform calculations or draw graphs that address the issue (context) posed in the word problem. The end result of the project is the …
Reorganizing School Mathematics For Quantitative Literacy, Rick Gillman
Reorganizing School Mathematics For Quantitative Literacy, Rick Gillman
Numeracy
This paper offers an alternative curriculum for high school mathematics. It proposes replacing the Algebra-Geometry-Algebra rush to calculus model with one which focuses on improving student problem-solving skills and general quantitative literacy skills while reinforcing basic manipulative skills. Most of these goals are gained by expanding the current single-year algebra-one course into two years. The model proposes moving “learning to write proofs” from the traditional geometry course into a separate discrete mathematics course. It requires statistics for every student, and requires a senior-level modeling course for every college-going student. In addition, the proposed model creates opportunities for students to move …
