Innovative Ideas For A Changing Geoscience: Moving Toward A Sustainable World By Attending To Its Complexity, Tim Lutz
Earth & Space Sciences Faculty Publications
Rapidly changing environmental and social conditions require thinking outside boxes and pioneering unconventional practices. But not just any innovative line of thought or novel practice will be a positive response to the major problems of our time; some might make things worse. How can we recognize unconventionality that orients us toward being more sustainable rather than less? One approach is to attend to complexity. Conventional thinking – that which is embedded throughout culture and is generally accepted – sees complexity as a characteristic of the world (earth systems are complex; society is complex) and as a problem to be simplified, …

Climate Change Adaptation, Migration, And Promising Developments For Pacific Island States, Ashley Jonas
Climate Change Adaptation, Migration, And Promising Developments For Pacific Island States, Ashley Jonas
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
The people of the Pacific Islands face an existential crisis due to climate change, despite the fact that they are the least responsible for contributing to carbon emissions. The effects of climate change, namely sea-level rise, pose a verified threat to low-lying islands, infiltrating water supplies, crops, and infrastructure. As a result, there is a need for improved solutions for adapting to the impacts of climate change and for easier access to legal migration pathways when the consequences are insurmountable. Through comparative discourse analysis of scholarly sources, intergovernmental policies, and non-governmental organizations, the thesis finds that Small Island Developing States …
