Permian Loess And Equatorial Glaciation In Eastern Equatorial Pangea: Perspectives On The Late Paleozoic Climate System From Sedimentary Basins In Southern France, Lily Pfeifer

Sustainability Seminar Series

Carboniferous-Permian strata in basins within and proximal-to the Central Pangean Mountains (CPM) archive regional paleoequatorial climate during a unique interval in geological history (Pangean assembly, ice-age apex-and-collapse, megamonsoon inception). Whether these strata preserve a periglacial signal—or are periglacial in origin—remains debated. With a focus on upper Paleozoic (Upper Carboniferous – Permian) strata from the Lodève Basin, south-central Massif Central, France (eastern equatorial Pangea), this talk aims to address these questions through detailed sedimentology and a variety of analytical methods such as sediment geochemistry, detrital zircon geochronology, and cyclostratigraphy (time series analysis of magnetic susceptibility data). This work was supported by …

Fallacies In The Design Of Climate Change Policies: A Response To Richard Epstein, Richard L. Revesz Mar 2023

Fallacies In The Design Of Climate Change Policies: A Response To Richard Epstein, Richard L. Revesz

Texas A&M Law Review

This Essay criticizes Professor Richard Epstein’s approach to climate change regulation, which he characterizes as one involving taking modest steps at first, observing the results of these steps, and then using the lessons learned to inform the next steps. Epstein’s approach depends critically on a particular class of damage function determining how greenhouse gas emissions cause harm—specifically, damage functions that lack discontinuities. And it also depends on the ability to observe in real time how the function occurs. Neither of these conditions are met with respect to climate change. The Essay also shows that Epstein’s approach is further undermined by …

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Long-term atmospheric CO2 concentration records have suggested a reduction in the positive effect of warming on high-latitude carbon uptake since the 1990s. A variety of mechanisms have been proposed to explain the reduced net carbon sink of northern ecosystems with increased air temperature, including water stress on vegetation and increased respiration over recent decades. However, the lack of consistent long-term carbon flux and in situ soil moisture data has severely limited our ability to identify the mechanisms responsible for the recent reduced carbon sink strength. In this study, we used a record of nearly 100 site-years of eddy covariance …

The enormity and perniciousness of economic, social, and environmental sustainability challenges are evident through several avenues. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is issuing increasingly dire warnings for the future of life on Earth. Threats to social cohesion, evidenced particularly in the institutionalization of injustices and the current fragility of democracy in the United States, highlight the need for increased social cohesion. Furthermore, rising economic inequality, inequities based on gender and race, and the increasing cost of damages caused by climate events highlight economic challenges. In 2015, the United Nations put forth an agenda to address economic, social, and environmental …
