The Effect Of The Specimen–Platen Interface On Internal Cracking And Brittle Fracture Of Ice Under Compression: High-Speed Photography, E. M. Schulson, M. C. Gies, G. J. Lasonde, W. A. Nixon

Uniaxial compression experiments at –10°C at 10−3s−1 on fresh-water, granular ice have established through the use of high-speed photography that internal cracks nucleate preferentially away from the ice/platen (i/p) interface under conditions of i/p contraint, but near the interface under conditions of i/p expansion. Under conditions of little i/p interaction, cracks nucleate more or less randomly throughout the specimen. Correspondingly, the brittle-fracture strength decreases as the i/p interaction changes from compressive to tensile. These effects are explained in terms of the spatial variation of the maximum shear stress and the crack density.

ABSTRACT-Most lakes in Minnesota owe their origin directly or indirectly to glacial deposition or erosion 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. The lakes' shapes have since been modified by waves and currents near the shores and by the deposition of sediment off-shore-principally the sediment produced by growth of algae and other organisms. This sediment is a receptacle for pollen grains blown into the lake from the surrounding vegetation, and the stratigraphic succession of pollen grains records the postglacial vegetational and thus climatic history of the area. The sediment also preserves the fossils of microorganisms that reveal by their chemical composition the …

Snow and ice in high mountains represent and important water resource in many parts of the world, especially the dry continental interior of Central Asia. In the Northern Areas of Pakistan, mountain ranges are the primary sources of annually renewed water supplies. They give rise to rivers which are the only significant, sustainable source of fresh water. The Indus basin is drained by the river Indus and its major tributaries, the Kabul, Jhelum, Chanab, Ravi and Sutlej. Snowmelt contributes about 70 percent to the annual flow of these rivers, but is not timed to meet the requirements for crop production, …

A procedure is described for testing cored ice specimens under uniaxial tension. The procedure incorporates an end-capping system described by Cole and others (1985), two carpeted Synthane end caps, and extensometers mounted directly on the ice. Use of the procedure has resulted in a successful test rate of 75%

A rotary empirical orthogonal function analysis of the currents measured in central Drake Passage during DRAKE 79 shows that the deep (2500 m) flow has the same spatial and temporal structure as the flow at 500 m, suggesting that current variability in this region penetrates to the bottom. However, comparison of the time amplitude of the corresponding modes indicates that the variability of the 2500 m flow resulting from north to south shifts in the location of the Polar Front lags that at 500 m by one to three days. The Effect Of Glaciers On Streamflow Variations, Andrew G. Fountain, Wendell V. Tangborn

The effect of temperate glaciers on runoff variations is examined for the North Cascade Mountains of Washington State. The principal influences of glaciers on streamflow are often unexpected contributions to streamflow volume, a delay of the maximum seasonal flow, and a decrease in annual and monthly variation of runoff. The delay of maximum flow is caused by temporary englacial storage of spring meltwater and by peak meltwater production occurring in midsummer. The englacial storage, for one case, is 54% of the potential May runoff. An algorithm is presented that calculates the coefficient of variation of runoff for any arbitrary glacier …

The Ruby Mountains-East Humboldt Range, one of the interior mountain groups of the Basin and Range Province, lies about midway between the Wasatch Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. After Blackwelder’s description in his review of glaciation in the western mountains, Sharp mapped and named the deposits of the Lamoille and Angel Lake glaciations and correlated them with early and late Wisconsin deposits of the Great Lakes area. The refinement of relative dating (RD) methods, the availability of air photos and modem topographic maps, and new road cuts have aided the restudy of these alpine glacial deposits and the basis for …

Evidence exists for four glaciations in the Río Blanco basin west of Mendoza, Argentina. Morphology, superposition of tills, soil-profile development, loess thickness, and boulder weathering have been the techniques most useful in mapping the tills. Glaciers of Vallecitos (= Wisconsinan) age extended to 2600 m and left distinctive moraines. Tills of two preVallecitos glacier advances cover the floor of the valley from 2600 m to below 2100 m, and remnants of one of the tills extend nearly to the junction with Río Mendoza (1400 m) 13 km below the lowest Vallecitos moraines. Analysis Of Heavy Minerals In Arenaceous Lutites From The Northern Canada Basin, Arctic Ocean, Kim Zauderer

Heavy minerals from arenaceous lutites in three widely spaced cores from the northern Canada Basin were analyzed for the first time to determine the provenance of these sediments. The abundant minerals (sp. gr. == 2.70) in decreasing order for most samples were detrital carbonate, micas, clinoamphibole, clinopyroxene, garnet, epidote, tourmaline, and chlorite. The majority of pyroxene grains were etched. Sedimentary sources dominated and metamorphic and igneous sources were important but secondary. The northern Canada Arctic Archipelago and northern Greenland is proposed as the provenance for the heavy minerals in the arenaceous lutites for at least the past three million years. …

A Search For Ddt Residues In The Juneau Icefield, Alaska, Jon Edwin Barber, Russell S. Adams Jr.

The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine if DDT residues occurred in the ice of the Juneau Icefield, and 2) to devise a simple, inexpensive method of sampling glacial ice for pesticide residues. No DDT was found in the samples of ice collected strata spanning the 1963 to 1970 period. However, phthalate plasticizers were found in all samples and were assumed to be· due to contamination during collection. The elution time of the phthalate by gas chromatography was identical to that of p, p-DDT. Conversion of DDT to DDD by ultraviolet light was found to remove the phthalate. …

A stream bank along a tributary of Salt Creek in east·central Nebraska displays a sequence of sediments deposited along an eastward flowing stream during part of the approach and subsequent retreat of the last ice sheet to expand into this area during the Kansan glaciation. The section exposes a series of beds of calcareous silt which contain fossil·rich lenses. Sediment characteristics and the habitat requirements of 31 species of snails recovered suggest that the silts accumulated on an aggrading floodplain and probably were derived from erosion of unweathered cal· careous till and calcareous wind·blown silts deposited during an earlier ice …

Soil surveys in several counties in western Minnesota have revealed a soils pattern which provides geomorphic evidence for a previously unrecognized glacial lake. This glacial lake, here called Glacial Lake Benson, is about 60 miles long, 40 miles wide and of almost one million acres in area. Soils along its northern boundary are generally developed in coarse outwash. The central and southern portions of the lake basin have well-sorted silty soils, similar to those in Glacial Lake Agassiz. The elevation of the outer edge of the Benson basin is about 1,050 feet. Epeirogenic And Climatic Controls Of Early Pleistocene Fluvial Sediment Dispersal In Nebraska, K. O. Stanley, William J. Wayne

The change from Pliocene to Pleistocene fluvial sedimentation in Nebraska is denoted by gravel with relative enrichment of mechanically weak rock species and a two-fold increase in largest clast size. These changes in fluvial sediments suggest modification in degradational energy affecting detritus apparently related to deterioration of climate in the early Pleistocene. Cooler Pleistocene climates with increased moisture resulted in greater discharge and carrying capacity for streams headed in the Rocky Mountains and flowing across Nebraska. These streams carried granitic detritus eastward toward the continental glacier margin in easternmost Nebraska. There, streams flowing off ice sheets carrying sedimentary and metamorphic …

Studies of drift thickness and character currently in progress in Indiana indicate changes in drainage that have occurred in Indiana and some adjoining states since the beginning of the Pleistocene epoch. After late Tertiary (Lexington) peneplanation the master-drainage line, the Mahomet-Teays Valley system, became entrenched about 200 feet below its former level before it was ponded by Nebraskan ice and diverted into a new course. During the Parker cycle, which was interrupted by glaciation, the present physiographic features of southern Indiana and their now buried extensions to the north became recognizable. Most of the topographic features of Wabash County are of glacial origin or are glacial deposits eroded by postglacial streams. Shales, limestones, and dolomites, all Silurian, are exposed only along some of the deeper valleys. Four major rivers and six smaller streams in Wabash County flow in glacial sluiceways. Only the Eel and Wabash sluiceways carried large quantities of melt-water. The Eel River valley train occupies an interlobate position, and the Wabash Valley bears evidence of its roles as a sluiceway and as an outlet for glacial Lake Maumee in late Cary time.
