Uniaxial compression experiments at –10°C at 10−3s−1 on fresh-water, granular ice have established through the use of high-speed photography that internal cracks nucleate preferentially away from the ice/platen (i/p) interface under conditions of i/p contraint, but near the interface under conditions of i/p expansion. Under conditions of little i/p interaction, cracks nucleate more or less randomly throughout the specimen. Correspondingly, the brittle-fracture strength decreases as the i/p interaction changes from compressive to tensile. These effects are explained in terms of the spatial variation of the maximum shear stress and the crack density.

ABSTRACT-Most lakes in Minnesota owe their origin directly or indirectly to glacial deposition or erosion 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. The lakes' shapes have since been modified by waves and currents near the shores and by the deposition of sediment off-shore-principally the sediment produced by growth of algae and other organisms. This sediment is a receptacle for pollen grains blown into the lake from the surrounding vegetation, and the stratigraphic succession of pollen grains records the postglacial vegetational and thus climatic history of the area. Snow and ice in high mountains represent and important water resource in many parts of the world, especially the dry continental interior of Central Asia. In the Northern Areas of Pakistan, mountain ranges are the primary sources of annually renewed water supplies. They give rise to rivers which are the only significant, sustainable source of fresh water. The Indus basin is drained by the river Indus and its major tributaries, the Kabul, Jhelum, Chanab, Ravi and Sutlej. Snowmelt contributes about 70 percent to the annual flow of these rivers, but is not timed to meet the requirements for crop production, …
