Late Eocene To Early Oligocene Palynostratigraphy Of The Western Black Sea, Easternparatethys, Recep Hayretti̇n Sancay, Zühtü Bati
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Eastern Thrace and Western Black Sea basins provide unique perspectives on the palaeogeographic reconstructions of the Paratethys. Although very thick and extensive Oligocene outcrops and well sections exist in the Thrace Basin, only a few comparable sections are available in the Black Sea onshore areas. In this study, five measured stratigraphic sections of Eocene to Oligocene age from the margins of the Western Black Sea were studied and palynomorph assemblages were identified quantitatively. Index dinoflagellate cyst events and a palynological biozonation as established in the Mediterranean were applied successfully. Priabonian units contain the Aal biozone, whereas Rupelian successions were …

Seismic Identification Of Gas Hydrates: A Case Study From Sakarya Canyon,Western Black Sea, Aslihan Nasif, Fai̇k Erdeni̇z Özel, Derman Dondurur
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Multichannel seismic, 3.5-kHz Chirp subbottom profiler and multibeam bathymetric data were collected along the western Black Sea margin, offshore Sakarya River, to investigate the bottom-simulating reflections (BSRs), free gas accumulations, and mud volcanoes. Geometries from the seismic data indicate widespread BSRs along the continental rise between 750 and 1950 m water depths, 70 to 350 ms below the seafloor. Seismic attribute analyses have been applied to the seismic data to reveal the acoustic properties of the gas hydrates. According to the results from such analyses, we conclude that there are acoustically transparent zones beneath most of the BSRs in the …

The Cenozoic history of the Anatolian Plateau is investigated using the distribution of the last Cenozoic marine strata, the ages of Neogene continental sediments and magmatic rocks, and thermochronology. In central and northern Anatolia, the youngest marine sediments are of Middle Eocene age and show that the region has been above the sea level since ca. 41 Ma. The preservation of marine Eocene sequences over large regions and widespread distribution of Neogene continental sediments point to minor erosion or subsidence, except in the Miocene core complexes, and indicate average surface uplift or subsidence rates of less than 0.05 km/Myr since …

3d Surface Modeling Of Late Pleistocene Glaciers In The Munzur Mountains(Eastern Turkey) And Its Paleoclimatic Implications, Zeynel Çilğin
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Located in the Eastern Anatolian Region in Turkey, the Munzur Mountains (Munzurs; 3463 m above sea level) are one of the most important glacial landscapes in Turkey, with evidence for extensive glaciations in the past and small-scale glaciation at present. As Turkey's second-largest glaciated region, these mountains include various glacial landforms, primarily glacial valleys, hanging valleys, cirques, and moraines. However, only limited data are available on the extent and chronology of former glaciations in the Munzur Mountains. This study produced data on the extent of paleoglaciers, calculated their equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs), revealed paleoclimate conditions, and modeled paleo temperatures during …

Petrology, Geothermobarometry, And P-T Path Of Spinel-Bearing Symplectite Migmatitesfrom The Simin Area, Hamedan, Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone, Iran, Ali Akbar Baharifar, Donna L. Whitney, Kwan-Nang Pang, Sun-Lin Chung, Yoshiyuki Iizuka
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Migmatitic rocks in the Hamedan area, Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone, Iran, contain symplectite that has partially replaced andalusite. In metatexite, symplectite typically consists of spinel + cordierite + Ca-rich plagioclase ± orthoamphibole, but in diatexite, symplectite consists of spinel + Ca-rich plagioclase; cordierite is typically absent from symplectite although it is present in the matrix of the rock. A calculated P-T pseudosection for an average, nonmigmatitic bulk-rock composition indicates that the whole-rock composition was not the effective bulk composition during the formation of symplectite. Therefore, effective bulk compositions (EBCs) were calculated using modal abundance and the average composition of minerals in contact …

Gps-Derived Source Parameters Of The 2014 North Aegean Earthquake (Mw 6.9), Asli Doğru, Bahadir Aktuğ, Fati̇h Bulut, Haluk Özener
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
We analyzed GPS data to investigate the source parameters of the 2014 North Aegean earthquake (Mw 6.9). We simultaneously inverted strike, dip, rake, average slip, moment, size, and location of the mainshock rupture using coseismic displacements. We also investigated static stress change associated with the mainshock and its influence on aftershock activity. Previous solutions of focal mechanism showed that mainshock has a nearly pure strike-slip nature. Our results also indicate that the mainshock has a right lateral strike-slip mechanism with a substantial extensional component. Average coseismic slips are 48 cm and 25 cm on the horizontal and vertical axis, respectively. …

In the Tavşanlı Zone, the Eocene magmatism led to NW-SE trending plutons located just south of the İzmir-Ankara-Erzincan Suture Zone in Turkey. The Middle Eocene-aged Günyüzü Intrusive Complex (Karacaören, Tekören, Dinek, Kadıncık) is one of these plutonic rocks and has metaluminous to peraluminous, medium-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic and mainly I-type granite characteristics. The plutonic rocks consist of mainly granodiorite and granite, and their mafic microgranular enclaves are widespread in these rocks. Mineral assemblages in the host rocks and enclaves also are quite similar (quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, biotite, and hornblende), but the latter are more enriched in mafic minerals. The enclaves …

This study describes and interprets Upper Cretaceous volcaniclastics interbedded with hemipelagic to pelagic limestones, marls, and turbidites from the Western Pontides, northwestern Turkey. The Dereköy Formation, the Unaz Formation (red pelagic limestone unit), and the Cambu Formation can be distinguished, overlain by the turbiditic Akveren Formation. Biostratigraphic ages from the predominantly volcaniclastic Dereköy Formation indicate Turonian (Dicarinella concavata planktonic foraminifera zone, CC13/UC8-9 nannofossil zones) to middle/late Santonian ages up to CC17/UC13. The Unaz Formation, deposited during the late Santonian (UC13, Dicarinella asymetrica Zone), is overlain by the volcaniclastic Cambu Formation of latest Santonian (CC17b/UC13) to early/middle Campanian (CC20/UC15a) age. However, …

Plio-Quaternary Stress States Along The Kütahya Fault And Surroundings, Nw Turkey, Eli̇f Akgün, Süha Özden
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Kütahya Fault, which is one of the major neotectonic structures in western Anatolia, Turkey, is an active fault constraining the southern margin of the approximately E-W trending Kütahya Basin between the Eskişehir Fault to the north and the Simav Fault to the south. In the present study, inversion of both fault kinematic analysis of fault-slip data and focal mechanism solutions from the Kütahya Fault and surroundings is used to understand the Late Cenozoic stress states. The fault kinematic analysis result yielded three different stress regimes from Mio-Pliocene to Quaternary. Firstly, strike-slip faulting developed under a NE-SW trending local compressional …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Calcretes are widespread in Adana and Mersin provinces and form under different morphologies. Most calcrete profiles comprise a hard laminated crust/hardpan at the top, gradually intergrading into the nodular and/or tubular/columnar horizon with depth. This study compares the δ18O and δ13C values of calcretes from both provinces and discusses the controlling factors and environmental conditions. The δ18O and δ13C values are characteristic for the pedogenic calcretes. The Adana calcrete mean δ18O values of the hardpan, nodules and tubes, and fractures-infills are 0.69‰, 0.77‰, and 1.04‰ PDB heavier than those of the Mersin calcretes, respectively. The overall difference between the two groups …

Convergence-Aligned Foreland Magmatism In The Arabia-Anatolia Collision:Geochronological Evidence From The Karacadağ Volcanic Complex, South-East Turkey, Taner Eki̇ci̇, Colin G. Macpherson
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
New 40Ar/39Ar ages are presented for volcanic rocks from the Karacadağ Volcanic Complex (KVC) in SE Anatolia. These extend the oldest age recognised for the KVC for lavas from the Siverek Phase plateau basalt back to at least 17 Ma. Our data agree with prior studies that the second, Karacadağ Phase of igneous activity began at about 4.5 Ma with a peak between 2 and 1 Ma, but in contrast to previous work we find that this included volcanism on the Mt. Karacadağ ridge from the earliest part of this phase. Construction of the Mt. Karacadağ ridge coincided with development …

The Geochemical Signatures Of The Silurian?Devonian Succession In Easternsaudi Arabia, Mohamed Soua
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
This study was performed on 663 sandstone core and cutting samples taken from the Silurian?Devonian succession in five wells, located in eastern Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to correlate the Tawil Formation in the study wells, defining the lower Qalibah/ Tawil and upper Tawil/Jauf boundaries. The Tawil Formation is mostly characterized by clastic-dominated fluvial to marginal marine depositional environments. A chemostratigraphic correlation workflow was established using key element ratios and comprising four zones (C1 to C4) and five subzones (C2-1 to C2-3 and C3-1-C3-2). The chemostratigraphic zonation allowed robust characterization of stratigraphy in the uppermost Qalibah, Tawil, and lower Jauf …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Bolvadin Fault, which forms one of the northern boundaries of the Afyon Akşehir Graben, creeps aseismically on the surface of earth and has not generated surface-rupture earthquakes during instrumental time. Our geological mapping and palaeoseismological studies reveal that the Bolvadin Fault is an approximately 2 km wide and 16 km long, dip-slip normal fault. It could generate earthquakes up to Mw 6.48 roughly every 1 ka and the latest surface-rupture event (M > 6) occurred 494 ± 45 years ago on the Bolvadin Fault. The throw over the past 5 Ma is measured as approximately 500 m according to relative …

Structure And Kinematic Evolution Of The Southern Sivas Fold-Thrust Belt, Sivas Basin,Central Anatolia, Turkey, Michael Darin, Paul Umhoefer
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The architecture, kinematics, and timing of fold-and-thrust belt development provide essential first-order constraints on the structural evolution of continental collision zones. The southern Sivas fold-thrust belt (SSFTB) is a ~300 × 50-km-long, ENEtrending contractional belt located in the Sivas Basin at the western end of the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone, and along the İzmir- Ankara-Erzincan and Inner Tauride suture zones. We present new geologic mapping and the first detailed structural characterization and seismotectonic evidence of active deformation along the western and central segments of the SSFTB that provide new insights into the timing and kinematics of deformation associated with collision and …

Devonian strata, including siliciclastic and carbonate rocks that were deposited in shallow marine to coastal environments, are widely distributed in the eastern Taurides of southern Turkey. To document the regional formation of the Givetian (Middle Devonian)/ Frasnian (Upper Devonian) boundary, a section in the eastern Taurides was studied in high resolution with regard to biostratigraphy, microfacies, sequence stratigraphy, and the global Frasne Event. The integrated biostratigraphic investigation was based on calcareous benthic foraminifers, ostracods, conodonts, and palynomorphs, which provide a biostratigraphic frame that allows to recognize the Givetian/Frasnian boundary. On the basis of the lithological variation in the outcrop as …

Sedimentological And Mineralogical Characteristics Of Red Soil In South Pirin Mountains(Southwest Bulgaria), Rossitza Kenderova, Ahinora Baltakova, Marlena Yaneva
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The northernmost derivation of the Mediterranean climatic influence and the wide distribution of carbonate rocks are factors that could explain red soils distribution in the lands of Southern Bulgaria. However, due to the mainly mountainous landscape, red soils can be found only on certain spots in Bulgaria. One of the most typical examples of red soil can be found in the lands of Nova Lovcha Village in Bulgaria, but this area was not studied in detail due to its border position. In this study, the catena principle was used to estimate the parental material and slope drainage relationships as factors …

Graphite In Rocks Of The Popigai Impact Crater: Residual Or Retrograde?, Valentin Afanasiev, Sergey Gromilov, Valeri Sonin, Egor Zhimulev, Aleksei Chepurov
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The concentration of diamond-bearing tagamite from the Popigai impact crater produces large amounts of graphite in addition to impact diamonds (1:100, respectively). The question arises of whether this is residual graphite not converted to diamond at the time of the Popigai impact or is a retrograde form resulting from back-conversion of impact diamond to graphite in a high-temperature tagamite melt. Experiments show that graphite from tagamite is a residual phase. Coexistence of lonsdaleite, cubic diamond, and single-crystal graphite within a limited volume may be due to different orientations of the graphite base plane relative to the impact stress direction. Thus, …

Small Benthic Foraminiferal Biostratigraphy And Palaeoecology During The Campanian-Maastrichtian Transition In North-Western Tunisia, Abdellatif Bejaoui, Ezzedine Saïdi, Dalila Zaghbib-Turki
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Campanian-Maastrichtian (C-M) sediments in the Kalâat Senan area (north-western Tunisia) include rich microfauna. Small benthic foraminifera (SBF) analysis at the Wadi Necham (ON) section reveals significant biostratigraphic and palaeoecological changes during the C-M transition. A progressive evolutionary trend within the Bolivinoides lineage allowed us to establish the late Campanian B. decoratus Interval Range Zone (IRZ) and two successive zones in the early Maastrichtian, namely the B. miliaris IRZ and the B. draco Total Range Zone (TRZ), which span the standard planktonic foraminifera Gansserina gansseri IRZ. Foraminiferal semiquantitative data from the C-M transition interval at the studied section yield high values …

The Büyük Menderes Graben (BMG) of western Turkey is bounded by E-W oriented normal faults and has been a depositional center for thick sedimentary layers since the Miocene. Four Mio-Pliocene depressions (from west to east, the Çine, Bozdoğan, Karacasu, and Denizli basins) having overall N-S trends are situated just south of the BMG. In this study, we focused on the structural characteristics of the BMG using Bouguer gravity data covering the area between 37°N and 39°N and 26°30'E and 30°E and gravity data along 4 profiles to estimate the discontinuous basement relief of the BMG. Our main objectives were to …
