The Early Eocene Ekmekçi Granodiorite Porphyry In The Karacabey Region(Sakarya Zone, Nw Turkey), Gürsel Sunal, Mehmet Korhan Erturaç, Gülteki̇n Topuz, Aral Okay, Thomas Zack
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Ekmekçi granodiorite porphyry is a unit in the E-W trending, postcollisional Eocene magmatic rocks of northern Anatolia. It occurs as a relatively small stock, but represents a link between plutonic and volcanic rocks. This Early Eocene granodiorite porphyry intruded into the Upper Triassic rocks of the Karakaya complex in the Sakarya Zone. In this study we present geochemical and zircon U-Pb LA-ICP-MS age data to contribute to understanding the Early Tertiary postcollisional tectonic setting of NW Anatolia. The granodiorite porphyry includes plagioclase, quartz, hornblende, K-feldspar, biotite, and minor zircon, apatite, sphene, and opaque minerals. The stock displays medium-K calc-alkaline …

Petrological Characteristics Of The Middle Eocene Toveireh Pluton (Southwest Of Jandaq, Central Iran): Implications For The Eastern Branch Of The Neo-Tethys Subduction, Masumeh Sargazi, Ghodrat Torabi, Tomoaki Morishita
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Middle Eocene Toveireh plutonic body is located in the western margin of the Central-East Iranian Microcontinent (CEIM). This plutonic body consists of granodiorite, syenogranite, and monzogranite compositions. Granodiorite is the most predominant rock unit, which is composed of quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, hornblende, and biotite main mineral phases. The Toveireh pluton is metaluminous to weakly peraluminous (A/CNK = 0.85-1.04) and shows a calc-alkaline I-type affinity. Primitive mantle-normalized spidergrams show enrichment of large ion lithophile elements (Rb, Ba, Th, U) and light rare earth elements (REEs) (La/YbN = 6.8-8.24), as well as depletion of high-field strength elements (Nb, Ta, Ti, P). …

Petrography, Geochemistry, And Provenance Of Jurassic Sandstones From Thesakarya Zone, Nw Turkey, Firat Şengün, Osman Ersi̇n Koralay
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Jurassic sandstones exposed in the western part of the Sakarya Zone are yellowish to brown, moderate to well sorted, medium to coarse-grained, grain-supported, and cemented by calcareous and minor silica. Sandstones are mainly classified as litharenite, subarkose, and arkose according to the relative proportions of quartz, feldspar and rock fragments, and major element ratios. On the SiO2 variation diagram, Na2O and K2O show slight positive correlations, which could reflect abundance of sodic plagioclase and K-feldspar with quartz within high Si-content sandstones. Sandstones generally exhibit slight LREE enrichment with respect to HREEs. The REE plots are characteristic for sedimentary rocks …

Geology, Fluid Inclusion, And Stable Isotope (O, H, S, C) Characteristics Of The Hazinemağara (Gümüşhane) Lead-Zinc Deposit, Ne Turkey, Esra Ünal Çakir, Ahmet Gökce
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Hazinemağara (Gümüşhane) Pb-Zn deposit is located in the southern part of the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt in northeastern Turkey. It occurs as irregularly shaped ore bodies with breccia fill structure within the intraformational breccia or brecciated horizons of limestone in the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous Berdiga Formation. The dominant ore minerals are pyrite, sphalerite, galena, and tetrahedrite, and the major gangue minerals are calcite, quartz, and barite. Microthermometric investigations of the fluid inclusions show that the ore-forming fluids contain CaCl2 and MgCl2 in addition to NaCl. The salinity of the fluid ranges from 1.7% to 9.2% with an average of …

New Insights On Messinian Evaporites Based On Field And Seismic Interpretations In The Neogene Antalya Basin, Sw Turkey, Sali̇ha Dündar, Baki̇ Erdoğan Varol
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In situ/primary Messinian upper evaporite is absent in the onland (onshore) sections of the Aksu and Manavgat subbasins (Antalya Basin), where gypsum blocks, gypsum conglomerate, and laminated gypsum beds mixed with siliciclastic materials are collectively present in the uppermost Messinian-?lowermost Pliocene succession. The metric-size resedimented evaporite blocks, mainly derived from selenite-dominated marginal/upper evaporite, were deposited time-equivalent to the lower-middle parts of the reefal Gebiz limestone in the Aksu subbasin. Resedimented bedded evaporites were accumulated after siliciclastic-dominated (fluvio-deltaic) sedimentation of the Taşlık Formation in the Manavgat subbasin (nearby Antalya city). Some bedded/?resedimented gypsums were defined within the Gebiz limestone and the …

Parameter Estimations From Gravity And Magnetic Anomalies Due To Deep-Seated Faults:Differential Evolution Versus Particle Swarm Optimization, Yunus Levent Eki̇nci̇, Çağlayan Balkaya, Gökhan Göktürkler
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Estimation of causative source parameters is an essential tool in exploration geophysics and is frequently applied using potential field datasets. Naturally inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithms based on some stochastic procedures have attracted more attention during the last decade due to their capability in finding the optimal solution of the model parameters from the parameter space via direct search routines. In this study, the solutions obtained through differential evolution algorithm, a rarely used metaheuristic algorithm in geophysics, and particle swarm optimization, which is one of the most used global optimization algorithms in geophysics, have been compared in terms of robustness, consistency, …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In the southeastern part of the Jebal-E-Barez Oligocene granitoids (Kerman province, Iran), there are numerous mafic dikes and this work attempts to investigate the petrological, geochemical and mineral chemistry of these dikes. The dikes clearly follow faults which trend mainly N50-70W and N20-40W. Their thicknesses vary from 1 cm to 3 m and their contacts with the host granitic rocks are sharp without any extensive contact metamorphism which may be due to the lack of magmatic fluids. The Jebal-E-Barez mafic dikes contain plagioclase, clinopyroxene and amphibole as major minerals and overall show porphyritic texture, but intergranular, ophitic and subophitic textures …

Structural Evolution Of The Eastern Anatolian Basins: An Example From Collisional To Postcollisional Tectonic Processes, Turkey, Ali̇ Yilmaz, Hüseyi̇n Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Eastern Anatolian Basins (EABs) started to develop on a mosaic, made up of forearc deposits of the Eastern Pontide Arc (EPA), continental metamorphic rocks of the Anatolian-Iranian Platform (AIP), and obducted ophiolitic units of the North Anatolian Ophiolitic Belt (NAOB) and Southeastern Anatolian Ophiolitic Belt (SAOB). The basement rocks of the East Anatolian Region represent a continental fragment positioned between the EPA to the north and the Arabian Platform to the south. In appearance, it can be said that there are many different basins in the Eastern Anatolian Region. This paper reports on three of them that were studied …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Hamech area is located in the west of Kuh-e-Shah volcano-plutonic complex, close to the boundary between the Lut Block and Sistan Suture Zone (SSZ), and is composed of monzonite to diorite porphyries and rare gabbro that intruded into older volcanic rocks. U-Pb zircon dating indicates an age of 36.9 ± 1 Ma for gabbro (Late Eocene, Priabonian) and 38.6 ± 0.5 Ma for dacite (Late Eocene, Bartonian). Geochemically, the studied intrusions are dominantly I-type, high-K calc-alkaline, and metaluminous features. Primitive mantle-normalized trace-element spider diagrams of these rocks present enrichment in ion lithophile elements such as Cs, Rb, Ba, K, …

Miocene Sediment Mineralogy Of The Lower Chelif Basin (Nw Algeria):Implications For Weathering And Provenance, Fatiha Hadji, Abbas Marok, Ali Mokhtar-Samet
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Mineralogical investigations of clay and nonclay minerals were conducted on the Miocene sediments from three sections of the lower Chelif basin, northern Algeria. Bulk rock analyses of Miocene sediments show that these clastic sediments are dominated by variable mineralogical compositions and concentrations. Quartz is the dominant mineral through the three stratigraphic intervals and calcite (except in the upper layers) and dolomite are lacking in the Messinian deposits. The clay mineralogy is dominated by smectite (24%) and mixed-layer illite-smectite (I-S) (22%) during the Burdigalian-Langhian, illite (36%) and kaolinite (28%) in the Tortonian, and illite (49%) and I-S (20%) in the Messinian …

Relationship Between The Anisotropy Of Magnetic Susceptibility And Development Of The Haymana Anticline, Central Anatolia (Turkey), Murat Özkaptan, Erhan Gülyüz
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Integrated structural and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analyses were carried out on the Campanian- Maastrichtian shale-mudstone dominated sedimentary sequences (Haymana Formation) cropping out within the doubly plunging Haymana Anticline in Central Anatolia (Turkey). In order to understand the relationship between the development of magnetofabrics and the tectonic processes, six sites from different parts of the anticline were sampled and analyzed. AMS lineations from 634 cylindrical samples and structural data were collected in the field. The results show very high correlation with the structural trend of the region and indicate that the maximum susceptibility vector (k1) is almost parallel to …

Blue Sky At Midnight - Earthquake Lightning, Neil Whitehead, Ülkü Ulusoy
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Earthquake light, emerging from the ground as flashes at night (neglecting other more minor forms), usually has a white hemispherical center and blue outer part. The blue resembles daytime blue sky. Its existence is increasingly verified, with about 80 videos on the web to mid-2017. However, the light must be differentiated from power-grid faults, so sound/color/form/length criteria were developed in this paper through examination of many videos. Light should be coseismic (i.e. when the S-waves arrive), hemispherical, not during a storm, less than 1 s long, without fire or smoke, and without many rapid color changes. Warnings about camera artifacts …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Kangal Phyllite-Slate Formation forms the basement rocks in Kangal-Çetinkaya-Alacahan-Divriği (Sivas). These late Paleozoic phyllite-slate associations occupy a large area, possibly composed of Early Paleozoic sediments in its lower part. The lower levels (Bakırtepe Metaquartzite Member; 0-500 m) and uppermost levels comprise the Düzce Recrystallized Limestone Member (0-25 m). The lower boundary is invisible and the upper boundary is unconformably overlain by the Kıratgediği Limestone (late Jurassic- early Cretaceous). The studied brachiopod fauna, about 400 specimens, was collected from the 150-m-thick uppermost part of the greenschist sequences in the Kulluk Hill area, Elkondu village, 25 km east of Kangal. Some …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Metalliferous sedimentary rocks, despite being limited in scope, are important stratigraphic horizons within the volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the Upper Cretaceous volcanic belt of the Eastern Pontides. The metalliferous sedimentary rocks compose a distinctive genetic class. The abundance of such rocks in the Eastern Pontide district provides a basis for study and description that may be more widely applied in other VMS districts. The metalliferous sedimentary rocks generally form layers less than 1.5 m thick above stratiform massive sulfide ores. The metalliferous sediments are largely composed of quartz and hematite. While the Si ± Fe content of sediments …

Application Of Zircon Typology Method To Felsic Rocks (Cappadocia, Central Anatolia, Turkey): A Zircon Crystallization Temperature Perspective, Lütfi̇ye Akin, Erkan Aydar, Axel Karl Schmitt, Hüseyi̇n Evren Çubukçu
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Zircon typology was developed nearly half a century ago as a tool for constraining the thermochemical conditions in granitic magmas from the morphology of zircon prismatic and pyramidal crystal surfaces. Although the method precedes experimentally constrained zircon-based thermometers (zircon saturation, Ti-in-zircon), the morphology of zircon remains an important criterion for zircon studies commonly relying on visual recognition of crystals during sample purification via hand-picking. This may introduce selection bias if morphologically distinct zircon crystals are present in a population. We conducted a comparison between zircon typology and thermochemical constraints from zircon thermometry and whole rock compositions. Therefore, we focused on …

Diagenesis And Diagenetic Facies Distribution Prediction Of Chang 8 Tight Oil Reservoir In Maling Area, Ordos Basin, Nw China, Meng Wang, Shu Liu, Ming Zeng, Gang Lin, Yulin Cheng, Long Fang, Jiaming Zeng
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In this study, characteristics of Chang 8 tight sandstone pore structure and diagenesis are analyzed. A classification standard for sandstone diagenetic facies is established. Combined with the probabilistic neural network method, logging curves are used to predict the distribution of diagenetic facies. The following results are found: the Chang 8 reservoir has low porosity-low permeability characteristics, and the pore-throat structures have strong microscopic heterogeneity; both compaction and siliceous and carbonate cementation promote reservoir densification; chlorite cement lining, hydrocarbon emplacement, and the dissolution of feldspar and rock fragments have constructive effects on reservoir development; and two favorable diagenetic facies, a weakly …

Estimating The Location Of A Causative Body From A Self-Potential Anomaly Using 2d And3d Normalized Full Gradient And Euler Deconvolution, Petek Sindirgi, Şenol Özyalin
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Changes in the size and depth of sources greatly affect self-potential (SP) anomalies. Therefore, it is important to determine the location of the source accurately. In the present study, applications of the normalized full gradient (NFG) method and Euler deconvolution (EUD) were described to determine the location of the sphere-like SP body as complementary approaches to other optimization algorithms. The NFG and EUD methods were tested on synthetic, noise-free, and noisy anomalies caused by sphere-like models in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) cases. Subsequently, the methods were applied to real field data. The importance of the present study lies in …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The obliteration of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean and collision of the microplates along the northern part of Turkey led to the development of the İzmir-Ankara-Erzincan suture zone (IAESZ). After the collision of Pontides with the Central-Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC) in the Paleocene, a new phase of extension and volcanism concomitantly developed along the northern (Almus; Pontides) and southern (Yıldızeli; CACC) sides and along the IAESZ during the Middle Eocene time interval. The first products of the Middle Eocene volcanism in these areas are represented by calc-alkaline to alkaline (basic-intermediate) volcanic and volcanoclastic units together with late-stage trachytic dikes, plugs, and stocks. …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Aksu Basin in southern Turkey is dominantly represented by an alluvial fan and five fan deltas (FDs) developed along the tectonically controlled margins of the basin during the Miocene. Four alternating compressional and tensional tectonic phases have influenced the basin since its formation. Strong tectonic movements caused high sedimentation rates and progradation of large debris-flow and mass-flow dominated FDs. Here we describe two FDs (the Karadağ and Kargı FDs) in detail. The Karadağ FD began to develop under the control of a compressional regime and continued the evolution under a tensional regime. The same tensional regime caused the separation …

Triassic-Jurassic Arc Magmatism In The Pontides As Revealed By The U-Pb Detrital Zircon Ages In The Jurassic Sandstones Of Northeastern Turkey, Remzi̇ye Akdoğan, Aral I. Okay, István Dunkl
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Eastern Pontides were located at the southern active margin of Laurasia during Mesozoic time. Jurassic volcaniclastic sediments and volcanic rocks of the Pontides represent products of the arc magmatism above a north-dipping subduction zone. Despite the wide distribution of the Jurassic volcaniclastic/volcanic succession, the precise age of the Jurassic volcaniclastic sequence and that of the synsedimentary magmatism are poorly constrained. Here we present U-Pb detrital zircon ages from two Jurassic sandstones belonging to the Şenköy Formation of the Eastern Pontides. One sample is taken from the base of the Şenköy Formation unconformably overlying the late Carboniferous Gümüşhane granite. The …

The East Anatolian Fault (EAF) is a morphologically distinct and seismically active left-lateral strike-slip fault that extends for ~400 km and forms the Arabian/Anatolian plate boundary in southeastern Turkey. The EAF together with its conjugate fault, the North Anatolian Fault, help accommodate the westward escape of the Anatolian plate from the Arabian/Eurasian collision zone. Morphotectonic features along the EAF provide insights into the nature of landscape development and aid in understanding variations in tectonic activity and fault evolution. Several geomorphic indices, namely stream length-gradient index, mountain-front sinuosity, valley width to valley height ratio, basin asymmetry factor, and drainage density, and …

Cathodoluminescence, Fluid Inclusions, And Trace Element Data For The Syntaxial Quartz Cementation In The Sandstones Of The Ora Formation, Northern Iraq, Muhamed F. Omer, Henrik Friis
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Quartz cements of the quartz arenitic sandstones from the Chalky Nasara and Ora sections of the (Devonian-Carboniferous) Ora Formation in northern Iraq have been studied. A combination of hot cathodoluminescence, LA-ICP-MS, and fluid inclusion microthermometry revealed three syntaxial quartz cement generations (Q1, Q2, and Q3). The early Q1 cementation has gray to slightly brown luminescences, postdated compaction, and reduced intergranular porosity associated with illite formed during eogenesis. Q2 is characterized by dark brown luminescence overgrowths and is more voluminous in the thinly bedded sandstones than in the thickly bedded sandstones filling most of the remaining pore space during mesogenesis. Q3 …

Biostratigraphic Analysis Across The Eocene-Oligocene Boundary In The Southern Hellenic Thrace Basin (Lemnos Island, North Aegean Sea), Sofia Kostopoulou, Angelos Maravelis, Avraam Zelilidis
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The time interval of the sedimentation in the southern Hellenic Thrace Basin (Lemnos Island, northeast Aegean Sea) was studied, based on the qualitative analysis of calcareous nannoplankton and quantitative analysis of planktonic foraminifera. The samples were collected from 4 different stratigraphic sections (Ifestia, Panagia, Kaspaka, and Kaminia). The biostratigraphic analyses on both calcareous nannoplankton and planktonic foraminifera reveal an age of Late Eocene-Early Oligocene (Priabonian-Rupelian). In particular, the Eocene-Oligocene boundary is recorded at the lower part of the turbiditic system, in the Ifestia section. The present study offers the first taxonomic analysis of planktonic foraminifera of this age in the …

Geochemistry And Source Characteristics Of Dehsard Mafic Volcanic Rocks In The Southeast Of The Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone, Iran: Implications For The Evolution Of The Neo-Tethys Ocean, Mohammadali Nazemei, Mohsen Arvin, Sara Dargahi
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous Dehsard mafic volcanic rocks crop out in the southeastern Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone (SSZ), composed primarily of basalts and basaltic andesite with subordinate dolerite. They are influenced to some degree by hydrothermal alteration under zeolite-greenschist facies. Using fairly immobile trace elements, the mafic volcanic rocks show subalkaline (tholeiitic) affinities. They commonly have similar designs with somewhat strong enrichment in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and depletion in high field strength elements (HFSEs; e.g., Nb, Ta, Ti) and nearly flat heavy rare earth element (HREE) patterns. The Tavşanlı Zone (TZ) is a high-pressure/low-temperature metamorphic belt representing subduction and exhumation between the Sakarya Zone and the Afyon-Bolkardağ Zone in western Anatolia. This paper provides new and precise geological data including whole-rock and mineral chemistry, phengite 40Ar/39Ar ages, zircon laser ablation ICP-MS U-Pb, and apatite (U-Th)/He thermochronological information for a region of the Sivrihisar metamorphic complex that has been less studied than other regions of the TZ. This region comprises Permo-Carboniferous metamorphic units, Eocene granodiorite and microgranodiorite, terrestrial clastics, and Holocene alluvium. The mineral assemblage of the granite-gneiss contains quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, microcline, muscovite, and rare biotite and …
