Rheological Behaviour In Continental And Oceanic Subduction:Inferences For The Seismotectonics Of The Aegean Region, Massimiliano Maggini, Riccardo Caputo

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

We reconstructed several rheological transects across the Aegean Region, comparing the behaviour in collisional versus subducting settings. We interpolated closely spaced 1D strength envelopes, realized through a dedicated MATLAB script, for determining the shallow lithospheric distribution of brittle and ductile layers. We mainly used literature data and geodynamic considerations to fix the parameters for the rheological modelling and took particular care in reproducing reliable thermal models. The results of the mechanical-rheological model highlighted the following features and differences between the northern continental collision and the southern oceanic subduction settings: i) a slightly shallower brittle-ductile transition (BDT) in the western sectors …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This paper focuses on a paleoecological study conducted on planktonic foraminifera from upper Oligocene-lower Miocene deposits of the J-Anomaly Ridge (North Atlantic Ocean). Paleoclimatic studies are crucial to better comprehend how climatic changes occurred in the past and how they might influence global climate in the next few decades. Oceanic currents are the predominant vehicle for heat transport across the globe and therefore organisms living within the water mass can supply much information on paleoceanographic settings. In total, 53 samples from IODP Hole U1406A were selected in the core interval 96-24 CCSF-M to perform statistical analyses (R-mode cluster analysis, principal …

Nature Of Clays In Late Cretaceous Dacitic Rocks In The Eastern Sakarya Zone (Ne Turkey):A Geochemical And Isotopic Approach, Ferkan Si̇pahi̇, Mehmet Ali̇ Gücer, Münür Burhan Sadiklar

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Late Cretaceous felsic rocks are common in the eastern Pontides (NE Turkey). These rocks developed as an island arc from the Jurassic to the Miocene; they also host numerous volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. The Late Cretaceous dacites that outcrop around Zigana Mountain (Gümüşhane, NE Turkey) were exposed to intensive hydrothermal alteration. Widespread hydrothermal alteration of Late Cretaceous dacite in Zigana Mountain has led to the formation of well-developed clay minerals. Their main alteration products are sericite, chlorite, and carbonates (ankerite and calcite). The clay minerals identified by X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis include illite, chlorite, small amounts of kaolinite, …

Determination Of Deformations By Using The Psi Technique At A Common Dump Site Ofthree Different Open-Pit Marble Mines In Turkey, Fati̇h Poyraz, Yavuz Gül, Burakhan Duymaz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Slopes are formed to carry out mining activities such as stripping, ore production, transportation, and waste management in open-pit mines. The instability of slopes is a potential source of risks for mine safety. An unexpected slope failure may damage people, buildings, and equipment in the immediate area. Moreover, it leads to the disruption of mining production and an increase in production cost. For this reason, the regular examination and systematic monitoring of slopes should be performed to determine the early warning signs of failure. Thus, it may be possible to reach acceptable risk levels and to plan and implement the …

Controls On Deep-Water Slope Channel Complex Fill, Propagation, Stacking, Andorientation In The Middle Eocene-Oligocene Kırkgeçit Formation, Elazığ, Eastern Turkey, Hasan Çeli̇k, Bryan Cronin

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Deep-water channels are well-exposed along the northern margin of the east-west oriented Late Paleocene to Oligocene Elazığ Basin of eastern Turkey. The deep-water slope channel complexes are characterised by their association with prominent normal faults, where they seem to have controlled their geometries at the northern margin. The channels were fed by coarse-grained sediment shed by subaqueous gravity flows such as high and low-density turbidity currents, and both cohesive and noncohesive debris flows, from elevated hinterland across narrow shelves and through canyons and gullies into the channels. The faulting and subsequent folding along the northern basin margin created a significantly …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The rock assemblages of the Princes? Islands, which are located to the south of mainland İstanbul, are regarded as parts of the Lower Paleozoic quartz sandstones, although they were initially considered as volcanic rocks by Swan in 1868. They differ from quartz sandstones by their vesicular texture and are devoid of any stratigraphic layering. Their mineral constituents are plagioclase (30%-35%), feldspar (35%-40%), and quartz (20%-25%), corresponding to rhyolite. The crystallization age of the rhyolites is 45.66 ± 0.84 Ma on the basis of the U-Pb zircon data. They show high-K calc-alkaline affinity. On primitive-normalized spider diagrams, negative anomalies of Ba, …

Joint Modeling Of Rayleigh Wave Dispersion And H/V Spectral Ratio Using Pareto-Basedmultiobjective Particle Swarm Optimization, Ersi̇n Büyük, Ekrem Zor, Abdullah Karaman Jan 2020

Joint Modeling Of Rayleigh Wave Dispersion And H/V Spectral Ratio Using Pareto-Basedmultiobjective Particle Swarm Optimization, Ersi̇n Büyük, Ekrem Zor, Abdullah Karaman

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Estimating the shear wave velocity and thickness of geologic units in a sedimentary structure is important for quantifying the local site effect caused by an earthquake. Inversion of the Rayleigh wave dispersion alone is sensitive to the absolute average shear wave velocity, while the H/V spectral ratio is sensitive to velocity contrasts. The solution of these models in a joint system using conventional inversion techniques suffers from difficulties while evaluating partial derivatives, dependencies to the initial model that is sometimes difficult to estimate, and trapping at a local minimum. Herein, a joint model using the Pareto optimality technique with multiobjective …
