North of İstanbul, the thick Upper Cretaceous volcanic and volcanoclastic sequence of the Yemişliçay Group is nonconformably overlain by the neritic clastic and carbonate sequence of the Zekeriyaköy Formation. This unit, either placed within the volcanic sequence or interpreted to overlie it, was studied near Zekeriyaköy for its larger foraminifera, previously recurrently referred to as the Maastrichtian. The basal epiclastic sandstone beds of the Zekeriyaköy Formation immediately above the volcanic sequence contain Praesiderolites dordoniensis and rare rudist shells. The higher sandstone and limestone beds comprise assemblages of Lepidorbitoides campaniensis, Orbitoides megaloformis, Vanderbeekia catalana, Siderolites gr. calcitrapoides, Sirtina orbitoidiformis, Praestorrsella roestae, …

Late Pleistocene-Holocene Characteristics Of The North Anatolian Fault At Adapazarı Basin: Evidence From The Age And Geometry Of The Fluvial Terrace Staircases, Mehmet Korhan Erturaç

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Late Pleistocene-Holocene evolution of the Adapazarı Basin was investigated using the stratigraphy, geometry, and absoluteluminescence dating of the 4-step fluvial terrace staircases of the Sakarya River. The results revealed that the fluvial cycle was primarily related to relative sea level changes of the Black Sea. The initiation of deposition and the abandonment ages of the terraces indicated relative high stands during marine isotope stage (MIS) 5a (~84-72 ka), 3 (40-30 ka), and 1 (9 ka-recent). The erosional periods in between the terrace steps reflected the response of the Sakarya River to the significantly low stands of the sea. The …

A Holocene Paleomagnetic Record From Küçükçekmece Lagoon, Nw Turkey, Özlem Makaroğlu

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Lake sediments are very useful for providing high-resolution records of geomagnetic field variations, especially for the Holocene period. We present high-resolution paleomagnetic records from three cores (KCL12P1, P2, and P3) recovered from Küçükçekmece Lagoon, located at the northern shoreline of the Sea of Marmara, Turkey. The cores were subjected to a comprehensive paleomagnetic and rock magnetic investigation using oriented samples. According to the age-depth model, based on radiocarbon dating and X-ray fluorescence-derived Ca/Ti element ratios, tuned to available oxygen isotope records based on an absolute calendar-year time-scale, we obtained a new paleomagnetic record for the last 3800 years. Low paleointensities …

Geochemistry And Petrography Of Beach Sands Along The Western Coast Of Ghana:Implications For Provenance And Tectonic Settings, Mahamuda Abu, Emmanuel Daanoba Sunkari

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The paleoweathering, provenance, and tectonic setting of sediments of the western coast of Ghana were unraveled using the geochemistry of 29 beach sands, which are characterized by coarse-, medium-, and fine-grained sizes. The coarse-grained beach sands contain higher SiO2 content (2.9-96 wt.%) than the medium-grained (4.9-94 wt.%) and fine-grained (16.1-90.7 wt.%) sands, implying that the increase in grain size is related to the increase in SiO2 content. Al2O3 and CaO concentrations are higher in the fine- and medium-grained sands than the coarse-grained sands. The beach sands are compositionally immature based on the index of compositional variable values (1.17-141) and Th/Sc …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Oligocene Ruslar Formation, an equivalent of the Maykop Suite, is a potential hydrocarbon source rock in the western Black Sea Basin. In contrast to the offshore areas, the depositional environment and hydrocarbon source rock potential of onshore Bulgaria sediments are largely unknown. Hence, a 14-m-thick section of the Ruslar Formation, exposed near Karadere (Black Cape) along the Black Sea coast, provides an excellent opportunity to study the upper part of the Ruslar Formation. Here, laminated diatomrich mudstones with frequent thin sandstone beds and a prominent concretion horizon are exposed. Furthermore, the fossil diatom assemblages provide a key component to …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Eocene sedimentary units in the Kocaeli and Armutlu peninsulas and İznik-Geyve region (northwest Turkey) consist of marine siliciclastic and carbonate deposits, locally intercalated with volcaniclastic rocks and tuffs (Middle Eocene Magmatic Rocks-MEMR). The record of larger benthic fauna (LBF) and pelagic microfossils, such as planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton, combined with lithological description, indicate a wide spectrum of depositional environments ranging from shallowto deep-marine. These deposits contain in situ and/or allochthonous assemblages of orthophragminids, nummulitids, subordinate rotaliids, and sparse alveolinids. The in situ assemblages (mainly orthophragminids) point to several episodes of shallow marine depositional conditions during a) early Ypresian …

Alluvial-Lacustrine Sedimentation And Volcaniclastic Deposition In An Intracontinental Tectonic Graben: Paleoenvironmental Evolution Of The Neogene Sinanpaşa Basin, West-Central Turkey, Eli̇f Akiska, Baki̇ Erdoğan Varol

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

This study reports on the Sinanpaşa Basin, a typical example of the Miocene tectonic intracontinental grabens formed in West Anatolia, Turkey. The study reconstructs the paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic history of the graben based on a detailed sedimentological analysis of basin-fill deposits exposed mainly near the graben's northern and southern margins. The sedimentary paleoenvironments in the graben range from basin-margin alluvial fan systems and basin-axis fluvial distributary system to an intrabasinal shallow lake environment surrounded by peat-forming mires, changing from carbonate to more clayey, episodically evaporitic, and shifting its shorelines considerably. The spatial distribution and stratigraphic stacking of these paleoenvironments indicate …

Hyracoidea From The Middle Miocene Hominoid Locality Of Paşalar (Nw Turkey), Martin Pickford, Serdar Mayda, Berna Alpagut, Fatma Arzu Demi̇rel, Ayşegül Şarbak, Tümel Tanju Kaya

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Previously available samples of Hyracoidea from Paşalar (MN 6, Middle Miocene), Turkey, have indicated the presence of Pliohyracidae at the site, but the material was too scanty for confident identification. The single upper molar, an upper molar ectoloph fragment and an ascending ramal fragment were too uninformative for determining the taxonomic identity of the fossils, although several names have been proposed in the literature. Additional fossils collected from Paşalar include upper and lower premolars, which help to tie down the affinities of this hyracoid. They are attributed to the genus Prohyrax, but were not named specifically, even though they are …

Review Of Late Cretaceous Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide Mineralization In The Easternpontides, Ne Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Revan

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The production of Cu-Zn from volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the eastern Pontides began in the early 1900s, with the exploitation of high-grade ores scattered across the district. The district still possesses economically important blind VMS and associated sulfide deposits. Careful descriptive documentation of the typical features of these VMS ores illustrated the geological characteristics that are important in identifying ore localities and can be used to define exploration targets. The eastern Pontide VMS deposits are examples of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits that exhibit many of the characteristics typical of bimodal-felsic-type VMS mineralization. Nearly all known VMS deposits in …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Eocene-Oligocene transition corresponds to a significant biotic turnover globally. In shallow marine realms, the larger benthic foraminifera (LBF) belonging to most nummulitids and all orthophragminids became extinct at or near the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, reflecting the environmental deterioration. We here record the advanced developmental stages of midlatitude LBF from the Soğucak Carbonate Platform in NW Turkey on the brink of their extinction in the Tethys. The LBF assemblages in the uppermost part of the platform, exposed in Gökçetepe and Karaburun in the Thrace Basin and Black Sea shelf, are represented by the dominant occurrence of Heterostegina d'Orbigny, 1826, Spiroclypeus Douville, …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The sedimentary basins in SW Turkey (e.g., Kale-Tavas, Yatağan, and Ören basins) that developed after the closure of the Neotethys Ocean allow the reconstruction of the tectonic and paleogeographic history of the region. Due to the rich coal reserves, the Yatağan Basin provides a substantial amount of data to infer the paleoenvironment and paleoclimate during the middle Miocene to Pleistocene. Our work provides new paleontological and radiometric data to constrain the age, paleoclimate, and depositional environment of terrestrial deposits of this basin. We present fossil findings such as mammal bones, gastropods, and palynomorph assemblages from the base of the Turgut …

Sedimentology And Hydrocarbon Potential Of The Late Ordovician Glacial Deposits On Thearabian Platform And Southeastern Turkey, Muhi̇tti̇n Şenalp, Sema Teti̇ker

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Late Ordovician glacial deposits are widespread and constitute a significant portion of the Early Paleozoic stratigraphic sequence of the cover rocks of the Arabian and African platforms. The glaciation lasted less than one million years between the Late Ashgillian (445 Ma) and Early Silurian (444 Ma) but it had a strong impact on the whole area. It has been proven that the glaciofluvial sandstones form important oil and gas reservoirs in Saudi Arabia and in North African and other Middle Eastern countries, including SE Turkey, but their heterogeneity and internal lithofacies characteristics have not been fully understood yet. Apmdisc: An Online Computer Program For The Geochemical Discrimination Ofsiliciclastic Sediments From Active And Passive Margins, María Abdelaly Rivera-Gómez, John Selvamony Armstrong-Altrin, Surendra P. Verma, Lorena Díaz-González

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

An online computer program called APMdisc (Active and Passive Margin discrimination) for the discrimination of siliciclastic sediments from active and passive margin settings was written in Java along with the ZK framework. APMdisc calculates four complex discriminant functions (DFilr(A-P)M and DFmlr(A-P)M; DFilr(A-P)MT and DFmlr(A-P)MT), which represent linear combinations of log-ratios of all ten major elements (M) and ten major and six trace elements (MT), respectively. In these equations, ilr and mlr stand for isometric log-ratio and modified log-ratio transformations of the chemical composition of active and passive margin sediments, respectively. The ilr transformation provided the same results as the mlr …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Cerro Marcelinos (CM) and Cerro Colorado (CC) plutons are part of the Candela-Monclova intrusive belt (NE Mexico), which is mid-Eocene in age (43-35 Ma). It intrudes into the Sabinas Basin, primarily made up of limestones, of Lower and Upper Cretaceous age. Around several intrusions, including the CM and CC plutons, mineralizations are known. However, how much hidden mineralizations would occur is not known. Trends within the plutons and in contact aureoles are also poorly described at present. Therefore, we provide here in situ magnetic susceptibility (MS) and gamma ray spectrometry (GS) data along two composite transects, one in each …

The evolution of the Lycian Foreland and Aksu basins are associated with the Africa-Eurasia convergence and collision of intervening continental blocks. Both basins developed around the Beydağları, a Mesozoic carbonate platform, which constitutes the main component and western limb of the Isparta Angle.
