Aircraft contrail emission is widely believed to be a contributing factor to global climate change. We have used machine learning techniques on images containing contrails in hopes of being able to identify those which contain contrails and those that do not. The developed algorithm processes data on contrail characteristics as captured by long-term image records. Images collected by the United States Deparment of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Management user facility(ARM) were used to train a deep convolutional neural network for the purpose of this contrail classification. The neural network model was trained with 1600 images taken by the Total Sky Imager(TSI) …

Faculty Publications, Computer Science
In the graph classification problem, given is a family of graphs and a group of different categories, and we aim to classify all the graphs (of the family) into the given categories. Earlier approaches, such as graph kernels and graph embedding techniques have focused on extracting certain features by processing the entire graph. However, real world graphs are complex and noisy and these traditional approaches are computationally intensive. With the introduction of the deep learning framework, there have been numerous attempts to create more efficient classification approaches. We modify a kernel graph convolutional neural network approach, that extracts subgraphs (patches) …

Toward Efficient Automation Of Interpretable Machine Learning Boosting, Nathan Neuhaus
All Master's Theses
Developing efficient automated methods for Interpretable Machine Learning (IML) is an important and long-term goal in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Currently the Machine Learning landscape is dominated by Neural Networks (NNs) and Support Vector Machines (SVMs), models which are often highly accurate. Despite high accuracy, such models are essentially “black boxes” and therefore are too risky for situations like healthcare where real lives are at stake. In such situations, so called “glass-box” models, such as Decision Trees (DTs), Bayesian Networks (BNs), and Logic Relational (LR) models are often preferred, however can succumb to accuracy limitations. Unfortunately, having to choose …

Searching For Needles In The Cosmic Haystack, Thomas Ryan Devine
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Searching for pulsar signals in radio astronomy data sets is a difficult task. The data sets are extremely large, approaching the petabyte scale, and are growing larger as instruments become more advanced. Big Data brings with it big challenges. Processing the data to identify candidate pulsar signals is computationally expensive and must utilize parallelism to be scalable. Labeling benchmarks for supervised classification is costly. To compound the problem, pulsar signals are very rare, e.g., only 0.05% of the instances in one data set represent pulsars. Furthermore, there are many different approaches to candidate classification with no consensus on a best …

Rethinking Algorithmic Bias Through Phenomenology And Pragmatism, Johnathan C. Flowers
Rethinking Algorithmic Bias Through Phenomenology And Pragmatism, Johnathan C. Flowers
Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings
In 2017, Amazon discontinued an attempt at developing a hiring algorithm which would enable the company to streamline its hiring processes due to apparent gender discrimination. Specifically, the algorithm, trained on over a decade’s worth of resumes submitted to Amazon, learned to penalize applications that contained references to women, that indicated graduation from all women’s colleges, or otherwise indicated that an applicant was not male. Amazon’s algorithm took up the history of Amazon’s applicant pool and integrated it into its present “problematic situation,” for the purposes of future action. Consequently, Amazon declared the project a failure: even after attempting to …
Deep Learning On Graphs Using Graph Convolutional Networks, Saurabh Mithe
Deep Learning On Graphs Using Graph Convolutional Networks, Saurabh Mithe
Master's Projects
Graphs are a powerful way to model network data with the objects as nodes and the relationship between the various objects as links. Such graphs contain a plethora of valuable information about the underlying data which can be extracted, analyzed, and visualized using Machine Learning (ML). The challenge to this task is that graphs are non-Euclidean structures which means that they cannot be directly used with ML techniques because ML techniques only work with Euclidean structures like grids or sequences. In order to overcome this challenge, the graph structure first needs to be encoded into an equivalent Euclidean representation in …

Studying And Handling Iterated Algorithmic Biases In Human And Machine Learning Interaction., Wenlong Sun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Algorithmic bias consists of biased predictions born from ingesting unchecked information, such as biased samples and biased labels. Furthermore, the interaction between people and algorithms can exacerbate bias such that neither the human nor the algorithms receive unbiased data. Thus, algorithmic bias can be introduced not only before and after the machine learning process but sometimes also in the middle of the learning process. With a handful of exceptions, only a few categories of bias have been studied in Machine Learning, and there are few, if any, studies of the impact of bias on both human behavior and algorithm performance. …

Clustering Of Multiple Instance Data., Andrew D. Karem
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An emergent area of research in machine learning that aims to develop tools to analyze data where objects have multiple representations is Multiple Instance Learning (MIL). In MIL, each object is represented by a bag that includes a collection of feature vectors called instances. A bag is positive if it contains at least one positive instance, and negative if no instances are positive. One of the main objectives in MIL is to identify a region in the instance feature space with high correlation to instances from positive bags and low correlation to instances from negative bags -- this region is …

The Silencing Power Of Algorithms: How The Facebook News Feed Algorithm Manipulates Users' Perceptions Of Opinion Climates, Callie Jessica Morgan
University Honors Theses
This extended literature review investigates how the architecture and features of the Facebook Newsfeed algorithm, EdgeRank, can inhibit and facilitate the expression of political opinions. This paper will investigate how Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann's theory on public opinion, Spiral of Silence, can be used to assess the Facebook news feed as a political opinion source that actively shapes users' perceptions of minority and majority opinion climates. The feedback loops created by the algorithm's criteria influences users' decisions to self-censor or express their political opinions with interpersonal connections and unfamiliar connections on the site.
Gradient Estimation For Attractor Networks, Thomas Flynn
Gradient Estimation For Attractor Networks, Thomas Flynn
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
It has been hypothesized that neural network models with cyclic connectivity may be more powerful than their feed-forward counterparts. This thesis investigates this hypothesis in several ways. We study the gradient estimation and optimization procedures for several variants of these networks. We show how the convergence of the gradient estimation procedures are related to the properties of the networks. Then we consider how to tune the relative rates of gradient estimation and parameter adaptation to ensure successful optimization in these models. We also derive new gradient estimators for stochastic models. First, we port the forward sensitivity analysis method to the …

Many new devices, such as phones and tablets as well as traditional computer systems, rely on wireless connections to the Internet and are susceptible to attacks. Two important types of attacks are the use of malware and exploiting Internet protocol vulnerabilities in devices and network systems. These attacks form a threat on many levels and therefore any approach to dealing with these nefarious attacks will take several methods to counter. In this research, we utilize machine learning to detect and classify malware, visualize, detect and classify worms, as well as detect deauthentication attacks, a form of Denial of Service (DoS). …

Ethics And Bias In Machine Learning: A Technical Study Of What Makes Us “Good”, Ashley Nicole Shadowen
Student Theses
The topic of machine ethics is growing in recognition and energy, but bias in machine learning algorithms outpaces it to date. Bias is a complicated term with good and bad connotations in the field of algorithmic prediction making. Especially in circumstances with legal and ethical consequences, we must study the results of these machines to ensure fairness. This paper attempts to address ethics at the algorithmic level of autonomous machines. There is no one solution to solving machine bias, it depends on the context of the given system and the most reasonable way to avoid biased decisions while maintaining the …
Scalable Online Kernel Learning, Jing Lu
Scalable Online Kernel Learning, Jing Lu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
One critical deficiency of traditional online kernel learning methods is their increasing and unbounded number of support vectors (SV’s), making them inefficient and non-scalable for large-scale applications. Recent studies on budget online learning have attempted to overcome this shortcoming by bounding the number of SV’s. Despite being extensively studied, budget algorithms usually suffer from several drawbacks.
First of all, although existing algorithms attempt to bound the number of SV’s at each iteration, most of them fail to bound the number of SV’s for the final averaged classifier, which is commonly used for online-to-batch conversion. To solve this problem, we propose …

Solving Algorithmic Problems In Finitely Presented Groups Via Machine Learning, Jonathan Gryak
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Machine learning and pattern recognition techniques have been successfully applied to algorithmic problems in free groups. In this dissertation, we seek to extend these techniques to finitely presented non-free groups, in particular to polycyclic and metabelian groups that are of interest to non-commutative cryptography.
As a prototypical example, we utilize supervised learning methods to construct classifiers that can solve the conjugacy decision problem, i.e., determine whether or not a pair of elements from a specified group are conjugate. The accuracies of classifiers created using decision trees, random forests, and N-tuple neural network models are evaluated for several non-free groups. …

This paper investigates the problem of online active learning for training classification models from sequentially arriving data. This is more challenging than conventional online learning tasks since the learner not only needs to figure out how to effectively update the classifier but also needs to decide when is the best time to query the label of an incoming instance given limited label budget. The existing online active learning approaches are often based on first-order online learning methods which generally fall short in slow convergence rate and suboptimal exploitation of available information when querying the labeled data. To overcome the limitations, …

Online learning plays an important role in many big datamining problems because of its high efficiency and scalability. In theliterature, many online learning algorithms using gradient information havebeen applied to solve online classification problems. Recently, more effectivesecond-order algorithms have been proposed, where the correlation between thefeatures is utilized to improve the learning efficiency. Among them,Confidence-Weighted (CW) learning algorithms are very effective, which assumethat the classification model is drawn from a Gaussian distribution, whichenables the model to be effectively updated with the second-order informationof the data stream. Despite being studied actively, these CW algorithms cannothandle nonseparable datasets and noisy datasets very …

Sparse Feature Learning For Image Analysis In Segmentation, Classification, And Disease Diagnosis., Ehsan Hosseini-Asl
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The success of machine learning algorithms generally depends on intermediate data representation, called features that disentangle the hidden factors of variation in data. Moreover, machine learning models are required to be generalized, in order to reduce the specificity or bias toward the training dataset. Unsupervised feature learning is useful in taking advantage of large amount of unlabeled data, which is available to capture these variations. However, learned features are required to capture variational patterns in data space. In this dissertation, unsupervised feature learning with sparsity is investigated for sparse and local feature extraction with application to lung segmentation, interpretable deep …

Human activity recognition (HAR) is an emerging research topic in pattern recognition, especially in computer vision. The main objective of human activity recognition is to automatically detect and analyze human activities from the information acquired from different sensors. Human activity prediction using big data remains a challengingly open problem. Several approaches have recently been developed in order to find practical ways to solve high dimensionality of data problems. The aim of this study is to attempt, using data mining techniques, to deal with HAR modeling involving a significant number of variables in order to identify relevant parameters from data and …
