This paper presents our work for the Realtime Adhoc Task of TREC 2011 Microblog Track. Microblog texts like tweets are generally characterized by the inclusion of a large proportion of irregular expressions, such as ill-formed words, which can lead to significant mismatch between query terms and tweets. In addition, Twitter queries are distinguished from Web queries with many unique characteristics, one of which reflects the clearly distinct temporal aspects of Twitter search behavior. Most studies of online learning measure the performance of a learner by classification accuracy, which is inappropriate for applications where the data are unevenly distributed among different classes. We address this limitation by developing online learning algorithm for maximizing Area Under the ROC curve (AUC), a metric that is widely used for measuring the classification performance for imbalanced data distributions. Balanced multi-way number partitioning (BMNP) seeks to split a collection of numbers into subsets with (roughly) the same cardinality and subset sum. The problem is NP-hard, and there are several exact and approximate algorithms for it. However, existing exact algorithms solve only the simpler, balanced two-way number partitioning variant, whereas the most effective approximate algorithm, BLDM, may produce widely varying subset sums. In this paper, we introduce the LRM algorithm that lowers the expected spread in subset sums to one third that of BLDM for uniformly distributed numbers and odd subset cardinalities. Traditional image stitching using parametric transforms such as homography, only produces perceptually correct composites for planar scenes or parallax free camera motion between source frames. This limits mosaicing to source images taken from the same physical location. In this paper, we introduce a smoothly varying affine stitching field which is flexible enough to handle parallax while retaining the good extrapolation and occlusion handling properties of parametric transforms. Our algorithm which jointly estimates both the stitching field and correspondence, permits the stitching of general motion source images, provided the scenes do not contain abrupt protrusions.

This paper studies the stator currents collected from several inverter-fed laboratory induction motors and proposes a new feature based frequency domain analysis method for performing the detection of induction motor faults, such as the broken rotor-bar or bearing fault. The mathematical formulation is presented to calculate the features, which are called FFT-ICA features in this paper. The obtained FFT-ICA features are normalized by using healthy motor as benchmarks to establish a feature database for fault detection. Compare with conventional frequency-domain analysis method, no prior knowledge of the motor parameters or other measurements are required for calculating features. Only one phase …

In most kernel based online learning algorithms, when an incoming instance is misclassified, it will be added into the pool of support vectors and assigned with a weight, which often remains unchanged during the rest of the learning process. This is clearly insufficient since when a new support vector is added, we generally expect the weights of the other existing support vectors to be updated in order to reflect the influence of the added support vector. In today's world, organizations are faced with increasingly large and complex problems that require decision-making under uncertainty. Current methods for optimizing such decisions fall short of handling the problem scale and time constraints. We argue that this is due to existing methods not exploiting the inherent structure of the organizations which solve these problems. We propose a new model called the OrgPOMDP (Organizational POMDP), which is based on the partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP). Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL) aims to learn kernel machines for solving a real machine learning problem (e.g. classification) by exploring the combinations of multiple kernels. The traditional MKL approach is in general “shallow” in the sense that the target kernel is simply a linear (or convex) combination of some base kernels. Previous studies of Non-Parametric Kernel Learning (NPKL) usually formulate the learning task as a Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) problem that is often solved by some general purpose SDP solvers. However, for N data examples, the time complexity of NPKL using a standard interior-point SDP solver could be as high as O(N6.5), which prohibits NPKL methods applicable to real applications, even for data sets of moderate size. In this paper, we present a family of efficient NPKL algorithms, termed "SimpleNPKL", which can learn non-parametric kernels from a large set of pairwise constraints efficiently. The authors present an online semantics preserving, metric learning technique for improving the bag-of-words model and addressing the semantic-gap issue. This article investigates the challenge of reducing the semantic gap for building BoW models for image representation; propose a novel OSPML algorithm for enhancing BoW by minimizing the semantic loss, which is efficient and scalable for enhancing BoW models for large-scale applications; apply the proposed technique for large-scale image annotation and object recognition; and compare it to the state of the art.

Search engines are used to return a long list of hundreds or even thousands of videos in response to a query topic. Efficient navigation of videos becomes difficult and users often need to painstakingly explore the search list for a gist of the search result. This paper addresses the challenge of topical summarization by providing a timeline-based visualization of videos through matching of heterogeneous sources. We present Hoare-style axiom schemata and inference rules for verifying the partial correctness of programs in the graph programming language GP. The pre- and postconditions of this calculus are the nested conditions of Habel, Pennemann and Rensink, extended with expressions for labels in order to deal with GP’s conditional rule schemata and infinite label alphabet. We show that the proof rules are sound with respect to GP’s operational semantics.

We present a new approach for verifying programs written in GP (for Graph Programs), an experimental programming language for performing computations on graphs at a high level of abstraction. Taking a labelled graph as input, a graph program nondeterministically applies to it a number of graph transformation rules, directed by simple control constructs such as sequential composition and as-long-as-possible iteration. We adapt classical Hoare logic to the domain of graphs, and describe a system of sound proof rules for showing the partial correctness of graph programs.

This paper introduces the Deliberation Decision Support System (DDSS). The DDSS obtains heuristically (using a genetic algorithm) solutions of interest for constrained optimization models. This is illustrated, without loss of generality, by generalized assignment problems. The DDSS also provides users with graphical tools that support post-solution deliberation for constrained optimization models. The DDSS and this paper, as befits practical concerns, are focused on deliberation with respect to the constraints of the models being used.

Twitter offers an explicit mechanism to facilitate information diffusion and has emerged as a new medium for communication. Many approaches to find influentials have been proposed, but they do not consider the temporal order of information adoption. In this work, we propose a novel method to find influentials by considering both the link structure and the temporal order of information adoption in Twitter. Our method finds distinct influentials who are not discovered by other methods.

The concept of k-anonymity has received considerable attention due to the need of several organizations to release microdata without revealing the identity of individuals. Although all previous k-anonymity techniques assume the existence of a public database (PD) that can be used to breach privacy, none utilizes PD during the anonymization process. Specifically, existing generalization algorithms create anonymous tables using only the microdata table (MT) to be published, independently of the external knowledge available. Similarity measurement is a critical component in content-based image retrieval systems, and learning a good distance metric can significantly improve retrieval performance. However, despite extensive study, there are several major shortcomings with the existing approaches for distance metric learning that can significantly affect their application to medical image retrieval. We have developed a unified framework to conduct computational experiments with both learning systems: Motivated learning based on Goal Creation System, and reinforcedment learning using RL Q-Learning Algorithm. Future work includes combining motivated learning to set abstract motivations and manage goals with reinforcement learning to learn proper actions. This will allow testing of motivated learning on typical reinforcement learning benchmarks with large dimensionality of the state/action spaces.

Most machine learning tasks in data classification and information retrieval require manually labeled data examples in the training stage. The goal of active learning is to select the most informative examples for manual labeling in these learning tasks. Nearest-neighbor collaborative filtering provides a successful means of generating recommendations for web users. However, this approach suffers from several shortcomings, including data sparsity and noise, the cold-start problem, and scalability. In this work, we present a novel method for recommending items to users based on expert opinions. Our method is a variation of traditional collaborative filtering: rather than applying a nearest neighbor algorithm to the user-rating data, predictions are computed using a set of expert neighbors from an independent dataset, whose opinions are weighted according to their similarity to the user. In this paper, we investigate a novel approach of exploiting visual-duplicates for web video reranking using hypergraph. Current graph-based reranking approaches consider mainly the pair-wise linking of keyframes and ignore reliability issues that are inherent in such representation. We exploit higher order relation to overcome the issues of missing links in visual-duplicate keyframes and in addition identify the latent relationships among keyframes. Based on hypergraph, we consider two groups of video threads: visual near-duplicate threads and story threads, to hyperlink web videos and describe the higher order information existing in video content. Effective utilization of semantic concept detectors for large-scale video search has recently become a topic of intensive studies.
