Optimizing Networking Topologies With Shortest Path Algorithms, Jordan Sahs

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Communication networks tend to contain redundant devices and mediums of transmission, thus the need to locate, document, and optimize networks is increasingly becoming necessary. However, many people do not know where to start the optimization progress. What is network topology? What is this “Shortest Path Problem”, and how can it be used to better my network? These questions are presented, taught, and answered within this paper. To supplement the reader’s understanding there are thirty-eight figures in the paper that are used to help convey and compartmentalize the learning process needed to grasp the materials presented in the ending sections.

Xtreme-Noc: Extreme Gradient Boosting Based Latency Model For Network-On-Chip Architectures, Ilma Sheriff

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Multiprocessor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) integrating heterogeneous processing elements (CPU, GPU, Accelerators, memory, I/O modules ,etc.) are the de-facto design choice to meet the ever-increasing performance/Watt requirements from modern computing machines. Although at consumer level the number of processing elements (PE) are limited to 8-16, for high end servers, the number of PEs can scale up to hundreds. A Network-on-Chip (NoC) is a microscale network that facilitates the packetized communication among the PEs in such complex computational systems. Due to the heterogeneous integration of the cores, execution of diverse (serial and parallel) applications on the PEs, application mapping strategies, and many other …

Efficient Algorithms For Identifying Loop Formation And Computing Θ Value For Solving Minimum Cost Flow Network Problems, Timothy Michael Chávez, Duc Thai Nguyen Jan 2021

Efficient Algorithms For Identifying Loop Formation And Computing Θ Value For Solving Minimum Cost Flow Network Problems, Timothy Michael Chávez, Duc Thai Nguyen

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

While the minimum cost flow (MCF) problems have been well documented in many publications, due to its broad applications, little or no effort have been devoted to explaining the algorithms for identifying loop formation and computing the value needed to solve MCF network problems. This paper proposes efficient algorithms, and MATLAB computer implementation, for solving MCF problems. Several academic and real-life network problems have been solved to validate the proposed algorithms; the numerical results obtained by the developed MCF code have been compared and matched with the built-in MATLAB function Linprog() (Simplex algorithm) for further validation.

Accelerating The Information-Theoretic Approach Of Community Detection Using Distributed And Hybrid Memory Parallel Schemes, Md Abdul Motaleb Faysal May 2020

Accelerating The Information-Theoretic Approach Of Community Detection Using Distributed And Hybrid Memory Parallel Schemes, Md Abdul Motaleb Faysal

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

There are several approaches for discovering communities in a network (graph). Despite being approximating in nature, discovering communities based on the laws of Information Theory has a proven standard of accuracy. The information-theoretic algorithm known as Infomap developed a decade ago for detecting communities, did not foresee the tremendous growth of social networking, multimedia, and massive information boom. To discover communities in massive networks, we have designed a distributed-memory-parallel Infomap in the MPI framework. Our design reaches scalability of over 500 processes capable of processing networks with millions of edges while maintaining quality comparable to the sequential Infomap. We have …

Storage Management Strategy In Mobile Phones For Photo Crowdsensing, En Wang, Zhengdao Qu, Xinyao Liang, Xiangyu Meng, Yongjian Yang, Dawei Li, Weibin Meng

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In mobile crowdsensing, some users jointly finish a sensing task through the sensors equipped in their intelligent terminals. In particular, the photo crowdsensing based on Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) collects pictures for some specific targets or events and uploads them to nearby edge servers, which leads to richer data content and more efficient data storage compared with the common mobile crowdsensing; hence, it has attracted an important amount of attention recently. However, the mobile users prefer uploading the photos through Wifi APs (PoIs) rather than cellular networks. Therefore, photos stored in mobile phones are exchanged among users, in order to …

Automated Extraction Of Network Activity From Memory Resident Code, Austin Nicholas Sellers Mar 2020

Automated Extraction Of Network Activity From Memory Resident Code, Austin Nicholas Sellers

LSU Master's Theses

Advancements in malware development, including the use of file-less and memory-only payloads, have led to a significant interest in the use of volatile memory analysis by digital forensics practitioners. Memory analysis can uncover a wealth of information not available via traditional analysis, such as the discovery of injected code, hooked APIs, and more. Unfortunately, the process of analyzing such malicious code is largely left to analysts who must manually reverse engineer the code to discover its intent. This task is not only slow and error-prone, but is also generally left only to senior-level analysts to perform, given that significant reverse …

Graph Classification With Kernels, Embeddings And Convolutional Neural Networks, Monica Golahalli Seenappa, Katerina Potika, Petros Potikas

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

In the graph classification problem, given is a family of graphs and a group of different categories, and we aim to classify all the graphs (of the family) into the given categories. Earlier approaches, such as graph kernels and graph embedding techniques have focused on extracting certain features by processing the entire graph. However, real world graphs are complex and noisy and these traditional approaches are computationally intensive. With the introduction of the deep learning framework, there have been numerous attempts to create more efficient classification approaches. We modify a kernel graph convolutional neural network approach, that extracts subgraphs (patches) …

Adversarial Attack On Neural Machine Translation System, Abijith K. P. Dec 2019

Adversarial Attack On Neural Machine Translation System, Abijith K. P.

Master’s Dissertations

Nowadays Deep Neural Network based solutions are deployed to solve numerous tasks. Thus, it has become absolutely important to study the robustness of these systems. Machine Translation is one of the popular applications of Deep Neural Networks. This thesis studies the robustness of Neural Machine Translation systems by generating adversarial examples with the objective to fool the model. Whenever there is a change in the source, i.e. when a word in the input sentence is replaced by an unrelated word, the translation system is supposed to reflect the changes while doing translation. These unwanted invariance learned by the model is …

Maximizing Multifaceted Network Influence, Yuchen Li, Ju Fan, George V. Ovchinnikov, Panagiotis Karras

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An information dissemination campaign is often multifaceted, involving several facets or pieces of information disseminating from different sources. The question then arises, how should we assign such pieces to eligible sources so as to achieve the best viral dissemination results? Past research has studied the problem of Influence Maximization (IM), which is to select a set of k promoters that maximizes the expected reach of a message over a network. However, in this classical IM problem, each promoter spreads out the same unitary piece of information. In this paper, we propose the Optimal Influential Pieces Assignment (OIPA) problem, which is …

Optimal Gateway Placement In Low-Cost Smart Cities, Oluwashina Madamori

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Rapid urbanization burdens city infrastructure and creates the need for local governments to maximize the usage of resources to serve its citizens. Smart city projects aim to alleviate the urbanization problem by deploying a vast amount of Internet-of-things (IoT) devices to monitor and manage environmental conditions and infrastructure. However, smart city projects can be extremely expensive to deploy and manage partly due to the cost of providing Internet connectivity via 5G or WiFi to IoT devices. This thesis proposes the use of delay tolerant networks (DTNs) as a backbone for smart city communication; enabling developing communities to become smart cities …

Reinforcement Learning For Collective Multi-Agent Decision Making, Duc Thien Nguyen Dec 2018

Reinforcement Learning For Collective Multi-Agent Decision Making, Duc Thien Nguyen

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In this thesis, we study reinforcement learning algorithms to collectively optimize decentralized policy in a large population of autonomous agents. We notice one of the main bottlenecks in large multi-agent system is the size of the joint trajectory of agents which quickly increases with the number of participating agents. Furthermore, the noiseof actions concurrently executed by different agents in a large system makes it difficult for each agent to estimate the value of its own actions, which is well-known as the multi-agent credit assignment problem. We propose a compact representation for multi-agent systems using the aggregate counts to address …

Efficient Stochastic Gradient Hard Thresholding, Pan Zhou, Xiao-Tong Yuan, Jiashi Feng Dec 2018

Efficient Stochastic Gradient Hard Thresholding, Pan Zhou, Xiao-Tong Yuan, Jiashi Feng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stochastic gradient hard thresholding methods have recently been shown to work favorably in solving large-scale empirical risk minimization problems under sparsity or rank constraint. Despite the improved iteration complexity over full gradient methods, the gradient evaluation and hard thresholding complexity of the existing stochastic algorithms usually scales linearly with data size, which could still be expensive when data is huge and the hard thresholding step could be as expensive as singular value decomposition in rank-constrained problems. To address these deficiencies, we propose an efficient hybrid stochastic gradient hard thresholding (HSG-HT) method that can be provably shown to have sample-size-independent gradient …

Empirical Risk Landscape Analysis For Understanding Deep Neural Networks, Pan Zhou, Jiashi Feng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This work aims to provide comprehensive landscape analysis of empirical risk in deep neural networks (DNNs), including the convergence behavior of its gradient, its stationary points and the empirical risk itself to their corresponding population counterparts, which reveals how various network parameters determine the convergence performance. In particular, for an l-layer linear neural network consisting of di neurons in the i-th layer, we prove the gradient of its empirical risk uniformly converges to the one of its population risk, at the rate of O(r 2l p l √ maxi dis log(d/l)/n). Here d is the total weight dimension, s is …

Systems that process big data (e.g., high-traffic networks and large-scale storage) prefer data structures and algorithms with small memory and fast processing speed. Efficient and fast algorithms play an essential role in system design, despite the improvement of hardware. This dissertation is organized around a novel algorithm called Othello Hashing. Othello Hashing supports ultra-fast and memory-efficient key-value lookup, and it fits the requirements of the core algorithms of many large-scale systems and big data applications. Using Othello hashing, combined with domain expertise in cloud, computer networks, big data, and bioinformatics, I developed the following applications that resolve several major …

Morphogenesis And Growth Driven By Selection Of Dynamical Properties, Yuri Cantor Sep 2017

Morphogenesis And Growth Driven By Selection Of Dynamical Properties, Yuri Cantor

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Organisms are understood to be complex adaptive systems that evolved to thrive in hostile environments. Though widely studied, the phenomena of organism development and growth, and their relationship to organism dynamics is not well understood. Indeed, the large number of components, their interconnectivity, and complex system interactions all obscure our ability to see, describe, and understand the functioning of biological organisms.

Here we take a synthetic and computational approach to the problem, abstracting the organism as a cellular automaton. Such systems are discrete digital models of real-world environments, making them more accessible and easier to study then their physical world …

Ancr—An Adaptive Network Coding Routing Scheme For Wsns With Different-Success-Rate Links †, Xiang Ji, Anwen Wang, Chunyu Li, Chun Ma, Yao Peng, Dajin Wang, Qingyi Hua, Feng Chen, Dingyi Fang

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

As the underlying infrastructure of the Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been widely used in many applications. Network coding is a technique in WSNs to combine multiple channels of data in one transmission, wherever possible, to save node’s energy as well as increase the network throughput. So far most works on network coding are based on two assumptions to determine coding opportunities: (1) All the links in the network have the same transmission success rate; (2) Each link is bidirectional, and has the same transmission success rate on both ways. However, these assumptions may not be …

Packet Filter Approach To Detect Denial Of Service Attacks, Essa Yahya M Muharish Jun 2016

Packet Filter Approach To Detect Denial Of Service Attacks, Essa Yahya M Muharish

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Denial of service attacks (DoS) are a common threat to many online services. These attacks aim to overcome the availability of an online service with massive traffic from multiple sources. By spoofing legitimate users, an attacker floods a target system with a high quantity of packets or connections to crash its network resources, bandwidth, equipment, or servers. Packet filtering methods are the most known way to prevent these attacks via identifying and blocking the spoofed attack from reaching its target. In this project, the extent of the DoS attacks problem and attempts to prevent it are explored. The attacks categories …

On The Limits And Practice Of Automatically Designing Self-Stabilization, Alex Klinkhamer Jan 2016

On The Limits And Practice Of Automatically Designing Self-Stabilization, Alex Klinkhamer

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

A protocol is said to be self-stabilizing when the distributed system executing it is guaranteed to recover from any fault that does not cause permanent damage. Designing such protocols is hard since they must recover from all possible states, therefore we investigate how feasible it is to synthesize them automatically. We show that synthesizing stabilization on a fixed topology is NP-complete in the number of system states. When a solution is found, we further show that verifying its correctness on a general topology (with any number of processes) is undecidable, even for very simple unidirectional rings. Despite these negative results, …

Randomized Algorithms For Approximating A Connected Dominating Set In Wireless Sensor Networks, Akshaye Dhawan, Michelle Tanco, Aaron Yeiser Dec 2015

Randomized Algorithms For Approximating A Connected Dominating Set In Wireless Sensor Networks, Akshaye Dhawan, Michelle Tanco, Aaron Yeiser

Mathematics, Computer Science & Statistics Faculty Publications

A Connected Dominating Set (CDS) of a graph representing a Wireless Sensor Network can be used as a virtual backbone for routing through the network. Since the sensors in the network are constrained by limited battery life, we desire a minimal CDS for the network, a known NP-hard problem. In this paper we present three randomized algorithms for constructing a CDS. We evaluate our algorithms using simulations and compare them to the two-hop K2 algorithm and two other greedy algorithms from the literature. After pruning, the randomized algorithms construct a CDS that are generally equivalent in size to those constructed …

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We present a tele-immersive system that enables people to interact with each other in a virtual world using body gestures in addition to verbal communication. Beyond the obvious applications, including general online conversations and gaming, we hypothesize that our proposed system would be particularly beneficial to education by offering rich visual contents and interactivity. One distinct feature is the integration of egocentric pose recognition that allows participants to use their gestures to demonstrate and manipulate virtual objects simultaneously. This functionality enables the instructor to effectively and efficiently explain and illustrate complex concepts or sophisticated problems in an intuitive manner. The …

Video self modeling (VSM) is a behavioral intervention technique in which a learner models a target behavior by watching a video of him- or herself. In the field of speech language pathology, the approach of VSM has been successfully used for treatment of language in children with Autism and in individuals with fluency disorder of stuttering. Technical challenges remain in creating VSM contents that depict previously unseen behaviors. In this paper, we propose a novel system that synthesizes new video sequences for VSM treatment of patients with voice disorders. Starting with a video recording of a voice-disorder patient, the proposed …

Computer Science Faculty Publications

There has been a tremendous growth in multimedia applications over wireless networks. Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks(WMSNs) have become the premier choice in many research communities and industry. Many state-of-art applications, such as surveillance, traffic monitoring, and remote heath care are essentially video tracking and transmission in WMSNs. The transmission speed is constrained by the big file size of video data and fixed bandwidth allocation in constant routing paths. In this paper, we present a CamShift based algorithm to compress the tracking of videos. Then we propose a bandwidth balancing strategy in which each sensor node is able to dynamically select …

Gaussian Weighted Neighborhood Connectivity Of Nonlinear Line Attractor For Learning Complex Manifolds, Theus H. Aspiras, Vijayan K. Asari, Wesam Sakla

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The human brain has the capability to process high quantities of data quickly for detection and recognition tasks. These tasks are made simpler by the understanding of data, which intentionally removes redundancies found in higher dimensional data and maps the data onto a lower dimensional space. The brain then encodes manifolds created in these spaces, which reveal a specific state of the system. We propose to use a recurrent neural network, the nonlinear line attractor (NLA) network, for the encoding of these manifolds as specific states, which will draw untrained data towards one of the specific states that the NLA …
