Top-down saliency detection is a knowledge-driven search task. While some previous methods aim to learn this "knowledge" from category-specific data, others transfer existing annotations in a large dataset through appearance matching. In contrast, we propose in this paper a locateby-exemplar strategy. This approach is challenging, as we only use a few exemplars (up to 4) and the appearances among the query object and the exemplars can be very different. To address it, we design a two-stage deep model to learn the intra-class association between the exemplars and query objects. The first stage is for learning object-to-object association, and the second …

Learning Natural Language Inference With Lstm, Shuohang Wang, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Natural language inference (NLI) is a fundamentally important task in natural language processing that has many applications. The recently released Stanford Natural Language Inference (SNLI) corpus has made it possible to develop and evaluate learning-centered methods such as deep neural networks for natural language inference (NLI). In this paper, we propose a special long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture for NLI. Our model builds on top of a recently proposed neural attention model for NLI but is based on a significantly different idea. Instead of deriving sentence embeddings for the premise and the hypothesis to be used for classification, our solution …

Android, the modern operating system for smartphones, together with its millions of apps, has become an important part of human life. There are many challenges to analyzing them. It is important to model the mobile systems in order to analyze the behaviors of apps accurately. These apps are built on top of interactions with Android systems. We aim to automatically build abstract models of the mobile systems and thus automate the analysis of mobile applications and detect potential issues (e.g., leaking private data, causing unexpected crashes, etc.). The expected results will be the accuracy models of actual various versions of …

Disaster management in railway network is an important issue. It requires to minimize negative impact and also fast, efficient recovery from the disturbances. The main challenge here is that, the effect of inconvenience spreads out very fast in time and space. It takes noticeable amount of time to get back everything in the previous situation. This paper proposes a multi agent based algorithmic approach for disaster handling in Railway Network. This takes care of fast response to get total number of affected trains in a fast and efficient manner. We propose few algorithms to handle this situation and simulate it …

The analysis of software architecture plays an important role in understanding the system structures and facilitate proper implementation of user requirements. Despite its importance in the software engineering practice, the lack of formal description and verification support in this domain hinders the development of quality architectural models. To tackle this problem, in this work, we develop an approach for modeling and verifying software architectures specified using Monterey Phoenix (MP) architecture description language. MP is capable of modeling system and environment behaviors based on event traces, as well as supporting different architecture composition operations and views. First, we formalize the syntax …

In an urban city, its transportation network supports efficient flow of people between different parts of the city. Failures in the network can cause major disruptions to commuter and business activities which can result in both significant economic and time losses. In this paper, we investigate the use of centrality measures to determine critical nodes in a transportation network so as to improve the design of the network as well as to devise plans for coping with the network failures. Most centrality measures in social network analysis research unfortunately consider only topological structure of the network and are oblivious of …

Stopwatch: A Cloud Architecture For Timing Channel Mitigation, Peng Li, Debin Gao, Michael K Reiter
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This article presents StopWatch, a system that defends against timing-based side-channel attacks that arise from coresidency of victims and attackers in infrastructure-as-a-service clouds. StopWatch triplicates each cloud-resident guest virtual machine (VM) and places replicas so that the three replicas of a guest VM are coresident with nonoverlapping sets of (replicas of) other VMs. StopWatch uses the timing of I/O events at a VM’s replicas collectively to determine the timings observed by each one or by an external observer, so that observable timing behaviors are similarly likely in the absence of any other individual, coresident VMs. We detail the design and …

Synchronicity: Pushing The Envelope Of Fine-Grained Localization With Distributed Mimo, Jie Xiong, Kyle Jamieson, Karthikeyan Sundaresan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Indoor localization of mobile devices and tags has received much attention recently, with encouraging fine-grained localization results available with enough line-of-sight coverage and enough hardware infrastructure. Synchronicity is a location system that aims to push the envelope of highly-accurate localization systems further in both dimensions, requiring less line-of-sight and less infrastructure. With Distributed MIMO network of wireless LAN access points (APs) as a starting point, we leverage the time synchronization that such a network affords to localize with time-difference-of-arrival information at the APs. We contribute novel super-resolution signal processing algorithms and reflection path elimination schemes, yielding superior results even in …

We explore the use of a participatory sensing paradigm, where data generated from individual smartphones is used to extract and understand collective properties of temporary public gatherings and events (e.g., concerts & conferences). We focus on the use of this paradigm at a technical conference, and describe the design, implementation and deployment of ConferenceSense, an application that uses multiple sensor and human-generated inputs from attendees' smartphones to infer context, such as the start time of a session or the degree of interaction during a tea break. Based on data collected from multiple attendees at a 3-day conference, we explore how …

Software Architecture plays an essential role in the high level description of a system design. Despite its importance in the software engineering practice, the lack of formal description and verification support hinders the development of quality architectural models. In this paper, we present an automated approach to the modeling and verification of software architecture designs using the Process Analysis Toolkit (PAT). We present the formal syntax of the Wright# architecture description language together with its operational semantics in Labeled Transition System (LTS). A dedicated model checking module for Wright# is implemented in the PAT verification framework based on the proposed …
Automated Detection Of Likely Design Flaws In Layered Architectures, Aditya Budi, - Lucia, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Shaowei Wang
Automated Detection Of Likely Design Flaws In Layered Architectures, Aditya Budi, - Lucia, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, Shaowei Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Layered architecture prescribes a good principle for separating concerns to make systems more maintainable. One example of such layered architectures is the separation of classes into three groups: Boundary, Control, and Entity, which are referred to as the three analysis class stereotypes in UML. Classes of different stereotypes are interacting with one another, when properly designed, the overall interaction would be maintainable, flexible, and robust. On the other hand, poor design would result in less maintainable system that is prone to errors. In many software projects, the stereotypes of classes are often missing, thus detection of design flaws becomes non-trivial. …
Using Service Responsibility Tables To Supplement Uml In Analyzing E-Service Systems, Xin Tan, Steven Alter, Keng Siau
Using Service Responsibility Tables To Supplement Uml In Analyzing E-Service Systems, Xin Tan, Steven Alter, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper proposes using Service Responsibility Tables (SRTs) as a tool in analyzing e-service systems. First it discusses difficulties and deficiencies of using formal modeling languages such as UML in analyzing e-service systems. It proposes using SRTs as an informal language and lightweight analytical tool to be used by business professionals in analyzing e-service systems. SRTs are based on a service value chain framework but do not rely on abstract concepts and constructs, and therefore can be used by business professionals to supplement UML. We suggest a set of heuristics for transforming SRTs into two key UML diagrams, thereby illustrating …

Given its effectiveness to better understand data, ontology has been used in various domains including artificial intelligence, biomedical informatics and library science. What we have tried to promote is the use of ontology to better understand media (in particular, images) on the World Wide Web. This paper describes our preliminary attempt to construct a large-scale multi-modality ontology, called AutoMMOnto, for web image classification. Particularly, to enable the automation of text ontology construction, we take advantage of both structural and content features of Wikipedia and formalize real world objects in terms of concepts and relationships. For visual part, we train classifiers …

Dealing with changing situations is a major issue in building agent systems. When the time is limited, knowledge is unreliable, and resources are scarce, the issue becomes more challenging. The BDI (Belief-Desire-Intention) agent architecture provides a model for building agents that addresses that issue. The model can be used to build intentional agents that are able to reason based on explicit mental attitudes, while behaving reactively in changing circumstances. However, despite the reactive and deliberative features, a classical BDI agent is not capable of learning. Plans as recipes that guide the activities of the agent are assumed to be static. …

The Architecture Of Platforms: A Unified View, Carliss Y. Baldwin, C. Jason Woodard
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Product and system designers have long exploited opportunities to create families of complex artifacts by developing and recombining modular components. An especially common design pattern has come to be associated with the concept of a ‘platform’, which we define as a set of stable components that supports variety and evolvability in a system by constraining the linkages among the other components. Our goal in this chapter is to shed light on the relationships between platforms and the systems in which they are embedded, in order to better understand firms and industries where platforms play an important role. We begin by …

Interactive storytelling, emerging with virtual reality technology, has attracted a lot of research interests in recent years. In order to bridge the gap between story generation and story presentation, some hybrid narrative models are raised. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid interactive storytelling architecture S-MADE. It combines the story plot generation and character performance through goal execution and decomposition mechanism. Fuzzy Cognitive Goal Net (FCGN) is a goal modeling tool for modeling the story scenario and character behaviors. The goal decomposition algorithm enables for director agent to dispatch acts to characters easily. With this system, dynamic storylines as …

Three Architectures For Trusted Data Dissemination In Edge Computing, Shen-Tat Goh, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Edge computing pushes application logic and the underlying data to the edge of the network, with the aim of improving availability and scalability. As the edge servers are not necessarily secure, there must be provisions for users to validate the results—that values in the result tuples are not tampered with, that no qualifying data are left out, that no spurious tuples are introduced, and that a query result is not actually the output from a different query. This paper aims to address the challenges of ensuring data integrity in edge computing. We study three schemes that enable users to check …

Developing software agents has been complicated by the problem of how knowledge should be represented and used. Many researchers have identified that agents need not require the use of complex representations, but in many cases suffice to use “the world” as their representation. However, the problem of introspection, both by the agents themselves and by (human) domain experts, requires a knowledge representation with a higher level of abstraction that is more ‘understandable’. Learning and adaptation in agents has traditionally required knowledge to be represented at an arbitrary, low-level of abstraction. We seek to create an agent that has the capability …

Using Cognitive Mapping Techniques To Supplement Uml And Up In Information Requirements Determination, Keng Siau, Tan Xin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Information requirements determination is a critical task in system development projects. Many human issues may hinder the efforts to accurately capture and clearly understand users' information requirements. In this paper, we review the cognitive underpinnings of some human issues, which are discussed in existing literature and relevant to information requirements determination. We then propose the use of cognitive mapping techniques in the process of information requirements determination. Three widely used cognitive mapping techniques - causal mapping, semantic mapping, and concept mapping – are briefly introduced in this article. A case is used to illustrate how to use these cognitive mapping …

Rule Extraction: From Neural Architecture To Symbolic Representation, Gail A. Carpenter, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper shows how knowledge, in the form of fuzzy rules, can be derived from a supervised learning neural network called fuzzy ARTMAP. Rule extraction proceeds in two stages: pruning, which simplifies the network structure by removing excessive recognition categories and weights; and quantization of continuous learned weights, which allows the final system state to be translated into a usable set of descriptive rules. Three benchmark studies illustrate the rule extraction methods: (1) Pima Indian diabetes diagnosis, (2) mushroom classification and (3) DNA promoter recognition. Fuzzy ARTMAP and ART-EMAP are compared with the ADAP algorithm, the k nearest neighbor system, …

A computer-based safety training system for process operators must be able to make effective presentation of textual material, test the trainee's understanding through quizzes and facilitate plant simulation. The general framework of such a system is presented in an earlier paper (Computers in Industry, Vol. 17, 1991, pp. 349–358). In this paper, we discuss the development and implementation of a prototype Knowledge-Based Safety Training System based on the framework. The design philosophy, system architecture and the plant modelling methodology are described.
