Development Of A Real-Time Single-Lead Single-Beat Frequency-Independent Myocardial Infarction Detector, Harold Martin

The central aim of this research is the development and deployment of a novel multilayer machine learning design with unique application for the diagnosis of myocardial infarctions (MIs) from individual heartbeats of single-lead electrocardiograms (EKGs) irrespective of their sampling frequencies over a given range. To the best of our knowledge, this design is the first to attempt inter-patient myocardial infarction detection from individual heartbeats of single-lead (lead II) electrocardiograms that achieves high accuracy and near real-time diagnosis. Adversaries leverage social networks to collect sensitive data about regular users and target them with abuse that includes fake news, cyberbullying, malware distribution, and propaganda. Such behavior is more effective when performed by the social network friends of victims. In two preliminary user studies we found that 71 out of 80 participants have at least 1 Facebook friend with whom (1) they never interact, either in Facebook or in real life, or whom they believe is (2) likely to abuse their posted photos or status updates, or (3) post offensive, false or malicious content. Concurrency bugs are extremely hard to detect due to huge interleaving space. They are happening in the real world more often because of the prevalence of multi-threaded programs taking advantage of multi-core hardware, and microservice based distributed systems moving more and more applications to the cloud. As the most common non-deadlock concurrency bugs, atomicity violations are studied in many recent works, however, those methods are applicable only to single-variable atomicity violation, and don't consider the specific challenge in distributed systems that have both pessimistic and optimistic concurrency control. Modern operating systems have been designed around the hypotheses that (a) memory is both byte-addressable and volatile and (b) storage is block addressable and persistent. The arrival of new Persistent Memory (PM) technologies, has made these assumptions obsolete. Despite much of the recent work in this space, the need for consistently sharing PM data across multiple applications remains an urgent, unsolved problem. Furthermore, the availability of simple yet powerful operating system support remains elusive.

As information professionals, we know simple database searches are imperfect. With rich and expansive digital collections, patrons may not find content that is buried in a long list of results. So, how do we improve discovery of pertinent materials and offer serendipitous experience? Following the example of recommendation functionality in online applications like Netflix, we have developed a recommendation function for our digital library system that provides relevant content beyond the narrow scope of patrons' original search parameters. This session will outline the reasoning, methodology, and design of the recommendation system as well as preliminary results from implementation.

Operating Systems use fast, CPU-addressable main memory to maintain an application’s temporary data as anonymous data and to cache copies of persistent data stored in slower block-based storage devices. However, the use of this faster memory comes at a high cost. Therefore, several techniques have been implemented to use main memory more efficiently in the literature. In this dissertation we introduce three distinct approaches to improve overall system performance by optimizing main memory usage.

Server management now involves dealing with multiple dissimilar applications with varying Service-Level-Agreements (SLAs) and multiple resource dimensions.
