Large Scale Machine Learning Over Knowledge Graphs, Bedirhan Gergin
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Knowledge graphs (KGs) have become popular across various fields, providing convenient access to web-based knowledge while storing and formalizing domain-specific information. By analyzing KGs, patterns, connections, and dependencies can be identified across different data sources, enabling the inference of new knowledge from given facts. As the use of KGs expands, the size of modern KGs has grown significantly, making them impossible to process within the main memory of a single computer. Distributed computing offers a viable solution to this challenge by leveraging the combined capabilities of multiple servers within a cluster. This thesis explores how distributed computing can be effectively …

We characterize the performance of our computational pipeline for real-time gamma-ray burst (GRB) detection and localization aboard the Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope (APT) – a space-based observatory for MeV to TeV gamma-ray astronomy – and its smaller, balloon-borne prototype, the Antarctic Demonstrator for APT (ADAPT), whose scientific focus will be the detection of MeV transients. These instruments observe scintillation light from multiple Compton scattering and photoabsorption of gamma-ray photons across a series of CsI detector layers. We infer the incident angle of each photon's first scattering to localize its source direction to a Compton ring about the vector defined by its …

The Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope (APT) is a planned space-based observatory designed to localize MeV to TeV transients such as gamma-ray bursts in real time using onboard computational hardware. The Antarctic Demonstrator for APT (ADAPT) is a prototype high-altitude balloon mission scheduled to fly during the 2025–26 season. Gamma-ray-induced scintillations in CsI tiles will be captured by perpendicular arrays of optical fibers running across both tile surfaces, as well as SiPM-based edge detectors to improve light collection and calorimetry. Signal samples are captured by analog waveform digitizer ASICs then sent to the front end of the computational pipeline, which is designed …

Development Of An Algorithm To Identify And Calculate The Amount Of File Slack On An Image Of A Given Drive, Nicholas Flynn
Honors Theses
As society increasingly relies on technology, the rates of cyber crime have been increasing at exponential rates. Cyber criminals are also discovering new ways to hide evidence of their crimes. This study develops a forensic analysis algorithm to evaluate the amount of file slack on an image of a drive. Slack space, leftover drive space on a disk sector after a file has been written, can be exploited to hide data. The algorithm aims to detect and calculate this slack space to help direct forensic investigations. The algorithm was evaluated on a population dataset of 100,000 files with random data …

FPGAs are widely deployed on high-energy astrophysics telescopes to preprocess and reduce sensor data read out by front-end electronics. Across instruments, these computational pipelines have similar semantics, sharing common stages such as pedestal subtraction, signal integration, zero-suppression, island detection, and centroiding. However, diverse telescope designs require unique implementations of these algorithms, and the logic is often rewritten from scratch for a new instrument. As an alternative, High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools enable these algorithms to be implemented in a high-level language, which eases modifications and enables fast prototyping and deployment. Nonetheless, writing performant HLS code requires augmentation of the code with …

Cyberattacks are increasing in size and scope yearly, and the most effective and common means of attack is through malicious software executed on target devices of interest. Malware threats vary widely in terms of behavior and impact and, thus, effective methods of detection are constantly being sought from the academic research community to offset both volume and complexity. Rootkits are malware that represent a highly feared threat because they can change operating system integrity and alter otherwise normally functioning software. Although normal methods of detection that are based on signatures of known malware code are the standard line of defense, …

Multi-Script Handwriting Identification By Fragmenting Strokes, Joshua Jude Thomas
Multi-Script Handwriting Identification By Fragmenting Strokes, Joshua Jude Thomas
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
This study tests the effectiveness of Multi-Script Handwriting Identification after simplifying character strokes, by segmenting them into sub-parts. Character simplification is performed through splitting the character by branching-points and end-points, a process called stroke fragmentation in this study. The resulting sub-parts of the character are called stroke fragments and are evaluated individually to identify the writer. This process shares similarities with the concept of stroke decomposition in Optical Character Recognition which attempts to recognize characters through the writing strokes that make them up. The main idea of this study is that the characters of different writing‑scripts (English, Chinese, etc.) may …

Multi-axial real-time hybrid simulation (maRTHS) uses multiple hydraulic actuators to apply loads and deform experimental substructures, enacting both translational and rotational motion. This allows for an increased level of realism in seismic testing. However, this also demands the implementation of multiple-input, multiple-output control strategies with complex nonlinear behaviors. To realize true real-time hybrid simulation at the necessary sub-millisecond timescales, computational platforms will need to support these complexities at scale, while still providing deadline assurance. This paper presents initial work towards supporting (and is influenced by the need for) envisioned larger-scale future experiments based on the current maRTHS benchmark: it discusses …
A Virtual Time Driven Simulator For Devs Models, Ronald R. Stempien
A Virtual Time Driven Simulator For Devs Models, Ronald R. Stempien
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
When simulating a system that includes some software component, simulation authors are faced with the problem of how to appropriately model the software within the simulation. While many formal methods for modeling software exist, in some contexts these may not be appropriate or viable for a given simulation. Instead, simulation authors may model a computer within the simulation, and run the software in question “as is” on the modeled machine. In this work, we introduce a theoretical framework to allow for the use of hardware virtualization technologies as a hardware accelerator for CPU models in Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) …
Ensuring Non-Repudiation In Long-Distance Constrained Devices, Ethan Blum
Ensuring Non-Repudiation In Long-Distance Constrained Devices, Ethan Blum
Honors Theses
Satellite communication is essential for the exploration and study of space. Satellites allow communications with many devices and systems residing in space and on the surface of celestial bodies from ground stations on Earth. However, with the rise of Ground Station as a Service (GsaaS), the ability to efficiently send action commands to distant satellites must ensure non-repudiation such that an attacker is unable to send malicious commands to distant satellites. Distant satellites are also constrained devices and rely on limited power, meaning security on these devices is minimal. Therefore, this study attempted to propose a novel algorithm to allow …
Remote Side-Channel Disassembly On Field-Programmable Gate Arrays, Brandon R. Baggett
Remote Side-Channel Disassembly On Field-Programmable Gate Arrays, Brandon R. Baggett
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
Over the last two decades, side-channel vulnerabilities have shown to be a major threat to embedded devices. Most side-channel research has developed our understanding of the vulnerabilities to cryptographic devices due to their implementation and how we can protect them. However, side-channel leakage can yield useful information about many other processes that run on the device. One promising area that has received little attention is the side-channel leakage due to the execution of assembly instructions. There has been some work in this area that has demonstrated the idea’s potential, but so far, this research has assumed the adversary has physical …

Multi-messenger astrophysics combines observations from multiple instruments to study transient astrophysical phenomena, many occurring at seconds-level timescales. To identify and precisely localize these events in the sky, current systems often search through extensive sensor data, requiring resource-intensive computation to achieve results on the timescale of the events themselves. We seek to reduce computational requirements so as to perform real-time event localization with limited computational resources suitable for an orbital platform. This work studies the performance of a computational pipeline for real-time gamma-ray burst (GRB) detection and localization aboard the Antarctic Demonstrator for the Advanced Particle-astro-physics Telescope (ADAPT), a balloon-borne prototype …

Pavement defects such as cracks, net cracks, and pit slots can cause potential traffic safety problems. The timely detection and identification play a key role in reducing the harm of various pavement defects. Particularly, the recent development in deep learning-based CNNs has shown competitive performance in image detection and classification. To detect pavement defects automatically and improve effects, a multi-scale mobile attention-based network, which we termed MANet, is proposed to perform the detection of pavement defects. The architecture of the encoder-decoder is used in MANet, where the encoder adopts the MobileNet as the backbone network to extract pavement defect features. …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Parallel graph processing is central to analytical computer science applications, and GPUs have proven to be an ideal platform for parallel graph processing. Existing GPU graph processing frameworks present performance improvements but often neglect two issues: the unpredictability of a given input graph and the energy consumption of the graph processing. Our prototype software, EEGraph (Energy Efficiency of Graph processing), is a flexible system consisting of several graph processing algorithms with configurable parameters for vertex update synchronization, vertex activation, and memory management along with a lightweight software-based GPU energy measurement scheme. We observe relationships between different configurations of our software, …

Detecting Selfish Mining Attacks Against A Blockchain Using Machine Learing, Matthew A. Peterson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
Selfish mining is an attack against a blockchain where miners hide newly discovered blocks instead of publishing them to the rest of the network. Selfish mining has been a potential issue for blockchains since it was first discovered by Eyal and Sirer. It can be used by malicious miners to earn a disproportionate share of the mining rewards or in conjunction with other attacks to steal money from network users. Several of these attacks were launched in 2018, 2019, and 2020 with the attackers stealing as much as $18 Million. Developers made several different attempts to fix this issue, but …

Within the scope of a Wide Area Network (WAN), a large geographical communication network in which a collection of networking devices communicate data to each other, an example being the spanning communication network, known as the Internet, around continents. Within WANs exists a collection of Routers that transfer network packets to other devices. An issue pertinent to WANs is their immeasurable size and density, as we are not sure of the amount, or the scope, of all the devices that exists within the network. By tracing the routes and transits of data that traverses within the WAN, we can identify …

Analysis Of Federated Scheduling For Integer-Valued Workloads, Marion Sudvarg, Chris Gill
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
In federated scheduling of parallel real-time tasks on multiprocessor systems, high-utilization tasks are allocated dedicated processors on which they execute exclusively. Several methods exist for allocating a sufficient number of processors to guarantee that each task meets its deadline. In this paper, we propose two new strategies for allocating unit-speed cores to tasks with integer workload and deadline values. The first method can be performed in constant time for each high-utilization task, given the task's total workload, critical-path length, and deadline. The second method exploits the DAG structure of high-utilization tasks, providing a potentially better schedule in pseudo-polynomial time. We …

Rethinking The Design Of Online Professor Reputation Systems, Haley Tatum
Rethinking The Design Of Online Professor Reputation Systems, Haley Tatum
LSU Master's Theses
Online Professor Reputation (OPR) systems, such as RateMyProfessors.com (RMP), are frequently used by college students to post and access peer evaluations of their pro- fessors. However, recent evidence has shown that these platforms suffer from major bias problems. Failing to address bias in online professor ratings not only leads to negative expectations and experiences in class, but also poor performance on exams. To address these concerns, in this thesis, we study bias in OPR systems from a software design point of view. At the first phase of our analysis, we conduct a systematic literature review of 23 interdisciplinary studies on …
