Sugar: A Sequence Unfolding Based Transformer Model For Group Activity Recognition, Yash U. Gondkar

Graduate Masters Theses

Large Language Models have improved significantly in the past couple of years due to the adoption of transformers. However, transformers still find it challenging to process videos due to limited context size caused by their quadratic computing cost. Therefore, we studied a booming field in machine learning which powers applications like social scene analysis and video surveillance systems called Group Activity Recognition (GAR). We found that recent models were able to achieve more than 90% accuracy on popular datasets like the Volleyball dataset, however, it turned out that even they relied on transformers.

Therefore, in this work, we developed a …

Deep learning has profoundly transformed machine learning by offering sophisticated data representations, yet effectively incorporating structural information remains a challenge. Structural data, whether explicit or implicit, has the potential to significantly enhance the performance of deep learning tasks. This research investigates the benefits of structural information across three crucial tasks: classification, clustering, and segmentation. For explicit structural data, where inputs are directly represented as graphs, we investigate graph-level classification in brain connectivity networks. We introduce the Multi-resolution Edge Network (MENET), a novel framework designed to identify disease-specific connectomic benchmarks with high discriminatory power across diagnostic categories. MENET leverages graph-level representations …

Self-Supervised Pretraining And Transfer Learning On Fmri Data With Transformers, Sean Paulsen

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Transfer learning is a machine learning technique founded on the idea that knowledge acquired by a model during “pretraining” on a source task can be transferred to the learning of a target task. Successful transfer learning can result in improved performance, faster convergence, and reduced demand for data. This technique is particularly desirable for the task of brain decoding in the domain of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), wherein even the most modern machine learning methods can struggle to decode labelled features of brain images. This challenge is due to the highly complex underlying signal, physical and neurological differences between …

Single And Differential Morph Attack Detection, Baaria Chaudhary Jan 2021

Single And Differential Morph Attack Detection, Baaria Chaudhary

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Face recognition systems operate on the assumption that a person's face serves as the unique link to their identity. In this thesis, we explore the problem of morph attacks, which have become a viable threat to face verification scenarios precisely because of their inherent ability to break this unique link. A morph attack occurs when two people who share similar facial features morph their faces together such that the resulting face image is recognized as either of two contributing individuals. Morphs inherit enough visual features from both individuals that both humans and automatic algorithms confuse them. The contributions of this …

Learning In The Machine: To Share Or Not To Share?, Jordan Ott, Erik Linstead, Nicholas Lahaye, Pierre Baldi

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Weight-sharing is one of the pillars behind Convolutional Neural Networks and their successes. However, in physical neural systems such as the brain, weight-sharing is implausible. This discrepancy raises the fundamental question of whether weight-sharing is necessary. If so, to which degree of precision? If not, what are the alternatives? The goal of this study is to investigate these questions, primarily through simulations where the weight-sharing assumption is relaxed. Taking inspiration from neural circuitry, we explore the use of Free Convolutional Networks and neurons with variable connection patterns. Using Free Convolutional Networks, we show that while weight-sharing is a pragmatic optimization …

The preservation of the world’s oceans is crucial to human survival on this planet, yet we know too little to begin to understand anthropogenic impacts on marine life. This is especially true for coral reefs, which are the most diverse marine habitat per unit area (if not overall) as well as the most sensitive. To address this gap in knowledge, simple field devices called autonomous reef monitoring structures (ARMS) have been developed, which provide standardized samples of life from these complex ecosystems. ARMS have now become successful to the point that the amount of data collected through them has outstripped …

An Alternative Approach To Training Sequence-To-Sequence Model For Machine Translation, Vivek Sah Jan 2017

An Alternative Approach To Training Sequence-To-Sequence Model For Machine Translation, Vivek Sah

Honors Theses

Machine translation is a widely researched topic in the field of Natural Language Processing and most recently, neural network models have been shown to be very effective at this task. The model, called sequence-to-sequence model, learns to map an input sequence in one language to a vector of fixed dimensionality and then map that vector to an output sequence in another language without any human intervention provided that there is enough training data. Focusing on English-French translation, in this paper, I present a way to simplify the learning process by replacing English input sentences by word-by-word translation of those sentences. …
