Advancing The Ability To Predict Cognitive Decline And Alzheimer’S Disease Based On Genetic Variants Beyond Amyloid-Beta And Tau, Naveen Rawat
Master's Projects
A growing amount of neurodegenerative R&D is focused on identifying genomic- based explanations of AD that are beyond Amyloid-b and Tau. The proposed effort involves identifying some of the genomic variations, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), allele , chromosome, epigenetic contributors to MCI and AD that are beyond Aβ and Tau.
The project involves building a prediction model based on a support vector machine (SVM) classifier that takes into account the genomic variations and epigenetic factors to predict the early stage of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer disease (AD). To achieve this, picking up important feature sets which …
Clickbait Detection In Youtube Videos, Ruchira Gothankar
Clickbait Detection In Youtube Videos, Ruchira Gothankar
Master's Projects
YouTube videos often include captivating descriptions and intriguing thumbnails designed to increase the number of views, and thereby increase the revenue for the person who posted the video. This creates an incentive for people to post clickbait videos, in which the content might deviate significantly from the title, description, or thumbnail. In effect, users are tricked into clicking on clickbait videos. In this research, we consider the challenging problem of detecting clickbait YouTube videos. We experiment with logistic regression, random forests, and multilayer perceptrons, based on a variety of textual features. We obtain a maximum accuracy in excess of 94%.

Computer-Aided Diagnosis Of Low Grade Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma (Lgess), Xinxin Yang
Master's Projects
Low grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LGESS) is rare form of cancer, account- ing for about 0.2% of all uterine cancer cases. Approximately 75% of LGESS patients are initially misdiagnosed with leiomyoma, which is a type of benign tumor that is also known as fibroids. In this research, uterine tissue biopsy images of potential LGESS patients are preprocessed using segmentation and staining normalization algorithms. A wide variety of classic machine learning and leading deep learning models are then applied to classify tissue images as either benign or cancerous. For classic techniques, the highest classification accuracy we attain is 85%, while our …

Overlapping Community Detection In Social Networks, Akshar Panchal
Master's Projects
Social networking sites are important to connect with the world virtually. As the number of users accessing these sites increase, the data and information keeps on increasing. There are communities and groups which are formed virtually based on different factors. We can visualize these communities as networks of users or nodes and the relationships or connections between them as edges. This helps in evaluating and analyzing different factors that influence community formation in such a dense network. Community detection helps in revealing certain characteristics which makes these groups in the network unique and different from one another. We can use …

Wildfire Risk Prediction For A Smart City, Rekha Rani
Master's Projects
Wildfires are uncontrolled fires that may lead to the destruction of biodiversity, soil fertility, and human resources. There is a need for timely detection and prediction of wildfires to minimize their disastrous effects. In this research, we propose a wildfire prediction model that relies on multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) to explicitly evaluates multiple conflicting criteria in decision making and weave the wildfire risks into the city’s resiliency plan. We incorporate fuzzy set theory to handle imprecision and uncertainties. In the process, we create a new data set that includes California cities’ weather, vegetation, topography, and population density records. The model …
Image-Based Real Estate Appraisal Using Cnns And Ensemble Learning, Prathamesh Dnyanesh Kumkar
Image-Based Real Estate Appraisal Using Cnns And Ensemble Learning, Prathamesh Dnyanesh Kumkar
Master's Projects
Real Estate Appraisal is performed to evaluate properties during a range of activities like buying, selling, mortgaging, or insuring. Traditionally, this process is done by real estate brokers who consider factors like the location of a house, its area, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, along with other amenities to assess the property. This approach is quite subjective since different brokers may arrive at a different quote for the same property depending on their analysis. The development in machine learning algorithms has given rise to several Automated Valuation Models (AVMs) to estimate real estate prices. Real estate websites use such …

Findfur: A Tool For Predicting Furin Cleavage Sites Of Viral Envelope Substrates, Christine Gu
Findfur: A Tool For Predicting Furin Cleavage Sites Of Viral Envelope Substrates, Christine Gu
Master's Projects
Most biologically active proteins of eukaryotic cells are initially synthesized in the secretory pathway as inactive precursors and require proteolytic processing to become functionally active. This process is performed by a specialized family of endogenous enzymes known as proproteases convertases (PCs). Within this family of proteases, the most notorious and well-research is furin. Found ubiquitously throughout the human body, typical furin substrates are cleaved at sites composed of paired basic amino acids, specifically at the consensus sequence, R-X-[K/R]-R↓. Furin is often exploited by many pathogens, such as enveloped viruses, for proteolytic processing and maturation of their proteins. Glycoproteins of enveloped …

Visualization Of Large Networks Using Recursive Community Detection, Xinyuan Fan
Master's Projects
Networks show relationships between people or things. For instance, a person has a social network of friends, and websites are connected through a network of hyperlinks. Networks are most commonly represented as graphs, so graph drawing becomes significant for network visualization. An effective graph drawing can quickly reveal connections and patterns within a network that would be difficult to discern without visual aid. But graph drawing becomes a challenge for large networks. Am- biguous edge crossings are inevitable in large networks with numerous nodes and edges, and large graphs often become a complicated tangle of lines. These issues greatly reduce …

Clinical depression is a state of mind where the person suffers from persevering and overpowering sorrow. Existing examinations have exhibited that the course of action of arrangement in the brain of patients with clinical depression has a weird framework topology structure. In the earlier decade, resting-state images of the brain have been under the radar a. Specifically, the topological relationship of the brain aligned with graph hypothesis has discovered a strong connection in patients experiencing clinical depression. However, the systems to break down brain networks still have a couple of issues to be unwound. This paper attempts to give a …

Higher-Order Link Prediction Using Graph Embeddings, Neeraj Chavan
Master's Projects
Link prediction is an emerging field that predicts if two nodes in a network are likely to be connected or not in the near future. Networks model real-world systems using pairwise interactions of nodes. However, many of these interactions may involve more than two nodes or entities simultaneously. For example, social interactions often occur in groups of people, research collaborations are among more than two authors, and biological networks describe interactions of a group of proteins. An interaction that consists of more than two entities is called a higher-order structure. Predicting the occurrence of such higher-order structures helps us solve …

Alzheimer's is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder described by dynamic psychological and memory defalcation. It has been accounted for that the pervasiveness of Alzheimer's is to increase by 4 times in a few years, where one in every 75 people will have this disorder. Hence, there is a critical requirement for the analysis of Alzheimer's at its beginning stage to diminish the difficulty of the overall medical complications. The initial state of Alzheimer’s is called Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and hence it is a decent target for premature diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's. This project focuses on coordinating numerous imaging modalities …

The 2008 housing crisis was caused by faulty banking policies and the use of credit derivatives of mortgages for investment purposes. In this project, we look into datasets that are the markers to a typical housing crisis. Using those data sets we build three machine learning techniques which are, Linear regression, Hidden Markov Model, and Long Short-Term Memory. After building the model we did a comparative study to show the prediction done by each model. The linear regression model did not predict a housing crisis, instead, it showed that house prices would be rising steadily and the R-squared score of …

One of the alternatives to proof-of-work (PoW) consensus protocols is proof-of- stake (PoS) protocols, which address its energy and cost related issues. But they suffer from the nothing-at-stake problem; validators (PoS miners) are bound to lose nothing if they support multiple blockchain forks. Tendermint, a PoS protocol, handles this problem by forcing validators to bond their stake and then seizing a cheater’s stake when caught signing multiple competing blocks. The seized stake is then evenly distributed amongst the rest of validators. However, as the number of validators increases, the benefit in finding a cheater compared to the cost of monitoring …

Bootbandit: A Macos Bootloader Attack, Armen Boursalian, Mark Stamp
Faculty Publications, Computer Science
Historically, the boot phase on personal computers left systems in a relatively vulnerable state. Because traditional antivirus software runs within the operating system, the boot environment is difficult to protect from malware. Examples of attacks against bootloaders include so‐called “evil maid” attacks, in which an intruder physically obtains a boot disk to install malicious software for obtaining the password used to encrypt a disk. The password then must be stored and retrieved again through physical access. In this paper, we discuss an attack that borrows concepts from the evil maid. We assume exploitation can be used to infect a bootloader …

Ligands can bind at specific protein locations, inducing conformational changes such as those involving secondary structure. Identifying these possible switches from sequence, including homology, is an important ongoing area of research. We attempt to predict possible secondary structure switches from sequence in proteins using machine learning, specifically a logistic regression approach with 48 N-acetyltransferases as our learning set and 5 sirtuins as our test set. Validated residue binary assignments of 0 (no change in secondary structure) and 1 (change in secondary structure) were determined (DSSP) from 3D X-ray structures for sets of virtually identical chains crystallized under different conditions. Our …
