The Institutional Challenges Of A Quantified Self Study: An Attempt To Ascertain How Data Collected From A Mobile Device Can Be An Indicator Of Personal Mental Health Over Time, Julian Lazaras
University Honors Theses
The adoption of an application of new technology always comes with a bias, this is never more true for the case of human behavioral analytics within higher education. While movements such as the quantified self movement make strides to reinterpret the realm of data analytics, psychology, and computer science, there are inevitably limitations to the adoption and application of such approaches within the standard realm of research. Herein is presented a case where an effort to evaluate the prospect of use of mobile phone data as secondary indicators of personal mental health through the lens of data analysis was put …
Cards With Class: Formalizing A Simplified Collectible Card Game, Dan Ha
Cards With Class: Formalizing A Simplified Collectible Card Game, Dan Ha
University Honors Theses
Collectible card games (CCGs) have been a wildly popular game genre since the release of Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering. These games revolve around their thousands of cards and the hundreds of thousands of interactions they can create with their many effects. For designers, it is an incredibly demanding task to ensure that every single card works properly and that each card's text unambiguously conveys its intended behavior in all cases. The task only grows more difficult over time as the number of cards in the game grows and card effects become more complex or experimental. If the …
Case Study Of Scrum Methodology As Used By A Capstone Team, Lilly I. Yeaton
Case Study Of Scrum Methodology As Used By A Capstone Team, Lilly I. Yeaton
University Honors Theses
Scrum is widely used in the software industry to manage all kinds of projects. This case study examines the way in which a capstone team used the methodology and models the specific project management processes they used over the course of their project. These models and the process modifications therein are then compared to the team’s velocity at different points in the project. The results of this analysis suggest a correlation between asynchronous daily meetings and sprint reviews and improved velocity.
Group Theory Visualized Through The Rubik's Cube, Ashlyn Okamoto
Group Theory Visualized Through The Rubik's Cube, Ashlyn Okamoto
University Honors Theses
In my thesis, I describe the work done to implement several Group Theory concepts in the context of the Rubik’s cube. A simulation of the cube was constructed using Processing-Java and with help from a YouTube series done by TheCodingTrain. I reflect on the struggles and difficulties that came with creating this program along with the inspiration behind the project. The concepts that are currently implemented at this time are: Identity, Associativity, Order, and Inverses. The functionality of the cube is described as it moves like a regular cube but has extra keypresses that demonstrate the concepts listed. Each concept …

Post-Silicon Functional Validation With Virtual Prototypes, Kai Cong
Post-Silicon Functional Validation With Virtual Prototypes, Kai Cong
Dissertations and Theses
Post-silicon validation has become a critical stage in the system-on-chip (SoC) development cycle, driven by increasing design complexity, higher level of integration and decreasing time-to-market. According to recent reports, post-silicon validation effort comprises more than 50% of the overall development effort of an 65nm SoC. Though post-silicon validation covers many aspects ranging from electronic properties of hardware to performance and power consumption of whole systems, a central task remains validating functional correctness of both hardware and its integration with software. There are several key challenges to achieving accelerated and low-cost post-silicon functional validation. First, there is only limited silicon observability …
Novel Methods For Learning And Adaptation In Chemical Reaction Networks, Peter Banda
Novel Methods For Learning And Adaptation In Chemical Reaction Networks, Peter Banda
Dissertations and Theses
State-of-the-art biochemical systems for medical applications and chemical computing are application-specific and cannot be re-programmed or trained once fabricated. The implementation of adaptive biochemical systems that would offer flexibility through programmability and autonomous adaptation faces major challenges because of the large number of required chemical species as well as the timing-sensitive feedback loops required for learning. Currently, biochemistry lacks a systems vision on how the user-level programming interface and abstraction with a subsequent translation to chemistry should look like. By developing adaptation in chemistry, we could replace multiple hard-wired systems with a single programmable template that can be (re)trained to …
Synthesis Of Irreversible Incompletely Specified Multi-Output Functions To Reversible Eosops Circuits With Pse Gates, Robert Adrian Fiszer
Synthesis Of Irreversible Incompletely Specified Multi-Output Functions To Reversible Eosops Circuits With Pse Gates, Robert Adrian Fiszer
Dissertations and Theses
As quantum computers edge closer to viability, it becomes necessary to create logic synthesis and minimization algorithms that take into account the particular aspects of quantum computers that differentiate them from classical computers. Since quantum computers can be functionally described as reversible computers with superposition and entanglement, both advances in reversible synthesis and increased utilization of superposition and entanglement in quantum algorithms will increase the power of quantum computing.
One necessary component of any practical quantum computer is the computation of irreversible functions. However, very little work has been done on algorithms that synthesize and minimize irreversible functions into a …
Learning Two-Input Linear And Nonlinear Analog Functions With A Simple Chemical System, Peter Banda, Christof Teuscher
Learning Two-Input Linear And Nonlinear Analog Functions With A Simple Chemical System, Peter Banda, Christof Teuscher
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The current biochemical information processing systems behave in a predetermined manner because all features are defined during the design phase. To make such unconventional computing systems reusable and programmable for biomedical applications, adaptation, learning, and self-modification baaed on external stimuli would be highly desirable. However, so far, it haa been too challenging to implement these in real or simulated chemistries. In this paper we extend the chemical perceptron, a model previously proposed by the authors, to function as an analog instead of a binary system. The new analog asymmetric signal perceptron learns through feedback and supports MichaelisMenten kinetics. The results …
Equivalence Checking For High-Assurance Behavioral Synthesis, Kecheng Hao
Equivalence Checking For High-Assurance Behavioral Synthesis, Kecheng Hao
Dissertations and Theses
The rapidly increasing complexities of hardware designs are forcing design methodologies and tools to move to the Electronic System Level (ESL), a higher abstraction level with better productivity than the state-of-the-art Register Transfer Level (RTL). Behavioral synthesis, which automatically synthesizes ESL behavioral specifications to RTL implementations, plays a central role in this transition. However, since behavioral synthesis is a complex and error-prone translation process, the lack of designers' confidence in its correctness becomes a major barrier to its wide adoption. Therefore, techniques for establishing equivalence between an ESL specification and its synthesized RTL implementation are critical to bring behavioral synthesis …
Extending Technology Roadmap Through Fuzzy Cognitive Map-Based Scenarios: The Case Of The Wind Energy Sector Of Pakistan, Muhammad Amer
Extending Technology Roadmap Through Fuzzy Cognitive Map-Based Scenarios: The Case Of The Wind Energy Sector Of Pakistan, Muhammad Amer
Dissertations and Theses
In this modern era, energy is a key element required for sustainable development and prosperity of a society. Pakistan is an energy deficient country facing problems due to the shortage of over 4000 MW of electricity. The national energy sector is heavily dependent on imported fossil-fuel resources. The energy crisis is negatively affecting all economic and business activities, and it is widely recognized as a severe obstacle to growth and poverty reduction in the country. Establishment of wind farms can help to overcome the energy crisis.
In this research, a national level wind energy roadmap is developed through scenario planning. …
Just-In-Time Power Gating Of Gasp Circuits, Prachi Gulab Padwal
Just-In-Time Power Gating Of Gasp Circuits, Prachi Gulab Padwal
Dissertations and Theses
In modern integrated circuits, one way to reduce power consumption is to turn off power to parts of the circuit when those are idle. This method is called power gating. This thesis presents a state-preserving technique to achieve power savings in GasP family of asynchronous circuits by turning off the power when the circuit is idle. The power control logic turns on the power in anticipation of the receiving data. The power control logic turns off the power when the stage is idle either because it is empty or because the pipeline is clogged. The low logical effort of GasP …
Object Detection And Recognition In Natural Settings, George William Dittmar
Object Detection And Recognition In Natural Settings, George William Dittmar
Dissertations and Theses
Much research as of late has focused on biologically inspired vision models that are based on our understanding of how the visual cortex processes information. One prominent example of such a system is HMAX [17]. HMAX attempts to simulate the biological process for object recognition in cortex based on the model proposed by Hubel & Wiesel [10]. This thesis investigates the ability of an HMAX-like system (GLIMPSE [20]) to perform object-detection in cluttered natural scenes. I evaluate these results using the StreetScenes database from MIT [1, 8]. This thesis addresses three questions: (1) Can the GLIMPSE-based object detection system replicate …
Application Of Inter-Die Rank Statistics In Defect Detection, Vivek Bakshi
Application Of Inter-Die Rank Statistics In Defect Detection, Vivek Bakshi
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis presents a statistical method to identify the test escapes. Test often acquires parametric measurements as a function of logical state of a chip. The usual method of classifying chips as pass or fail is to compare each state measurement to a test limit. Subtle manufacturing defects are escaping the test limits due to process variations in deep sub-micron technologies which results in mixing of healthy and faulty parametric test measurements. This thesis identifies the chips with subtle defects by using rank order of the parametric measurements. A hypothesis is developed that a defect is likely to disturb the …

Measurement And Modeling Of Passive Surface Mount Devices On Fr4 Substrates, Rahulkumar Sadanand Koche
Dissertations and Theses
Passive components like resistors, capacitors and inductors are used in every electronic system. These are the very basic components which affect the system performance at higher frequencies and it is necessary to understand and model the behavior of these components in a very accurate manner. This work focuses on utilizing Printed Circuit Board (PCB) test boards, or fixtures, made of FR4 for characterizing Surface Mount Device (SMD) components. Agilent's Advanced Design System (ADS) microwave circuit simulation software was used for designing the microstrip transmission lines as well as for generating the layout for manufacturing of the PCB. SMD resistors, capacitors …
Evolved Design Of A Nonlinear Proportional Integral Derivative (Npid) Controller, Shubham Chopra
Evolved Design Of A Nonlinear Proportional Integral Derivative (Npid) Controller, Shubham Chopra
Dissertations and Theses
This research presents a solution to the problem of tuning a PID controller for a nonlinear system. Many systems in industrial applications use a PID controller to control a plant or the process. Conventional PID controllers work in linear systems but are less effective when the plant or the process is nonlinear because PID controllers cannot adapt the gain parameters as needed. In this research we design a Nonlinear PID (NPID) controller using a fuzzy logic system based on the Mamdani type Fuzzy Inference System to control three different DC motor systems. This fuzzy system is responsible for adapting the …
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Certain Metrics In Measuring The Quality Of End User Documentation, Ronald Morrison
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Certain Metrics In Measuring The Quality Of End User Documentation, Ronald Morrison
Dissertations and Theses
Traditional methods of evaluating quality in computer end user documentation have been subjective in nature, and have not been widely used in practice. Attempts to quantify quality and more narrowly define the essential features of quality have been limited -- leaving the issue of quality largely up to the writer of the user manual.
Quantifiable measures from the literature, especially Velotta (1992) and Brockman (1990), have been assembled into a set of uniformly weighted metrics for the measurement of document quality. This measure has been applied to the end user documentation of eighty-two personal computer packages. End user documentation is …
An Investigation Of Resolution And Addressability Requirements For Digital Display Systems Used In Word-Processing And Computer-Aided-Drafting Applications, Stephen T. Knox
Dissertations and Theses
Two hardware factors contributing to the overall image quality of digital CRTs are display resolution and addressability. The relationship between these two factors and human performance was modeled by a metric of display quality, the Resolution Addressability Ratio (RAR), and investigated within the contexts of Word-Processing (WP) and Computer-Aided-Drafting (CAD) tasks. The findings indicate a perceptual limit to MTF bandwidth improvements, and significant differences in display quality requirements between the two applications. The regression of image quality as a function of RAR metric values resulted in an r² = 0.94 for the WP task and an r² = 0.79 for …
