Providing Flexible File-Level Data Filtering For Big Data Analytics, Lei Xu, Ziling Huang, Hong Jiang, Lei Tian, David Swanson Jan 2014

Providing Flexible File-Level Data Filtering For Big Data Analytics, Lei Xu, Ziling Huang, Hong Jiang, Lei Tian, David Swanson

School of Computing: Technical Reports

The enormous amount of big data datasets impose the needs for effective data filtering technique to accelerate the analytics process. We propose a Versatile Searchable File System, VSFS, which provides a transparent, flexible and near real-time file-level data filtering service by searching files directly through the file system. Therefore, big data analytics applications can transparently utilize this filtering service without application modifications. A versatile index scheme is designed to adapt to the exploratory and ad-hoc nature of the big data analytics activities. Moreover, VSFS uses a RAM-based distributed architecture to perform file indexing. The evaluations driven by three real-world analytics …

What Information About Cardiovascular Diseases Do People Search Online?, Ashutosh Sopan Jadhav, Stephen Wu, Amit P. Sheth, Jyotishman Pathak

Kno.e.sis Publications

The objective of this study is to understand the types of health information (health topics) that users search online for Cardiovascular Diseases, by performing categorization of health search queries (from Mayoclinic.com) using UMLS MetaMap based on UMLS concepts and semantic types.

A Distributed Greedy Algorithm For Constructing Connected Dominating Sets In Wireless Sensor Networks, Akshaye Dhawan, Nicholas A. Scoville, Michelle Tanco Jan 2014

A Distributed Greedy Algorithm For Constructing Connected Dominating Sets In Wireless Sensor Networks, Akshaye Dhawan, Nicholas A. Scoville, Michelle Tanco

Mathematics, Computer Science & Statistics Faculty Publications

A Connected Dominating Set (CDS) of the graph representing a Wireless Sensor Network can be used as a virtual backbone for routing in the network. Since sensor nodes are constrained by limited on-board batteries, it is desirable to have a small CDS for the network. However, constructing a minimum size CDS has been shown to be a NP-hard problem. In this paper we present a distributed greedy algorithm for constructing a CDS that we call Greedy Connect. Our algorithm operates in two phases, first constructing a dominating set and then connecting the nodes in this set. We evaluate our algorithm …

Location Prediction Of Twitter Users Using Wikipedia, Revathy Krishnamurthy, Pavan Kapanipathi, Amit P. Sheth, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan Jan 2014

Location Prediction Of Twitter Users Using Wikipedia, Revathy Krishnamurthy, Pavan Kapanipathi, Amit P. Sheth, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

The mining of user generated content in social media has proven very effective in domains ranging from personalization and recommendation systems to crisis management. The knowledge of online users locations makes their tweets more informative and adds another dimension to their analysis. Existing approaches to predict the location of Twitter users are purely data-driven and require large training data sets of geo-tagged tweets. The collection and modelling process of tweets can be time intensive. To overcome this drawback, we propose a novel knowledge based approach that does not require any training data. Our approach uses information in Wikipedia, about cities …

Alignment And Dataset Identification Of Linked Data In Semantic Web, Kalpa Gunaratna, Sarasi Lalithsena, Amit P. Sheth Jan 2014

Alignment And Dataset Identification Of Linked Data In Semantic Web, Kalpa Gunaratna, Sarasi Lalithsena, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud has gained significant attention in the Semantic Web community over the past few years. With rapid expansion in size and diversity, it consists of over 800 interlinked datasets with over 60 billion triples. These datasets encapsulate structured data and knowledge spanning over varied domains such as entertainment, life sciences, publications, geography, and government. Applications can take advantage of this by using the knowledge distributed over the interconnected datasets, which is not realistic to find in a single place elsewhere. However, two of the key obstacles in using the LOD cloud are the limited support …

A Robust Smart Card-Based Anonymous User Authentication Protocol For Wireless Communications, Fengton Wen, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang Jan 2014

A Robust Smart Card-Based Anonymous User Authentication Protocol For Wireless Communications, Fengton Wen, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Anonymous user authentication is an important but challenging task for wireless communications. In a recent paper, Das proposed a smart cardï based anonymous user authentication protocol for wireless communications. The scheme can protect user privacy and is believed to be secure against a range of network attacks even if the secret information stored in the smart card is compromised. In this paper, we reanalyze the security of Das' scheme, and show that the scheme is in fact insecure against impersonation attacks. We then propose a new smart cardï based anonymous user authentication protocol for wireless communications. Compared with the existing …

Introduction To Parallel Computation, Clinton Mckay Jan 2014

Introduction To Parallel Computation, Clinton Mckay

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Introduction to Parallel Computing is a course designed to educate students on how to use the parallel libraries and tools provided by modern operating systems and massively parallel computer graphics hardware.

Using a series of lectures and hands-on exercises. Students will learn about parallel algorithms and concepts that will aid them in analyzing a problem and constructing a parallel solution, if possible, using the tools available to their disposal.

The course consists of lectures, projects, quizzes, and homework. The combination of these components will deliver the necessary domain knowledge to students, test them, and in the process train them to …

Peer-To-Peer Based Trading And File Distribution For Cloud Computing, Ping Yi Jan 2014

Peer-To-Peer Based Trading And File Distribution For Cloud Computing, Ping Yi

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

In this dissertation we take a peer-to-peer approach to deal with two specific issues, fair trading and file distribution, arisen from data management for cloud computing.

In mobile cloud computing environment cloud providers may collaborate with each other and essentially organize some dedicated resources as a peer to peer sharing system. One well-known problem in such peer to peer systems with exchange of resources is free riding. Providing incentives for peers to contribute to the system is an important issue in peer to peer systems. We design a reputation-based fair trading mechanism that favors peers with higher reputation. Based on …

Bandwidth Aggregation Across Multiple Smartphone Devices, Bradley R. Zeller Jan 2014

Bandwidth Aggregation Across Multiple Smartphone Devices, Bradley R. Zeller

Master's Theses

Smartphones now account for the majority of all cell phones in use today [23]. Ubiquitous Internet access is a valuable feature offered by these devices and the vast majority of smartphone applications make use of the Internet in one way or another. However, the bandwidth offered by these cellular networks is often much lower than we typically experience on our standard home networks, leading to a less-than-optimal user experience. This makes it very challenging and frustrating to access certain types of web content such as video streaming, large file downloads, loading large webpages, etc.

Given that most modern smartphones are …
