Face de-identification (De-ID) removes face identity information in face images to avoid personal privacy leakage. Existing face De-ID breaks the raw identity by cutting out the face regions and recovering the corrupted regions via deep generators, which inevitably affect the generation quality and cannot control generation results according to subsequent intelligent tasks (e.g., facial expression recognition). In this work, for the first attempt, we think the face De-ID from the perspective of attribute editing and propose an attribute-aware anonymization network (A3GAN) by formulating face De-ID as a joint task of semantic suppression and controllable attribute injection. Intuitively, the semantic suppression …
Deepcause: Verifying Neural Networks With Abstraction Refinement, Nguyen Hua Gia Phuc
Deepcause: Verifying Neural Networks With Abstraction Refinement, Nguyen Hua Gia Phuc
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Neural networks have been becoming essential parts in many safety-critical systems (such
as self-driving cars and medical diagnosis). Due to that, it is desirable that neural networks
not only have high accuracy (which traditionally can be validated using a test set) but also
satisfy some safety properties (such as robustness, fairness, or free of backdoor). To verify
neural networks against desired safety properties, there are many approaches developed
based on classical abstract interpretation. However, like in program verification, these
approaches suffer from false alarms, which may hinder the deployment of the networks.
One natural remedy to tackle the problem adopted …

While graph neural networks (GNNs) exhibit strong discriminative power, they often fall short of learning the underlying node distribution for increased robustness. To deal with this, inspired by generative adversarial networks (GANs), we investigate the problem of adversarial learning on graph neural networks, and propose a novel framework named NAGNN (i.e., Neighbor-anchoring Adversarial Graph Neural Networks) for graph representation learning, which trains not only a discriminator but also a generator that compete with each other. In particular, we propose a novel neighbor-anchoring strategy, where the generator produces samples with explicit features and neighborhood structures anchored on a reference real node, …

Guided Attention Multimodal Multitask Financial Forecasting With Inter-Company Relationships And Global And Local News, Meng Kiat Gary Ang, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Most works on financial forecasting use information directly associated with individual companies (e.g., stock prices, news on the company) to predict stock returns for trading. We refer to such company-specific information as local information. Stock returns may also be influenced by global information (e.g., news on the economy in general), and inter-company relationships. Capturing such diverse information is challenging due to the low signal-to-noise ratios, different time-scales, sparsity and distributions of global and local information from different modalities. In this paper, we propose a model that captures both global and local multimodal information for investment and risk management-related forecasting tasks. …

Learning Semantically Rich Network-Based Multi-Modal Mobile User Interface Embeddings, Meng Kiat Gary Ang, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Semantically rich information from multiple modalities - text, code, images, categorical and numerical data - co-exist in the user interface (UI) design of mobile applications. Moreover, each UI design is composed of inter-linked UI entities which support different functions of an application, e.g., a UI screen comprising a UI taskbar, a menu and multiple button elements. Existing UI representation learning methods unfortunately are not designed to capture multi-modal and linkage structure between UI entities. To support effective search and recommendation applications over mobile UIs, we need UI representations that integrate latent semantics present in both multi-modal information and linkages between …

Conversational systems have recently attracted significant attention. Both the research community and industry believe that it will exert huge impact on human-computer interaction, and specifically, the IR/RecSys community has begun to explore Conversational Recommendation. In real-life scenarios, such systems are often urgently needed in helping users accomplishing different tasks under various situations. However, existing works still face several shortcomings: (1) Most efforts are largely confined in single task setting. They fall short of hands in handling tasks across domains. (2) Aside from soliciting user preference from dialogue history, a conversational recommender naturally has access to the back-end data structure which …

On Size-Oriented Long-Tailed Graph Classification Of Graph Neural Networks, Zemin Liu, Qiheng Mao, Chenghao Liu, Yuan Fang, Jianling Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The prevalence of graph structures attracts a surge of investigation on graph data, enabling several downstream tasks such as multigraph classification. However, in the multi-graph setting, graphs usually follow a long-tailed distribution in terms of their sizes, i.e., the number of nodes. In particular, a large fraction of tail graphs usually have small sizes. Though recent graph neural networks (GNNs) can learn powerful graph-level representations, they treat the graphs uniformly and marginalize the tail graphs which suffer from the lack of distinguishable structures, resulting in inferior performance on tail graphs. To alleviate this concern, in this paper we propose a …

Motivation: Graphs or networks are widely utilized to model the interactions between different entities (e.g., proteins, drugs, etc) for biomedical applications. Predicting potential links in biomedical networks is important for understanding the pathological mechanisms of various complex human diseases, as well as screening compound targets for drug discovery. Graph neural networks (GNNs) have been designed for link prediction in various biomedical networks, which rely on the node features extracted from different data sources, e.g., sequence, structure and network data. However, it is challenging to effectively integrate these data sources and automatically extract features for different link prediction tasks. Results: In …

Resil: Revivifying Function Signature Inference Using Deep Learning With Domain-Specific Knowledge, Yan Lin, Debin Gao, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Function signature recovery is important for binary analysis and security enhancement, such as bug finding and control-flow integrity enforcement. However, binary executables typically have crucial information vital for function signature recovery stripped off during compilation. To make things worse, recent studies show that many compiler optimization strategies further complicate the recovery of function signatures with intended violations to function calling conventions. In this paper, we first perform a systematic study to quantify the extent to which compiler optimizations (negatively) impact the accuracy of existing deep learning techniques for function signature recovery. Our experiments show that a state-of-the-art deep learning technique has …
Learning Scenario Representation For Solving Two-Stage Stochastic Integer Programs, Yaoxin Wu, Wen Song, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Zhang
Learning Scenario Representation For Solving Two-Stage Stochastic Integer Programs, Yaoxin Wu, Wen Song, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many practical combinatorial optimization problems under uncertainty can be modeled as stochastic integer programs (SIPs), which are extremely challenging to solve due to the high complexity. To solve two-stage SIPs efficiently, we propose a conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE) based method to learn scenario representation for a class of SIP instances. Specifically, we design a graph convolutional network based encoder to embed each scenario with the deterministic part of its instance (i.e. context) into a low-dimensional latent space, from which a decoder reconstructs the scenario from its latent representation conditioned on the context. Such a design effectively captures the dependencies of …

Chosen-Instruction Attack Against Commercial Code Virtualization Obfuscators, Shijia Li, Chunfu Jia, Pengda Qiu, Qiyuan Chen, Jiang Ming, Debin Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
—Code virtualization is a well-known sophisticated obfuscation technique that uses custom virtual machines (VM) to emulate the semantics of original native instructions. Commercial VM-based obfuscators (e.g., Themida and VMProtect) are often abused by malware developers to conceal malicious behaviors. Since the internal mechanism of commercial obfuscators is a black box, it is a daunting challenge for the analyst to understand the behavior of virtualized programs. To figure out the code virtualization mechanism and design deobfuscation techniques, the analyst has to perform reverse-engineering on large-scale highly obfuscated programs. This knowledge learning process suffers from painful cost and imprecision. In this project, …

Contact tracing is a well-established and effective approach for the containment of the spread of infectious diseases. While Bluetooth-based contact tracing method using phones has become popular recently, these approaches suffer from the need for a critical mass adoption to be effective. In this paper, we present WiFiTrace, a network-centric approach for contact tracing that relies on passive WiFi sensing with no client-side involvement. Our approach exploits WiFi network logs gathered by enterprise networks for performance and security monitoring, and utilizes them for reconstructing device trajectories for contact tracing. Our approach is specifically designed to enhance the efficacy of traditional …

Code clones are duplicate code fragments that share (nearly) similar syntax or semantics. Code clone detection plays an important role in software maintenance, code refactoring, and reuse. A substantial amount of research has been conducted in the past to detect clones. A majority of these approaches use lexical and syntactic information to detect clones. However, only a few of them target semantic clones. Recently, motivated by the success of deep learning models in other fields, including natural language processing and computer vision, researchers have attempted to adopt deep learning techniques to detect code clones. These approaches use lexical information (tokens) …

User experience of mobile apps is an essential ingredient that can influence the user base and app revenue. To ensure good user experience and assist app development, several prior studies resort to analysis of app reviews, a type of repository that directly reflects user opinions about the apps. Accurately responding to the app reviews is one of the ways to relieve user concerns and thus improve user experience. However, the response quality of the existing method relies on the pre-extracted features from other tools, including manually labelled keywords and predicted review sentiment, which may hinder the generalizability and flexibility of …

Contextualized Knowledge-Aware Attentive Neural Network: Enhancing Answer Selection With Knowledge, Yang Deng, Yuexiang Xie, Yaliang Li, Min Yang, Wai Lam, Ying Shen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Answer selection, which is involved in many natural language processing applications, such as dialog systems and question answering (QA), is an important yet challenging task in practice, since conventional methods typically suffer from the issues of ignoring diverse real-world background knowledge. In this article, we extensively investigate approaches to enhancing the answer selection model with external knowledge from knowledge graph (KG). First, we present a context-knowledge interaction learning framework, Knowledge-aware Neural Network, which learns the QA sentence representations by considering a tight interaction with the external knowledge from KG and the textual information. Then, we develop two kinds of knowledge-aware …

Bayesian neural networks (BNNs) place distributions over the weights of a neural network to model uncertainty in the data and the network’s prediction. We consider the problem of verifying safety when running a Bayesian neural network policy in a feedback loop with infinite time horizon systems. Compared to the existing sampling-based approaches, which are inapplicable to the infinite time horizon setting, we train a separate deterministic neural network that serves as an infinite time horizon safety certificate. In particular, we show that the certificate network guarantees the safety of the system over a subset of the BNN weight posterior’s support. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Adapting neural networks to unseen tasks with few training samples on resource-constrained devices benefits various Internet-of-Things applications. Such neural networks should learn the new tasks in few shots and be compact in size. Meta-learning enables few-shot learning, yet the meta-trained networks can be overparameterised. However, naive combination of standard compression techniques like network pruning with meta-learning jeopardises the ability for fast adaptation. In this work, we propose adaptation-aware network pruning (ANP), a novel pruning scheme that works with existing meta-learning methods for a compact network capable of fast adaptation. ANP uses weight importance metric that is based on the sensitivity …

Relationships between companies serve as key channels through which the effects of past stock price movements and news events propagate and influence future price movements. Such relationships can be implicitly found in knowledge bases or explicitly represented as knowledge graphs. In this paper, we propose KnowledgeEnriched Company Embedding (KECE), a novel multi-stage attentionbased dynamic network embedding model combining multimodal information of companies with knowledge from Wikipedia and knowledge graph relationships from Wikidata to generate company entity embeddings that can be applied to a variety of downstream investment management tasks. Experiments on an extensive set of real-world stock prices and news …

Sofi: Reflection-Augmented Fuzzing For Javascript Engines, Xiaoyu He, Xiaofei Xie, Yuekang Li, Jianwen Sun, Feng Li, Wei Zou, Yang Liu, Lei Yu, Jianhua Zhou, Wenchang Shi, Wei Huo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
JavaScript engines have been shown prone to security vulnerabilities, which can lead to serious consequences due to their popularity. Fuzzing is an effective testing technique to discover vulnerabilities. The main challenge of fuzzing JavaScript engines is to generate syntactically and semantically valid inputs such that deep functionalities can be explored. However, due to the dynamic nature of JavaScript and the special features of different engines, it is quite challenging to generate semantically meaningful test inputs. We observed that state-of-the-art semantic-aware JavaScript fuzzers usually require manually written rules to analyze the semantics for a JavaScript engine, which is labor-intensive, incomplete and engine-specific. …

Representation Learning On Multi-Layered Heterogeneous Network, Delvin Ce Zhang, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Network data can often be represented in a multi-layered structure with rich semantics. One example is e-commerce data, containing user-user social network layer and item-item context layer, with cross-layer user-item interactions. Given the dual characters of homogeneity within each layer and heterogeneity across layers, we seek to learn node representations from such a multi-layered heterogeneous network while jointly preserving structural information and network semantics. In contrast, previous works on network embedding mainly focus on single-layered or homogeneous networks with one type of nodes and links. In this paper we propose intra- and cross-layer proximity concepts. Intra-layer proximity simulates propagation along …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Improving the performance of transportation network is a crucial task in traffic management. In this paper, we start with a cooperative routing problem, which aims to minimize the chance of road network breakdown. To address this problem, we propose a subgradient method, which can be naturally implemented as a semi-centralized pricing approach. Particularly, each road link adopts the pricing scheme to calculate and adjust the local toll regularly, while the vehicles update their routes to minimize the toll costs by exploiting the global toll information. To prevent the potential oscillation brought by the subgradient method, we introduce a heavy-ball method …

Taxthemis: Interactive Mining And Exploration Of Suspicious Tax Evasion Group, Yating Lin, Kamkwai Wong, Yong Wang, Rong Zhang, Bo Dong, Huamin Qu, Qinghua Zheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Tax evasion is a serious economic problem for many countries, as it can undermine the government’s tax system and lead to an unfair business competition environment. Recent research has applied data analytics techniques to analyze and detect tax evasion behaviors of individual taxpayers. However, they have failed to support the analysis and exploration of the related party transaction tax evasion (RPTTE) behaviors (e.g., transfer pricing), where a group of taxpayers is involved. In this paper, we present TaxThemis, an interactive visual analytics system to help tax officers mine and explore suspicious tax evasion groups through analyzing heterogeneous tax-related data. A …

Adversarial Attacks And Mitigation For Anomaly Detectors Of Cyber-Physical Systems, Yifan Jia, Jingyi Wang, Christopher M. Poskitt, Sudipta Chattopadhyay, Jun Sun, Yuqi Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The threats faced by cyber-physical systems (CPSs) in critical infrastructure have motivated research into a multitude of attack detection mechanisms, including anomaly detectors based on neural network models. The effectiveness of anomaly detectors can be assessed by subjecting them to test suites of attacks, but less consideration has been given to adversarial attackers that craft noise specifically designed to deceive them. While successfully applied in domains such as images and audio, adversarial attacks are much harder to implement in CPSs due to the presence of other built-in defence mechanisms such as rule checkers (or invariant checkers). In this work, we …

Feeder Vessel Routing And Transshipment Coordination At A Congested Hub Port, Jiangang Jin, Qiang Meng, Hai Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With increasing container-shipping traffic, congestion at transshipment hub ports happens from time to time incurring longer-than-expected waiting time for vessels and loss of transshipment connections. This situation is even worse for feeder companies, due to their relatively lower berthing priority. It is essential to design the feeder vessel routes and schedules in response to hub port congestion while ensuring efficient transshipment connection with their connecting long-haul services. In this paper, we study the vessel routing and transshipment coordination problem for a feeder liner company where only limited choices of berthing time slots are available at the hub port. We proposed …

Holistic Prediction For Public Transport Crowd Flows: A Spatio Dynamic Graph Network Approach, Bingjie He, Shukai Li, Chen Zhang, Baihua Zheng, Fugee Tsung
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper targets at predicting public transport in-out crowd flows of different regions together with transit flows between them in a city. The main challenge is the complex dynamic spatial correlation of crowd flows of different regions and origin-destination (OD) paths. Different from road traffic flows whose spatial correlations mainly depend on geographical distance, public transport crowd flows significantly relate to the region’s functionality and connectivity in the public transport network. Furthermore, influenced by commuters’ time-varying travel patterns, the spatial correlations change over time. Though there exist many works focusing on either predicting in-out flows or OD transit flows of …

Ava: Adversarial Vignetting Attack Against Visual Recognition, Binyu Tian, Felix Juefei-Xu, Qing Guo, Xiaofei Xie, Xiaohong Li, Yang Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Vignetting is an inherent imaging phenomenon within almost all optical systems, showing as a radial intensity darkening toward the corners of an image. Since it is a common effect for photography and usually appears as a slight intensity variation, people usually regard it as a part of a photo and would not even want to post-process it. Due to this natural advantage, in this work, we study the vignetting from a new viewpoint, i.e., adversarial vignetting attack (AVA), which aims to embed intentionally misleading information into the vignetting and produce a natural adversarial example without noise patterns. This example can …

Forecasting Interaction Order On Temporal Graphs, Wenwen Xia, Yuchen Li, Jianwei Tian, Shenghong Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Link prediction is a fundamental task for graph analysis and the topic has been studied extensively for static or dynamic graphs. Essentially, the link prediction is formulated as a binary classification problem about two nodes. However, for temporal graphs, links (or interactions) among node sets appear in sequential orders. And the orders may lead to interesting applications. While a binary link prediction formulation fails to handle such an order-sensitive case. In this paper, we focus on such an interaction order prediction (IOP) problem among a given node set on temporal graphs. For the technical aspect, we develop a graph neural …

Gp3: Gaussian Process Path Planning For Reliable Shortest Path In Transportation Networks, Hongliang Guo, Xuejie Hou, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper investigates the reliable shortest path (RSP) problem in Gaussian process (GP) regulated transportation networks. Specifically, the RSP problem that we are targeting at is to minimize the (weighted) linear combination of mean and standard deviation of the path's travel time. With the reasonable assumption that the travel times of the underlying transportation network follow a multi-variate Gaussian distribution, we propose a Gaussian process path planning (GP3) algorithm to calculate the a priori optimal path as the RSP solution. With a series of equivalent RSP problem transformations, we are able to reach a polynomial time complexity algorithm with guaranteed …

Code Integrity Attestation For Plcs Using Black Box Neural Network Predictions, Yuqi Chen, Christopher M. Poskitt, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are widespread in critical domains, and significant damage can be caused if an attacker is able to modify the code of their programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Unfortunately, traditional techniques for attesting code integrity (i.e. verifying that it has not been modified) rely on firmware access or roots-of-trust, neither of which proprietary or legacy PLCs are likely to provide. In this paper, we propose a practical code integrity checking solution based on privacy-preserving black box models that instead attest the input/output behaviour of PLC programs. Using faithful offline copies of the PLC programs, we identify their most important …

Estimating Homophily In Social Networks Using Dyadic Predictions, George Berry, Antonio Sirianni, Ingmar Weber, Jisun An, Michael Macy
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Predictions of node categories are commonly used to estimate homophily and other relational properties in networks. However, little is known about the validity of using predictions for this task. We show that estimating homophily in a network is a problem of predicting categories of dyads (edges) in the graph. Homophily estimates are unbiased when predictions of dyad categories are unbiased. Node-level prediction models, such as the use of names to classify ethnicity or gender, do not generally produce unbiased predictions of dyad categories and therefore produce biased homophily estimates. Bias comes from three sources: sampling bias, correlation between model errors …
