Analysis Of System Performance Metrics Towards The Detection Of Cryptojacking In Iot Devices, Richard Matthews
Analysis Of System Performance Metrics Towards The Detection Of Cryptojacking In Iot Devices, Richard Matthews
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
This single-case mechanism study examined the effects of cryptojacking on Internet of Things (IoT) device performance metrics. Cryptojacking is a cyber-threat that involves stealing the computational resources of devices belonging to others to generate cryptocurrencies. The resources primarily include the processing cycles of devices and the additional electricity needed to power this additional load. The literature surveyed showed that cryptojacking has been gaining in popularity and is now one of the top cyberthreats. Cryptocurrencies offer anyone more freedom and anonymity than dealing with traditional financial institutions which make them especially attractive to cybercriminals. Other reasons for the increasing popularity of …
Towards Identity Relationship Management For Internet Of Things, Mohammad Muntasir Nur
Towards Identity Relationship Management For Internet Of Things, Mohammad Muntasir Nur
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Identity and Access Management (IAM) is in the core of any information systems. Traditional IAM systems manage users, applications, and devices within organizational boundaries, and utilize static intelligence for authentication and access control. Identity federation has helped a lot to deal with boundary limitation, but still limited to static intelligence – users, applications and devices must be under known boundaries. However, today’s IAM requirements are much more complex. Boundaries between enterprise and consumer space, on premises and cloud, personal devices and organization owned devices, and home, work and public places are fading away. These challenges get more complicated for Internet …
Deepis: Susceptibility Estimation On Social Networks, Wenwen Xia, Yuchen Li, Jun Wu, Shenghong Li
Deepis: Susceptibility Estimation On Social Networks, Wenwen Xia, Yuchen Li, Jun Wu, Shenghong Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Influence diffusion estimation is a crucial problem in social network analysis. Most prior works mainly focus on predicting the total influence spread, i.e., the expected number of influenced nodes given an initial set of active nodes (aka. seeds). However, accurate estimation of susceptibility, i.e., the probability of being influenced for each individual, is more appealing and valuable in real-world applications. Previous methods generally adopt Monte Carlo simulation or heuristic rules to estimate the influence, resulting in high computational cost or unsatisfactory estimation error when these methods are used to estimate susceptibility. In this work, we propose to leverage graph neural …

Learning To Pre-Train Graph Neural Networks, Yuanfu Lu, Xunqiang Jiang, Yuan Fang, Chuan Shi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Graph neural networks (GNNs) have become the de facto standard for representation learning on graphs, which derive effective node representations by recursively aggregating information from graph neighborhoods. While GNNs can be trained from scratch, pre-training GNNs to learn transferable knowledge for downstream tasks has recently been demonstrated to improve the state of the art. However, conventional GNN pre-training methods follow a two-step paradigm: 1) pre-training on abundant unlabeled data and 2) fine-tuning on downstream labeled data, between which there exists a significant gap due to the divergence of optimization objectives in the two steps. In this paper, we conduct an …

Unsupervised Representation Learning By Predicting Random Distances, Hu Wang, Guansong Pang, Chunhua Shen, Congbo Ma
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Deep neural networks have gained great success in a broad range of tasks due to its remarkable capability to learn semantically rich features from high-dimensional data. However, they often require large-scale labelled data to successfully learn such features, which significantly hinders their adaption in unsupervised learning tasks, such as anomaly detection and clustering, and limits their applications to critical domains where obtaining massive labelled data is prohibitively expensive. To enable unsupervised learning on those domains, in this work we propose to learn features without using any labelled data by training neural networks to predict data distances in a randomly projected …
Technical Q8a Site Answer Recommendation Via Question Boosting, Zhipeng Gao, Xin Xia, David Lo, John Grundy
Technical Q8a Site Answer Recommendation Via Question Boosting, Zhipeng Gao, Xin Xia, David Lo, John Grundy
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Software developers have heavily used online question and answer platforms to seek help to solve their technical problems. However, a major problem with these technical Q&A sites is "answer hungriness" i.e., a large number of questions remain unanswered or unresolved, and users have to wait for a long time or painstakingly go through the provided answers with various levels of quality. To alleviate this time-consuming problem, we propose a novel DeepAns neural network-based approach to identify the most relevant answer among a set of answer candidates. Our approach follows a three-stage process: question boosting, label establishment, and answer recommendation. Given …

It is not clear yet why ADAM-alike adaptive gradient algorithms suffer from worse generalization performance than SGD despite their faster training speed. This work aims to provide understandings on this generalization gap by analyzing their local convergence behaviors. Specifically, we observe the heavy tails of gradient noise in these algorithms. This motivates us to analyze these algorithms through their Lévy-driven stochastic differential equations (SDEs) because of the similar convergence behaviors of an algorithm and its SDE. Then we establish the escaping time of these SDEs from a local basin. The result shows that (1) the escaping time of both SGD …

Towards Locality-Aware Meta-Learning Of Tail Node Embeddings On Networks, Zemin Liu, Wentao Zhang, Yuan Fang, Xinming Zhang, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Network embedding is an active research area due to the prevalence of network-structured data. While the state of the art often learns high-quality embedding vectors for high-degree nodes with abundant structural connectivity, the quality of the embedding vectors for low-degree or tail nodes is often suboptimal due to their limited structural connectivity. While many real-world networks are long-tailed, to date little effort has been devoted to tail node embedding. In this paper, we formulate the goal of learning tail node embeddings as a few-shot regression problem, given the few links on each tail node. In particular, since each node resides …

Social Influence Attentive Neural Network For Friend-Enhanced Recommendation, Yuanfu Lu, Ruobing Xie, Chuan Shi, Yuan Fang, Wei Wang, Xu Zhang, Leyu Lin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the thriving of online social networks, there emerges a new recommendation scenario in many social apps, called FriendEnhanced Recommendation (FER) in this paper. In FER, a user is recommended with items liked/shared by his/her friends (called a friend referral circle). These friend referrals are explicitly shown to users. Different from conventional social recommendation, the unique friend referral circle in FER may significantly change the recommendation paradigm, making users to pay more attention to enhanced social factors. In this paper, we first formulate the FER problem, and propose a novel Social Influence Attentive Neural network (SIAN) solution. In order to …

Dual-Dropout Graph Convolutional Network For Predicting Synthetic Lethality In Human Cancers, Ruichu Cai, Xuexin Chen, Yuan Fang, Min Wu, Yuexing Hao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Motivation: Synthetic lethality (SL) is a promising form of gene interaction for cancer therapy, as it is able to identify specific genes to target at cancer cells without disrupting normal cells. As high-throughput wet-lab settings are often costly and face various challenges, computational approaches have become a practical complement. In particular, predicting SLs can be formulated as a link prediction task on a graph of interacting genes. Although matrix factorization techniques have been widely adopted in link prediction, they focus on mapping genes to latent representations in isolation, without aggregating information from neighboring genes. Graph convolutional networks (GCN) can capture …
Meta-Learning On Heterogeneous Information Networks For Cold-Start Recommendation, Yuanfu Lu, Yuan Fang, Chuan Shi
Meta-Learning On Heterogeneous Information Networks For Cold-Start Recommendation, Yuanfu Lu, Yuan Fang, Chuan Shi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cold-start recommendation has been a challenging problem due to sparse user-item interactions for new users or items. Existing efforts have alleviated the cold-start issue to some extent, most of which approach the problem at the data level. Earlier methods often incorporate auxiliary data as user or item features, while more recent methods leverage heterogeneous information networks (HIN) to capture richer semantics via higher-order graph structures. On the other hand, recent meta-learning paradigm sheds light on addressing cold-start recommendation at the model level, given its ability to rapidly adapt to new tasks with scarce labeled data, or in the context of …

Biane: Bipartite Attributed Network Embedding, Wentao Huang, Yuchen Li, Yuan Fang, Ju Fan, Hongxia Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Network embedding effectively transforms complex network data into a low-dimensional vector space and has shown great performance in many real-world scenarios, such as link prediction, node classification, and similarity search. A plethora of methods have been proposed to learn node representations and achieve encouraging results. Nevertheless, little attention has been paid on the embedding technique for bipartite attributed networks, which is a typical data structure for modeling nodes from two distinct partitions. In this paper, we propose a novel model called BiANE, short for Bipartite Attributed Network Embedding. In particular, BiANE not only models the inter-partition proximity but also models …

Object detection is a fundamental visual recognition problem in computer vision and has been widely studied in the past decades. Visual object detection aims to find objects of certain target classes with precise localization in a given image and assign each object instance a corresponding class label. Due to the tremendous successes of deep learning based image classification, object detection techniques using deep learning have been actively studied in recent years. In this paper, we give a comprehensive survey of recent advances in visual object detection with deep learning. By reviewing a large body of recent related work in literature, …

Semi-Supervised Co-Clustering On Attributed Heterogeneous Information Networks, Yugang Ji, Chuan Shi, Yuan Fang, Xiangnan Kong, Mingyang Yin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Node clustering on heterogeneous information networks (HINs) plays an important role in many real-world applications. While previous research mainly clusters same-type nodes independently via exploiting structural similarity search, they ignore the correlations of different-type nodes. In this paper, we focus on the problem of co-clustering heterogeneous nodes where the goal is to mine the latent relevance of heterogeneous nodes and simultaneously partition them into the corresponding type-aware clusters. This problem is challenging in two aspects. First, the similarity or relevance of nodes is not only associated with multiple meta-path-based structures but also related to numerical and categorical attributes. Second, clusters …

Storage Management Strategy In Mobile Phones For Photo Crowdsensing, En Wang, Zhengdao Qu, Xinyao Liang, Xiangyu Meng, Yongjian Yang, Dawei Li, Weibin Meng
Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
In mobile crowdsensing, some users jointly finish a sensing task through the sensors equipped in their intelligent terminals. In particular, the photo crowdsensing based on Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) collects pictures for some specific targets or events and uploads them to nearby edge servers, which leads to richer data content and more efficient data storage compared with the common mobile crowdsensing; hence, it has attracted an important amount of attention recently. However, the mobile users prefer uploading the photos through Wifi APs (PoIs) rather than cellular networks. Therefore, photos stored in mobile phones are exchanged among users, in order to …

Learning and memory are two intertwined cognitive functions of the human brain. This paper shows how a family of biologically-inspired self-organizing neural networks, known as fusion Adaptive Resonance Theory (fusion ART), may provide a viable approach to realizing the learning and memory functions. Fusion ART extends the single-channel Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) model to learn multimodal pattern associative mappings. As a natural extension of ART, various forms of fusion ART have been developed for a myriad of learning paradigms, ranging from unsupervised learning to supervised learning, semi-supervised learning, multimodal learning, reinforcement learning, and sequence learning. In addition, fusion ART models …

Salience-Aware Adaptive Resonance Theory For Large-Scale Sparse Data Clustering, Lei Meng, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Sparse data is known to pose challenges to cluster analysis, as the similarity between data tends to be ill-posed in the high-dimensional Hilbert space. Solutions in the literature typically extend either k-means or spectral clustering with additional steps on representation learning and/or feature weighting. However, adding these usually introduces new parameters and increases computational cost, thus inevitably lowering the robustness of these algorithms when handling massive ill-represented data. To alleviate these issues, this paper presents a class of self-organizing neural networks, called the salience-aware adaptive resonance theory (SA-ART) model. SA-ART extends Fuzzy ART with measures for cluster-wise salient feature modeling. …

Deep Anomaly Detection With Deviation Networks, Guansong Pang, Chunhua Shen, Anton Van Den Hengel
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Although deep learning has been applied to successfully address many data mining problems, relatively limited work has been done on deep learning for anomaly detection. Existing deep anomaly detection methods, which focus on learning new feature representations to enable downstream anomaly detection methods, perform indirect optimization of anomaly scores, leading to data-inefficient learning and suboptimal anomaly scoring. Also, they are typically designed as unsupervised learning due to the lack of large-scale labeled anomaly data. As a result, they are difficult to leverage prior knowledge (e.g., a few labeled anomalies) when such information is available as in many real-world anomaly detection …

Multimodal Transformer Networks For End-To-End Video-Grounded Dialogue Systems, Hung Le, Doyen Sahoo, Nancy F. Chen, Steven C. H. Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Developing Video-Grounded Dialogue Systems (VGDS), where a dialogue is conducted based on visual and audio aspects of a given video, is significantly more challenging than traditional image or text-grounded dialogue systems because (1) feature space of videos span across multiple picture frames, making it difficult to obtain semantic information; and (2) a dialogue agent must perceive and process information from different modalities (audio, video, caption, etc.) to obtain a comprehensive understanding. Most existing work is based on RNNs and sequence-to-sequence architectures, which are not very effective for capturing complex long-term dependencies (like in videos). To overcome this, we propose Multimodal …

Increasingly, users are adopting community question-and-answer (Q&A) sites to exchange information. Detecting and eliminating toxic and divisive content in these Q&A sites are paramount tasks to ensure a safe and constructive environment for the users. Insincere question, which is founded upon false premises, is one type of toxic content in Q&A sites. In this paper, we proposed a novel deep learning framework enhanced pre-trained word embeddings with topical information for insincere question classification. We evaluated our proposed framework on a large real-world dataset from Quora Q&A site and showed that the topically enhanced word embedding is able to achieve better …

Kgat: Knowledge Graph Attention Network For Recommendation, Xiang Wang, Xiangnan He, Yixin Cao, Meng Liu, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To provide more accurate, diverse, and explainable recommendation, it is compulsory to go beyond modeling user-item interactions and take side information into account. Traditional methods like factorization machine (FM) cast it as a supervised learning problem, which assumes each interaction as an independent instance with side information encoded. Due to the overlook of the relations among instances or items (e.g., the director of a movie is also an actor of another movie), these methods are insufficient to distill the collaborative signal from the collective behaviors of users. In this work, we investigate the utility of knowledge graph (KG), which breaks …

Nowadays, healthy lifestyle, fitness, and diet habits have become central applications in our daily life. Positive psychology such as well-being and happiness is the ultimate dream of everyday people’s feelings (even without being aware of it). Wearable devices are being increasingly employed to support well-being and fitness. Those devices produce physiological signals that are analyzed by machines to understand emotions and physical state. The Internetof Things (IoT) technology connects (wearable) devices to the Internet to easily access and process data, even using Web technologies (aka Web of Things).
We design IAMHAPPY, an innovative IoT-based well-being recommendation system to encourage every …

Fashion recommendation has attracted increasing attention from both industry and academic communities. This paper proposes a novel neural architecture for fashion recommendation based on both image region-level features and user review information. Our basic intuition is that: for a fashion image, not all the regions are equally important for the users, i.e., people usually care about a few parts of the fashion image. To model such human sense, we learn an attention model over many pre-segmented image regions, based on which we can understand where a user is really interested in on the image, and correspondingly, represent the image in …

As computing services are increasingly cloud-based, corporations are investing in cloud-based security measures. The Security-as-a-Service (SECaaS) paradigm allows customers to outsource security to the cloud, through the payment of a subscription fee. However, no security system is bulletproof, and even one successful attack can result in the loss of data and revenue worth millions of dollars. To guard against this eventuality, customers may also purchase cyber insurance to receive recompense in the case of loss. To achieve cost effectiveness, it is necessary to balance provisioning of security and insurance, even when future costs and risks are uncertain. To this end, …

Entity alignment typically suffers from the issues of structural heterogeneity and limited seed alignments. In this paper, we propose a novel Multi-channel Graph Neural Network model (MuGNN) to learn alignment-oriented knowledge graph (KG) embeddings by robustly encoding two KGs via multiple channels. Each channel encodes KGs via different relation weighting schemes with respect to self-attention towards KG completion and cross-KG attention for pruning exclusive entities respectively, which are further combined via pooling techniques. Moreover, we also infer and transfer rule knowledge for completing two KGs consistently. MuGNN is expected to reconcile the structural differences of two KGs, and thus make …
Predictive Analysis For Cloud Infrastructure Metrics, Paridhi Agrawal
Predictive Analysis For Cloud Infrastructure Metrics, Paridhi Agrawal
Master's Projects
In a cloud computing environment, enterprises have the flexibility to request resources according to their application demands. This elastic feature of cloud computing makes it an attractive option for enterprises to host their applications on the cloud. Cloud providers usually exploit this elasticity by auto-scaling the application resources for quality assurance. However, there is a setup-time delay that may take minutes between the demand for a new resource and it being prepared for utilization. This causes the static resource provisioning techniques, which request allocation of a new resource only when the application breaches a specific threshold, to be slow and …
Data Gathering In Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc And Sensor Wireless Networks, Kimberly A. Brown
Data Gathering In Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc And Sensor Wireless Networks, Kimberly A. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Data gathering is a network communication task in which all of the network’s nodes send their individual messages to a distinguished sink node. In cognitive radio ad hoc and sensor wireless networks (CR-AHSWNs), unlicensed secondary users (SUs) opportunistically use channels when the licensed primary users are not using them. Therefore, the channels available to each SU vary with time and location, which makes the development of data gathering algorithms for CR-AHSWNs challenging.
In this thesis, a data gathering protocol for CR-AHSWNs is proposed. The protocol consists of several distributed SU action selection and channel selection algorithms. An algorithm that can …

We give a new algorithm for learning a two-layer neural network under a very general class of input distributions. Assuming there is a ground-truth two-layer network $y = A \sigma(Wx) + \xi$, where A, W are weight matrices, $\xi$ represents noise, and the number of neurons in the hidden layer is no larger than the input or output, our algorithm is guaranteed to recover the parameters A, W of the ground-truth network. The only requirement on the input x is that it is symmetric, which still allows highly complicated and structured input. Our algorithm is based on the method-of-moments framework …
