Machine Learning In Xenon1t Analysis, Dillon A. Davis, Rafael F. Lang, Darryl P. Masson

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

In process of analyzing large amounts of quantitative data, it can be quite time consuming and challenging to uncover populations of interest contained amongst the background data. Therefore, the ability to partially automate the process while gaining additional insight into the interdependencies of key parameters via machine learning seems quite appealing. As of now, the primary means of reviewing the data is by manually plotting data in different parameter spaces to recognize key features, which is slow and error prone. In this experiment, many well-known machine learning algorithms were applied to a dataset to attempt to semi-automatically identify known populations, …

Predicting Locations Of Pollution Sources Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Yiheng Chi, Nickolas D. Winovich, Guang Lin

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Pollution is a severe problem today, and the main challenge in water and air pollution controls and eliminations is detecting and locating pollution sources. This research project aims to predict the locations of pollution sources given diffusion information of pollution in the form of array or image data. These predictions are done using machine learning. The relations between time, location, and pollution concentration are first formulated as pollution diffusion equations, which are partial differential equations (PDEs), and then deep convolutional neural networks are built and trained to solve these PDEs. The convolutional neural networks consist of convolutional layers, reLU layers …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Auto face annotation, which aims to detect human faces from a facial image and assign them proper human names, is a fundamental research problem and beneficial to many real-world applications. In this work, we address this problem by investigating a retrieval-based annotation scheme of mining massive web facial images that are freely available over the Internet. In particular, given a facial image, we first retrieve the top n similar instances from a large-scale web facial image database using content-based image retrieval techniques, and then use their labels for auto annotation. Such a scheme has two major challenges: 1) how to …

As the amount of content users publish on social networking sites rises, so do the danger and costs of inadvertently sharing content with an unintended audience. Studies repeatedly show that users frequently misconfigure their policies or misunderstand the privacy features offered by social networks. A way to mitigate these problems is to develop automated tools to assist users in correctly setting their policy. This paper explores the viability of one such approach: we examine the extent to which machine learning can be used to deduce users' sharing preferences for content posted on Facebook. To generate data on which to evaluate …

On The K-Mer Frequency Spectra Of Organism Genome And Proteome Sequences With A Preliminary Machine Learning Assessment Of Prime Predictability, Nathan O. Schmidt

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

A regular expression and region-specific filtering system for biological records at the National Center for Biotechnology database is integrated into an object oriented sequence counting application, and a statistical software suite is designed and deployed to interpret the resulting k-mer frequencies|with a priority focus on nullomers. The proteome k-mer frequency spectra of ten model organisms and the genome k-mer frequency spectra of two bacteria and virus strains for the coding and non-coding regions are comparatively scrutinized. We observe that the naturally-evolved (NCBI/organism) and the artificially-biased (randomly-generated) sequences exhibit a clear deviation from the artificially-unbiased (randomly-generated) histogram distributions. …

Dynamically Optimized Context In Recommender Systems, Ghim-Eng Yap, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hwee Hwa Pang May 2005

Dynamically Optimized Context In Recommender Systems, Ghim-Eng Yap, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional approaches to recommender systems have not taken into account situational information when making recommendations, and this seriously limits the relevance of the results. This paper advocates context-awareness as a promising approach to enhance the performance of recommenders, and introduces a mechanism to realize this approach. We present a framework that separates the contextual concerns from the actual recommendation module, so that contexts can be readily shared across applications. More importantly, we devise a learning algorithm to dynamically identify the optimal set of contexts for a specific recommendation task and user. An extensive series of experiments has validated that our …

Multiple Learner Systems Using Resampling Methods, Binyun Xie Aug 1992

Multiple Learner Systems Using Resampling Methods, Binyun Xie

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

The N-Learners Problem deals with combining a number of learners such that the resultant system is "better", under some criterion, than the best of the individual learners. We consider a system of probably approximately correct concept learners. Depending on the available information, there are several methods to make the composite system better than the best of the individual learners. If a sample and an oracle that generates data points (but, not their classification) is available, then we show that we can achieve arbitrary levels of the normalized confidence of the composite system if (a) a robust learning algorithm is available, …
