Economically Optimal Nitrogen Side-Dressing Based On Vegetation Indices From Satellite Images Through On-Farm Experiments, Qianqian Du
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Optimal N fertilizer rates for corn (Zea mays L.) vary substantially within and among fields, and by corn growth stages. Improving N side-dressing management can improve fertilizer use efficiency, farmers’ profitability, and the sustainability of crop production. The objective of this study is to introduce a framework along with a methodology that can find the site-specific economically optimal N rates (EONRs) within one field for a particular growing season. An on-farm experiment was conducted in the 2019 corn growing season. A base N rate was applied uniformly on the field. NDRE images from the Sentinel-2 satellite were observed during …
A Machine Learning Approach To Understanding Emerging Markets, Namita Balani
A Machine Learning Approach To Understanding Emerging Markets, Namita Balani
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Logistic providers have learned to efficiently serve their existing customer bases with optimized routes and transportation resource allocation. The problem arises when there is potential for logistics growth in an emerging market with no previous data. The purpose of this work is to use industry data for previously known and well-documented markets to apply data analytic techniques such as machine learning to investigate the uncertainty in a new market. The thesis looks into machine learning techniques to predict miles per stop given historical data. It mainly focuses on Random Forest Regression Analysis, but concludes that additional techniques, such as Polynomial …

Although conversational search has become a hot topic in both dialogue research and IR community, the real breakthrough has been limited by the scale and quality of datasets available. To address this fundamental obstacle, we introduce the Multimodal Multi-domain Conversational dataset (MMConv), a fully annotated collection of human-to-human role-playing dialogues spanning over multiple domains and tasks. The contribution is two-fold. First, beyond the task-oriented multimodal dialogues among user and agent pairs, dialogues are fully annotated with dialogue belief states and dialogue acts. More importantly, we create a relatively comprehensive environment for conducting multimodal conversational search with real user settings, structured …

This paper conducts a systematic study on the role of visual attention in video object pattern understanding. By elaborately annotating three popular video segmentation datasets (DAVIS) with dynamic eye-tracking data in the unsupervised video object segmentation (UVOS) setting. For the first time, we quantitatively verified the high consistency of visual attention behavior among human observers, and found strong correlation between human attention and explicit primary object judgments during dynamic, task-driven viewing. Such novel observations provide an in-depth insight of the underlying rationale behind video object pattens. Inspired by these findings, we decouple UVOS into two sub-tasks: UVOS-driven Dynamic Visual Attention …
Simulating Subject Communities In Case Law Citation Networks, Jerrold Tsin Howe Soh
Simulating Subject Communities In Case Law Citation Networks, Jerrold Tsin Howe Soh
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
We propose and evaluate generative models for case law citation networks that account for legal authority, subject relevance, and time decay. Since Common Law systems rely heavily on citations to precedent, case law citation networks present a special type of citation graph which existing models do not adequately reproduce. We describe a general framework for simulating node and edge generation processes in such networks, including a procedure for simulating case subjects, and experiment with four methods of modelling subject relevance: using subject similarity as linear features, as fitness coefficients, constraining the citable graph by subject, and computing subject-sensitive PageRank scores. …

Framing is a process of emphasizing a certain aspect of an issue over the others, nudging readers or listeners towards different positions on the issue even without making a biased argument. Here, we propose FrameAxis, a method for characterizing documents by identifying the most relevant semantic axes (“microframes”) that are overrepresented in the text using word embedding. Our unsupervised approach can be readily applied to large datasets because it does not require manual annotations. It can also provide nuanced insights by considering a rich set of semantic axes. FrameAxis is designed to quantitatively tease out two important dimensions of how …

Recent Advances In Network-Based Methods For Disease Gene Prediction, Sezin Kircali Ata, Min Wu, Yuan Fang, Ou-Yang Le, Chee Keong Kwoh, Xiao-Li Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Disease-gene association through Genome-wide association study (GWAS) is an arduous task for researchers. Investigating single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that correlate with specific diseases needs statistical analysis of associations. Considering the huge number of possible mutations, in addition to its high cost, another important drawback of GWAS analysis is the large number of false-positives. Thus, researchers search for more evidence to cross-check their results through different sources. To provide the researchers with alternative and complementary low-cost disease-gene association evidence, computational approaches come into play. Since molecular networks are able to capture complex interplay among molecules in diseases, they become one of …

Deep Peak-Shaving Transformation Planning Of Thermal Power Units Based On Approximate Dynamic Programming, Weiqing Sun, Song He, Han Dong, Kunpeng Tian
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The generation of renewable energy has great randomness. The lack of flexibility of thermal power unit leads to the problem of peak adjustment. Three reformation schemes for thermal power units, including the thermal power unit internal transformation, configurating energy storage, and joint transformation of the two are proposed. Taking into account the additional cost of thermal powerunit in the deep peak regulation, the planning model of thermal power units depth peak-shaving transformation considering the unit combination is proposed, and the strategy iteration approximate dynamic programming algorithm to decouple the model is presented. The “curses of dimensionality” can be avoided …

According to the principle of renewal function, the approximated demand calculation method for spares of Weibull distribution using piecewise function to approximate the renewal function is proposed. It effectively avoids the issue of computational complexity for spares demand prediction. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed approximated algorithm ensures the calculation result of spares demand is less than that of engineering approximation algorithm. According to the given …

A causal loop diagram of system dynamics was used to analyze the key policy parameters of the ETS-RT that affect the development of new energy vehicles. Then a multi-agents-based model of ETS-RT is established to simulate the …
