This paper provides a fog-based approach to solving the traffic light optimization problem which utilizes the Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) model. ATSC systems demand the ability to strictly reflect real-time traffic state. The proposed fog computing framework, namely FogFly, aligns with this requirement by its natures in location-awareness, low latency and affordability to the changes in traffic conditions. As traffic data is updated timely and processed at fog nodes deployed close to data sources (i.e., vehicles at intersections) traffic light cycles can be optimized efficiently while virtualized resources available at network edges are efficiently utilized. Evaluation results show that …

Mobility-Driven Ble Transmit-Power Adaptation For Participatory Data Muling, Chung-Kyun Han, Archan Misra, Shih-Fen Cheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper analyzes a human-centric framework, called SmartABLE, for easy retrieval of the sensor values from pervasively deployed smart objects in a campus-like environment. In this framework, smartphones carried by campus occupants act as data mules, opportunistically retrieving data from nearby BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) equipped smart object sensors and relaying them to a backend repository. We focus specifically on dynamically varying the transmission power of the deployed BLE beacons, so as to extend their operational lifetime without sacrificing the frequency of sensor data retrieval. We propose a memetic algorithm-based power adaptation strategy that can handle deployments of thousands of …

Android is the most widely used mobile operating system with billions of users and devices. The popularity of Android apps have enticed malware writers to target them. Recently, Jamrozik et al. proposed an approach, named Boxmate, to mine sandboxes to protect Android users from malicious behaviors. In a nutshell, Boxmate analyzes the execution of an app, and collects a list of sensitive APIs that are invoked by that app in a monitoring phase. Then, it constructs a sandbox that can restrict accesses to sensitive APIs not called by the app. In such a way, malicious behaviors that are not observed …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Demand forecasting has been a challenging problem especially for products with short life cycles such as electronic goods and fashion items. Additionally, in the presence of limited past or historical data as well as the need for fast turnaround for forecast, producing timely and accurate demand forecast can be extremely challenging. In this study, we describe a cloud-based data gathering and processing system for intelligent demand forecasting.

On Learning Psycholinguistics Tools For English-Based Creole Languages Using Social Media Data, Pei-Chi Lo, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) tool is a psycholinguistics tool that has been widely used in both psychology and sociology research, and the LIWC scores derived from user-generated content are known to be good features for personality prediction [1], [2]. LIWC, however, is language specific as it relies on counting the percentage of predefined dictionary words occurring in the content. For content written in English Creoles which are languages based on English, the original English LIWC may not perform optimally due to its lack of words which are only used in the English Creoles. In this paper, we …

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses
The evolution of machine learning and computer vision in technology has driven a lot of
improvements and innovation into several domains. We see it being applied for credit decisions, insurance quotes, malware detection, fraud detection, email composition, and any other area having enough information to allow the machine to learn patterns. Over the years the number of sensors, cameras, and cognitive pieces of equipment placed in the wilderness has been growing exponentially. However, the resources (human) to leverage these data into something meaningful are not improving at the same rate. For instance, a team of scientist volunteers took 8.4 years, …

Multi-Resolution Analysis Of Large Molecular Structures And Interactions, Kasra Manavi
Computer Science ETDs
Simulation of large molecular structures and their interactions has become a major component of modern biomolecular research. Methods to simulate these type of molecules span a wide array of resolutions, from all atom molecular dynamics to model interaction energetics to systems of linear equations to evaluate population kinetics. In recent years, there has been an acceleration of molecular structural information production, primarily from x-ray crystallography and electron microscopy. This data has provided modelers the ability to produce better representations of these molecular structures. The purpose of this research is to take advantage of this information to develop multi-resolution models for …

A Multi-Task Approach To Incremental Dialogue State Tracking, Anh Duong Trinh, Robert J. Ross, John D. Kelleher
Conference papers
Incrementality is a fundamental feature of language in real world use. To this point, however, the vast majority of work in automated dialogue processing has focused on language as turn based. In this paper we explore the challenge of incremental dialogue state tracking through the development and analysis of a multi-task approach to incremental dialogue state tracking. We present the design of our incremental dialogue state tracker in detail and provide evaluation against the well known Dialogue State Tracking Challenge 2 (DSTC2) dataset. In addition to a standard evaluation of the tracker, we also provide an analysis of the Incrementality …
Reaction Simulations: A Rapid Development Framework, Brendan Drake Donohoe
Reaction Simulations: A Rapid Development Framework, Brendan Drake Donohoe
Shared Knowledge Conference
Chemical Reaction Networks (CRNs) are a popular tool in the chemical sciences for providing a means of analyzing and modeling complex reaction systems. In recent years, CRNs have attracted attention in the field of molecular computing for their ability to simulate the components of a digital computer. The reactions within such networks may occur at several different scales relative to one another – at rates often too difficult to directly measure and analyze in a laboratory setting. To facilitate the construction and analysis of such networks, we propose a reduced order model for simulating such networks as a system of …

Planning for civic amenities in a fast-changing urban setting such as Singapore is never an easy task. And as urban planners look toward more data-driven approaches toward urban planning, so grows the demand for more flexible geospatial analytics tools to facilitate a more iterative and granular approach toward urban planning. Such specific tools however, are not always readily available as plugins for traditional desktop GIS software, as numerous customizations must be made to model specific temporal planning scenarios for quick analysis, which could prove both costly and time-consuming. Hence, to address this need, open-source tools such as R Shiny could …

Education institutions collect feedback from students upon course completion and analyse it to improve curriculum design, delivery methodology and students' learning experience. A large part of feedback comes in the form textual comments, which pose a challenge in quantifying and deriving insights. In this paper, we present a novel approach of the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model to address this difficulty in handling textual student feedback. The analysis of quantitative part of student feedback provides generalratings and helps to identify aspects of the teaching that are successful and those that can improve. The reasons for the failure or success, however, …

Teacher evaluation is a vital element inimproving student learning outcomes. Course and instructor feedback given bystudents, provides insights that can help improve student learning outcomes andteaching quality. Teaching and course evaluation systems help to collectquantitative and qualitative feedback from students. Since manually analysingthe qualitative feedback is painstaking and a tedious process, usually, onlythe quantitative feedback is often used for evaluating the course and theinstructor. However, useful knowledge is hidden in the qualitative comments, inthe form of sentiments and suggestions that can provide valuable insights tohelp plan improvements in the course content and delivery. In order toefficiently gather, analyse and provide …

Automating Intention Mining, Qiao Huang, Xin Xia, David Lo, Gail C. Murphy
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Developers frequently discuss aspects of the systems they are developing online. The comments they post to discussions form a rich information source about the system. Intention mining, a process introduced by Di Sorbo et al., classifies sentences in developer discussions to enable further analysis. As one example of use, intention mining has been used to help build various recommenders for software developers. The technique introduced by Di Sorbo et al. to categorize sentences is based on linguistic patterns derived from two projects. The limited number of data sources used in this earlier work introduces questions about the comprehensiveness of intention …
Competence Assessment And Automated Feedback For Ultrasound-Guided Intervention Training, Matthew Holden
Competence Assessment And Automated Feedback For Ultrasound-Guided Intervention Training, Matthew Holden
Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports
There is an ongoing shift in the medical education community from a time-based model of medical education to a competency-based model. In the competency-based model, trainees’ performance must be continually monitored. But due to constraints on expert scheduling, this is infeasible for expert preceptors. Moreover, despite the advent of structured assessment rubrics, expert assessment remains subjective. This motivates the development of automated assessment methods. This can be complemented by methods for automatic feedback and instruction, which can be used to improve the training process and acceleration learning curves without the presence of an expert preceptor. Ultrasound-guided interventions are particularly challenging …

Building Classifiers With Gmdh For Health Social Networks (Bd Askapatient), John Cardiff, Liliya Akhtyamova, Mikhail Alexandrov
Conference Papers
Health social media offer useful data for patients and doctors concerning both various medicines and treatments. Usually, these data are accompanied by their assessments in 5- star scale. But such a detail classification has small usefulness because patients and doctors, first of all, want to know about negative cases and to study in detail the extreme ones. In the paper we build classifiers of texts just for these cases using combined classes as negative, all others and worst, satisfactory, best. For this, we study possibilities of different GMDH-based algorithms and compare them with the results of other methods. The selection …
Enhancing 3d Visual Odometry With Single-Camera Stereo Omnidirectional Systems, Carlos A. Jaramillo
Enhancing 3d Visual Odometry With Single-Camera Stereo Omnidirectional Systems, Carlos A. Jaramillo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We explore low-cost solutions for efficiently improving the 3D pose estimation problem of a single camera moving in an unfamiliar environment. The visual odometry (VO) task -- as it is called when using computer vision to estimate egomotion -- is of particular interest to mobile robots as well as humans with visual impairments. The payload capacity of small robots like micro-aerial vehicles (drones) requires the use of portable perception equipment, which is constrained by size, weight, energy consumption, and processing power. Using a single camera as the passive sensor for the VO task satisfies these requirements, and it motivates the …

The new generation of GPS-based tolling systems allow for a much higher degree of road sensing than has been available up to now. We propose an adaptive sampling scheme to collect accurate real-time traffic information from large-scale implementations of on-board GPS-based devices over a road network. The goal of the system is to minimize the transmission costs over all vehicles while satisfying requirements in the accuracy and timeliness of the traffic information obtained. The system is designed to make use of cellular communication as well as leveraging additional technologies such as roadside units equipped with WiFi and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) dedicated …

(‒)-Sparteine (1) and (–)-(α)-isosparteine (2) are members of the lupine alkaloid family.[1-2] Sparteine has found extensive use in asymmetric organic transformations, including lithiations[3] and Pd-catalyzed oxidations.[4-7] (α)-Isosparteine, which can be made from sparteine, has been utilized as a chiral ligand for a limited number of stereoselective reactions.[8-9] The two compounds differ in that 1 displays an exo-endo arrangement of the bridgehead hydrogens at C-11 and C-6, respectively, while 2 retains an exo-exo arrangement of these atoms (Figure 1). This study is focused on assigning 1H chemical shifts and coupling constants and 13C chemical shifts for N-methyl …

Ceramic and semiconductor research is limited in its ability to create holistic representations of data in concise, easily-accessible file formats or visual data representations. These materials are used in everyday electronics, and optimizing their electrical and physical properties is important for developing more advanced computational technologies. There is a desire to understand how changing the composition of the ceramic alters the shape and structure of the grown crystals. However, few accessible tools exist to generate a dataset with the proper organization to understand correlations between grain orientation and crystallographic orientation. This paper outlines an approach to analyzing the crystal structure …

Just as a human might struggle to interpret another human’s handwriting, a computer vision program might fail when asked to perform one task in two different domains. To be more specific, visualize a self-driving car as a human driver who had only ever driven on clear, sunny days, during daylight hours. This driver – the self-driving car – would inevitably face a significant challenge when asked to drive when it is violently raining or foggy during the night, putting the safety of its passengers in danger. An extensive understanding of the data we use to teach computer vision models – …

Predict The Failure Of Hydraulic Pumps By Different Machine Learning Algorithms, Yifei Zhou, Monika Ivantysynova, Nathan Keller
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Pump failure is a general concerned problem in the hydraulic field. Once happening, it will cause a huge property loss and even the life loss. The common methods to prevent the occurrence of pump failure is by preventative maintenance and breakdown maintenance, however, both of them have significant drawbacks. This research focuses on the axial piston pump and provides a new solution by the prognostic of pump failure using the classification of machine learning. Different kinds of sensors (temperature, acceleration and etc.) were installed into a good condition pump and three different kinds of damaged pumps to measure 10 of …

Online Spatio-Temporal Matching In Stochastic And Dynamic Domains, Meghna Lowalekar, Pradeep Varakantham, Patrick Jaillet
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Online spatio-temporal matching of servers/services to customers is a problem that arises at a large scale in many domains associated with shared transportation (e.g., taxis, ride sharing, super shuttles, etc.) and delivery services (e.g., food, equipment, clothing, home fuel, etc.). A key characteristic of these problems is that the matching of servers/services to customers in one stage has a direct impact on the matching in the next stage. For instance, it is efficient for taxis to pick up customers closer to the drop off point of the customer from the first stage of matching. Traditionally, greedy/myopic approaches have been adopted …

Probabilistic Collaborative Representation Learning For Personalized Item Recommendation, Aghiles Salah, Hady W. Lauw
Probabilistic Collaborative Representation Learning For Personalized Item Recommendation, Aghiles Salah, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present Probabilistic Collaborative Representation Learning (PCRL), a new generative model of user preferences and item contexts. The latter builds on the assumption that relationships among items within contexts (e.g., browsing session, shopping cart, etc.) may underlie various aspects that guide the choices people make. Intuitively, PCRL seeks representations of items reflecting various regularities between them that might be useful at explaining user preferences. Formally, it relies on Bayesian Poisson Factorization to model user-item interactions, and uses a multilayered latent variable architecture to learn representations of items from their contexts. PCRL seamlessly integrates both tasks within a joint framework. However, …
