High-Throughput Robotic Ethanol Inhibition Assays For Engineered Thermophilic Biofuel Strains, Kevin He, Daniel Olson, Marybeth Maloney, Anthony Lanahan May 2026

High-Throughput Robotic Ethanol Inhibition Assays For Engineered Thermophilic Biofuel Strains, Kevin He, Daniel Olson, Marybeth Maloney, Anthony Lanahan

Wetterhahn Science Symposium Posters

Ethanol stress assays are commonly used to evaluate microbial tolerance, metabolic adaptation, and fermentation performance. However, manual liquid handling introduces variability across replicate wells and small-volume pipetting steps, limiting reproducibility and throughput. This study developed an automated OT-2 robotic workflow to generate replicated ethanol concentration gradients for high-throughput inhibition assays in engineered thermophilic biofuel strains. Kinetic plate-reader measurements were used to quantify ethanol-dependent growth responses under anaerobic fermentation conditions. The reasearch question is: How do engineered thermophilic biofuel strains differ in ethanol-dependent growth inhibition under anaerobic fermentation conditions, and can automated robotic assays improve the reproducibility of these measurements? Can …

A Framework For Design Recovery, Eric Diep Mar 2025

A Framework For Design Recovery, Eric Diep

Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters

Due to the increase in diverse chip production over the past decade, reverse engineering has become a difficult and daunting task. This research will create a guideline for methods to achieve design recovery of microchip logic. To accomplish this, we plan on using hardware tools such as laser delayering and microscopy imaging. We will be focusing on the DA14580 Dialog semiconductor, commonly implemented in tile trackers, to extract information for design recovery. This implementation technique is novel due to tools that have not been performed with this type of microchip. The purpose for this research is to create a framework …

Application Of Graph Neural Networks With Phase Space Graphs, Parker H. Cole, Ryan Benton, Ralf Riedel, David Bourrie Mar 2025

Application Of Graph Neural Networks With Phase Space Graphs, Parker H. Cole, Ryan Benton, Ralf Riedel, David Bourrie

Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters

Non-linear phase-space analysis models data represented as a graph transitioning between states in the time domain. By studying data transitions, we can predict the time a particular behavior occurs and classify the events (states) in a system. For example, we could classify neurological sensor data to determine if a person is asleep (state), or predict the direction in which a stock will move (transitions) based on micro trade patterns.

Previous research has demonstrated success in phase-space graphs in classifying malware, detecting network intrusions, and predicting seizures. However, the solutions either require calculating global graph features as inputs to a classifier, …

Modelled Flooding Impacts On Lower Fish River Watershed, Sebastian Loschner Mar 2025

Modelled Flooding Impacts On Lower Fish River Watershed, Sebastian Loschner

Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters

This study investigates the impacts of compound flooding in the Lower Fish River watershed, Baldwin County, Alabama, with a focus on the potential effects of sea level rise due to climate change. Coastal flooding, particularly in smaller watersheds, is a growing concern as it results from the interaction of multiple factors, including rainfall, tidal changes, and extreme weather events. Compound flooding, which involves multiple flood drivers, is expected to worsen with climate change, as increased precipitation and rising sea levels create heightened flood risks. However, existing research on compound flooding predominantly focuses on large-scale watersheds, leaving a knowledge gap in …

Enhancing Evolutionary Computation: Optimizing Phylogeny-Informed Fitness Estimation Through Strategic Modifications, Chenfei Peng, Nic Mcphee Apr 2024

Enhancing Evolutionary Computation: Optimizing Phylogeny-Informed Fitness Estimation Through Strategic Modifications, Chenfei Peng, Nic Mcphee

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2024

In evolutionary computation, programs are developed using evolution's basic principles, such as selection, mutation, and recombination, to iteratively improve problem solutions towards optimal outcomes in a reasonable amount of time. To save time and be more efficient, we are currently exploring a modified version of phylogeny-informed fitness estimation. The original version evaluates each individual program on a subset of the training cases and estimates the performance everywhere else according to its parent's performance. Our approach involves comprehensive evaluation of promising programs across all training cases, increasing computational investment where the sub-sampled results indicated potential gains. This method led to our …

Using Mapreduce Streaming For Distributed Life Simulation On The Cloud, Atanas Radenski Jan 2013

Using Mapreduce Streaming For Distributed Life Simulation On The Cloud, Atanas Radenski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conway’s life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MR’s applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable …
