Online Learning: A Comprehensive Survey, Steven C. H. Hoi, Doyen Sahoo, Jing Lu, Peilin Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online learning represents a family of machine learning methods, where a learner attempts to tackle some predictive (or any type of decision-making) task by learning from a sequence of data instances one by one at each time. The goal of online learning is to maximize the accuracy/correctness for the sequence of predictions/decisions made by the online learner given the knowledge of correct answers to previous prediction/learning tasks and possibly additional information. This is in contrast to traditional batch or offline machine learning methods that are often designed to learn a model from the entire training data set at once. Online …

Interactive Probing Of Multivariate Time Series Prediction Models: A Case Of Freight Rate Analysis, Haonan Xu, Haotian Li, Yong Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present an interactive probing tool to create, modify and analyze what-if scenarios for multivariate time series models. The solution is applied to freight trading, where analysts can carry out sensitivity analysis on freight rates by changing demand and supply-related econometric variables and observing their resultant effects on freight indexes. We utilize various visualization techniques to enable intuitive scenario creation, alteration, and comprehension of time series inputs and model predictions. Our tool proved to be useful to the industry practitioners, demonstrated by a case study where freight traders are given hypothetical market scenarios and successfully generated quantitative freight index projection …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is an area of research and application that uses computers to analyze human text. It has seen wide adoption within several industries but few studies have investigated it for use in evaluating the effectiveness of educational interventions and pedagogies. Pedagogies such as Project based learning (PBL) centers on learners solving an authentic problem or challenge which leads to knowledge creation and higher engagement. PBL also lends itself well in plugging the gap between what is taught in classrooms and applying the knowledge gained to the real working environment. In this study, we seek to investigate how …

Solving Large-Scale Extensive-Form Network Security Games Via Neural Fictitious Self-Play, Wanqi Xue, Youzhi Zhang, Shuxin Li, Xinrun Wang, Bo An, Chai Kiat Yeo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Securing networked infrastructures is important in the real world. The problem of deploying security resources to protect against an attacker in networked domains can be modeled as Network Security Games (NSGs). Unfortunately, existing approaches, including the deep learning-based approaches, are inefficient to solve large-scale extensive-form NSGs. In this paper, we propose a novel learning paradigm, NSG-NFSP, to solve large-scale extensive-form NSGs based on Neural Fictitious Self-Play (NFSP). Our main contributions include: i) reforming the best response (BR) policy network in NFSP to be a mapping from action-state pair to action-value, to make the calculation of BR possible in NSGs; ii) …

Learning To Assign: Towards Fair Task Assignment In Large-Scale Ride Hailing, Dingyuan Shi, Yongxin Tong, Zimu Zhou, Bingchen Song, Weifeng Lv, Qiang Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Ride hailing is a widespread shared mobility application where the central issue is to assign taxi requests to drivers with various objectives. Despite extensive research on task assignment in ride hailing, the fairness of earnings among drivers is largely neglected. Pioneer studies on fair task assignment in ride hailing are ineffective and inefficient due to their myopic optimization perspective and timeconsuming assignment techniques. In this work, we propose LAF, an effective and efficient task assignment scheme that optimizes both utility and fairness. We adopt reinforcement learning to make assignments in a holistic manner and propose a set of acceleration techniques …

Vehicle Routing: Review Of Benchmark Datasets, Aldy Gunawan, Graham Kendall, Barry Mccollum, Hsin-Vonn Seow, Lai Soon Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) was formally presented to the scientific literature in 1959 by Dantzig and Ramser (DOI:10.1287/mnsc.6.1.80). Sixty years on, the problem is still heavily researched, with hundreds of papers having been published addressing this problem and the many variants that now exist. Many datasets have been proposed to enable researchers to compare their algorithms using the same problem instances where either the best known solution is known or, in some cases, the optimal solution is known. In this survey paper, we provide a list of Vehicle Routing Problem datasets, categorized to enable researchers to have easy access …

Dynamic Lane Traffic Signal Control With Group Attention And Multi-Timescale Reinforcement Learning, Qize Jiang, Jingze Li, Weiwei Sun, Baihua Zheng Aug 2021

Dynamic Lane Traffic Signal Control With Group Attention And Multi-Timescale Reinforcement Learning, Qize Jiang, Jingze Li, Weiwei Sun, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traffic signal control has achieved significant success with the development of reinforcement learning. However, existing works mainly focus on intersections with normal lanes with fixed outgoing directions. It is noticed that some intersections actually implement dynamic lanes, in addition to normal lanes, to adjust the outgoing directions dynamically. Existing methods fail to coordinate the control of traffic signal and that of dynamic lanes effectively. In addition, they lack proper structures and learning algorithms to make full use of traffic flow prediction, which is essential to set the proper directions for dynamic lanes. Motivated by the ineffectiveness of existing approaches when …

Step-Wise Deep Learning Models For Solving Routing Problems, Liang Xin, Wen Song, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Zhang Jul 2021

Step-Wise Deep Learning Models For Solving Routing Problems, Liang Xin, Wen Song, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Routing problems are very important in intelligent transportation systems. Recently, a number of deep learning-based methods are proposed to automatically learn construction heuristics for solving routing problems. However, these methods do not completely follow Bellman's Principle of Optimality since the visited nodes during construction are still included in the following subtasks, resulting in suboptimal policies. In this article, we propose a novel step-wise scheme which explicitly removes the visited nodes in each node selection step. We apply this scheme to two representative deep models for routing problems, pointer network and transformer attention model (TAM), and significantly improve the performance of …

Mmconv: An Environment For Multimodal Conversational Search Across Multiple Domains, Lizi Liao, Le Hong Long, Zheng Zhang, Minlie Huang, Tat-Seng Chua Jul 2021

Mmconv: An Environment For Multimodal Conversational Search Across Multiple Domains, Lizi Liao, Le Hong Long, Zheng Zhang, Minlie Huang, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although conversational search has become a hot topic in both dialogue research and IR community, the real breakthrough has been limited by the scale and quality of datasets available. To address this fundamental obstacle, we introduce the Multimodal Multi-domain Conversational dataset (MMConv), a fully annotated collection of human-to-human role-playing dialogues spanning over multiple domains and tasks. The contribution is two-fold. First, beyond the task-oriented multimodal dialogues among user and agent pairs, dialogues are fully annotated with dialogue belief states and dialogue acts. More importantly, we create a relatively comprehensive environment for conducting multimodal conversational search with real user settings, structured …

Paying Attention To Video Object Pattern Understanding, Wenguan Wang, Jianbing Shen, Xiankai Lu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Haibin Ling

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper conducts a systematic study on the role of visual attention in video object pattern understanding. By elaborately annotating three popular video segmentation datasets (DAVIS) with dynamic eye-tracking data in the unsupervised video object segmentation (UVOS) setting. For the first time, we quantitatively verified the high consistency of visual attention behavior among human observers, and found strong correlation between human attention and explicit primary object judgments during dynamic, task-driven viewing. Such novel observations provide an in-depth insight of the underlying rationale behind video object pattens. Inspired by these findings, we decouple UVOS into two sub-tasks: UVOS-driven Dynamic Visual Attention …

Frameaxis: Characterizing Microframe Bias And Intensity With Word Embedding, Haewoon Kwak, Jisun An, Elise Jing Jing, Yong-Yeol Ahn

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Framing is a process of emphasizing a certain aspect of an issue over the others, nudging readers or listeners towards different positions on the issue even without making a biased argument. Here, we propose FrameAxis, a method for characterizing documents by identifying the most relevant semantic axes (“microframes”) that are overrepresented in the text using word embedding. Our unsupervised approach can be readily applied to large datasets because it does not require manual annotations. It can also provide nuanced insights by considering a rich set of semantic axes. FrameAxis is designed to quantitatively tease out two important dimensions of how …

Recent Advances In Network-Based Methods For Disease Gene Prediction, Sezin Kircali Ata, Min Wu, Yuan Fang, Ou-Yang Le, Chee Keong Kwoh, Xiao-Li Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Disease-gene association through Genome-wide association study (GWAS) is an arduous task for researchers. Investigating single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that correlate with specific diseases needs statistical analysis of associations. Considering the huge number of possible mutations, in addition to its high cost, another important drawback of GWAS analysis is the large number of false-positives. Thus, researchers search for more evidence to cross-check their results through different sources. To provide the researchers with alternative and complementary low-cost disease-gene association evidence, computational approaches come into play. Since molecular networks are able to capture complex interplay among molecules in diseases, they become one of …

Solving The Winner Determination Problem For Online B2b Transportation Matching Platforms, Hoong Chuin Lau, Baoxiang Li Jun 2021

Solving The Winner Determination Problem For Online B2b Transportation Matching Platforms, Hoong Chuin Lau, Baoxiang Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We consider the problem of matching multiple shippers and transporters participating in an online B2B last-mile logistics platform in an emerging market. Each shipper places a bid that is made up of multiple jobs, where each job comprises key information like the weight, volume, pickup and delivery locations, and time windows. Each transporter specifies its vehicle capacity, available time periods, and a cost structure. We formulate the mathematical model and provide a Branch-and-Cut approach to solve small-scale problem instances exactly and larger scale instances heuristically using an Adaptive Large Neighbourhood Search approach. To increase the win percentage of both shippers …

Delving Deep Into Many-To-Many Attention For Few-Shot Video Object Segmentation, Haoxin Chen, Hanjie Wu, Nanxuan Zhao, Sucheng Ren, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper tackles the task of Few-Shot Video Object Segmentation (FSVOS), i.e., segmenting objects in the query videos with certain class specified in a few labeled support images. The key is to model the relationship between the query videos and the support images for propagating the object information. This is a many-to-many problem and often relies on full-rank attention, which is computationally intensive. In this paper, we propose a novel Domain Agent Network (DAN), breaking down the full-rank attention into two smaller ones. We consider one single frame of the query video as the domain agent, bridging between the support …

Robot: Robustness-Oriented Testing For Deep Learning Systems, Jingyi Wang, Jialuo Chen, Youcheng Sun, Xingjun Ma, Dongxia Wang, Jun Sun, Peng Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, there has been a significant growth of interest in applying software engineering techniques for the quality assurance of deep learning (DL) systems. One popular direction is deep learning testing, where adversarial examples (a.k.a. bugs) of DL systems are found either by fuzzing or guided search with the help of certain testing metrics. However, recent studies have revealed that the commonly used neuron coverage metrics by existing DL testing approaches are not correlated to model robustness. It is also not an effective measurement on the confidence of the model robustness after testing. In this work, we address this gap by …

Tripdecoder: Study Travel Time Attributes And Route Preferences Of Metro Systems From Smart Card Data, Xiancai Tian, Baihua Zheng, Yazhe Wang, Hsao-Ting Huang, Chih-Cheng Hung

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we target at recovering the exact routes taken by commuters inside a metro system that are not captured by an Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system and hence remain unknown. We strategically propose two inference tasks to handle the recovering, one to infer the travel time of each travel link that contributes to the total duration of any trip inside a metro network and the other to infer the route preferences based on historical trip records and the travel time of each travel link inferred in the previous inference task. As these two inference tasks have interrelationship, most …

Escape From An Echo Chamber, Kuan-Chieh Lo, Shih-Chieh Dai, Aiping Xiong, Jing Jiang, Lun-Wei Ku Apr 2021

Escape From An Echo Chamber, Kuan-Chieh Lo, Shih-Chieh Dai, Aiping Xiong, Jing Jiang, Lun-Wei Ku

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An echo chamber effect refers to the phenomena that online users revealed selective exposure and ideological segregation on political issues. Prior studies indicate the connection between the spread of misinformation and online echo chambers. In this paper, to help users escape from an echo chamber, we propose a novel news-analysis platform that provides a panoramic view of stances towards a particular event from different news media sources. Moreover, to help users better recognize the stances of news sources which published these news articles, we adopt a news stance classification model to categorize their stances into “agree”, “disagree”, “discuss”, or “unrelated” …

Sentiment-Oriented Metric Learning For Text-To-Image Retrieval, Quoc Tuan Truong, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this era of multimedia Web, text-to-image retrieval is a critical function of search engines and visually-oriented online platforms. Traditionally, the task primarily deals with matching a text query with the most relevant images available in the corpus. To an increasing extent, the Web also features visual expressions of preferences, imbuing images with sentiments that express those preferences. Cases in point include photos in online reviews as well as social media. In this work, we study the effects of sentiment information on text-to-image retrieval. Particularly, we present two approaches for incorporating sentiment orientation into metric learning for cross-modal retrieval. Each …

Dismastd: An Efficient Distributed Multi-Aspect Streaming Tensor Decomposition, Keyu Yang, Yunjun Gao, Yifeng Shen, Baihua Zheng, Lu Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Tensor decomposition is a fundamental multidimensional data analysis tool for many data-driven applications, such as social computing, computer vision, and bioinformatics, to name but a few. However, the rapidly increasing streaming data nowadays introduces new challenges to traditional static tensor decomposition. It requires an efficient distributed dynamic tensor decomposition without re-computing the whole tensor from scratch. In this paper, we propose DisMASTD, an efficient distributed multi-aspect streaming tensor decomposition. First, we prove the optimal tensor partitioning problem is NP-hard. Second, we present two heuristic tensor partitioning approaches to ensure the load balancing. Third, we develop a distributed multi-aspect streaming tensor …

Urban Perception: Sensing Cities Via A Deep Interactive Multi-Task Learning Framework, Weili Guan, Zhaozheng Chen, Fuli Feng, Weifeng Liu, Liqiang Nie Apr 2021

Urban Perception: Sensing Cities Via A Deep Interactive Multi-Task Learning Framework, Weili Guan, Zhaozheng Chen, Fuli Feng, Weifeng Liu, Liqiang Nie

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Social scientists have shown evidence that visual perceptions of urban attributes, such as safe, wealthy, and beautiful perspectives of the given cities, are highly correlated to the residents' behaviors and quality of life. Despite their significance, measuring visual perceptions of urban attributes is challenging due to the following facts: (1) Visual perceptions are subjectively contradistinctive rather than absolute. (2) Perception comparisons between image pairs are usually conducted region by region, and highly related to the specific urban attributes. And (3) the urban attributes have both the shared and specific information. To address these problems, in this article, we present a …

Mixed Dish Recognition With Contextual Relation And Domain Alignment, Lixi Deng, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Qianru Sun, Sheng Tang, Yongdong Zhang, Tat-Seng Chua Apr 2021

Mixed Dish Recognition With Contextual Relation And Domain Alignment, Lixi Deng, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Qianru Sun, Sheng Tang, Yongdong Zhang, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mixed dish is a food category that contains different dishes mixed in one plate, and is popular in Eastern and Southeast Asia. Recognizing the individual dishes in a mixed dish image is important for health related applications, e.g. to calculate the nutrition values of the dish. However, most existing methods that focus on single dish classification are not applicable to the recognition of mixed dish images. The main challenge of mixed dish recognition comes from three aspects: a wide range of dish types, the complex dish combination with severe overlap between different dishes and the large visual variances of same …

Enconter: Entity Constrained Progressive Sequence Generation Via Insertion-Based Transformer, Lee Hsun Hsieh, Yang Yin Lee, Ee-Peng Lim Apr 2021

Enconter: Entity Constrained Progressive Sequence Generation Via Insertion-Based Transformer, Lee Hsun Hsieh, Yang Yin Lee, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Pretrained using large amount of data, autoregressive language models are able to generate high quality sequences. However, these models do not perform well under hard lexical constraints as they lack fine control of content generation process. Progressive insertion-based transformers can overcome the above limitation and efficiently generate a sequence in parallel given some input tokens as constraint. These transformers however may fail to support hard lexical constraints as their generation process is more likely to terminate prematurely. The paper analyses such early termination problems and proposes the ENtity-CONstrained insertion TransformER (ENCONTER), a new insertion transformer that addresses the above pitfall …

Structurally Enriched Entity Mention Embedding From Semi-Structured Textual Content, Lee Hsun Hsieh, Yang Yin Lee, Ee-Peng Lim Mar 2021

Structurally Enriched Entity Mention Embedding From Semi-Structured Textual Content, Lee Hsun Hsieh, Yang Yin Lee, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this research, we propose a novel and effective entity mention embedding framework that learns from semi-structured text corpus with annotated entity mentions without the aid of well-constructed knowledge graph or external semantic information other than the corpus itself. Based on the co-occurrence of words and entity mentions, we enrich the co-occurrence matrix with entity-entity, entity-word, and word-entity relationships as well as the simple structures within the documents. Experimentally, we show that our proposed entity mention embedding benefits from the structural information in link prediction task measured by mean reciprocal rank (MRR) and mean precision@K (MP@K) on two datasets for …

All The Wiser: Fake News Intervention Using User Reading Preferences, Kuan Chieh Lo, Shih Chieh Dai, Aiping Xiong, Jing Jiang, Lun Wei Ku Mar 2021

All The Wiser: Fake News Intervention Using User Reading Preferences, Kuan Chieh Lo, Shih Chieh Dai, Aiping Xiong, Jing Jiang, Lun Wei Ku

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To address the increasingly significant issue of fake news, we develop a news reading platform in which we propose an implicit approach to reduce people's belief in fake news. Specifically, we leverage reinforcement learning to learn an intervention module on top of a recommender system (RS) such that the module is activated to replace RS to recommend news toward the verification once users touch the fake news. To examine the effect of the proposed method, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation with 89 human subjects and check the effective rate of change in belief but without their other limitations. Moreover, 84% …

Privacy-Preserving Federated Deep Learning With Irregular Users, Guowen Xu, Hongwei Li, Yun Zhang, Shengmin Xu, Jianting Ning, Robert H. Deng Mar 2021

Privacy-Preserving Federated Deep Learning With Irregular Users, Guowen Xu, Hongwei Li, Yun Zhang, Shengmin Xu, Jianting Ning, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Federated deep learning has been widely used in various fields. To protect data privacy, many privacy-preserving approaches have also been designed and implemented in various scenarios. However, existing works rarely consider a fundamental issue that the data shared by certain users (called irregular users) may be of low quality. Obviously, in a federated training process, data shared by many irregular users may impair the training accuracy, or worse, lead to the uselessness of the final model. In this paper, we propose PPFDL, a Privacy-Preserving Federated Deep Learning framework with irregular users. In specific, we design a novel solution to reduce …

Singapore Airlines: Profit Recovery And Aircraft Allocation Models During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Michelle L. F. Cheong, Ulysses M. Z. Chong, Anne N. T. A. Nguyen, Su Yiin Ang, Gabriella P. Djojosaputro, Gordy Adiprasetyo, Kendra L. B. Gadong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

COVID-19 has severely impacted the global aviation industry, causing many airlines to downsize or exit the industry. For airlines which attempt to sustain their operations, they will need to respond to the increase in passenger and cargo demand, as countries recover slowly from the crisis due to the availability of vaccines. We built a series of spreadsheet models to first project the COVID-19 recovery rates by countries from 2021 to 2025, then forecast the passenger and cargo demand, using historical data as base figures. Using the financial and operation data, the revenue, expense, and profit can be projected, then an …

Waste Collection Routing Problem: A Mini-Review Of Recent Heuristic Approaches And Applications, Yun-Chia Liang, Vanny Minanda, Aldy Gunawan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The waste collection routing problem (WCRP) can be defined as a problem of designing a route to serve all of the customers (represented as nodes) with the least total traveling time or distance, served by the least number of vehicles under specific constraints, such as vehicle capacity. The relevance of WCRP is rising due to its increased waste generation and all the challenges involved in its efficient disposal. This research provides a mini-review of the latest approaches and its application in the collection and routing of waste. Several metaheuristic algorithms are reviewed, such as ant colony optimization, simulated annealing, genetic …

Model Uncertainty Guides Visual Object Tracking, Lijun Zhou, Antoine Ledent, Qintao Hu, Ting Liu, Jianlin Zhang, Marius Kloft Feb 2021

Model Uncertainty Guides Visual Object Tracking, Lijun Zhou, Antoine Ledent, Qintao Hu, Ting Liu, Jianlin Zhang, Marius Kloft

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Model object trackers largely rely on the online learning of a discriminative classifier from potentially diverse sample frames. However, noisy or insufficient amounts of samples can deteriorate the classifiers' performance and cause tracking drift. Furthermore, alterations such as occlusion and blurring can cause the target to be lost. In this paper, we make several improvements aimed at tackling uncertainty and improving robustness in object tracking. Our first and most important contribution is to propose a sampling method for the online learning of object trackers based on uncertainty adjustment: our method effectively selects representative sample frames to feed the discriminative branch …
