Daot: Domain-Agnostically Aligned Optimal Transport For Domain-Adaptive Crowd Counting, Huilin Zhu, Jingling Yuan, Xian Zhong, Zhengwei Yang, Zheng Wang, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Domain adaptation is commonly employed in crowd counting to bridge the domain gaps between different datasets. However, existing domain adaptation methods tend to focus on inter-dataset differences while overlooking the intra-differences within the same dataset, leading to additional learning ambiguities. These domain-agnostic factors,e.g., density, surveillance perspective, and scale, can cause significant in-domain variations, and the misalignment of these factors across domains can lead to a drop in performance in cross-domain crowd counting. To address this issue, we propose a Domain-agnostically Aligned Optimal Transport (DAOT) strategy that aligns domain-agnostic factors between domains. The DAOT consists of three steps. First, individual-level differences …

Efficient Navigation For Constrained Shortest Path With Adaptive Expansion Control, Wenwen Xia, Yuchen Li, Wentian Guo, Shenghong Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In many route planning applications, finding constrained shortest paths (CSP) is an important and fundamental problem. CSP aims to find the shortest path between two nodes on a graph while satisfying a path constraint. Solving CSPs requires a large search space and is prohibitively slow on large graphs, even with the state-of-the-art parallel solution on GPUs. The reason lies in the lack of effective navigational information and pruning strategies in the search procedure. In this paper, we propose SPEC, a Shortest Path Enhanced approach for solving the exact CSP problem. Our design rationales of SPEC rely on the observation that …
Meta-Complementing The Semantics Of Short Texts In Neural Topic Models, Ce Zhang, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Meta-Complementing The Semantics Of Short Texts In Neural Topic Models, Ce Zhang, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Topic models infer latent topic distributions based on observed word co-occurrences in a text corpus. While typically a corpus contains documents of variable lengths, most previous topic models treat documents of different lengths uniformly, assuming that each document is sufficiently informative. However, shorter documents may have only a few word co-occurrences, resulting in inferior topic quality. Some other previous works assume that all documents are short, and leverage external auxiliary data, e.g., pretrained word embeddings and document connectivity. Orthogonal to existing works, we remedy this problem within the corpus itself by proposing a Meta-Complement Topic Model, which improves topic quality …

Graph Neural Network With Self-Attention And Multi-Task Learning For Credit Default Risk Prediction, Zihao Li, Xianzhi Wang, Lina Yao, Yakun Chen, Guandong Xu, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose a graph neural network with self-attention and multi-task learning (SaM-GNN) to leverage the advantages of deep learning for credit default risk prediction. Our approach incorporates two parallel tasks based on shared intermediate vectors for input vector reconstruction and credit default risk prediction, respectively. To better leverage supervised data, we use self-attention layers for feature representation of categorical and numeric data; we further link raw data into a graph and use a graph convolution module to aggregate similar information and cope with missing values during constructing intermediate vectors. Our method does not heavily rely on feature engineering work and …
Equivariance And Invariance Inductive Bias For Learning From Insufficient Data, Tan Wang, Qianru Sun, Sugiri Pranata, Karlekar Jayashree, Hanwang Zhang
Equivariance And Invariance Inductive Bias For Learning From Insufficient Data, Tan Wang, Qianru Sun, Sugiri Pranata, Karlekar Jayashree, Hanwang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We are interested in learning robust models from insufficient data, without the need for any externally pre-trained model checkpoints. First, compared to sufficient data, we show why insufficient data renders the model more easily biased to the limited training environments that are usually different from testing. For example, if all the training "swan" samples are "white", the model may wrongly use the "white" environment to represent the intrinsic class "swan". Then, we justify that equivariance inductive bias can retain the class feature while invariance inductive bias can remove the environmental feature, leaving only the class feature that generalizes to any …
Pruning The Communication Bandwidth Between Reinforcement Learning Agents Through Causal Inference: An Innovative Approach To Designing A Smart Grid Power System, Xianjie Zhang, Yu Liu, Wenjun Li, Chen Gong
Pruning The Communication Bandwidth Between Reinforcement Learning Agents Through Causal Inference: An Innovative Approach To Designing A Smart Grid Power System, Xianjie Zhang, Yu Liu, Wenjun Li, Chen Gong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Electricity demands are increasing significantly and the traditional power grid system is facing huge challenges. As the desired next-generation power grid system, smart grid can provide secure and reliable power generation, and consumption, and can also realize the system’s coordinated and intelligent power distribution. Coordinating grid power distribution usually requires mutual communication between power distributors to accomplish coordination. However, the power network is complex, the network nodes are far apart, and the communication bandwidth is often expensive. Therefore, how to reduce the communication bandwidth in the cooperative power distribution process task is crucially important. One way to tackle this problem …
Class Is Invariant To Context And Vice Versa: On Learning Invariance For Out-Of-Distribution Generalization, Jiaxin Qi, Kaihua Tang, Qianru Sun, Xian-Sheng Hua, Hanwang Zhang
Class Is Invariant To Context And Vice Versa: On Learning Invariance For Out-Of-Distribution Generalization, Jiaxin Qi, Kaihua Tang, Qianru Sun, Xian-Sheng Hua, Hanwang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Out-Of-Distribution generalization (OOD) is all about learning invariance against environmental changes. If the context in every class is evenly distributed, OOD would be trivial because the context can be easily removed due to an underlying principle: class is invariant to context. However, collecting such a balanced dataset is impractical. Learning on imbalanced data makes the model bias to context and thus hurts OOD. Therefore, the key to OOD is context balance. We argue that the widely adopted assumption in prior work—the context bias can be directly annotated or estimated from biased class prediction—renders the context incomplete or even incorrect. In contrast, …
Exploiting Reuse For Gpu Subgraph Enumeration, Wentiao Guo, Yuchen Li, Kian-Lee Tan
Exploiting Reuse For Gpu Subgraph Enumeration, Wentiao Guo, Yuchen Li, Kian-Lee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Subgraph enumeration is important for many applications such as network motif discovery, community detection, and frequent subgraph mining. To accelerate the execution, recent works utilize graphics processing units (GPUs) to parallelize subgraph enumeration. The performances of these parallel schemes are dominated by the set intersection operations which account for up to $95\%$ of the total processing time. (Un)surprisingly, a significant portion (as high as $99\%$) of these operations is actually redundant, i.e., the same set of vertices is repeatedly encountered and evaluated. Therefore, in this paper, we seek to salvage and recycle the results of such operations to avoid repeated …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this study, an OCR system based on deep learning techniques was deployed to digitize scanned agricultural regulatory documents comprising of certificates and labels. Recognition of the certificates and labels is challenging as they are scanned images of the hard copy form and the layout and size of the text as well as the languages vary between the various countries (due to diverse regulatory requirements). We evaluated and compared between various state-of-the-art deep learningbased text detection and recognition model as well as a packaged OCR library – Tesseract. We then adopted a two-stage approach comprising of text detection using Character …

Interpreting Trajectories From Multiple Views: A Hierarchical Self-Attention Network For Estimating The Time Of Arrival, Zebin Chen, Xiaolin Xiao, Yue-Jiao Gong, Jun Fang, Nan Ma, Hua Chai, Zhiguang Cao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Estimating the time of arrival is a crucial task in intelligent transportation systems. Although considerable efforts have been made to solve this problem, most of them decompose a trajectory into several segments and then compute the travel time by integrating the attributes from all segments. The segment view, though being able to depict the local traffic conditions straightforwardly, is insufficient to embody the intrinsic structure of trajectories on the road network. To overcome the limitation, this study proposes multi-view trajectory representation that comprehensively interprets a trajectory from the segment-, link-, and intersection-views. To fulfill the purpose, we design a hierarchical …

Extract Human Mobility Patterns Powered By City Semantic Diagram, Zhangqing Shan, Weiwei Shan, Baihua Zheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With widespread deployment of GPS devices, massive spatiotemporal trajectories became more accessible. This booming trend paved the solid data ground for researchers to discover the regularities or patterns of human mobility. However, there are still three challenges in semantic pattern extraction including semantic absence, semantic bias and semantic complexity. In this paper, we invent and apply a novel data structure namely City Semantic Diagram to overcome above three challenges. First, our approach resolves semantic absence by exactly identifying semantic behaviours from raw trajectories. Second, the delicate design of semantic purification helps us to detect semantic complexity from human mobility. Third, …
Aligning Dual Disentangled User Representations From Ratings And Textual Content, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Aligning Dual Disentangled User Representations From Ratings And Textual Content, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Classical recommendation methods typically render user representation as a single vector in latent space. Oftentimes, a user's interactions with items are influenced by several hidden factors. To better uncover these hidden factors, we seek disentangled representations. Existing disentanglement methods for recommendations are mainly concerned with user-item interactions alone. To further improve not only the effectiveness of recommendations but also the interpretability of the representations, we propose to learn a second set of disentangled user representations from textual content and to align the two sets of representations with one another. The purpose of this coupling is two-fold. For one benefit, we …
P-Meta: Towards On-Device Deep Model Adaptation, Zhongnan Qu, Zimu Zhou, Yongxin Tong, Lothar Thiele
P-Meta: Towards On-Device Deep Model Adaptation, Zhongnan Qu, Zimu Zhou, Yongxin Tong, Lothar Thiele
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Data collected by IoT devices are often private and have a large diversity across users. Therefore, learning requires pre-training a model with available representative data samples, deploying the pre-trained model on IoT devices, and adapting the deployed model on the device with local data. Such an on-device adaption for deep learning empowered applications demands data and memory efficiency. However, existing gradient-based meta learning schemes fail to support memory-efficient adaptation. To this end, we propose p-Meta, a new meta learning method that enforces structure-wise partial parameter updates while ensuring fast generalization to unseen tasks. Evaluations on few-shot image classification and reinforcement …
Order Constraints In Optimal Transport, Fabian Lim, Laura Wynter, Shiau Hong Lim
Order Constraints In Optimal Transport, Fabian Lim, Laura Wynter, Shiau Hong Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Optimal transport is a framework for comparing measures whereby a cost is incurred for transporting one measure to another. Recent works have aimed to improve optimal transport plans through the introduction of various forms of structure. We introduce novel order constraints into the optimal transport formulation to allow for the incorporation of structure. We define an efficient method for obtaining explainable solutions to the new formulation that scales far better than standard approaches. The theoretical properties of the method are provided. We demonstrate experimentally that order constraints improve explainability using the e-SNLI (Stanford Natural Language Inference) dataset that includes human-annotated …

Robustness And Personalization In Federated Learning: A Unified Approach Via Regularization, Achintya Kundu, Pengqian Yu, Laura Wynter, Shiau Hong Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present a class of methods for robust, personalized federated learning, called Fed+, that unifies many federated learning algorithms. The principal advantage of this class of methods is to better accommodate the real-world characteristics found in federated training, such as the lack of IID data across parties, the need for robustness to outliers or stragglers, and the requirement to perform well on party-specific datasets. We achieve this through a problem formulation that allows the central server to employ robust ways of aggregating the local models while keeping the structure of local computation intact. Without making any statistical assumption on the …

Contours Of Virtual Enfreakment In Fighting Game Characters, Sercan Sengun, Peter Mawhorter, James Bowie-Wilson, Yusef Audeh, Haewoon Kwak, D. Fox Harrell
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Characters in fighting videogames1 such as Street Fighter V and Tekken7 typically reveal a phenomenon that we define as virtual enfreakment: their bodies, costumes, and fighting styles are exaggerated (1) in a manner that emphasizes perceived exoticism and (2) to enable them to be easily visually and conceptually distinguishable from one another. Here, using both quantitative and qualitative methods, including crowd-sourced surveys and analyses of game mechanics, we report on the contours of virtual enfreakment in those games. We specifically examine differences in character design across gender, national-origin, and skin-color lines. Disappointingly but not surprisingly, we find racism and sexism …

Urbanisation is resulting in rapid growth in road networks within cities. The evolution of road networks can be indicative of a city's economic growth and it is a field of research gaining prominence in recent years. This paper proposes a framework for spatial partition of large scale road networks that produces appropriately sized geospatial units in order to identify the type of community they serve. To this end, we have developed a three-stage procedure which first partitions the road network using Louvain method, followed by outlining the boundary of each partition using Uber H3 grids before classifying each partition using …

Consensus Formation On Heterogeneous Networks, Edoardo Fadda, Junda He, Claudia J. Tessone, Paolo Barucca
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Reaching consensus-a macroscopic state where the system constituents display the same microscopic state-is a necessity in multiple complex socio-technical and techno-economic systems: their correct functioning ultimately depends on it. In many distributed systems-of which blockchain-based applications are a paradigmatic example-the process of consensus formation is crucial not only for the emergence of a leading majority but for the very functioning of the system. We build a minimalistic network model of consensus formation on blockchain systems for quantifying how central nodes-with respect to their average distance to others-can leverage on their position to obtain competitive advantage in the consensus process. We …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Person re-identification (Re-ID) aims at retrieving a person of interest across multiple non-overlapping cameras. With the advancement of deep neural networks and increasing demand of intelligent video surveillance, it has gained significantly increased interest in the computer vision community. By dissecting the involved components in developing a person Re-ID system, we categorize it into the closed-world and open-world settings. We first conduct a comprehensive overview with in-depth analysis for closed-world person Re-ID from three different perspectives, including deep feature representation learning, deep metric learning and ranking optimization. With the performance saturation under closed-world setting, the research focus for person Re-ID …

Decomposing Generation Networks With Structure Prediction For Recipe Generation, Hao Wang, Guosheng Lin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chunyan Miao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recipe generation from food images and ingredients is a challenging task, which requires the interpretation of the information from another modality. Different from the image captioning task, where the captions usually have one sentence, cooking instructions contain multiple sentences and have obvious structures. To help the model capture the recipe structure and avoid missing some cooking details, we propose a novel framework: Decomposing Generation Networks (DGN) with structure prediction, to get more structured and complete recipe generation outputs. Specifically, we split each cooking instruction into several phases, and assign different sub-generators to each phase. Our approach includes two novel ideas: …

Achievement systems have been actively adopted in gaming platforms to maintain players’ interests. Among them, trophies in PlayStation games are one of the most successful achievement systems. While the importance of trophy design has been casually discussed in many game developers’ forums, there has been no systematic study of the historical dataset of trophies yet. In this work, we construct a complete dataset of PlayStation games and their trophies and investigate them from both the developers’ and players’ perspectives.

Competition And Third-Party Platform-Integration In Ride-Sourcing Markets, Yaqian Zhou, Hai Yang, Jintao Ke, Hai Wang, Xinwei Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recently, some third-party integrators attempt to integrate the ride services offered by multiple independent ride-sourcing platforms. Accordingly, passengers can request ride through the integrators and receive ride service from any one of the ride-sourcing platforms. This novel business model, termed as third-party platform-integration in this work, has potentials to alleviate market fragmentation cost resulting from demand splitting among multiple platforms. Although most existing studies focus on operation strategies for one single monopolist platform, much less is known about the competition and platform-integration and their implications on operation strategy and system efficiency. In this work, we propose mathematical models to describe …

Managing The Phaseout Of Coal Power: A Comparison Of Power Decarbonization Pathways In Jilin Province, Weirong Zhang, Zhixu Meng, Jiongjun Yang, Yan Song, Yiou Zhou, Changhong Zhao, Jiahai Yuan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the periodic goals of reaching carbon emission peak before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060 (“dual carbon” goals), China shows its unprecedented determination to coal power phaseout. This research takes Jilin Province to showcase possible pathways of coal power units’ phaseout on provincial level. We set up four different coal power phaseout scenarios, under which their transition cost and effectiveness would be calculated, respectively. In terms of natural resource endowment and electricity demand, Jilin Province would achieve a complete coal power phaseout by 2045 or even by 2040. However, after assessing the effectiveness of power transition under the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this modern era, traffic congestion has become a major source of negative economic and environmental impact for urban areas worldwide. One of the most efficient ways to mitigate traffic congestion is through future traffic prediction. The field of traffic prediction has evolved greatly ever since its inception in the late 70s. Earlier studies mainly use classical statistical models such as ARIMA and its variants. Then, researchers started to focus on machine learning models due to their power and flexibility. As theoretical and technological advances emerge, we enter the era of deep neural network, which gained popularity due to its …

Estimating Stranded Coal Assets In China's Power Sector, Weirong Zhang, Mengjia Ren, Junjie Kang, Yiou Zhou, Jiahai Yuan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
China has suffered overcapacity in coal power since 2016. With growing electricity demand and an economic crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic, China faces a dilemma between easing restrictive policies for short-term growth in coal-fired power production and keeping restrictions in place for long-term sustainability. In this paper, we measure the risks faced by China's coal power units to become stranded in the next decade and estimate the associated economic costs for different shareholders. By implementing restrictive policies on coal power expansion, China can avoid 90% of stranded coal assets by 2025.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We design and evaluate VICTOR, an easy-to-apply module on top of a recommender system to mitigate misinformation. VICTOR takes an elegant, implicit approach to deliver fake-news verifications, such that readers of fake news can continuously access more verified news articles about fake-news events without explicit correction. We frame fake-news intervention within VICTOR as a graph-based question-answering (QA) task, with Q as a fake-news article and A as the corresponding verified articles. Specifically, VICTOR adopts reinforcement learning: it first considers fake-news readers’ preferences supported by underlying news recommender systems and then directs their reading sequence towards the verified news articles. To …

Estimating Financial Information Asymmetry In Real Estate Transactions In China: An Application Of Two-Tier Frontier Model, Ganlin Pu, Ying Zhang, Li-Chen Chou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This study applies the two-tier stochastic frontier model to estimate the distribution of housing transaction information in Hangzhou, Wenzhou, Ningbo, and Jinhua (four cities in Zhejiang Province, China) during the year 2018, to analyze the difference in the price information acquired by the buyers and sellers in the transaction, and the effect of information asymmetry on the transaction price. The empirical results show that in each city, during the housing transaction process, the supplier has more complete information about house prices than consumers, and can therefore implement price discrimination strategies in setting service prices. Due to the disadvantage in acquired …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We tackle the problem of domain adaptation for inertial sensing-based human activity recognition (HAR) applications -i.e., in developing mechanisms that allow a classifier trained on sensor samples collected under a certain narrow context to continue to achieve high activity recognition accuracy even when applied to other contexts. This is a problem of high practical importance as the current requirement of labeled training data for adapting such classifiers to every new individual, device, or on-body location is a major roadblock to community-scale adoption of HAR-based applications. We particularly investigate the possibility of ensuring robust classifier operation, without requiring any new labeled …

While Math Word Problem (MWP) solving has emerged as a popular field of study and made great progress in recent years, most existing methods are benchmarked solely on one or two datasets and implemented with different configurations. In this paper, we introduce the first open-source library for solving MWPs called MWPToolkit, which provides a unified, comprehensive, and extensible framework for the research purpose. Specifically, we deploy 17 deep learning-based MWP solvers and 6 MWP datasets in our toolkit. These MWP solvers are advanced models for MWP solving, covering the categories of Seq2seq, Seq2Tree, Graph2Tree, and Pre-trained Language Models. And these …
