Towards Testing, Detecting, And Debloating Insecure Components In Android Applications, Zicheng Zhang
Towards Testing, Detecting, And Debloating Insecure Components In Android Applications, Zicheng Zhang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The Android ecosystem’s openness and extensibility have fueled its dominance in the mobile market, but they also broaden the attack surface of applications by introducing insecure or redundant methods. Vulnerabilities arise from various sources, including insecure API usage, code cloning, and feature bloat, especially from unneeded components introduced during development. To address these challenges, this dissertation presents a systematic, three-phase pipeline that transitions seamlessly from vulnerability discovery to clone-based detection and, ultimately, to dynamic mitigation through runtime debloating. Each phase builds upon the insights and limitations of the previous, collectively forming a practical approach to improving Android app security.

Continual Learning With Neural Networks, Pham Hong Quang
Continual Learning With Neural Networks, Pham Hong Quang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Recent years have witnessed tremendous successes of artificial neural networks in many applications, ranging from visual perception to language understanding. However, such achievements have been mostly demonstrated on a large amount of labeled data that is static throughout learning. In contrast, real-world environments are always evolving, where new patterns emerge and the older ones become inactive before reappearing in the future. In this respect, continual learning aims to achieve a higher level of intelligence by learning online on a data stream of several tasks. As it turns out, neural networks are not equipped to learn continually: they lack the ability …
Efficient Algorithms For Trajectory-Aware Mobile Crowdsourcing, Chung-Kyun Han
Efficient Algorithms For Trajectory-Aware Mobile Crowdsourcing, Chung-Kyun Han
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Mobile crowdsourcing, a subclass of crowdsourcing dealing with location-specific tasks, is prevalent in our daily life. From sensing urban environment such as noise, air pollution to package delivery, various location-specific tasks are posted on mobile crowdsourcing platforms to tap on the pool of crowdsourced workers. Many digital platforms compete with each other to expand and retain their pool of crowdsourced workers. Comparing with the traditional workforce, crowdsourced workers do not dedicate their time to do tasks fully and have strong spatiotemporal preferences. The ignorance of crowdsourced workers’ mobility patterns and the lack of personalization would lead to crowdsourced workers’ exodus, …

Exploiting Mobility For Predictive Urban Analytics & Operations, Kasthuri Jayarajah
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
As cities worldwide invest heavily in smart city infrastructure, it invites opportunities for a next wave of urban analytics. Unlike its predecessors, urban analytics applications and services can now be real-time and proactive -- they can (a) leverage situational data from large deployments of connected sensors, (b) capture attributes of a variety of entities that make up the urban fabric (e.g., people and their social relationships, transport nodes, utilities, etc.), and (c) use predictive insights to both proactively optimize urban operations (e.g., HVAC systems in smart buildings, buses in the transportation network, crowd-workers, etc.) and promote smarter policy decisions (e.g., …

Making Sense Of Crowd-Generated Content In Domain-Specific Settings, Agus Sulistya
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The rapid advances of the Web have changed the ways information is distributed and exchanged among individuals and organizations. Various content from different domains are generated daily and contributed by users' daily activities, such as posting messages in a microblog platform, or collaborating in a question and answer site. To deal with such tremendous volume of user generated content, there is a need for approaches that are able to handle the mass amount of available data and to extract knowledge hidden in the user generated content. This dissertation attempts to make sense of the generated content to help in three …
On-The-Fly Android Static Analysis With Applications In Vulnerability Discovery, Daoyuan Wu
On-The-Fly Android Static Analysis With Applications In Vulnerability Discovery, Daoyuan Wu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Static analysis is a common program analysis technique extensively used in the software security field. Widely-used static analysis tools for Android, e.g., Amandroid and FlowDroid, perform the whole-app analysis which is comprehensive yet at the cost of huge overheads. In this dissertation, we make a first attempt to explore a novel on-demand analysis that creatively leverages bytecode search to guide inter-procedural analysis on the fly or just in time, and develop such on-the-fly analysis into a tool, called BackDroid, for Android apps. We further explore how the core technique of on-the-fly static analysis in BackDroid can enable different vulnerability studies …

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The explosive growth of the ecosystem of personal and ambient computing de- vices coupled with the proliferation of high-speed connectivity has enabled ex- tremely powerful and varied mobile computing applications that are used every- where. While such applications have tremendous potential to improve the lives of impaired users, most mobile applications have impoverished designs to be inclusive– lacking support for users with specific disabilities. Mobile app designers today haveinadequate support to design existing classes of apps to support users with specific disabilities, and more so, lack the support to design apps that specifically target these users. One way to resolve …

Online Learning With Nonlinear Models, Doyen Sahoo
Online Learning With Nonlinear Models, Doyen Sahoo
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Recent years have witnessed the success of two broad categories of machine learning algorithms: (i) Online Learning; and (ii) Learning with nonlinear models. Typical machine learning algorithms assume that the entire data is available prior to the training task. This is often not the case in the real world, where data often arrives sequentially in a stream, or is too large to be stored in memory. To address these challenges, Online Learning techniques evolved as a promising solution to having highly scalable and efficient learning methodologies which could learn from data arriving sequentially. Next, as the real world data exhibited …

Social Correlation In Latent Spaces For Complex Networks, Freddy Chong Tat Chua
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation addresses the subject of measuring social correlation among users within a complex social network. Social correlation is closely related to the measurement of social influence in social sciences. While social influence focuses on the existence of causal influence among users, we take a computational approach to measure correlation strength among users based on their shared interactions. We call this social correlation. To formally model social correlation, we propose a framework which contains two major parts. The first part is that of representing users behavior in a computationally efficient and accurate manner. For example, social media users perform many …
