Geovig And Purevig: Geometry-Aware Architectures For Efficient Computer Vision, Omar Ismail Jan 2026

Geovig And Purevig: Geometry-Aware Architectures For Efficient Computer Vision, Omar Ismail

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Deploying deep learning models for medical image analysis on mobile devices requires a balance between inference latency, memory footprint, and delineating anatomical boundaries with high accuracy. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and mobile Vision Transformers (ViTs) offer efficiency, they often struggle to model the irregular, non-local geometric structures inherent in biological tissues without incurring prohibitive computational costs. In this thesis, we introduce GeoViG (Geometric Vision Graph), an architecture that bridges the gap between efficient grid-based processing and explicit Geometric Deep Learning. GeoViG introduces a novel transition from high-resolution pixel grids to low-resolution dynamic graphs via a SpreadEdgePool operator, a geometry-aware …

Universal Systems Simulation Via Constraint Hypergraphs With Applications To Digital Twins, John Morris Dec 2025

Universal Systems Simulation Via Constraint Hypergraphs With Applications To Digital Twins, John Morris

All Dissertations

The characterization of systems encompasses a variety of modeling frameworks designed to capture specific behaviors and components of various system domains. Whatever the framework, the core elements of a system representation are the information of the system and a description of how that information is related. The relations in deterministic systems are functions, which, when composed to form executable processes, can be used to simulate system data. A declarative modeling framework is one that encodes mechanisms for preparing these simulations within the model structure, allowing an external agent to form the execution processes required for a given context. To date, …

Predicting Simulation Times For Multiphase Thermal-Hydraulic Models, Andrew Yule, Andrew Taylor Nov 2025

Predicting Simulation Times For Multiphase Thermal-Hydraulic Models, Andrew Yule, Andrew Taylor

SMU Data Science Review

Addressing the challenge of computationally intensive OLGA

simulations in the oil and gas industry, a machine learning framework is

developed for accurate runtime prediction. A specialized feature extraction

pipeline identifies key parameters—such as simulation time, time step,

number of branches, and section count—from OLGA input files that serve as

high-impact predictors. Multiple predictive models, including regression,

tree-based ensembles, and neural networks, are implemented to validate

accuracy and robustness. Results reveal that prioritizing simulations based on

predicted runtimes optimizes licensing resources and reduces operational

costs, making real-time scheduling more efficient. This research demonstrates

the effectiveness of data-driven runtime prediction in enhancing …

How’S It Growing? Tools For Observing Snow And Sea Ice In A Changing Arctic Ocean, Ian Alexander Raphael Jun 2025

How’S It Growing? Tools For Observing Snow And Sea Ice In A Changing Arctic Ocean, Ian Alexander Raphael

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

September Arctic sea ice extent has diminished by roughly 50% in the 45 years since satellite observations began. The Arctic Ocean may experience ice-free summers within the next decade, with implications for habitat, resource extraction, geopolitics, and local and global climate change. To predict how Arctic sea ice will change in the future, we need to understand its behavior in the present. In situ sea ice mass balance measurements (snow accumulation, ice growth, snow and ice surface melt, and bottom melt) are essential for studying the processes driving rapid changes in the ice pack, and for validating remote sensing measurements …

An Analytical Review Of Preprocessing Techniques In Bengali Natural Language Processing, Sovon Chakraborty, Protiva Das, Shakib Mahmud Dipto, Md Aktaruzzaman Pramanik, Jannatun Noor

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Research in Bengali Natural Language Processing (BNLP) is rapidly expanding. Despite being one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, BNLP research remains insufficient, particularly in Bengali speech recognition. The languages rich morphology, agglutinative structure, and diverse dialects make text and speech processing especially challenging. However, these challenges can be addressed with effective preprocessing techniques. Various organizations in Bangladesh and West Bengal are integrating Natural Language Processing (NLP) into their services, but without a thorough understanding of preprocessing, these implementations remain incomplete. Applying proper preprocessing techniques to the Bengali language will serve as a foundation for developing robust …

Pollutant Forecasting Using Neural Network-Based Temporal Models, Richard Pike

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Jing-Jin-Ji region of China is a highly industrialized and populated area of the country. Its periodic high pollution and smog includes particles smaller than 2.5 μm, known as PM2.5, linked to many respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses. PM2.5 concentration around Jing-Jin-Ji has exceeded China’s urban air quality safety threshold for over 20% of all days in 2017 through 2020.

The quantity of ground weather stations that measure the concentrations of these pollutants, and their valuable data, is unfortunately small. By employing many machine learning strategies, many researchers have focused on interpolating finer spatial grids of PM2.5, or hindcasting PM2.5. However, …

Modeling Repairable System Failure Data Using Nhpp Reliability Growth Mode., Eunice Ofori-Addo Jan 2023

Modeling Repairable System Failure Data Using Nhpp Reliability Growth Mode., Eunice Ofori-Addo

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Stochastic point processes have been widely used to describe the behaviour of repairable systems. The Crow nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) often known as the Power Law model is regarded as one of the best models for repairable systems. The goodness-of-fit test rejects the intensity function of the power law model, and so the log-linear model was fitted and tested for goodness-of-fit. The Weibull Time to Failure recurrent neural network (WTTE-RNN) framework, a probabilistic deep learning model for failure data, is also explored. However, we find that the WTTE-RNN framework is only appropriate failure data with independent and identically distributed interarrival …

Efficient Gpu Implementation Of Automatic Differentiation For Computational Fluid Dynamics, Mohammad Zubair, Desh Ranjan, Aaron Walden, Gabriel Nastac, Eric Nielsen, Boris Diskin, Marc Paterno, Samuel Jung, Joshua Hoke Davis

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Many scientific and engineering applications require repeated calculations of derivatives of output functions with respect to input parameters. Automatic Differentiation (AD) is a method that automates derivative calculations and can significantly speed up code development. In Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), derivatives of flux functions with respect to state variables (Jacobian) are needed for efficient solutions of the nonlinear governing equations. AD of flux functions on graphics processing units (GPUs) is challenging as flux computations involve many intermediate variables that create high register pressure and require significant memory traffic because of the need to store the derivatives. This paper presents a …

Exploring High Performance And Energy Efficient Graph Processing On Gpu, Robert P. Watling

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Parallel graph processing is central to analytical computer science applications, and GPUs have proven to be an ideal platform for parallel graph processing. Existing GPU graph processing frameworks present performance improvements but often neglect two issues: the unpredictability of a given input graph and the energy consumption of the graph processing. Our prototype software, EEGraph (Energy Efficiency of Graph processing), is a flexible system consisting of several graph processing algorithms with configurable parameters for vertex update synchronization, vertex activation, and memory management along with a lightweight software-based GPU energy measurement scheme. We observe relationships between different configurations of our software, …

Detecting Selfish Mining Attacks Against A Blockchain Using Machine Learing, Matthew A. Peterson Dec 2022

Detecting Selfish Mining Attacks Against A Blockchain Using Machine Learing, Matthew A. Peterson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)

Selfish mining is an attack against a blockchain where miners hide newly discovered blocks instead of publishing them to the rest of the network. Selfish mining has been a potential issue for blockchains since it was first discovered by Eyal and Sirer. It can be used by malicious miners to earn a disproportionate share of the mining rewards or in conjunction with other attacks to steal money from network users. Several of these attacks were launched in 2018, 2019, and 2020 with the attackers stealing as much as $18 Million. Developers made several different attempts to fix this issue, but …

Unoapi: Balancing Performance, Portability, And Productivity (P3) In Hpc Education, Konstantin Laufer, George K. Thiruvathukal

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

oneAPI is a major initiative by Intel aimed at making it easier to program heterogeneous architectures used in high-performance computing using a unified application programming interface (API). While raising the abstraction level via a unified API represents a promising step for the current generation of students and practitioners to embrace high- performance computing, we argue that a curriculum of well- developed software engineering methods and well-crafted exem- plars will be necessary to ensure interest by this audience and those who teach them. We aim to bridge the gap by developing a curriculum—codenamed UnoAPI—that takes a more holistic approach by looking …

Gpgpu Microbenchmarking For Irregular Application Optimization, Dalton R. Winans-Pruitt Aug 2022

Gpgpu Microbenchmarking For Irregular Application Optimization, Dalton R. Winans-Pruitt

Theses and Dissertations

Irregular applications, such as unstructured mesh operations, do not easily map onto the typical GPU programming paradigms endorsed by GPU manufacturers, which mostly focus on maximizing concurrency for latency hiding. In this work, we show how alternative techniques focused on latency amortization can be used to control overall latency while requiring less concurrency. We used a custom-built microbenchmarking framework to test several GPU kernels and show how the GPU behaves under relevant workloads. We demonstrate that coalescing is not required for efficacious performance; an uncoalesced access pattern can achieve high bandwidth - even over 80% of the theoretical global memory …

Smart Decision-Making Via Edge Intelligence For Smart Cities, Nathaniel Hudson Jan 2022

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Smart cities are an ambitious vision for future urban environments. The ultimate aim of smart cities is to use modern technology to optimize city resources and operations while improving overall quality-of-life of its citizens. Realizing this ambitious vision will require embracing advancements in information communication technology, data analysis, and other technologies. Because smart cities naturally produce vast amounts of data, recent artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are of interest due to their ability to transform raw data into insightful knowledge to inform decisions (e.g., using live road traffic data to control traffic lights based on current traffic conditions). However, training and …

A Practical Approach To Automated Software Correctness Enhancement, Aleksandr Zakharchenko Dec 2021

A Practical Approach To Automated Software Correctness Enhancement, Aleksandr Zakharchenko

Dissertations

To repair an incorrect program does not mean to make it correct; it only means to make it more-correct, in some sense, than it is. In the absence of a concept of relative correctness, i.e. the property of a program to be more-correct than another with respect to a specification, the discipline of program repair has resorted to various approximations of absolute (traditional) correctness, with varying degrees of success. This shortcoming is concealed by the fact that most program repair tools are tested on basic cases, whence making them absolutely correct is not clearly distinguishable from making them relatively more-correct. …

Component Damage Source Identification For Critical Infrastructure Systems, Nathan Davis Dec 2021

Component Damage Source Identification For Critical Infrastructure Systems, Nathan Davis

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are becoming increasingly prevalent for both Critical Infrastructure and the Industry 4.0 initiative. Bad values within components of the software portion of CPS, or the computer systems, have the potential to cause major damage if left unchecked, and so detection and locating of where these occur is vital. We further define features of these computer systems and create a use-based system topology. We then introduce a function to monitor system integrity and the presence of bad values as well as an algorithm to locate them. We then show an improved version, taking advantage of several system properties …

Using High-Performance Computing Profilers To Understand The Performance Of Graph Algorithms, Costain Nachuma

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

An algorithm designer working with parallel computing systems should know how the characteristics of their implemented algorithm affects various performance aspects of their parallel program. It would be beneficial to these designers if each algorithm came with a specific set of standards that identified which algorithms worked better for a specified system. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to take implementations of four graphing algorithms, extract their features such as memory consumption, scalability using profilers (Vtunes /Tau) to determine which algorithms work to their fullest potential in one of the three systems: GPU, shared memory system, or distributed memory …

Vehicular Adhoc NETworks (VANETs) is a new and emerging technology for wireless communications that has attracted considerable attention in the last years from the academic, scientific, industrial and governmental communities, due to the improvements and the new features that it brings to the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). In this paper, we present an algorithm that uses VANET technology to determine the total number of vehicles that are stopped at a traffic light at an intersection. To facilitate an efficient counting, we divide the road into fixed-size road regions and through a leader election mechanism, we designate one vehicle in each …

Nonlinear Least Squares 3-D Geolocation Solutions Using Time Differences Of Arrival, Michael V. Bredemann Apr 2020

Nonlinear Least Squares 3-D Geolocation Solutions Using Time Differences Of Arrival, Michael V. Bredemann

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This thesis uses a geometric approach to derive and solve nonlinear least squares minimization problems to geolocate a signal source in three dimensions using time differences of arrival at multiple sensor locations. There is no restriction on the maximum number of sensors used. Residual errors reach the numerical limits of machine precision. Symmetric sensor orientations are found that prevent closed form solutions of source locations lying within the null space. Maximum uncertainties in relative sensor positions and time difference of arrivals, required to locate a source within a maximum specified error, are found from these results. Examples illustrate potential requirements …

Storage Management Strategy In Mobile Phones For Photo Crowdsensing, En Wang, Zhengdao Qu, Xinyao Liang, Xiangyu Meng, Yongjian Yang, Dawei Li, Weibin Meng

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In mobile crowdsensing, some users jointly finish a sensing task through the sensors equipped in their intelligent terminals. In particular, the photo crowdsensing based on Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) collects pictures for some specific targets or events and uploads them to nearby edge servers, which leads to richer data content and more efficient data storage compared with the common mobile crowdsensing; hence, it has attracted an important amount of attention recently. However, the mobile users prefer uploading the photos through Wifi APs (PoIs) rather than cellular networks. Therefore, photos stored in mobile phones are exchanged among users, in order to …

Contrasting Geometric Variations Of Mathematical Models Of Self-Assembling Systems, Michael Sharp Dec 2019

Contrasting Geometric Variations Of Mathematical Models Of Self-Assembling Systems, Michael Sharp

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Self-assembly is the process by which complex systems are formed and behave due to the interactions of relatively simple units. In this thesis, we explore multiple augmentations of well known models of self-assembly to gain a better understanding of the roles that geometry and space play in their dynamics. We begin in the abstract Tile Assembly Model (aTAM) with some examples and a brief survey of previous results to provide a foundation. We then introduce the Geometric Thermodynamic Binding Network model, a model that focuses on the thermodynamic stability of its systems while utilizing geometrically rigid components (dissimilar to other …

Visualization And Machine Learning Techniques For Nasa’S Em-1 Big Data Problem, Antonio P. Garza Iii, Jose Quinonez, Misael Santana, Nibhrat Lohia

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we help NASA solve three Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1) challenges: data storage, computation time, and visualization of complex data. NASA is studying one year of trajectory data to determine available launch opportunities (about 90TBs of data). We improve data storage by introducing a cloud-based solution that provides elasticity and server upgrades. This migration will save $120k in infrastructure costs every four years, and potentially avoid schedule slips. Additionally, it increases computational efficiency by 125%. We further enhance computation via machine learning techniques that use the classic orbital elements to predict valid trajectories. Our machine learning model decreases trajectory …

Community Detection Via Neighborhood Overlap And Spanning Tree Computations, Ketki Kulkarni, Aris Pagourtzis, Katerina Potika, Petros Potikas, Dora Souliou

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

Most social networks of today are populated with several millions of active users, while the most popular of them accommodate way more than one billion. Analyzing such huge complex networks has become particularly demanding in computational terms. A task of paramount importance for understanding the structure of social networks as well as of many other real-world systems is to identify communities, that is, sets of nodes that are more densely connected to each other than to other nodes of the network. In this paper we propose two algorithms for community detection in networks, by employing the neighborhood overlap metric …

Driving And Effective Data-Ready Culture: How Companies Can Take On A Datadriven Approach To 11 Business, Johnson Poh

MITB Thought Leadership Series

TECHNOLOGY has turned the tables in favour of consumers, enabling them to find goods and services faster and access more choices. Companies now compete more intensely to capture consumers’ mindshare and scour for ways to keep their products relevant. But every coin has two sides. While technology has empowered consumers with choice, it has also offered companies a plethora of data to understand consumers better. This puts the odds in favour of companies that can leverage on data to gain consumer insights and meet their business objectives.

A Method Of Evaluation Of High-Performance Computing Batch Schedulers, Jeremy Stephen Futral Jan 2019

A Method Of Evaluation Of High-Performance Computing Batch Schedulers, Jeremy Stephen Futral

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

According to Sterling et al., a batch scheduler, also called workload management, is an application or set of services that provide a method to monitor and manage the flow of work through the system [Sterling01]. The purpose of this research was to develop a method to assess the execution speed of workloads that are submitted to a batch scheduler. While previous research exists, this research is different in that more complex jobs were devised that fully exercised the scheduler with established benchmarks. This research is important because the reduction of latency even if it is miniscule can lead to massive …
