Inferring Accurate Bus Trajectories From Noisy Estimated Arrival Time Records, Lakmal Meegahapola, Noel Athaide, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Shili Xiang, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Urban commuting data has long been a vital source of understanding population mobility behaviour and has been widely adopted for various applications such as transport infrastructure planning and urban anomaly detection. While individual-specific transaction records (such as smart card (tap-in, tap-out) data or taxi trip records) hold a wealth of information, these are often private data available only to the service provider (e.g., taxicab operator). In this work, we explore the utility in harnessing publicly available, albeit noisy, transportation datasets, such as noisy “Estimated Time of Arrival" (ETA) records (commonly available to commuters through transit Apps or electronic signages). We …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We live in a world in which our physical spaces are becoming increasingly enriched with computing technology. Pervasive displays have been at the forefront of this progression and are now commonplace. In this paper, we focus on the natural end-point of this trend and consider the case when displays become truly ubiquitous and saturate our physical environments. We use as motivation a state-of-the-art display deployment in which mobile users navigating the space are simultaneously exposed to many hundreds of displays within their field of view and we highlight a number of new research challenges.

Texture-Based Deep Neural Network For Histopathology Cancer Whole Slide Image (Wsi) Classification, Nelson Zange Tsaku Aug 2019

Texture-Based Deep Neural Network For Histopathology Cancer Whole Slide Image (Wsi) Classification, Nelson Zange Tsaku

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses

Automatic histopathological Whole Slide Image (WSI) analysis for cancer classification has been highlighted along with the advancements in microscopic imaging techniques. However, manual examination and diagnosis with WSIs is time-consuming and tiresome. Recently, deep convolutional neural networks have succeeded in histopathological image analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel cancer texture-based deep neural network (CAT-Net) that learns scalable texture features from histopathological WSIs. The innovation of CAT-Net is twofold: (1) capturing invariant spatial patterns by dilated convolutional layers and (2) Reducing model complexity while improving performance. Moreover, CAT-Net can provide discriminative texture patterns formed on cancerous regions of histopathological …

Synthetic, Yet Natural: Properties Of Wordnet Random Walk Corpora And The Impact Of Rare Words On Embedding Performance, Filip Klubicka, Alfredo Maldonado, Abhijit Mahalunkar, John D. Kelleher Jul 2019

Synthetic, Yet Natural: Properties Of Wordnet Random Walk Corpora And The Impact Of Rare Words On Embedding Performance, Filip Klubicka, Alfredo Maldonado, Abhijit Mahalunkar, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

Creating word embeddings that reflect semantic relationships encoded in lexical knowledge resources is an open challenge. One approach is to use a random walk over a knowledge graph to generate a pseudo-corpus and use this corpus to train embeddings. However, the effect of the shape of the knowledge graph on the generated pseudo-corpora, and on the resulting word embeddings, has not been studied. To explore this, we use English WordNet, constrained to the taxonomic (tree-like) portion of the graph, as a case study. We investigate the properties of the generated pseudo-corpora, and their impact on the resulting embeddings. We find …

Making Sense Of Crowd-Generated Content In Domain-Specific Settings, Agus Sulistya

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The rapid advances of the Web have changed the ways information is distributed and exchanged among individuals and organizations. Various content from different domains are generated daily and contributed by users' daily activities, such as posting messages in a microblog platform, or collaborating in a question and answer site. To deal with such tremendous volume of user generated content, there is a need for approaches that are able to handle the mass amount of available data and to extract knowledge hidden in the user generated content. This dissertation attempts to make sense of the generated content to help in three …

Evolutionary Trends In The Collaborative Review Process Of A Large Software System, Subhajit Datta, Poulami Sarkar Feb 2019

Evolutionary Trends In The Collaborative Review Process Of A Large Software System, Subhajit Datta, Poulami Sarkar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study the evolutionary trends in the collaborative review process of a large open source software system. As expected, the number of reviews, the number of reviews commented on, as well as the number of reviewers, and the interactions between them show increasing trends over time. But unexpectedly, levels of clustering between developers in their interaction networks show a decreasing trend, even as connections between them increase. In the context of our study, clustering is an indicator of developer collaboration, whereas connection points to how intensely developers work together. Thus the trends we observe can inform how …

Snap Scholar: The User Experience Of Engaging With Academic Research Through A Tappable Stories Medium, Ieva Burk

CMC Senior Theses

With the shift to learn and consume information through our mobile devices, most academic research is still only presented in long-form text. The Stanford Scholar Initiative has explored the segment of content creation and consumption of academic research through video. However, there has been another popular shift in presenting information from various social media platforms and media outlets in the past few years. Snapchat and Instagram have introduced the concept of tappable “Stories” that have gained popularity in the realm of content consumption.

To accelerate the growth of the creation of these research talks, I propose an alternative to video: …

Feasible Form Parameter Design Of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry, Thomas L. Mcculloch Dec 2018

Feasible Form Parameter Design Of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry, Thomas L. Mcculloch

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis introduces a new methodology for robust form parameter design of complex hull form geometry via constraint programming, automatic differentiation, interval arithmetic, and truncated hierarchical B- splines. To date, there has been no clearly stated methodology for assuring consistency of general (equality and inequality) constraints across an entire geometric form parameter ship hull design space. In contrast, the method to be given here can be used to produce guaranteed narrowing of the design space, such that infeasible portions are eliminated. Furthermore, we can guarantee that any set of form parameters generated by our method will be self consistent. It …

Adaptive Parallelism For Coupled, Multithreaded Message-Passing Programs, Samuel K. Gutiérrez Dec 2018

Adaptive Parallelism For Coupled, Multithreaded Message-Passing Programs, Samuel K. Gutiérrez

Computer Science ETDs

Hybrid parallel programming models that combine message passing (MP) and shared- memory multithreading (MT) are becoming more popular, especially with applications requiring higher degrees of parallelism and scalability. Consequently, coupled parallel programs, those built via the integration of independently developed and optimized software libraries linked into a single application, increasingly comprise message-passing libraries with differing preferred degrees of threading, resulting in thread-level heterogeneity. Retroactively matching threading levels between independently developed and maintained libraries is difficult, and the challenge is exacerbated because contemporary middleware services provide only static scheduling policies over entire program executions, necessitating suboptimal, over-subscribed or under-subscribed, configurations. In …

Fogfly: A Traffic Light Optimization Solution Based On Fog Computing, Quang Tran Minh, Chanh Minh Tran, Tuan An Le, Binh Thai Nguyen, Triet Minh Tran, Rajesh Krishna Balan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper provides a fog-based approach to solving the traffic light optimization problem which utilizes the Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) model. ATSC systems demand the ability to strictly reflect real-time traffic state. The proposed fog computing framework, namely FogFly, aligns with this requirement by its natures in location-awareness, low latency and affordability to the changes in traffic conditions. As traffic data is updated timely and processed at fog nodes deployed close to data sources (i.e., vehicles at intersections) traffic light cycles can be optimized efficiently while virtualized resources available at network edges are efficiently utilized. Evaluation results show that …

Mobility-Driven Ble Transmit-Power Adaptation For Participatory Data Muling, Chung-Kyun Han, Archan Misra, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper analyzes a human-centric framework, called SmartABLE, for easy retrieval of the sensor values from pervasively deployed smart objects in a campus-like environment. In this framework, smartphones carried by campus occupants act as data mules, opportunistically retrieving data from nearby BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) equipped smart object sensors and relaying them to a backend repository. We focus specifically on dynamically varying the transmission power of the deployed BLE beacons, so as to extend their operational lifetime without sacrificing the frequency of sensor data retrieval. We propose a memetic algorithm-based power adaptation strategy that can handle deployments of thousands of …

One key aspect of this goal is to identify how the set of metrics …

Automating Intention Mining, Qiao Huang, Xin Xia, David Lo, Gail C. Murphy Oct 2018

Automating Intention Mining, Qiao Huang, Xin Xia, David Lo, Gail C. Murphy

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developers frequently discuss aspects of the systems they are developing online. The comments they post to discussions form a rich information source about the system. Intention mining, a process introduced by Di Sorbo et al., classifies sentences in developer discussions to enable further analysis. As one example of use, intention mining has been used to help build various recommenders for software developers. The technique introduced by Di Sorbo et al. to categorize sentences is based on linguistic patterns derived from two projects. The limited number of data sources used in this earlier work introduces questions about the comprehensiveness of intention …

Enhancing 3d Visual Odometry With Single-Camera Stereo Omnidirectional Systems, Carlos A. Jaramillo Sep 2018

Enhancing 3d Visual Odometry With Single-Camera Stereo Omnidirectional Systems, Carlos A. Jaramillo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We explore low-cost solutions for efficiently improving the 3D pose estimation problem of a single camera moving in an unfamiliar environment. The visual odometry (VO) task -- as it is called when using computer vision to estimate egomotion -- is of particular interest to mobile robots as well as humans with visual impairments. The payload capacity of small robots like micro-aerial vehicles (drones) requires the use of portable perception equipment, which is constrained by size, weight, energy consumption, and processing power. Using a single camera as the passive sensor for the VO task satisfies these requirements, and it motivates the …

Understanding Natural Keyboard Typing Using Convolutional Neural Networks On Mobile Sensor Data, Travis Siems Apr 2018

Understanding Natural Keyboard Typing Using Convolutional Neural Networks On Mobile Sensor Data, Travis Siems

Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Mobile phones and other devices with embedded sensors are becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Audio and motion sensor data may be able to detect information that we did not think possible. Some researchers have created models that can predict computer keyboard typing from a nearby mobile device; however, certain limitations to their experiment setup and methods compelled us to be skeptical of the models’ realistic prediction capability. We investigate the possibility of understanding natural keyboard typing from mobile phones by performing a well-designed data collection experiment that encourages natural typing and interactions. This data collection helps capture realistic vulnerabilities of the security …

Predicting Episodes Of Non-Conformant Mobility In Indoor Environments, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Archan Misra Apr 2018

Predicting Episodes Of Non-Conformant Mobility In Indoor Environments, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional mobility prediction literature focuses primarily on improved methods to extract latent patterns from individual-specific movement data. When such predictions are incorrect, we ascribe it to 'random' or 'unpredictable' changes in a user's movement behavior. Our hypothesis, however, is that such apparently-random deviations from daily movement patterns can, in fact, of ten be anticipated. In particular, we develop a methodology for predicting Likelihood of Future Non-Conformance (LFNC), based on two central hypotheses: (a) the likelihood of future deviations in movement behavior is positively correlated to the intensity of such trajectory deviations observed in the user's recent past, and (b) the …

Feature Engineering For Machine Learning And Data Analytics, Xin Xia, David Lo Apr 2018

Feature Engineering For Machine Learning And Data Analytics, Xin Xia, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This chapter provides an introduction on feature generation and engineering for software analytics. Specifically, we show how domain-specifc features can be designed and used to automate three software engineering tasks: (1) detecting defective software modules (defect prediction), (2) identifying crashing mobile app release (crash release prediction), and (3) predicting who will leave a software team (developer turnover prediction). For each of the three tasks, different sets of features are extracted from a diverse set of software artifacts, and used to build predictive models.

Domain-Specific Cross-Language Relevant Question Retrieval, Bowen Xu, Zhenchang Xing, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li Apr 2018

Domain-Specific Cross-Language Relevant Question Retrieval, Bowen Xu, Zhenchang Xing, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Chinese developers often cannot effectively search questions in English, because they may have difficulties in translating technical words from Chinese to English and formulating proper English queries. For the purpose of helping Chinese developers take advantage of the rich knowledge base of Stack Overflow and simplify the question retrieval process, we propose an automated cross-language relevant question retrieval (CLRQR) system to retrieve relevant English questions for a given Chinese question. CLRQR first extracts essential information (both Chinese and English) from the title and description of the input Chinese question, then performs domain-specific translation of the essential Chinese information into English, …

The Accuracy, Fairness, And Limits Of Predicting Recidivism, Julie Dressel, Hany Farid Jan 2018

The Accuracy, Fairness, And Limits Of Predicting Recidivism, Julie Dressel, Hany Farid

Dartmouth Scholarship

Algorithms for predicting recidivism are commonly used to assess a criminal defendant’s likelihood of committing a crime. These predictions are used in pretrial, parole, and sentencing decisions. Proponents of these systems argue that big data and advanced machine learning make these analyses more accurate and less biased than humans. We show, however, that the widely used commercial risk assessment software COMPAS is no more accurate or fair than predictions made by people with little or no criminal justice expertise. We further show that a simple linear predictor provided with only two features is nearly equivalent to COMPAS with its 137 …

The Application Of Gpu To Molecular Communication Studies, Tobias J. Cain Jan 2018

The Application Of Gpu To Molecular Communication Studies, Tobias J. Cain

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

This thesis applies the recent trends in parallel processing, via graphics processing unit (GPU), to the field of molecular communications (MC), an investigation into communication possibilities of futuristic in vivo nanomachines. Existing MC simulations have not fully accounted for structural boundaries and the associated simulation of a massive number of messenger molecule paths for stochastic evaluation. These molecules are influenced by a Brownian motion as well as the flow of the blood, which is modeled using numerical methods based on the Fokker-Planck stochastic differential equation. By using a GPU these paths can be calculated on a massive scale, both in …

Identifying And Computing The Exact Core-Determining Class, Ye Luo, Hai Wang Jan 2018

Identifying And Computing The Exact Core-Determining Class, Ye Luo, Hai Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The indeterministic relations between unobservable events andobserved outcomes in partially identified models can be characterized bya bipartite graph. Given a probability measure on observed outcomes, theset of feasible probability measures on unobservable events can be definedby a set of linear inequality constraints, according to Artstein’s Theorem. This set of inequalities is called the “core-determining class”. However, thenumber of inequalities defined by Artstein’s Theorem is exponentially increasing with the number of unobservable events, and many inequalitiesmay in fact be redundant. In this paper, we show that the “exact coredetermining class”, i.e., the smallest possible core-determining class, canbe characterized by a set of …

Competency Analytics Tool: Analyzing Curriculum Using Course Competencies, Swapna Gottipati, Venky Shankararaman Jan 2018

Competency Analytics Tool: Analyzing Curriculum Using Course Competencies, Swapna Gottipati, Venky Shankararaman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The applications of learning outcomes and competency frameworks have brought better clarity to engineering programs in many universities. Several frameworks have been proposed to integrate outcomes and competencies into course design, delivery and assessment. However, in many cases, competencies are course-specific and their overall impact on the curriculum design is unknown. Such impact analysis is important for analyzing, discovering gaps and improving the curriculum design. Unfortunately, manual analysis is a painstaking process due to large amounts of competencies across the curriculum. In this paper, we propose an automated method to analyze the competencies and discover their impact on the overall …

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The discovery of useful or worthwhile process models must be performed with due regards to the transformation that needs to be achieved. The blend of the data representations (i.e data mining) and process modelling methods, often allied to the field of Process Mining (PM), has proven to be effective in the process analysis of the event logs readily available in many organisations information systems. Moreover, the Process Discovery has been lately seen as the most important and most visible intellectual challenge related to the process mining. The method involves automatic construction of process models from event logs about any domain …

The tool has also been generalized to take into consideration of temporal genomic information and be flexible for simulation …

A High Quality, Eulerian 3d Fluid Solver In C++, Lejon Anthony Mcgowan Nov 2017

A High Quality, Eulerian 3d Fluid Solver In C++, Lejon Anthony Mcgowan

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Fluids are a part of everyday life, yet are one of the hardest elements to properly render in computer graphics. Water is the most obvious entity when thinking of what a fluid simulation can achieve (and it is indeed the focus of this project), but many other aspects of nature, like fog, clouds, and particle effects. Real-time graphics like video games employ many heuristics to approximate these effects, but large-scale renderers aim to simulate these effects as closely as possible.

In this project, I wish to achieve effects of the latter nature. Using the Eulerian technique of discrete grids, I …

Answerbot: Automated Generation Of Answer Summary To Developers’ Technical Questions, Bowen Xu, Zhenchang Xing, Xin Xia, David Lo Nov 2017

Answerbot: Automated Generation Of Answer Summary To Developers’ Technical Questions, Bowen Xu, Zhenchang Xing, Xin Xia, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The prevalence of questions and answers on domain-specific Q&A sites like Stack Overflow constitutes a core knowledge asset for software engineering domain. Although search engines can return a list of questions relevant to a user query of some technical question, the abundance of relevant posts and the sheer amount of information in them makes it difficult for developers to digest them and find the most needed answers to their questions. In this work, we aim to help developers who want to quickly capture the key points of several answer posts relevant to a technical question before they read the details …

On Negative Results When Using Sentiment Analysis Tools For Software Engineering Research, Robbert Jongeling, Proshanta Sarkar, Subhajit Datta, Alexander Serebrenik

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent years have seen an increasing attention to social aspects of software engineering, including studies of emotions and sentiments experienced and expressed by the software developers. Most of these studies reuse existing sentiment analysis tools such as SentiStrength and NLTK. However, these tools have been trained on product reviews and movie reviews and, therefore, their results might not be applicable in the software engineering domain. In this paper we study whether the sentiment analysis tools agree with the sentiment recognized by human evaluators (as reported in an earlier study) as well as with each other. Furthermore, we evaluate the impact …

Graphh: High Performance Big Graph Analytics In Small Clusters, Peng Sun, Yonggang Wen, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Xiaokui Xiao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

It is common for real-world applications to analyze big graphs using distributed graph processing systems. Popular in-memory systems require an enormous amount of resources to handle big graphs. While several out-of-core approaches have been proposed for processing big graphs on disk, the high disk I/O overhead could significantly reduce performance. In this paper, we propose GraphH to enable highperformance big graph analytics in small clusters. Specifically, we design a two-stage graph partition scheme to evenly divide the input graph into partitions, and propose a GAB (GatherApply-Broadcast) computation model to make each worker process a partition in memory at a time. …
