A Symbolic Model Of Proof Acquisition In Act-R, Beckett Morris, Kerstin Haring May 2026

A Symbolic Model Of Proof Acquisition In Act-R, Beckett Morris, Kerstin Haring

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

Learning to construct mathematical proofs—formal arguments demonstrating the truth of a mathematical statement using logical deductions and previously established facts—is one of the most challenging skills in STEM education. This research aims to build the foundations for a symbolic cognitive model, using the ACT-R cognitive architecture and implementing in Python with the pyactr package, to explore how different proof strategies can be thought through with only symbols and rules. The model observes simple proofs, and its abilities are assessed based on its generalization capabilities, efficiency, and error patterns. By developing and analyzing such a model, this research provides new insights …

Geovig And Purevig: Geometry-Aware Architectures For Efficient Computer Vision, Omar Ismail Jan 2026

Geovig And Purevig: Geometry-Aware Architectures For Efficient Computer Vision, Omar Ismail

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Deploying deep learning models for medical image analysis on mobile devices requires a balance between inference latency, memory footprint, and delineating anatomical boundaries with high accuracy. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and mobile Vision Transformers (ViTs) offer efficiency, they often struggle to model the irregular, non-local geometric structures inherent in biological tissues without incurring prohibitive computational costs. In this thesis, we introduce GeoViG (Geometric Vision Graph), an architecture that bridges the gap between efficient grid-based processing and explicit Geometric Deep Learning. GeoViG introduces a novel transition from high-resolution pixel grids to low-resolution dynamic graphs via a SpreadEdgePool operator, a geometry-aware …

Stability Analysis Of Thermohaline Convection With A Time-Varying Shear Flow Using The Lyapunov Method, Kalin Kochnev Dec 2025

Stability Analysis Of Thermohaline Convection With A Time-Varying Shear Flow Using The Lyapunov Method, Kalin Kochnev

Honors Scholar Theses

This work applies the Lyapunov method to identify instabilities and compute the growth rate of a linear time-varying system. The linear system studied describes cold fresh water on top of hot salty water with a periodically time-varying background shear flow. A time-dependent weighting matrix is employed to construct a Lyapunov function candidate. The resulting linear matrix inequalities are discretized in time using the forward Euler method. As the number of temporal discretization points increases, the growth rate predicted by the Lyapunov method or Floquet theory, used for comparison, will converge to the same value obtained from numerical simulations. Furthermore, the …

Universal Systems Simulation Via Constraint Hypergraphs With Applications To Digital Twins, John Morris Dec 2025

Universal Systems Simulation Via Constraint Hypergraphs With Applications To Digital Twins, John Morris

All Dissertations

The characterization of systems encompasses a variety of modeling frameworks designed to capture specific behaviors and components of various system domains. Whatever the framework, the core elements of a system representation are the information of the system and a description of how that information is related. The relations in deterministic systems are functions, which, when composed to form executable processes, can be used to simulate system data. A declarative modeling framework is one that encodes mechanisms for preparing these simulations within the model structure, allowing an external agent to form the execution processes required for a given context. To date, …

Algebraic Multigrid Methods For Nonsymmetric And Indefinite Problems: Theory And Applications, Ahsan Ali Jul 2025

Algebraic Multigrid Methods For Nonsymmetric And Indefinite Problems: Theory And Applications, Ahsan Ali

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Algebraic multigrid (AMG) is a well-established and highly efficient solver for symmetric positive definite (SPD) systems arising from elliptic and parabolic PDEs, while nonsymmetric systems from hyperbolic PDEs remain a significant challenge. This dissertation develops AMG methods and theory for nonsymmetric problems. First, we develop a novel approach combining mode constraints from energy-minimization AMG with local approximations of ideal restriction in $\ell$AIR, resulting in constrained $\ell$AIR (C$\ell$AIR), which demonstrates scalable convergence across advective and diffusive problems. Second, we extend optimal AMG theory by deriving spectral radius estimates for the two-grid error transfer operator using matrix-induced orthogonality, enabling convergence predictions for …

On The Design Of A Framework For Large-Scale Exploratory Graph Analytics, Oliver Andres Alvarado Rodriguez May 2025

On The Design Of A Framework For Large-Scale Exploratory Graph Analytics, Oliver Andres Alvarado Rodriguez

Dissertations

Large-scale exploratory graph analytics merges data science with high-performance computing to extract critical insights from network-representable data. Data scientists routinely analyze data from the natural, social, and computing sciences by representing it as networks, or graphs, where objects become vertices and their relationships become edges. This representation allows data scientists to add graph analytics to their toolbox. However, designing tools for large-scale exploratory graph analytics is challenging due to the complexities of graph algorithms, such as high communication in distributed systems and large memory demands. These challenges can lead to overly complex software, which limits usability and development to a …

Robust Spacecraft Autonomy For Deep Space Exploration In Special Euclidean Group Se(3), Matthew Wittal Mar 2025

Robust Spacecraft Autonomy For Deep Space Exploration In Special Euclidean Group Se(3), Matthew Wittal

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Over the past half-century, humanity has gained extensive experience conducting manned spaceflight near Earth. Arguably, "near Earth" could even include the Moon — the most distant destination humans have reached. However, "near" in this work primarily refers low Earth orbit (LEO). One could argue that we have not truly left Earth since the Apollo, as spacecraft in some LEOs remain subject to atmospheric drag thus emphasizing their continued connection to Earth's immediate environment. Reflecting on this, it becomes clear that humanity has largely remained bound to Earth’s immediate vicinity since the Apollo missions reached the Moon. However, that is set …

Novel Generative And Language Model Architectures With Applications, Edison Mucllari Jan 2025

Novel Generative And Language Model Architectures With Applications, Edison Mucllari

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

This dissertation investigates novel architectures to address fundamental challenges in machine learning, particularly focusing on transformer models, recurrent neural networks, GAN and continual learning and their applications in natural language processing and computer vision. We propose the Neumann-Cayley Gated Recurrent Unit (NC-GRU), which leverages a Neumann series-based Scaled Cayley transformation to maintain orthogonal weight matrices, effectively mitigating exploding gradients problems while improving long-term memory retention across prediction tasks. We demonstrate the practical applications of NC-GRU by implementing our proposed architecture into an autoencoder to derive neural molecular fingerprints. Building upon these advancements, we turn our attention to the transformer architecture, …

A Bibliographic And Topic Modeling Analysis Of The P-Adic Theory Literature Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, Humberto Llinás, Ismael Gutiérrez, Anselmo Torresblanca, Javier De La Hoz, Brian Llinás

Computer Science Faculty Publications

P-adic analysis, introduced by Kurt Hensel in the early 20th century, has developed into a fundamental area of mathematical research with broad applications in number theory, algebraic geometry, and mathematical physics. This study aims to examine the thematic evolution and scholarly impact of p-adic research through a comprehensive topic modeling and bibliometric analysis. Using classical bibliometric techniques (e.g., performance analysis, co-authorship, and co-citation networks) combined with Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), we analyzed 7388 peer-reviewed documents published between 1965 and 2024. The computational workflow was conducted using R (version 4.4.1) and VOSviewer (version 1.6.20), which enabled the identification of 20 distinct …

Calculation And Statistical Analysis Of Wins Above Replacement, Joshua Taylor Dec 2024

Calculation And Statistical Analysis Of Wins Above Replacement, Joshua Taylor

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The Wins Above Replacement (WAR) statistic in Major League Baseball is a prominent metric used to estimate player value by quantifying all aspects of play in terms of wins added to a baseball team. We will use R to calculate WAR for all players from 1871 to 2012 and use data from those years to construct multivariate predictive models to attempt to estimate WAR for players from 2013 to 2024. We find strong correlations between predicted and actual WAR values for most models, with the exception of the polynomial predictive model for non-qualified pitchers.

Parallel Multigrid In Time For Chaotic Dynamical Systems, David Alan Vargas Jul 2024

Parallel Multigrid In Time For Chaotic Dynamical Systems, David Alan Vargas

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Despite the fact that Parallel-in-Time (PinT) methods are predicted to become necessary to fully utilize next-generation exa- and zettascale machines, there are currently no known practical methods which scale well with the length of the time-domain for chaotic problems, due to exponential dependence of the condition number on the fastest chaotic timescale. I present modifications to the coarse-grid equations along with a novel rediscretization approach which together greatly improve convergence of the multigrid reduction in time (MGRIT) algorithm and allow the first known PinT speedup for a chaotic PDE. The novel Local Shadowing Relaxation (LSR) is presented as an alternative …

Finding Combinatorial Patterns In Real Valued Omics Data, Kenneth Smith Apr 2024

Finding Combinatorial Patterns In Real Valued Omics Data, Kenneth Smith

Dissertations

Precision medicine is a healthcare approach which tailors disease prevention and treatment to an individual, based on their genetics, environment, lifestyle, and physiological state. These factors interact to produce biological changes that can be measured to produce data called omics, and include genomics, lipidomics, and proteomics. Despite the abundance of omics data and analysis techniques, researchers still struggle to identify biological findings that replicate across data sets and translate into clinical applications. In this dissertation, we employ combinatorial optimization techniques to improve upon three steps in the precision medicine analysis pipeline: 1) data cleaning, 2) community detection, and 3) feature …

Mathematically Rigorous Deep Learning Paradigms For Data-Driven Scientific Modeling, Owen Nicholas Davis Apr 2024

Mathematically Rigorous Deep Learning Paradigms For Data-Driven Scientific Modeling, Owen Nicholas Davis

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This dissertation explores the crucial role of data-driven modeling in science and engineering, with a focus on developing surrogate models to accelerate large-scale computational tasks, aiding in both outer-loop functions like uncertainty quantification and expensive inner-loop tasks within broader computational frameworks. Challenges arise with increased problem dimension and sparse, noisy training data, particularly significant when constructing surrogates for very expensive computational models where acquiring sufficient high-fidelity training data is unfeasible. In such scenarios, training surrogates from an ensemble of multifidelity information sources of varying accuracy and cost becomes essential. We emphasize neural network-based modeling paradigms, which are flexible in integrating …

The Computational Search For Unidentified Central Configurations Of The Newtonian N-Body Problem, Hannah G. Havel Jan 2024

The Computational Search For Unidentified Central Configurations Of The Newtonian N-Body Problem, Hannah G. Havel

CURE Proceedings

The N-body problem is a field of study in mathematics and physics that involves predicting the motion of particles moving under their mutual gravitational attraction. It is vital in celestial mechanics, such as planning collision-free satellite orbit trajectories. When beginning to understand the N-body problem, we can start by looking at equal masses of these particles or celestial bodies. As particles move, their position and velocity change, both energy and angular momentum are conserved. Sets of constant energy and angular momentum, known as integral manifolds, are higher-dimensional figures that represent constraints of movement to a system. Integral manifolds are described …

Starting from consumer cars, a dedicated effort is being made to translate this into commercial vehicles for freight and delivery. This research introduces a novel adaptive Nawaz, Enscore, Ham (NEH) algorithm with constrained nearest neighbor subtour (NEH-NN). This algorithm is tested on the standard benchmark problems in literature and used as a seed solution for the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The performance and …

On Dyadic Parity Check Codes And Their Generalizations, Meraiah Martinez Dec 2023

On Dyadic Parity Check Codes And Their Generalizations, Meraiah Martinez

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In order to communicate information over a noisy channel, error-correcting codes can be used to ensure that small errors don’t prevent the transmission of a message. One family of codes that has been found to have good properties is low-density parity check (LDPC) codes. These are represented by sparse bipartite graphs and have low complexity graph-based decoding algorithms. Various graphical properties, such as the girth and stopping sets, influence when these algorithms might fail. Additionally, codes based on algebraically structured parity check matrices are desirable in applications due to their compact representations, practical implementation advantages, and tractable decoder performance analysis. …

Reducing Uncertainty In Sea-Level Rise Prediction: A Spatial-Variability-Aware Approach, Subhankar Ghosh, Shuai An, Arun Sharma, Jayant Gupta, Shashi Shekhar, Aneesh Subramanian

I-GUIDE Forum

Given multi-model ensemble climate projections, the goal is to accurately and reliably predict future sea-level rise while lowering the uncertainty. This problem is important because sea-level rise affects millions of people in coastal communities and beyond due to climate change's impacts on polar ice sheets and the ocean. This problem is challenging due to spatial variability and unknowns such as possible tipping points (e.g., collapse of Greenland or West Antarctic ice-shelf), climate feedback loops (e.g., clouds, permafrost thawing), future policy decisions, and human actions. Most existing climate modeling approaches use the same set of weights globally, during either regression or …

Utilizing Graph Thickness Heuristics On The Earth-Moon Problem, Robert C. Weaver Sep 2023

Utilizing Graph Thickness Heuristics On The Earth-Moon Problem, Robert C. Weaver

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

This paper utilizes heuristic algorithms for determining graph thickness in order to attempt to find a 10-chromatic thickness-2 graph. Doing so would eliminate 9 colors as a potential solution to the Earth-moon Problem. An empirical analysis of the algorithms made by the author are provided. Additionally, the paper lists various graphs that may or nearly have a thickness of 2, which may be solutions if one can find two planar subgraphs that partition all of the graph’s edges.

Machine Learning-Based Data And Model Driven Bayesian Uncertanity Quantification Of Inverse Problems For Suspended Non-Structural System, Zhiyuan Qin May 2023

Machine Learning-Based Data And Model Driven Bayesian Uncertanity Quantification Of Inverse Problems For Suspended Non-Structural System, Zhiyuan Qin

All Dissertations

Inverse problems involve extracting the internal structure of a physical system from noisy measurement data. In many fields, the Bayesian inference is used to address the ill-conditioned nature of the inverse problem by incorporating prior information through an initial distribution. In the nonparametric Bayesian framework, surrogate models such as Gaussian Processes or Deep Neural Networks are used as flexible and effective probabilistic modeling tools to overcome the high-dimensional curse and reduce computational costs. In practical systems and computer models, uncertainties can be addressed through parameter calibration, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty quantification, leading to improved reliability and robustness of decision and …

A Graphical User Interface Using Spatiotemporal Interpolation To Determine Fine Particulate Matter Values In The United States, Kelly M. Entrekin Apr 2023

A Graphical User Interface Using Spatiotemporal Interpolation To Determine Fine Particulate Matter Values In The United States, Kelly M. Entrekin

Honors College Theses

Fine particulate matter or PM2.5 can be described as a pollution particle that has a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller. These pollution particle values are measured by monitoring sites installed across the United States throughout the year. While these values are helpful, a lot of areas are not accounted for as scientists are not able to measure all of the United States. Some of these unmeasured regions could be reaching high PM2.5 values over time without being aware of it. These high values can be dangerous by causing or worsening health conditions, such as cardiovascular and lung diseases. Within …

The Power Of Supercomputing Applied To Fractal Image Generation, Charlin Me Duff Jan 2023

The Power Of Supercomputing Applied To Fractal Image Generation, Charlin Me Duff

Mathematics Senior Capstones

This project looks into how parallelism benefits the runtime of generating large fractal images. First, it explains what the Julia and Mandelbrot Sets are, who discovered them, and how they are calculated. Following that is an introduction to supercomputers, parallel computing, and Cal Poly Humboldt’s very own supercomputer. Once groundwork is laid, I explain my process of adapting a fractal image generation program from serial computing to different levels of parallelism. After that, is an analysis of the effects of levels of parallelism on the runtime of large fractal image generation. This paper concludes with a reflection on the project …

Novel Architectures And Optimization Algorithms For Training Neural Networks And Applications, Vasily I. Zadorozhnyy Jan 2023

Novel Architectures And Optimization Algorithms For Training Neural Networks And Applications, Vasily I. Zadorozhnyy

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

The two main areas of Deep Learning are Unsupervised and Supervised Learning. Unsupervised Learning studies a class of data processing problems in which only descriptions of objects are known, without label information. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have become among the most widely used unsupervised neural net models. GAN combines two neural nets, generative and discriminative, that work simultaneously. We introduce a new family of discriminator loss functions that adopts a weighted sum of real and fake parts, which we call adaptive weighted loss functions. Using the gradient information, we can adaptively choose weights to train a discriminator in the direction …

It has significance to many areas of science, including physics and computer science, and is crucial in understanding how the universe works. In fact, it was a primary motivation for Newton's development of calculus. An important application of the N-body problem is within celestial mechanics and involves how planets and other celestial bodies move with mutual gravitational attraction. It is important in developing how satellites behave in space using complicated …

Modeling Repairable System Failure Data Using Nhpp Reliability Growth Mode., Eunice Ofori-Addo Jan 2023

Modeling Repairable System Failure Data Using Nhpp Reliability Growth Mode., Eunice Ofori-Addo

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Stochastic point processes have been widely used to describe the behaviour of repairable systems. The Crow nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) often known as the Power Law model is regarded as one of the best models for repairable systems. The goodness-of-fit test rejects the intensity function of the power law model, and so the log-linear model was fitted and tested for goodness-of-fit. The Weibull Time to Failure recurrent neural network (WTTE-RNN) framework, a probabilistic deep learning model for failure data, is also explored. However, we find that the WTTE-RNN framework is only appropriate failure data with independent and identically distributed interarrival …

Machine Learning To Predict Warhead Fragmentation In-Flight Behavior From Static Data, Katharine Larsen Oct 2022

Machine Learning To Predict Warhead Fragmentation In-Flight Behavior From Static Data, Katharine Larsen

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Accurate characterization of fragment fly-out properties from high-speed warhead detonations is essential for estimation of collateral damage and lethality for a given weapon. Real warhead dynamic detonation tests are rare, costly, and often unrealizable with current technology, leaving fragmentation experiments limited to static arena tests and numerical simulations. Stereoscopic imaging techniques can now provide static arena tests with time-dependent tracks of individual fragments, each with characteristics such as fragment IDs and their respective position vector. Simulation methods can account for the dynamic case but can exclude relevant dynamics experienced in real-life warhead detonations. This research leverages machine learning methodologies to …
