Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Pedestrian detection is an initial step to perform outdoor scene analysis, which plays an essential role in many real-world applications. Although having enjoyed the merits of deep learning frameworks from the generic object detectors, pedestrian detection is still a very challenging task due to heavy occlusions, and highly crowded group. Generally, the conventional detectors are unable to differentiate individuals from each other effectively under such a dense environment. To tackle this critical problem, we propose an attribute-aware pedestrian detector to explicitly model people's semantic attributes in a high-level feature detection fashion. Besides the typical semantic features, center position, target's scale, …

Personality inference has received widespread attention for its potential to infer psychological well being, job satisfaction, romantic relationship success, and professional performance. In this research, we focus on Conscientiousness, one of the well studied Big Five personality traits, which determines if a person is self-disciplined, organized, and hard-working. Research has shown that Conscientiousness is related to a person's academic and workplace success. For an expert to evaluate a person's Conscientiousness, long-term observation of the person's behavior at work place or at home is usually required. To reduce this evaluation effort as well as to cope with the increasing trend of …

The Role Of Information And Knowledge Of Weather Warnings In Marine Access Behavior : A Field Experiment In Coastal Area Of Bangladesh, Khan Mehedi Hasan

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

The world’s largest mangrove forest named Sundarban is located in the Bay of Bengal. Due to richness of aqua and forest resources, the coastal community of Khulna district of Bangladesh immensely depends on the forest for income and livelihoods, all the year round. For extracting resources, thousands of people enter into the forest by crossing river, generally with small boats. The region faces various natural disasters repeatedly. Each year about 13-14 cyclones are formed in the Bay of Bengal, which are threats for coastal households. Those hazards bear more risk for marine entrants. Analyzing coastal households’ marine access for two …

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

With the rapid growth of smart devices and technological advancements in tracking geospatial data, the demand for Location-Based Services (LBS) is facing a constant rise in several domains, including military, healthcare and transportation. It is a natural step to migrate LBS to a cloud environment to achieve on-demand scalability and increased resiliency. Nonetheless, outsourcing sensitive location data to a third-party cloud provider raises a host of privacy concerns as the data owners have reduced visibility and control over the outsourced data. In this paper, we consider outsourced LBS where users want to retrieve map directions without disclosing their location information. …

General-purpose topic models have widespread industrial applications. Yet high-quality topic modeling is becoming increasingly challenging because accurate models require large amounts of training data typically owned by multiple parties, who are often unwilling to share their sensitive data for collaborative training without guarantees on their data privacy. To enable effective privacy-preserving multiparty topic modeling, we propose a novel federated general-purpose topic model named private and consistent topic discovery (PC-TD). On the one hand, PC-TD seamlessly integrates differential privacy in topic modeling to provide privacy guarantees on sensitive data of different parties. On the other hand, PC-TD exploits multiple sources of …

Co2vec: Embeddings Of Co-Ordered Networks Based On Mutual Reinforcement, Meng-Fen Chiang, Ee-Peng Lim, Wang-Chien Lee, Philips Kokoh Prasetyo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study the problem of representation learning for multiple types of entities in a co-ordered network where order relations exist among entities of the same type, and association relations exist across entities of different types. The key challenge in learning co-ordered network embedding is to preserve order relations among entities of the same type while leveraging on the general consistency in order relations between different entity types. In this paper, we propose an embedding model, CO2Vec, that addresses this challenge using mutually reinforced order dependencies. Specifically, CO2Vec explores in-direct order dependencies as supplementary evidence to enhance order representation learning across …

Snow-Albedo Feedback In Northern Alaska: How Vegetation Influences Snowmelt, Lucas C. Reckhaus

Theses and Dissertations

This paper investigates how the snow-albedo feedback mechanism of the arctic is changing in response to rising climate temperatures. Specifically, the interplay of vegetation and snowmelt, and how these two variables can be correlated. This has the potential to refine climate modelling of the spring transition season. Research was conducted at the ecoregion scale in northern Alaska from 2000 to 2020. Each ecoregion is defined by distinct topographic and ecological conditions, allowing for meaningful contrast between the patterns of spring albedo transition across surface conditions and vegetation types. The five most northerly ecoregions of Alaska are chosen as they encompass …

Using High-Performance Computing Profilers To Understand The Performance Of Graph Algorithms, Costain Nachuma

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

An algorithm designer working with parallel computing systems should know how the characteristics of their implemented algorithm affects various performance aspects of their parallel program. It would be beneficial to these designers if each algorithm came with a specific set of standards that identified which algorithms worked better for a specified system. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to take implementations of four graphing algorithms, extract their features such as memory consumption, scalability using profilers (Vtunes /Tau) to determine which algorithms work to their fullest potential in one of the three systems: GPU, shared memory system, or distributed memory …

The amount of data in our society has been exploding in the era of big data. This article aims to address several open challenges in big data stream classification. Many existing studies in data mining literature follow the batch learning setting, which suffers from low efficiency and poor scalability. To tackle these challenges, we investigate a unified online learning framework for the big data stream classification task. Different from the existing online data stream classification techniques, we propose a unified Sparse Online Classification (SOC) framework. Based on SOC, we derive a second-order online learning algorithm and a cost-sensitive sparse online …

Accelerating Exact Constrained Shortest Paths On Gpus, Shengliang Lu, Bingsheng He, Yuchen Li, Hao Fu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The recently emerging applications such as software-defined networks and autonomous vehicles require efficient and exact solutions for constrained shortest paths (CSP), which finds the shortest path in a graph while satisfying some user-defined constraints. Compared with the common shortest path problems without constraints, CSP queries have a significantly larger number of subproblems. The most widely used labeling algorithm becomes prohibitively slow and impractical. Other existing approaches tend to find approximate solutions and build costly indices on graphs for fast query processing, which are not suitable for emerging applications with the requirement of exact solutions. A natural question is whether and …

A Systematic Density-Based Clustering Method Using Anchor Points, Yizhang Wang, Di Wang, Wei Pang, Ah-Hwee Tan, You Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Clustering is an important unsupervised learning method in machine learning and data mining. Many existing clustering methods may still face the challenge in self-identifying clusters with varying shapes, sizes and densities. To devise a more generic clustering method that considers all the aforementioned properties of the natural clusters, we propose a novel clustering algorithm named Anchor Points based Clustering (APC). The anchor points in APC are characterized by having a relatively large distance from data points with higher densities. We take anchor points as centers to obtain intermediate clusters, which can divide the whole dataset more appropriately so as to …

As students progress in their university programs, they have to face many course choices. It is important for them to receive guidance based on not only their interest, but also the "predicted" course performance so as to improve learning experience and optimise academic performance. In this paper, we propose the next-term grade prediction task as a useful course selection guidance. We propose a machine learning framework to predict course grades in a specific program term using the historical student-course data. In this framework, we develop the prediction model using Factorization Machine (FM) and Long Short Term Memory combined with FM …

Gpu-Accelerated Subgraph Enumeration On Partitioned Graphs, Wentian Guo, Yuchen Li, Mo Sha, Bingsheng He, Xiaokui Xiao, Kian-Lee Tan Jun 2020

Gpu-Accelerated Subgraph Enumeration On Partitioned Graphs, Wentian Guo, Yuchen Li, Mo Sha, Bingsheng He, Xiaokui Xiao, Kian-Lee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Subgraph enumeration is important for many applications such as network motif discovery and community detection. Recent works utilize graphics processing units (GPUs) to parallelize subgraph enumeration, but they can only handle graphs that fit into the GPU memory. In this paper, we propose a new approach for GPU-accelerated subgraph enumeration that can efficiently scale to large graphs beyond the GPU memory. Our approach divides the graph into partitions, each of which fits into the GPU memory. The GPU processes one partition at a time and searches the matched subgraphs of a given pattern (i.e., instances) within the partition as in …

Adaptive Loss-Aware Quantization For Multi-Bit Networks, Zhongnan Qu, Zimu Zhou, Yun Cheng, Lothar Thiele Jun 2020

Adaptive Loss-Aware Quantization For Multi-Bit Networks, Zhongnan Qu, Zimu Zhou, Yun Cheng, Lothar Thiele

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We investigate the compression of deep neural networks by quantizing their weights and activations into multiple binary bases, known as multi-bit networks (MBNs), which accelerate the inference and reduce the storage for the deployment on low-resource mobile and embedded platforms. We propose Adaptive Loss-aware Quantization (ALQ), a new MBN quantization pipeline that is able to achieve an average bitwidth below one-bit without notable loss in inference accuracy. Unlike previous MBN quantization solutions that train a quantizer by minimizing the error to reconstruct full precision weights, ALQ directly minimizes the quantizationinduced error on the loss function involving neither gradient approximation nor …

Predicting Disease Progression Using Deep Recurrent Neural Networks And Longitudinal Electronic Health Record Data, Seunghwan Kim May 2020

Predicting Disease Progression Using Deep Recurrent Neural Networks And Longitudinal Electronic Health Record Data, Seunghwan Kim

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Electronic Health Records (EHR) are widely adopted and used throughout healthcare systems and are able to collect and store longitudinal information data that can be used to describe patient phenotypes. From the underlying data structures used in the EHR, discrete data can be extracted and analyzed to improve patient care and outcomes via tasks such as risk stratification and prospective disease management. Temporality in EHR is innately present given the nature of these data, however, and traditional classification models are limited in this context by the cross-sectional nature of training and prediction processes. Finding temporal patterns in EHR is especially …

Storage Management Strategy In Mobile Phones For Photo Crowdsensing, En Wang, Zhengdao Qu, Xinyao Liang, Xiangyu Meng, Yongjian Yang, Dawei Li, Weibin Meng

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In mobile crowdsensing, some users jointly finish a sensing task through the sensors equipped in their intelligent terminals. In particular, the photo crowdsensing based on Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) collects pictures for some specific targets or events and uploads them to nearby edge servers, which leads to richer data content and more efficient data storage compared with the common mobile crowdsensing; hence, it has attracted an important amount of attention recently. However, the mobile users prefer uploading the photos through Wifi APs (PoIs) rather than cellular networks. Therefore, photos stored in mobile phones are exchanged among users, in order to …

Are These Comments Triggering? Predicting Triggers Of Toxicity In Online Discussions, Hind Almerekhi, Haewoon Kwak, Joni Salminen, Bernard J. Jansen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Understanding the causes or triggers of toxicity adds a new dimension to the prevention of toxic behavior in online discussions. In this research, we define toxicity triggers in online discussions as a non-toxic comment that lead to toxic replies. Then, we build a neural network-based prediction model for toxicity trigger. The prediction model incorporates text-based features and derived features from previous studies that pertain to shifts in sentiment, topic flow, and discussion context. Our findings show that triggers of toxicity contain identifiable features and that incorporating shift features with the discussion context can be detected with a ROC-AUC score of …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Background: Although low oxygen saturations are generally regarded as deleterious, recent studies in ICU patients have shown that a liberal oxygen strategy increases mortality. However, the optimal oxygen saturation target remains unclear. The goal of this study was to determine the optimal range by using real-world data. Methods: Replicate retrospective analyses were conducted of two electronic medical record databases: the eICU Collaborative Research Database (eICU-CRD) and the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III database (MIMIC). Only patients with at least 48 h of oxygen therapy were included. Nonlinear regression was used to analyze the association between median pulse oximetry-derived …

Multi-Level Head-Wise Match And Aggregation In Transformer For Textual Sequence Matching, Shuohang Wang, Yunshi Lan, Yi Tay, Jing Jiang, Jingjing Liu Feb 2020

Multi-Level Head-Wise Match And Aggregation In Transformer For Textual Sequence Matching, Shuohang Wang, Yunshi Lan, Yi Tay, Jing Jiang, Jingjing Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Transformer has been successfully applied to many natural language processing tasks. However, for textual sequence matching, simple matching between the representation of a pair of sequences might bring in unnecessary noise. In this paper, we propose a new approach to sequence pair matching with Transformer, by learning head-wise matching representations on multiple levels. Experiments show that our proposed approach can achieve new state-of-the-art performance on multiple tasks that rely only on pre-computed sequence-vectorrepresentation, such as SNLI, MNLI-match, MNLI-mismatch, QQP, and SQuAD-binary

Interpretable Rumor Detection In Microblogs By Attending To User Interactions, Ling Min Serena Khoo, Hai Leong Chieu, Zhong Qian, Jing Jiang Feb 2020

Interpretable Rumor Detection In Microblogs By Attending To User Interactions, Ling Min Serena Khoo, Hai Leong Chieu, Zhong Qian, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address rumor detection by learning to differentiate between the community’s response to real and fake claims in microblogs. Existing state-of-the-art models are based on tree models that model conversational trees. However, in social media, a user posting a reply might be replying to the entire thread rather than to a specific user. We propose a post-level attention model (PLAN) to model long distance interactions between tweets with the multi-head attention mechanism in a transformer network. We investigated variants of this model: (1) a structure aware self-attention model (StA-PLAN) that incorporates tree structure information in the transformer network, and (2) …

Entity-Sensitive Attention And Fusion Network For Entity-Level Multimodal Sentiment Classification, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang Jan 2020

Entity-Sensitive Attention And Fusion Network For Entity-Level Multimodal Sentiment Classification, Jianfei Yu, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Entity-level (aka target-dependent) sentiment analysis of social media posts has recently attracted increasing attention, and its goal is to predict the sentiment orientations over individual target entities mentioned in users' posts. Most existing approaches to this task primarily rely on the textual content, but fail to consider the other important data sources (e.g., images, videos, and user profiles), which can potentially enhance these text-based approaches. Motivated by the observation, we study entity-level multimodal sentiment classification in this article, and aim to explore the usefulness of images for entity-level sentiment detection in social media posts. Specifically, we propose an Entity-Sensitive Attention …

Teacher-Student Networks With Multiple Decoders For Solving Math Word Problem, Jipeng Zhang, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Ee-Peng Lim, Wei Qin, Lei Wang, Jie Shao, Qianru Sun Jan 2020

Teacher-Student Networks With Multiple Decoders For Solving Math Word Problem, Jipeng Zhang, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Ee-Peng Lim, Wei Qin, Lei Wang, Jie Shao, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Math word problem (MWP) is challenging due to the limitation in training data where only one “standard” solution is available. MWP models often simply fit this solution rather than truly understand or solve the problem. The generalization of models (to diverse word scenarios) is thus limited. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel approach, TSN-MD, by leveraging the teacher network to integrate the knowledge of equivalent solution expressions and then to regularize the learning behavior of the student network. In addition, we introduce the multiple-decoder student network to generate multiple candidate solution expressions by which the final answer …

Sentiment Analysis, Quantification, And Shift Detection, Kevin Labille Dec 2019

Sentiment Analysis, Quantification, And Shift Detection, Kevin Labille

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on event detection within streams of Tweets based on sentiment quantification. Sentiment quantification extends sentiment analysis, the analysis of the sentiment of individual documents, to analyze the sentiment of an aggregated collection of documents. Although the former has been widely researched, the latter has drawn less attention but offers greater potential to enhance current business intelligence systems. Indeed, knowing the proportion of positive and negative Tweets is much more valuable than knowing which individual Tweets are positive or negative. We also extend our sentiment quantification research to analyze the evolution of sentiment over time to automatically detect …
