Opencil: Benchmarking Out-Of-Distribution Detection In Class Incremental Learning, Wenjun Miao, Guansong Pang, Trong-Tung Nguyen, Ruohuan Fang, Jin Zheng, Xiao Bai
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Class incremental learning (CIL) aims to learn a model that can not only incrementally accommodate new classes, but also maintain the learned knowledge of old classes. Out-of-distribution (OOD) detection in CIL is to retain this incremental learning ability, while being able to reject unknown samples that are drawn from different distributions of the learned classes. This capability is crucial to the safety of deploying CIL models in open worlds. However, despite remarkable advancements in the respective CIL and OOD detection, there lacks a systematic and large-scale benchmark to assess the capability of advanced CIL models in detecting OOD samples. To …
Toward Efficient And Scalable Scientific Data Management Through Quality-Oriented Data Compression, Pu Jiao
Toward Efficient And Scalable Scientific Data Management Through Quality-Oriented Data Compression, Pu Jiao
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Scientific simulations and instruments now produce data at rates that overwhelm the storage, memory, and network subsystems of modern high-performance computing (HPC) facilities. Error-bounded lossy compression reduces data movement costs while bounding reconstruction error, yet three barriers limit its adoption in mission-critical workflows: existing compressors cannot guarantee the accuracy of domain-specific quantities of interest (QoIs) derived from compressed data; compression-induced artifacts such as posterization, blocking, and interpolation banding erode user confidence in decompressed fields; and significant compressibility in the quantization index arrays of interpolation-based pipelines remains unexploited. This dissertation addresses all three barriers through four contributions, with the artifact barrier …

Universal Systems Simulation Via Constraint Hypergraphs With Applications To Digital Twins, John Morris
Universal Systems Simulation Via Constraint Hypergraphs With Applications To Digital Twins, John Morris
All Dissertations
The characterization of systems encompasses a variety of modeling frameworks designed to capture specific behaviors and components of various system domains. Whatever the framework, the core elements of a system representation are the information of the system and a description of how that information is related. The relations in deterministic systems are functions, which, when composed to form executable processes, can be used to simulate system data. A declarative modeling framework is one that encodes mechanisms for preparing these simulations within the model structure, allowing an external agent to form the execution processes required for a given context. To date, …

Topic Modeling And Culturomic Analysis Of 30,000 Books Over 100 Years Using Gensim, Michael A. Freeman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the cultural influence of historical events on English-language fiction published between 1820 and 1929. Using a corpus of 30,256 digitized books from Project Gutenberg, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling was applied to identify recurring themes across eleven decades. The study sought to determine whether historically significant events could be detected within fictional narratives. One clear instance emerged: Napoleon Bonaparte and the Napoleonic Wars appeared explicitly in the 1820s corpus. Beyond this, several thematic patterns were observed—such as maritime language in the 1840s, national identity in the 1880s, and youth-oriented dialogue in the early 20th century—that plausibly …

Impact Of Original Versus Reposted Social Endorsements On Content Consumption: The Moderating Role Of Endorsers’ Network Characteristics, Anqi Zhao, Qian Tang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Social endorsements broadcast endorsers’ positive attitudes toward content or products, especially to their social ties. Original endorsements created by endorsers can be propagated further as reposted endorsements. Both are important marketing tools to increase content consumption, yet their differences are unclear. This study compares the impacts of original and reposted endorsements on content consumption and their contingencies on the endorsers’ network characteristics. Using data on social endorsements of YouTube videos on Twitter, we find that original endorsements (i.e., original tweets) significantly boost content consumption, and the effect is positively moderated by the endorsers’ network size but not their tie strength. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Users often navigate multiple platforms online, each characterized by its own set of scarce data. Recommender systems face a significant challenge in such fragmented environments. This paper proposes a novel approach to enhance recommendation systems by leveraging connections across distinct yet conceptually similar datasets from multiple platforms. We introduce a unique scenario of dual-target overlapping-free cross-platform recommendation, presenting a bridging mechanism to mutually improve across platforms and learn latent user preferences. Our approach addresses the data sparsity prevalent in each platform and enhances recommendation quality by harnessing redundant, rich, and similar domain data. Experiments validate the effectiveness of our method, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Physics-informed deep learning is a methodology in artificial intelligence aimed at combating the large training data requirement and the barrier of domain awareness that deep learning architectures commonly face in applications. Stochastic modeling integrated into the predictive models provides that domain knowledge. Variations of the Intelligent Driving Model impact the learning behaviors of the joint-training architecture. This thesis examines the effect of substituting the standard linear Intelligent Driving Model with a modified nonlinear version, as applied to real human driving behavior on the I-80 interstate. The experimentation also critically evaluates the complications that impede the viability of this architecture in …

Environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors have become key nonfinancial factors for investors to evaluate companies with respect to understanding material risks and growth opportunities. While not mandatory, companies are providing ESG reports that outline progress in different ESG metrics (six broad metrics and 15 specific ones). Client advisers (CAs) read these reports to identify key metrics of interest to investors. Given the number of companies and investment products, however, it is not feasible for CAs to read all the reports, which can sometimes run into tens or hundreds of pages). The authors have developed multiple frameworks building on leading …

Background: Diabetic heart failure (DHF) is defined as a chronic and progressive disease which is associated with both diabetes and heart failure (HF). Even though there have been many developments in the knowledge of these diseases, there is still much to learn about the genetic crossovers between the two. In this study, we identified genes that are associated with diabetic heart failure and heart failure by using gene expression data from patients with DHF, HF, and a control group of patients who died of natural causes. We sought to identify genes that had altered expression levels which could possibly play …

Application Of Graph Neural Networks With Phase Space Graphs, Parker H. Cole, Ryan Benton, Ralf Riedel, David Bourrie
Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters
Non-linear phase-space analysis models data represented as a graph transitioning between states in the time domain. By studying data transitions, we can predict the time a particular behavior occurs and classify the events (states) in a system. For example, we could classify neurological sensor data to determine if a person is asleep (state), or predict the direction in which a stock will move (transitions) based on micro trade patterns.
Previous research has demonstrated success in phase-space graphs in classifying malware, detecting network intrusions, and predicting seizures. However, the solutions either require calculating global graph features as inputs to a classifier, …

In-Season Nitrogen Mmanagement: Leveraging Data Visualization For Precision Agriculture, Chathurika Harshani Narayana
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Effective nitrogen management is vital for sustainable agriculture, impacting both crop yield and environmental health. Traditional methods often use fixed application rates set before planting, which do not adapt to changing crop needs during the season. This can lead to over- or under-application, reducing efficiency and sustainability. While modern tools like sensors, satellites, and UAVs provide valuable real-time data on crop and field conditions, integrating and using this data to guide timely nitrogen decisions remains a major challenge. In-season nitrogen management offers a solution by allowing for dynamic adjustments to nitrogen applications, addressing crop needs as they arise. This approach …

Your Cursor Reveals: On Analyzing Workers’ Browsing Behavior And Annotation Quality In Crowdsourcing Tasks, Pei-Chi Lo, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this work, we investigate the connection between browsing behavior and task quality of crowdsourcing workers performing annotation tasks that require information judgements. Such information judgements are often required to derive ground truth answers to information retrieval queries. We explore the use of workers’ browsing behavior to directly determine their annotation result quality. We hypothesize user attention to be the main factor contributing to a worker’s annotation quality. To predict annotation quality at the task level, we model two aspects of task-specific user attention, also known as general and semantic user attentions . Both aspects of user attention can be …

Improving Conversational Recommender System Via Contextual And Time-Aware Modeling With Less Domain-Specific Knowledge, Lingzhi Wang, Shafiq Joty, Wei Gao, Xingshan Zeng, Kam-Fai Wong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Conversational Recommender Systems (CRS) has become an emerging research topic seeking to perform recommendations through interactive conversations, which generally consist of generation and recommendation modules. Prior work on CRS tends to incorporate more external and domain-specific knowledge like item reviews to enhance performance. Despite the fact that the collection and annotation of the external domain-specific information needs much human effort and degenerates the generalizability, too much extra knowledge introduces more difficulty to balance among them. Therefore, we propose to fully discover and extract the internal knowledge from the context. We capture both entity-level and contextual-level representations to jointly model user …

Does Ceo Agreeableness Personality Mitigate Real Earnings Management?, Shan Liu, Xingying Wu, Nan Hu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Despite efforts to mitigate aggressive financial reporting, earnings management remains challenging to parties interested in inhibiting its dysfunctional effects. Using linguistic algorithms to assess CEO agreeableness personality from their unscripted texts in conference calls, we find that it is a determinant that mitigates a firm's real earnings management. Furthermore, such an effect is more pronounced when firms confront intensive market competition and financial distress and have weaker managerial entrenchment or when CEOs face stronger internal governance. Our findings persist even after we utilize several alternative real earnings management metrics and control other confounding personalities in prior earnings management studies. The …

Graphs can model complicated interactions between entities, which naturally emerge in many important applications. These applications can often be cast into standard graph learning tasks, in which a crucial step is to learn low-dimensional graph representations. Graph neural networks (GNNs) are currently the most popular model in graph embedding approaches. However, standard GNNs in the neighborhood aggregation paradigm suffer from limited discriminative power in distinguishing high-order graph structures as opposed to low-order structures. To capture high-order structures, researchers have resorted to motifs and developed motif-based GNNs. However, the existing motif-based GNNs still often suffer from less discriminative power on high-order …

Graph label propagation (LP) is a core component in many downstream applications such as fraud detection, recommendation and image segmentation. In this paper, we propose GLP, a GPU-based framework to enable efficient LP processing on large-scale graphs. By investigating the data processing pipeline in a large e-commerce platform, we have identified two key challenges on integrating GPU-accelerated LP processing to the pipeline: (1) programmability for evolving application logics; (2) demand for real-time performance. Motivated by these challenges, we offer a set of expressive APIs that data engineers can customize and deploy efficient LP algorithms on GPUs with ease. To achieve …

With the rising awareness of data assets, data governance, which is to understand where data comes from, how it is collected, and how it is used, has been assuming evergrowing importance. One critical component of data governance gaining increasing attention is auditing machine learning models to determine if specific data has been used for training. Existing auditing techniques, like shadow auditing methods, have shown feasibility under specific conditions such as having access to label information and knowledge of training protocols. However, these conditions are often not met in most real-world applications. In this paper, we introduce a practical framework for …
