Multimodal Zero-Shot Hateful Meme Detection, Jiawen Zhu, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Wen Haw Chong Jun 2022

Multimodal Zero-Shot Hateful Meme Detection, Jiawen Zhu, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Wen Haw Chong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Facebook has recently launched the hateful meme detection challenge, which garnered much attention in academic and industry research communities. Researchers have proposed multimodal deep learning classification methods to perform hateful meme detection. While the proposed methods have yielded promising results, these classification methods are mostly supervised and heavily rely on labeled data that are not always available in the real-world setting. Therefore, this paper explores and aims to perform hateful meme detection in a zero-shot setting. Working towards this goal, we propose Target-Aware Multimodal Enhancement (TAME), which is a novel deep generative framework that can improve existing hateful meme classification …

A Simple Data Mixing Prior For Improving Self-Supervised Learning, Sucheng Ren, Huiyu Wang, Zhengqi Gao, Shengfeng He, Alan Yuille, Yuyin Zhou, Cihang Xie Jun 2022

A Simple Data Mixing Prior For Improving Self-Supervised Learning, Sucheng Ren, Huiyu Wang, Zhengqi Gao, Shengfeng He, Alan Yuille, Yuyin Zhou, Cihang Xie

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Data mixing (e.g., Mixup, Cutmix, ResizeMix) is an essential component for advancing recognition models. In this paper, we focus on studying its effectiveness in the self-supervised setting. By noticing the mixed images that share the same source images are intrinsically related to each other, we hereby propose SDMP, short for Simple Data Mixing Prior, to capture this straightforward yet essential prior, and position such mixed images as additional positive pairs to facilitate self-supervised representation learning. Our experiments verify that the proposed SDMP enables data mixing to help a set of self-supervised learning frameworks (e.g., MoCo) achieve better accuracy and out-of-distribution …

Faithful Extreme Rescaling Via Generative Prior Reciprocated Invertible Representations, Zhixuan Zhong, Liangyu Chai, Yang Zhou, Bailin Deng, Jia Pan, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a Generative prior ReciprocAted Invertible rescaling Network (GRAIN) for generating faithful high-resolution (HR) images from low-resolution (LR) invertible images with an extreme upscaling factor (64×). Previous researches have leveraged the prior knowledge of a pretrained GAN model to generate high-quality upscaling results. However, they fail to produce pixel-accurate results due to the highly ambiguous extreme mapping process. We remedy this problem by introducing a reciprocated invertible image rescaling process, in which high-resolution information can be delicately embedded into an invertible low-resolution image and generative prior for a faithful HR reconstruction. In particular, the invertible LR features not …

Codem: Conditional Domain Embeddings For Scalable Human Activity Recognition, Abu Zaher Md Faridee, Avijoy Chakma, Zahid Hasan, Nirmalya Roy, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We explore the effect of auxiliary labels in improving the classification accuracy of wearable sensor-based human activity recognition (HAR) systems, which are primarily trained with the supervision of the activity labels (e.g. running, walking, jumping). Supplemental meta-data are often available during the data collection process such as body positions of the wearable sensors, subjects' demographic information (e.g. gender, age), and the type of wearable used (e.g. smartphone, smart-watch). This information, while not directly related to the activity classification task, can nonetheless provide auxiliary supervision and has the potential to significantly improve the HAR accuracy by providing extra guidance on how …

Rhythmedge: Enabling Contactless Heart Rate Estimation On The Edge, Zahid Hasan, Emon Dey, Sreenivasan Ramasamy Ramamurthy, Nirmalya Roy, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The primary contribution of this paper is designing and prototyping a real-time edge computing system, RhythmEdge, that is capable of detecting changes in blood volume from facial videos (Remote Photoplethysmography; rPPG), enabling cardio-vascular health assessment instantly. The benefits of RhythmEdge include non-invasive measurement of cardiovascular activity, real-time system operation, inexpensive sensing components, and computing. RhythmEdge captures a short video of the skin using a camera and extracts rPPG features to estimate the Photoplethysmography (PPG) signal using a multi-task learning framework while offloading the edge computation. In addition, we intelligently apply a transfer learning approach to the multi-task learning framework to …

Shunted Self-Attention Via Multi-Scale Token Aggregation, Sucheng Ren, Daquan Zhou, Shengfeng He, Jiashi Feng, Xinchao Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent Vision Transformer (ViT) models have demonstrated encouraging results across various computer vision tasks, thanks to its competence in modeling long-range dependencies of image patches or tokens via self-attention. These models, however, usually designate the similar receptive fields of each token feature within each layer. Such a constraint inevitably limits the ability of each self-attention layer in capturing multi-scale features, thereby leading to performance degradation in handling images with multiple objects of different scales. To address this issue, we propose a novel and generic strategy, termed shunted selfattention (SSA), that allows ViTs to model the attentions at hybrid scales per …

Co-Advise: Cross Inductive Bias Distillation, Sucheng Ren, Zhengqi Gao, Tiany Hua, Zihui Xue, Yonglong Tian, Shengfeng He, Hang Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The inductive bias of vision transformers is more relaxed that cannot work well with insufficient data. Knowledge distillation is thus introduced to assist the training of transformers. Unlike previous works, where merely heavy convolution-based teachers are provided, in this paper, we delve into the influence of models inductive biases in knowledge distillation (e.g., convolution and involution). Our key observation is that the teacher accuracy is not the dominant reason for the student accuracy, but the teacher inductive bias is more important. We demonstrate that lightweight teachers with different architectural inductive biases can be used to co-advise the student transformer with …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Data isolation has become an obstacle to scale up query processing over big data, since sharing raw data among data owners is often prohibitive due to security concerns. A promising solution is to perform secure queries over a federation of multiple data owners leveraging secure multi-party computation (SMC) techniques, as evidenced by recent federation work over relational data. However, existing solutions are highly inefficient on spatial queries due to excessive secure distance operations for query processing and their usage of general-purpose SMC libraries for secure operation implementation. In this paper, we propose Hu-Fu, the first system for efficient and secure …

Desire: An Efficient Dynamic Cluster-Based Forest Indexing For Similarity Search In Multi-Metric Spaces, Yifan Zhu, Lu Chen, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Pengfei Wang Jun 2022

Desire: An Efficient Dynamic Cluster-Based Forest Indexing For Similarity Search In Multi-Metric Spaces, Yifan Zhu, Lu Chen, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Pengfei Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Similarity search fnds similar objects for a given query object based on a certain similarity metric. Similarity search in metric spaces has attracted increasing attention, as the metric space can accommodate any type of data and support fexible distance metrics. However, a metric space only models a single data type with a specifc similarity metric. In contrast, a multi-metric space combines multiple metric spaces to simultaneously model a variety of data types and a collection of associated similarity metrics. Thus, a multi-metric space is capable of performing similarity search over any combination of metric spaces. Many studies focus on indexing …

Revisiting Local Descriptor For Improved Few-Shot Classification, Jun He, Richang Hong, Xueliang Liu, Mingliang Xu, Qianru Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Few-shot classification studies the problem of quickly adapting a deep learner to understanding novel classes based on few support images. In this context, recent research efforts have been aimed at designing more and more complex classifiers that measure similarities between query and support images but left the importance of feature embeddings seldom explored. We show that the reliance on sophisticated classifiers is not necessary, and a simple classifier applied directly to improved feature embeddings can instead outperform most of the leading methods in the literature. To this end, we present a new method, named DCAP, for few-shot classification, in which …

Learnings From A Pilot Hybrid Question Answering System: Cqas: Case Study Based On A Singapore Government Agency's Customer Service Centre, Hui Shan Lee, Shankararaman, Venky, Eng Lieh Ouh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Singapore Government first released their digital government blueprint in 2018 with the key message for all their agencies to be "digital to the core and served with heart". With this push, agencies are moving towards human-centric digital services, especially for individual citizens. During COVID-19, Singapore government agencies introduced many COVID-19 digital initiatives resulting in more incoming inquiries from citizens to respective agencies. This surge in inquiries created the challenge on the agencies' end to meet service level agreements. One widely adopted solution is the use of chatbot technology that directly interfaces with the customer. However, several organisations have faced …

Blocklens: Visual Analytics Of Student Coding Behaviors In Block-Based Programming Environments., Sean Tung, Huan Wei, Haotian Li, Yong Wang, Meng Xia, Huamin. Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Block-based programming environments have been widely used to introduce K-12 students to coding. To guide students effectively, instructors and platform owners often need to understand behaviors like how students solve certain questions or where they get stuck and why. However, it is challenging for them to effectively analyze students’ coding data. To this end, we propose BlockLens, a novel visual analytics system to assist instructors and platform owners in analyzing students’ block-based coding behaviors, mistakes, and problem-solving patterns. BlockLens enables the grouping of students by question progress and performance, identification of common problem-solving strategies and pitfalls, and presentation of insights …

Person re-identification (Re-ID) aims at retrieving a person of interest across multiple non-overlapping cameras. With the advancement of deep neural networks and increasing demand of intelligent video surveillance, it has gained significantly increased interest in the computer vision community. By dissecting the involved components in developing a person Re-ID system, we categorize it into the closed-world and open-world settings. We first conduct a comprehensive overview with in-depth analysis for closed-world person Re-ID from three different perspectives, including deep feature representation learning, deep metric learning and ranking optimization. With the performance saturation under closed-world setting, the research focus for person Re-ID …

Decomposing Generation Networks With Structure Prediction For Recipe Generation, Hao Wang, Guosheng Lin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chunyan Miao Jun 2022

Decomposing Generation Networks With Structure Prediction For Recipe Generation, Hao Wang, Guosheng Lin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chunyan Miao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recipe generation from food images and ingredients is a challenging task, which requires the interpretation of the information from another modality. Different from the image captioning task, where the captions usually have one sentence, cooking instructions contain multiple sentences and have obvious structures. To help the model capture the recipe structure and avoid missing some cooking details, we propose a novel framework: Decomposing Generation Networks (DGN) with structure prediction, to get more structured and complete recipe generation outputs. Specifically, we split each cooking instruction into several phases, and assign different sub-generators to each phase. Our approach includes two novel ideas: …

Simultaneous Energy Harvesting And Gait Recognition Using Piezoelectric Energy Harvester, Dong Ma, Guohao Lan, Weitao Xu, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu Jun 2022

Simultaneous Energy Harvesting And Gait Recognition Using Piezoelectric Energy Harvester, Dong Ma, Guohao Lan, Weitao Xu, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Piezoelectric energy harvester, which generates electricity from stress or vibrations, is gaining increasing attention as a viable solution to extend battery life in wearables. Recent research further reveals that, besides generating energy, PEH can also serve as a passive sensor to detect human gait power-efficiently because its stress or vibration patterns are significantly influenced by the gait. However, as PEHs are not designed for precise measurement of motion, achievable gait recognition accuracy remains low with conventional classification algorithms. The accuracy deteriorates further when the generated electricity is stored simultaneously. To classify gait reliably while simultaneously storing generated energy, we make …

Simple Or Complex? Together For A More Accurate Just-In-Time Defect Predictor, Xin Zhou, Donggyun Han, David Lo May 2022

Simple Or Complex? Together For A More Accurate Just-In-Time Defect Predictor, Xin Zhou, Donggyun Han, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Just-In-Time (JIT) defect prediction aims to automatically predict whether a commit is defective or not, and has been widely studied in recent years. In general, most studies can be classified into two categories: 1) simple models using traditional machine learning classifiers with hand-crafted features, and 2) complex models using deep learning techniques to automatically extract features. Hand-crafted features used by simple models are based on expert knowledge but may not fully represent the semantic meaning of the commits. On the other hand, deep learning-based features used by complex models represent the semantic meaning of commits but may not reflect useful …

Natural Attack For Pre-Trained Models Of Code, Zhou Yang, Jieke Shi, Junda He, David Lo May 2022

Natural Attack For Pre-Trained Models Of Code, Zhou Yang, Jieke Shi, Junda He, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Pre-trained models of code have achieved success in many important software engineering tasks. However, these powerful models are vulnerable to adversarial attacks that slightly perturb model inputs to make a victim model produce wrong outputs. Current works mainly attack models of code with examples that preserve operational program semantics but ignore a fundamental requirement for adversarial example generation: perturbations should be natural to human judges, which we refer to as naturalness requirement. In this paper, we propose ALERT (Naturalness Aware Attack), a black-box attack that adversarially transforms inputs to make victim models produce wrong outputs. Different from prior works, this …

Rumorlens: Interactive Analysis And Validation Of Suspected Rumors On Social Media, Ran Wang, Kehan Du, Qianhe Chen, Yifei Zhao, Mojie Tang, Hongxi Tao, Shipan Wang, Yiyao Li, Yong Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the development of social media, various rumors can be easily spread on the Internet and such rumors can have serious negative effects on society. Thus, it has become a critical task for social media platforms to deal with suspected rumors. However, due to the lack of effective tools, it is often difficult for platform administrators to analyze and validate rumors from a large volume of information on a social media platform efficiently. We have worked closely with social media platform administrators for four months to summarize their requirements of identifying and analyzing rumors, and further proposed an interactive visual …

On The Transferability Of Pre-Trained Language Models For Low-Resource Programming Languages, Fuxiang Chen, Fatemeh H. Fard, David Lo, Timofey Bryksin May 2022

On The Transferability Of Pre-Trained Language Models For Low-Resource Programming Languages, Fuxiang Chen, Fatemeh H. Fard, David Lo, Timofey Bryksin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A recent study by Ahmed and Devanbu reported that using a corpus of code written in multilingual datasets to fine-tune multilingual Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) achieves higher performance as opposed to using a corpus of code written in just one programming language. However, no analysis was made with respect to fine-tuning monolingual PLMs. Furthermore, some programming languages are inherently different and code written in one language usually cannot be interchanged with the others, i.e., Ruby and Java code possess very different structure. To better understand how monolingual and multilingual PLMs affect different programming languages, we investigate 1) the performance of …

Exploring And Adapting Chinese Gpt To Pinyin Input Method, Minghuan Tan, Yong Dai, Duyu Tang, Zhangyin Feng, Guoping Huang, Jing Jiang, Jiwei Li, Shuming Shi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While GPT has become the de-facto method for text generation tasks, its application to pinyin input method remains unexplored. In this work, we make the first exploration to leverage Chinese GPT for pinyin input method. We find that a frozen GPT achieves state-of-the-art performance on perfect pinyin. However, the performance drops dramatically when the input includes abbreviated pinyin. A reason is that an abbreviated pinyin can be mapped to many perfect pinyin, which links to even larger number of Chinese characters. We mitigate this issue with two strategies, including enriching the context with pinyin and optimizing the training process to …

Neighbor-Anchoring Adversarial Graph Neural Networks (Extended Abstract), Zemin Liu, Yuan Fang, Yong Liu, Vincent W. Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While graph neural networks (GNNs) exhibit strong discriminative power, they often fall short of learning the underlying node distribution for increased robustness. To deal with this, inspired by generative adversarial networks (GANs), we investigate the problem of adversarial learning on graph neural networks, and propose a novel framework named NAGNN (i.e., Neighbor-anchoring Adversarial Graph Neural Networks) for graph representation learning, which trains not only a discriminator but also a generator that compete with each other. In particular, we propose a novel neighbor-anchoring strategy, where the generator produces samples with explicit features and neighborhood structures anchored on a reference real node, …

Guided Attention Multimodal Multitask Financial Forecasting With Inter-Company Relationships And Global And Local News, Meng Kiat Gary Ang, Ee-Peng Lim May 2022

Guided Attention Multimodal Multitask Financial Forecasting With Inter-Company Relationships And Global And Local News, Meng Kiat Gary Ang, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most works on financial forecasting use information directly associated with individual companies (e.g., stock prices, news on the company) to predict stock returns for trading. We refer to such company-specific information as local information. Stock returns may also be influenced by global information (e.g., news on the economy in general), and inter-company relationships. Capturing such diverse information is challenging due to the low signal-to-noise ratios, different time-scales, sparsity and distributions of global and local information from different modalities. In this paper, we propose a model that captures both global and local multimodal information for investment and risk management-related forecasting tasks. …

Do Pre-Trained Models Benefit Knowledge Graph Completion? A Reliable Evaluation And A Reasonable Approach, Xin Lv, Yankai Lin, Yixin Cao, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li, Zhiyuan Liu, Peng Li, Jie Zhou May 2022

Do Pre-Trained Models Benefit Knowledge Graph Completion? A Reliable Evaluation And A Reasonable Approach, Xin Lv, Yankai Lin, Yixin Cao, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li, Zhiyuan Liu, Peng Li, Jie Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, pre-trained language models (PLMs) have been shown to capture factual knowledge from massive texts, which encourages the proposal of PLM-based knowledge graph completion (KGC) models. However, these models are still quite behind the SOTA KGC models in terms of performance. In this work, we find two main reasons for the weak performance: (1) Inaccurate evaluation setting. The evaluation setting under the closed-world assumption (CWA) may underestimate the PLM-based KGC models since they introduce more external knowledge; (2) Inappropriate utilization of PLMs. Most PLM-based KGC models simply splice the labels of entities and relations as inputs, leading to …

Structure-Aware Visualization Retrieval, Haotian Li, Yong Wang, Wu Aoyu, Huan Wei, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the wide usage of data visualizations, a huge number of Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG)-based visualizations have been created and shared online. Accordingly, there has been an increasing interest in exploring how to retrieve perceptually similar visualizations from a large corpus, since it can beneft various downstream applications such as visualization recommendation. Existing methods mainly focus on the visual appearance of visualizations by regarding them as bitmap images. However, the structural information intrinsically existing in SVG-based visualizations is ignored. Such structural information can delineate the spatial and hierarchical relationship among visual elements, and characterize visualizations thoroughly from a new perspective. …

Adaptive Task Planning For Large-Scale Robotized Warehouses, Dingyuan Shi, Yongxin Tong, Zimu Zhou, Ke Xu, Wenzhe Tan, Hongbo Li May 2022

Adaptive Task Planning For Large-Scale Robotized Warehouses, Dingyuan Shi, Yongxin Tong, Zimu Zhou, Ke Xu, Wenzhe Tan, Hongbo Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Robotized warehouses are deployed to automatically distribute millions of items brought by the massive logistic orders from e-commerce. A key to automated item distribution is to plan paths for robots, also known as task planning, where each task is to deliver racks with items to pickers for processing and then return the rack back. Prior solutions are unfit for large-scale robotized warehouses due to the inflexibility to time-varying item arrivals and the low efficiency for high throughput. In this paper, we propose a new task planning problem called TPRW, which aims to minimize the end-to-end makespan that incorporates the entire …

Deep Depression Prediction On Longitudinal Data Via Joint Anomaly Ranking And Classification, Guansong Pang, Ngoc Thien Anh Pham, Emma Baker, Rebecca Bentley, Anton Van Den Hengel

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A wide variety of methods have been developed for identifying depression, but they focus primarily on measuring the degree to which individuals are suffering from depression currently. In this work we explore the possibility of predicting future depression using machine learning applied to longitudinal socio-demographic data. In doing so we show that data such as housing status, and the details of the family environment, can provide cues for predicting future psychiatric disorders. To this end, we introduce a novel deep multi-task recurrent neural network to learn time-dependent depression cues. The depression prediction task is jointly optimized with two auxiliary anomaly …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The development of deep learning programs, as a new programming paradigm, is observed to suffer from various defects. Emerging research works have been proposed to detect, debug, and repair deep learning bugs, which drive the need to construct the bug benchmarks. In this work, we present gDefects4DL, a dataset for general bugs of deep learning programs. Comparing to existing datasets, gDefects4DL collects bugs where the root causes and fix solutions can be well generalized to other projects. Our general bugs include deep learning program bugs such as (1) violation of deep learning API usage pattern (e.g., the standard to implement …

Detecting False Alarms From Automatic Static Analysis Tools: How Far Are We?, Hong Jin Kang, Khai Loong Aw, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatic static analysis tools (ASATs), such as Findbugs, have a high false alarm rate. The large number of false alarms produced poses a barrier to adoption. Researchers have proposed the use of machine learning to prune false alarms and present only actionable warnings to developers. The state-of-the-art study has identified a set of “Golden Features” based on metrics computed over the characteristics and history of the file, code, and warning. Recent studies show that machine learning using these features is extremely effective and that they achieve almost perfect performance. We perform a detailed analysis to better understand the strong performance …

Practitioners' Expectations On Automated Code Comment Generation, Xing Hu, Xin Xia, David Lo, Zhiyuan Wan, Qiuyuan Chen, Thomas Zimmermann

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Good comments are invaluable assets to software projects, as they help developers understand and maintain projects. However, due to some poor commenting practices, comments are often missing or inconsistent with the source code. Software engineering practitioners often spend a significant amount of time and effort reading and understanding programs without or with poor comments. To counter this, researchers have proposed various techniques to automatically generate code comments in recent years, which can not only save developers time writing comments but also help them better understand existing software projects. However, it is unclear whether these techniques can alleviate comment issues and …
