Hci Testing In Laboratory Or Field Settings, Chuan-Hoo Tan, Austin Silva, Rich Lee, Kanliang Wang, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents perspectives from both academia and practice on how an HCI testing is to be conducted and the deliberations that go into the testing. HCI testing can be conducted in closed-door laboratory or in a field setting. While there is an increased interest in field testing of an HCI artifact, there is always an enduring concern over how to administer a field testing given that the testers will have less control over the course of testing. In this paper, we cover HCI testing deliberation as well as the operational issues of field testing, and conclude the paper with …

Video Modeling And Learning On Riemannian Manifold For Emotion Recognition In The Wild, Mengyi Liu, Ruiping Wang, Shaoxin Li, Zhiwu Huang, Shiguang Shan, Xilin Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present the method for our submission to the emotion recognition in the wild challenge (EmotiW). The challenge is to automatically classify the emotions acted by human subjects in video clips under real-world environment. In our method, each video clip can be represented by three types of image set models (i.e. linear subspace, covariance matrix, and Gaussian distribution) respectively, which can all be viewed as points residing on some Riemannian manifolds. Then different Riemannian kernels are employed on these set models correspondingly for similarity/ distance measurement. For classification, three types of classifiers, i.e. kernel SVM, logistic regression, …

Patient Engagement In The Medical Facility Waiting Room Using Gamified Healthcare Information Delivery, Raheel Hassan, Nathan W. Twyman, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This study explores the proposition that medical facility waiting rooms are an opportune setting to engage with and educate patients while they are waiting for care. In collaboration with emergency department (ED) personnel, we developed ER Hero, a tablet-based application for waiting rooms that introduces patients to ED professionals and operations through mini-games and story-like interaction. We evaluated this prototype with human participants to determine how well it performed when compared to paper-based information disclosure presenting the same information. Participants using the application exhibited increased ED knowledge, decreased nervousness, and increased interest. The gamified application outperformed a paper-based approach on …

Modeling Human-Like Non-Rationality For Social Agents, Jaroslaw Kochanowicz, Ah-Hwee Tan, Daniel Thalmann May 2016

Modeling Human-Like Non-Rationality For Social Agents, Jaroslaw Kochanowicz, Ah-Hwee Tan, Daniel Thalmann

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Humans are not rational beings. Deviations from rationality in human thinking are currently well documented [25] as non-reducible to rational pursuit of egoistic benefit or its occasional distortion with temporary emotional excitation, as it is often assumed. This occurs not only outside conceptual reasoning or rational goal realization but also subconsciously and often in certainty that they did not and could not take place ‘in my case’. Non-rationality can no longer be perceived as a rare affective abnormality in otherwise rational thinking, but as a systemic, permanent quality, ’a design feature’ of human cognition. While social psychology has systematically addressed …

An Autonomous Agent For Learning Spatiotemporal Models Of Human Daily Activities, Shan Gao, Ah-Hwee Tan May 2016

An Autonomous Agent For Learning Spatiotemporal Models Of Human Daily Activities, Shan Gao, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) refer to activities performed by individuals on a daily basis. As ADLs are indicatives of a person’s habits, lifestyle, and well being, learning the knowledge of people’s ADL routine has great values in the healthcare and consumer domains. In this paper, we propose an autonomous agent, named Agent for Spatia-Temporal Activity Pattern Modeling (ASTAPM), being able to learn spatial and temporal patterns of human ADLs. ASTAPM utilises a self-organizing neural network model named Spatiotemporal - Adaptive Resonance Theory (ST-ART). ST-ART is capable of integrating multimodal contextual information, involving the time and space, wherein the ADL …

So given this state of affairs, there is an increasing need for an alternative, really tough malware …

Extended Pixel Representation For Image Segmentation, Deeptha Girish, Vineeta Singh, Anca Ralescu Apr 2016

Extended Pixel Representation For Image Segmentation, Deeptha Girish, Vineeta Singh, Anca Ralescu

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

We explore the use of extended pixel representation for color based image segmentation using the K-means clustering algorithm. Various extended pixel representations have been implemented in this paper and their results have been compared. By extending the representation of pixels an image is mapped to a higher dimensional space. Unlike other approaches, where data is mapped into an implicit features space of higher dimension (kernel methods), in the approach considered here, the higher dimensions are defined explicitly. Preliminary experimental results which illustrate the proposed approach are promising.

An Autonomic Computing System Based On A Rule-Based Policy Engine And Artificial Immune Systems, Rahmira Rufus, William Nick, Joseph Shelton, Albert Esterline Apr 2016

An Autonomic Computing System Based On A Rule-Based Policy Engine And Artificial Immune Systems, Rahmira Rufus, William Nick, Joseph Shelton, Albert Esterline

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

Autonomic computing systems arose from the notion that complex computing systems should have properties like those of the autonomic nervous system, which coordinates bodily functions and allows attention to be directed to more pressing needs. An autonomic system allows the system administrator to specify high-level policies, which the system maintains without administrator assistance. Policy enforcement can be done with a rule based system such as Jess (a java expert system shell). An autonomic system must be able to monitor itself, and this is often a limiting factor. We are developing an automatic system that has a policy engine and uses …

Towards The Development Of A Cyber Analysis & Advisement Tool (Caat) For Mitigating De-Anonymization Attacks, Siobahn Day, Henry Williams, Joseph Shelton, Gerry Dozier

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

We are seeing a rise in the number of Anonymous Social Networks (ASN) that claim to provide a sense of user anonymity. However, what many users of ASNs do not know that a person can be identified by their writing style.

In this paper, we provide an overview of a number of author concealment techniques, their impact on the semantic meaning of an author's original text, and introduce AuthorCAAT, an application for mitigating de-anonymization attacks. Our results show that iterative paraphrasing performs the best in terms of author concealment and performs well with respect to Latent Semantic Analysis.

Situations And Evidence For Identity Using Dempster-Shafer Theory, William Nick, Yenny Dominguez, Albert Esterline Apr 2016

Situations And Evidence For Identity Using Dempster-Shafer Theory, William Nick, Yenny Dominguez, Albert Esterline

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

We present a computational framework for identity based on Barwise and Devlin’s situation theory. We present an example with constellations of situations identifying an individual to create what we call id-situations, where id-actions are performed, along with supporting situations. We use Semantic Web standards to represent and reason about the situations in our example. We show how to represent the strength of the evidence, within the situations, as a measure of the support for judgments reached in the id-situation. To measure evidence of an identity from the supporting situations, we use the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence. We enhance Dempster- Shafer …

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

COMPS computer-mediated group discussion exercises are being added to a second-semester computer programming class. The class is a gateway for computer science and computer engineering students, where many students have difficulty succeeding well enough to proceed in their major. This paper reports on first results of surveys on student experience with the exercises. It also reports on the affective states observed in the discussions that are candidates for analysis of group functioning. As a step toward computer monitoring of the discussions, an experiment in using dialogue features to identify the gender of the participants is described.

A Tool For Staging Mixed-Initiative Dialogs, Joshua W. Buck, Saverio Perugini

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

We discuss and demonstrate a tool for prototyping dialog-based systems that, given a high-level specification of a human-computer dialog, stages the dialog for interactive use. The tool enables a dialog designer to evaluate a variety of dialogs without having to program each individual dialog, and serves as a proof-of-concept for our approach to mixed-initiative dialog modeling and implementation from a programming language-based perspective.

Keynote Talk 2: Social And Perceptual Fidelity Of Avatars And Autonomous Agents In Virtual Reality, Benjamin Kunz

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

Advances in display, computing and sensor technologies have led to a revival of interest and excitement surrounding immersive virtual reality. Here, on the cusp of the arrival of practical and affordable virtual reality technology, are open questions regarding the factors that contribute to compelling and immersive virtual worlds.

In order for virtual reality to be useful as a tool for use in training, education, communication, research, content-creation and entertainment, we must understand the degree to which the perception of the virtual environment and virtual characters resembles perception of the real world.

Relatedly, virtual reality's utility in these contexts demands evidence …

Exploring Web-Based Visual Interfaces For Searching Research Articles On Digital Library Systems, Maxwell Fowler, Chris Bellis, Chris Perry, Beomjin Kim Apr 2016

Exploring Web-Based Visual Interfaces For Searching Research Articles On Digital Library Systems, Maxwell Fowler, Chris Bellis, Chris Perry, Beomjin Kim

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

Previous studies that present information archived in digital libraries have used either document meta-data or document content. The current search mechanisms commonly return text-based results that were compiled from the meta-data without reflecting the underlying content. Visual analytics is a possible solution for improving searches by presenting a large amount of information, including document content alongside meta-data, in a limited screen space. This paper introduces a multi-tiered visual interface for searching research articles stored in Digital Library systems. The goals of this system are to allow users to find research papers about their interests in a large work space, to …

Fuzzy Algorithms: Applying Fuzzy Logic To The Golden Ratio Search To Find Solutions Faster, Stephany Coffman-Wolph Apr 2016

Fuzzy Algorithms: Applying Fuzzy Logic To The Golden Ratio Search To Find Solutions Faster, Stephany Coffman-Wolph

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

Applying the concept of fuzzy logic (an abstract version of Boolean logic) to well-known algorithms generates an abstract version (i.e., fuzzy algorithm) that often results in computational improvements. Precision may be reduced but counteracted by gaining computational efficiency. The trade-offs (e.g., small increase in space, loss of precision) for a variety of applications are deemed acceptable. The fuzzification of an algorithm can be accomplished using a simple three-step framework. Creating a new fuzzy algorithm goes beyond simply converting the data from raw data into fuzzy data by additionally converting the operators and concepts into their abstract equivalents. This paper demonstrates: …

The Webid Protocol Enhanced With Group Access, Biometrics, And Access Policies, Cory Sabol, William Nick, Maya Earl, Joseph Shelton, Albert Esterline

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

The WebID protocol solves the challenge of remembering usernames and passwords. We enhance this protocol in three ways. First, we give it the ability to manage groups of agents and control their access to resources on the Web. Second, we add support for biometric access control to enhance security. Finally, we add support for OWL-based policies that may be federated and result in flexible access control.

Real-Time Unsupervised Clustering, Gabriel Ferrer Apr 2016

Real-Time Unsupervised Clustering, Gabriel Ferrer

MAICS: The Modern Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science Conference

In our research program, we are developing machine learning algorithms to enable a mobile robot to build a compact representation of its environment. This requires the processing of each new input to terminate in constant time. Existing machine learning algorithms are either incapable of meeting this constraint or deliver problematic results. In this paper, we describe a new algorithm for real-time unsupervised clustering, Bounded Self-Organizing Clustering. It executes in constant time for each input, and it produces clusterings that are significantly better than those created by the Self-Organizing Map, its closest competitor, on sensor data acquired from a physically embodied …

Understanding The Determinants Of Human Computation Game Acceptance: The Effects Of Aesthetic Experience And Output Quality, Xiaohui Wang, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Ee-Peng Lim, Wei Liang Adrian Vu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Purpose: Human computation games (HCGs) that blend gaming with utilitarian purposes are a potentially effective channel for content creation. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the driving factors behind players’ adoption of HCGs through a music video tagging game. The effects of perceived aesthetic experience (PAE) and perceived output quality (POQ) on HCG acceptance are empirically examined. Design/methodology/approach: An integrative structural model is developed to explain how hedonic and utilitarian factors, including PAE and POQ, working with another salient factor – perceived usefulness (PU) – affect the acceptance of HCGs. The structural equation modeling method is used to …

Watertight And 2-Manifold Surface Meshes Using Dual Contouring With Tetrahedral Decomposition Of Grid Cubes, Tanweer Rashid, Sharmin Sultana, Michel A. Audette Jan 2016

Watertight And 2-Manifold Surface Meshes Using Dual Contouring With Tetrahedral Decomposition Of Grid Cubes, Tanweer Rashid, Sharmin Sultana, Michel A. Audette

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

The Dual Contouring algorithm (DC) is a grid-based process used to generate surface meshes from volumetric data. The advantage of DC is that it can reproduce sharp features by inserting vertices anywhere inside the grid cube, as opposed to the Marching Cubes (MC) algorithm that can insert vertices only on the grid edges. However, DC is unable to guarantee 2-manifold and watertight meshes due to the fact that it produces only one vertex for each grid cube. We present a modified Dual Contouring algorithm that is capable of overcoming this limitation. Our method decomposes an ambiguous grid cube into a …

Patient Portals: Achieving Technology Acceptance And Meaningful Use In Independent Physician-Managed Practices, Kimberly W. Bartholomew

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

As the bulk of medical health records shift from paper-based file systems to electronic formats, the promise of the transformation process called healthcare reform included adding efficiencies to medical practice workflows, lower costs, improved quality of care and most important, and the freeing of patient information from traditional propriety silos. With this incoming largess of protected health information data now viewable through online patient portals, patients can be empowered to become educated and active in their own health care decisions, but only if they have admission to their information. A digital divide currently exists in many medical practices where only …

A Tool-Free Calibration Method For Turntable-Based 3d Scanning Systems, Xufang Pang, Rynson W.H. Lau, Zhan Song, Shengfeng He, Shengfeng He Jan 2016

A Tool-Free Calibration Method For Turntable-Based 3d Scanning Systems, Xufang Pang, Rynson W.H. Lau, Zhan Song, Shengfeng He, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Turntable-based 3D scanners are popular but require calibration of the turntable axis. Existing methods for turntable calibration typically make use of specially designed tools, such as a chessboard or criterion sphere, which users must manually install and dismount. In this article, the authors propose an automatic method to calibrate the turntable axis without any calibration tools. Given a scan sequence of the input object, they first recover the initial rotation axis from an automatic registration step. Then they apply an iterative procedure to obtain the optimized turntable axis. This iterative procedure alternates between two steps: refining the initial pose of …

An Immersive Telepresence System Using Rgb-D Sensors And Head-Mounted Display, Xinzhong Lu, Ju Shen, Saverio Perugini, Jianjun Yang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We present a tele-immersive system that enables people to interact with each other in a virtual world using body gestures in addition to verbal communication. Beyond the obvious applications, including general online conversations and gaming, we hypothesize that our proposed system would be particularly beneficial to education by offering rich visual contents and interactivity. One distinct feature is the integration of egocentric pose recognition that allows participants to use their gestures to demonstrate and manipulate virtual objects simultaneously. This functionality enables the instructor to effectively and efficiently explain and illustrate complex concepts or sophisticated problems in an intuitive manner. The …

Aesthetic Experience And Acceptance Of Human Computation Games, Xiaohui Wang, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Ee-Peng Lim, Adrian Wei Liang Vu Dec 2015

Aesthetic Experience And Acceptance Of Human Computation Games, Xiaohui Wang, Dion Hoe-Lian Goh, Ee-Peng Lim, Adrian Wei Liang Vu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Human computation games (HCGs) are applications that leverage games to solve computational problems that are out reach of the capacity of computers. Game aesthetics are critical for HCG acceptance, and the game elements should motivate users to contribute time and effort. In this paper, we examine the effect of aesthetic experience on intention to use HCGs. A between-subjects experiment was conducted to compare a HCG and a human computation system (HCS). Results demonstrated that HCGs provided a greater sense of aesthetic experience and attracted more intentional usage than HCSs. Implications of this study are discussed.

A Benchmark And Comparative Study Of Video-Based Face Recognition On Cox Face Database, Zhiwu Huang, S. Shan, R. Wang, H. Zhang, S. Lao, A. Kuerban, X. Chen Dec 2015

A Benchmark And Comparative Study Of Video-Based Face Recognition On Cox Face Database, Zhiwu Huang, S. Shan, R. Wang, H. Zhang, S. Lao, A. Kuerban, X. Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Face recognition with still face images has been widely studied, while the research on video-based face recognition is inadequate relatively, especially in terms of benchmark datasets and comparisons. Real-world video-based face recognition applications require techniques for three distinct scenarios: 1) Videoto-Still (V2S); 2) Still-to-Video (S2V); and 3) Video-to-Video (V2V), respectively, taking video or still image as query or target. To the best of our knowledge, few datasets and evaluation protocols have benchmarked for all the three scenarios. In order to facilitate the study of this specific topic, this paper contributes a benchmarking and comparative study based on a newly collected …

Mylife: An Online Personal Memory Album, Di Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan Dec 2015

Mylife: An Online Personal Memory Album, Di Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this demo, we illustrate the formation, retrieval, and playback of autobiographical memory in an online personal memory album named MyLife. The memory in MyLife consists of pictorial snapshots of one's life together with the associated context, namely time, location, people, activity, imagery, and emotion. MyLife allows direct import of memories from other online personal photo repositories. For memory retrieval, users can use not only exact cues, but also partial, vague, inaccurate, and random ones. The retrieved memories are then played back as a movie-like slide show with various visual effects and background music. MyLife holds high potential in both …

Flow Experience In Virtual Worlds: Individuals Versus Dyads, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Brenda Eschenbrenner Dec 2015

Flow Experience In Virtual Worlds: Individuals Versus Dyads, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Brenda Eschenbrenner

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Flow is a state of mind in which one is deeply absorbed and immersed in an activity to the point where nothing else matters. Although flow can occur in solitary and social contexts, which context fosters greater flow is unclear. Consistent with self-determination theory, dyads working collaboratively achieved higher states of flow than individuals working alone. In other words, dyads achieved higher states of focused concentration and experienced greater temporal dissociation than individuals working alone. Surprisingly and contradictory to previous findings, dyads did not experience greater enjoyment than individuals working alone. We attributed this surprising finding to the hedonic nature …
