'Is More Better?': Impact Of Multiple Photos On Perception Of Persona Profiles, Joni Salminen, Lene Nielsen, Soon-Gyo Jung, Jisun An, Haewoon Kwak, Bernard J. Jansen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this research, we investigate if and how more photos than a single headshot can heighten the level of information provided by persona profiles. We conduct eye-tracking experiments and qualitative interviews with variations in the photos: a single headshot, a headshot and images of the persona in different contexts, and a headshot with pictures of different people representing key persona attributes. The results show that more contextual photos significantly improve the information end users derive from a persona profile; however, showing images of different people creates confusion and lowers the informativeness. Moreover, we discover that choice of pictures results in …

The VIREO Known-Item Search (KIS) system has joined the Video Browser Showdown (VBS) [1] evaluation benchmark for the first time in year 2017. With experiences learned, the second version of VIREO KIS is presented in this paper. Considering the color-sketch based retrieval, we propose a simple grid-based approach for color query. This method allows the aggregation of color distributions in video frames into a shot representation, and generates the pre-computed rank list for all available queries which reduces computational resources and favors a recommendation module. With focusing on concept based retrieval, we modify our multimedia event detection system at TRECVID …

On Modeling Sense Relatedness In Multi-Prototype Word Embedding, Yixin Cao, Juanzi Li, Jiaxin Shi, Zhiyuan Liu, Chengjiang Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To enhance the expression ability of distributional word representation learning model, many researchers tend to induce word senses through clustering, and learn multiple embedding vectors for each word, namely multi-prototype word embedding model. However, most related work ignores the relatedness among word senses which actually plays an important role. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to capture word sense relatedness in multi-prototype word embedding model. Particularly, we differentiate the original sense and extended senses of a word by introducing their global occurrence information and model their relatedness through the local textual context information. Based on the idea of …

Color-Sketch Simulator: A Guide For Color-Based Visual Known-Item Search, Jakub Lokoč, Anh Nguyen Phuong, Marta Vomlelová, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of a color-sketch retrieval system for a given multimedia database, tedious evaluations involving real users are required as users are in the center of query sketch formulation. However, without any prior knowledge about the bottlenecks of the underlying sketch-based retrieval model, the evaluations may focus on wrong settings and thus miss the desired effect. Furthermore, users have usually no clues or recommendations to draw color-sketches effectively. In this paper, we aim at a preliminary analysis to identify potential bottlenecks of a flexible color-sketch retrieval model. We present a formal framework based on position-color feature …

Cross-Modal Recipe Retrieval With Rich Food Attributes, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua Oct 2017

Cross-Modal Recipe Retrieval With Rich Food Attributes, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Food is rich of visible (e.g., colour, shape) and procedural (e.g., cutting, cooking) attributes. Proper leveraging of these attributes, particularly the interplay among ingredients, cutting and cooking methods, for health-related applications has not been previously explored. This paper investigates cross-modal retrieval of recipes, specifically to retrieve a text-based recipe given a food picture as query. As similar ingredient composition can end up with wildly different dishes depending on the cooking and cutting procedures, the difficulty of retrieval originates from fine-grained recognition of rich attributes from pictures. With a multi-task deep learning model, this paper provides insights on the feasibility of …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The art of cooking is always fascinating. Nevertheless, reproducing a delicious dish that one has never encountered before is not easy. Even if the name of dish is known and the corresponding recipe could be retrieved, the right ingredients for cooking the dish may not be available due to factors such as geography region or season. Furthermore, knowing how to cut, cook and control timing may be challenging for one whose has no cooking experience. In this paper, an all-around cooking assistant mobile app, named Pic2Dish, is developed to help users who would like to cook a dish but neither …

Ancr—An Adaptive Network Coding Routing Scheme For Wsns With Different-Success-Rate Links †, Xiang Ji, Anwen Wang, Chunyu Li, Chun Ma, Yao Peng, Dajin Wang, Qingyi Hua, Feng Chen, Dingyi Fang

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

As the underlying infrastructure of the Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been widely used in many applications. Network coding is a technique in WSNs to combine multiple channels of data in one transmission, wherever possible, to save node’s energy as well as increase the network throughput. So far most works on network coding are based on two assumptions to determine coding opportunities: (1) All the links in the network have the same transmission success rate; (2) Each link is bidirectional, and has the same transmission success rate on both ways. However, these assumptions may not be …

A Case Study For Ecampus Spatial: Business Data Exploration, James Carswell, Thanh Thao Pham Ti, Andrea Ballatore, Junjun Yin, Linh Truong-Hong

Books/Book chapters

Location based querying is the core interaction paradigm between mobile citizens and the Internet of Things, so providing users with intelligent web-services that interact efficiently with web and wireless devices to recommend personalised services is a key goal. With today's popular Web Map Services, users can ask for general information at a specific location, but not detailed information such as related functionality or environments. This shortcoming comes from a lack of connection between non-spatial “business” data and spatial “map” data. This chapter presents a novel approach for location-based querying in web and wireless environments, in which non-spatial business data is …

Object Detection Meets Knowledge Graphs, Yuan Fang, Kingsley Kuan, Jie Lin, Cheston Tan, Vijay Chandrasekhar Aug 2017

Object Detection Meets Knowledge Graphs, Yuan Fang, Kingsley Kuan, Jie Lin, Cheston Tan, Vijay Chandrasekhar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Object detection in images is a crucial task in computer vision, with important applications ranging from security surveillance to autonomous vehicles. Existing state-of-the-art algorithms, including deep neural networks, only focus on utilizing features within an image itself, largely neglecting the vast amount of background knowledge about the real world. In this paper, we propose a novel framework of knowledge-aware object detection, which enables the integration of external knowledge such as knowledge graphs into any object detection algorithm. The framework employs the notion of semantic consistency to quantify and generalize knowledge, which improves object detection through a re-optimization process to achieve …

Bridge Text And Knowledge By Learning Multi-Prototype Entity Mention Embedding, Yixin Cao, Lifu Huang, Heng Ji, Xu Chen, Juanzi Li Aug 2017

Bridge Text And Knowledge By Learning Multi-Prototype Entity Mention Embedding, Yixin Cao, Lifu Huang, Heng Ji, Xu Chen, Juanzi Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Integrating text and knowledge into a unified semantic space has attracted significant research interests recently. However, the ambiguity in the common space remains a challenge, namely that the same mention phrase usually refers to various entities. In this paper, to deal with the ambiguity of entity mentions, we propose a novel Multi-Prototype Mention Embedding model, which learns multiple sense embeddings for each mention by jointly modeling words from textual contexts and entities derived from a knowledge base. In addition, we further design an efficient language model based approach to disambiguate each mention to a specific sense. In experiments, both qualitative …

The Role Of Knowledge Sharing Via Organizational Social Media In The Workplace, Murad A. Moqbel, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although a plethora of studies have been recently conducted on organizational social media, little research has specifically examined how organizational social media can contribute to organizational workers’ performance through knowledge sharing. The objective of this research is to fill this gap by investigating the role of knowledge sharing in organizational social media use and its effect on in-role and innovative performance through the lens of social capital and social cognitive theories. Hypotheses were developed and a survey study is proposed.

Sparsity Based Reflection Removal Using External Patch Search, Renjie Wan, Boxin Shi, Ah-Hwee Tan, Alex C. Kot Jul 2017

Sparsity Based Reflection Removal Using External Patch Search, Renjie Wan, Boxin Shi, Ah-Hwee Tan, Alex C. Kot

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Reflection removal aims at separating the mixture of the desired background scenes and the undesired reflections, when the photos are taken through the glass. It has both aesthetic and practical applications which can largely improve the performance of many multimedia tasks. Existing reflection removal approaches heavily rely on scene priors such as separable sparse gradients brought by different levels of blur, and they easily fail when such priors are not observed in many real scenes. Sparse representation models and nonlocal image priors have shown their effectiveness in image restoration with self similarity. In this work, we propose a reflection removal …

Deep Learning On Lie Groups For Skeleton-Based Action Recognition, Zhiwu Huang, C. Wan, T. Probst, Gool L. Van Jul 2017

Deep Learning On Lie Groups For Skeleton-Based Action Recognition, Zhiwu Huang, C. Wan, T. Probst, Gool L. Van

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, skeleton-based action recognition has become a popular 3D classification problem. State-of-the-art methods typically first represent each motion sequence as a high-dimensional trajectory on a Lie group with an additional dynamic time warping, and then shallowly learn favorable Lie group features. In this paper we incorporate the Lie group structure into a deep network architecture to learn more appropriate Lie group features for 3D action recognition. Within the network structure, we design rotation mapping layers to transform the input Lie group features into desirable ones, which are aligned better in the temporal domain. To reduce the high feature …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online retail business has become an emerging market for almost all business owners. Online recommender systems provide better service to consumers during their decision making processes. In this study, a controlled lab experiment was conducted to assess the effect of recommendation timing (early, mid, and late) and recommendation source (expert reviews vs. consumer reviews) on online consumers’ interest and attention. Eye-tracking data was extracted from the experiment and analyzed. The results suggest that consumers show more interest in recommendation based on consumer reviews than expert reviews. Earlier recommendations do not receive greater attention than later recommendations.

Active Video Summarization: Customized Summaries Via On-Line Interaction With The User, Ana Garcia Del Molino, Xavier Boix, Joo-Hwee Lim, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To facilitate the browsing of long videos, automatic video summarization provides an excerpt that represents its content. In the case of egocentric and consumer videos, due to their personal nature, adapting the summary to specific user’s preferences is desirable. Current approaches to customizable video summarization obtain the user’s preferences prior to the summarization process. As a result, the user needs to manually modify the summary to further meet the preferences. In this paper, we introduce Active Video Summarization (AVS), an interactive approach to gather the user’s preferences while creating the summary. AVS asks questions about the summary to update it …

Unsupervised Visual Hashing With Semantic Assistant For Content-Based Image Retrieval, Lei Zhu, Jialie Shen, Liang Xie, Zhiyong Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As an emerging technology to support scalable content-based image retrieval (CBIR), hashing has recently received great attention and became a very active research domain. In this study, we propose a novel unsupervised visual hashing approach called semantic-assisted visual hashing (SAVH). Distinguished from semi-supervised and supervised visual hashing, its core idea is to effectively extract the rich semantics latently embedded in auxiliary texts of images to boost the effectiveness of visual hashing without any explicit semantic labels. To achieve the target, a unified unsupervised framework is developed to learn hash codes by simultaneously preserving visual similarities of images, integrating the semantic …

Designing An Intervention For Novice Programmers Based On Meaningful Gamification: An Expert Evaluation, Jenilyn L. Agapito, Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications

Gamification is defined as the addition of game-like elements and mechanics to non-game contexts to encourage certain desired behaviors. It is becoming a popular classroom intervention used in computer science instruction, including CS1, the first course computer science students take. It is being operationalized to enhance students' learning experience and achievement. However, existing studies have mostly implemented reward-based game elements which have resulted to contrasting behaviors among the students. Meaningful gamification, characterized as the use of game design elements to encourage users build internal motivation to behave in a certain way, is contended to be a more effective approach. The …

Easing Cross-Border Communication: Mobile-Mediated Communication And Its Framework, Kyungsub Choi, Young Soo Kim Jan 2017

Easing Cross-Border Communication: Mobile-Mediated Communication And Its Framework, Kyungsub Choi, Young Soo Kim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Communication is probably the most critical component of an organization engaged in a cross-border collaboration. Today’s smart devices substantially contribute to such communication. Combined with social media, mobile communication technologies are becoming the main platform for many core functions within organizations. In this paper, we identified seven media identifiable attributes: synchronicity (SYN), de-individuation and co-presence (DCP), accessibility readiness (ARD), cognizance of environment change (CEC), wearability-portability (WRB) modality-select (MDS) and visibility (VSB). These seven attributes significantly impact the course of mobile-mediated communication. We believe that development of a theoretical perspective that embraces the complexity of mobile-mediated communication is due in order …

Cross-Modal Recipe Retrieval: How To Cook This Dish?, Jingjing Chen, Lei Pang, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In social media users like to share food pictures. One intelligent feature, potentially attractive to amateur chefs, is the recommendation of recipe along with food. Having this feature, unfortunately, is still technically challenging. First, the current technology in food recognition can only scale up to few hundreds of categories, which are yet to be practical for recognizing ten of thousands of food categories. Second, even one food category can have variants of recipes that differ in ingredient composition. Finding the best-match recipe requires knowledge of ingredients, which is a fine-grained recognition problem. In this paper, we consider the problem from …

Handling Relationships In A Wiki System, Yashi Kamboj Dec 2016

Handling Relationships In A Wiki System, Yashi Kamboj

Master's Projects

Wiki software enables users to manage content on the web, and create or edit web pages freely. Most wiki systems support the creation of hyperlinks on pages and have a simple text syntax for page formatting. A common, more advanced feature is to allow pages to be grouped together as categories. Currently, wiki systems support categorization of pages in a very traditional way by specifying whether a wiki page belongs to a category or not. Categorization represents unary relationship and is not sufficient to represent n-ary relationships, those involving links between multiple wiki pages.

In this project, we extend Yioop, …

Web-Based Integrated Development Environment, Hien T. Vu Dec 2016

Web-Based Integrated Development Environment, Hien T. Vu

Master's Projects

As tablets become more powerful and more economical, students are attracted to them and are moving away from desktops and laptops. Their compact size and easy to use Graphical User Interface (GUI) reduce the learning and adoption barriers for new users. This also changes the environment in which undergraduate Computer Science students learn how to program. Popular Integrated Development Environments (IDE) such as Eclipse and NetBeans require disk space for local installations as well as an external compiler. These requirements cannot be met by current tablets and thus drive the need for a web-based IDE. There are also many other …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatically identifying characters in movies has attracted researchers' interest and led to several significant and interesting applications. However, due to the vast variation in character appearance as well as the weakness and ambiguity of available annotation, it is still a challenging problem. In this paper, we investigate this problem with the supervision of actor-character name correspondence provided by the movie cast. Our proposed framework, namely, Cast2Face, is featured by: 1) we restrict the assigned names within the set of character names in the cast; 2) for each character, by using the corresponding actor and movie name as keywords, we retrieve …

Hierarchical Visualization Of Video Search Results For Topic-Based Browsing, Yu-Gang Jiang, Jiajun Wang, Qiang Wang, Wei Liu, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing video search engines return a ranked list of videos for each user query, which is not convenient for browsing the results of query topics that have multiple facets, such as the "early life," "personal life," and "presidency" of a query "Barack Obama." Organizing video search results into semantically structured hierarchies with nodes covering different topic facets can significantly improve the browsing efficiency for such queries. In this paper, we introduce a hierarchical visualization approach for video search result browsing, which can help users quickly understand the multiple facets of a query topic in a very well-organized manner. Given a …

Deep-Based Ingredient Recognition For Cooking Recipe Retrieval, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2016

Deep-Based Ingredient Recognition For Cooking Recipe Retrieval, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Retrieving recipes corresponding to given dish pictures facilitates the estimation of nutrition facts, which is crucial to various health relevant applications. The current approaches mostly focus on recognition of food category based on global dish appearance without explicit analysis of ingredient composition. Such approaches are incapable for retrieval of recipes with unknown food categories, a problem referred to as zero-shot retrieval. On the other hand, content-based retrieval without knowledge of food categories is also difficult to attain satisfactory performance due to large visual variations in food appearance and ingredient composition. As the number of ingredients is far less than food …
