At present, the entity and relation joint extraction task has attracted more and more scholars' attention in the field of natural language processing (NLP). However, most of their methods rely on NLP tools to construct dependency trees to obtain sentence structure information. The adjacency matrix constructed by the dependency tree can convey syntactic information. Dependency trees obtained through NLP tools are too dependent on the tools and may not be very accurate in contextual semantic description. At the same time, a large amount of irrelevant information will cause redundancy. This paper presents a novel end-to-end entity and relation joint extraction …

Enhancing Institutional Assessment And Reporting Through Conversational Technologies: Exploring The Potential Of Ai-Powered Tools And Natural Language Processing, James Hutson, Daniel Plate
Faculty Scholarship
This study explores the potential of conversational technologies, AI-powered tools, and natural language processing (NLP) in enhancing institutional assessment and reporting processes in higher education. The traditional approach to assessment often involves labor-intensive manual analysis of extensive data and documents, which burdens institutions. To address these challenges, AI-powered tools, such as ChatGPT, LangChain, Poe, Claude, and others, along with NLP techniques, are investigated in relationship to their ability to improve institutional assessment practices and output. By leveraging these advanced technologies, assessment officers and institutional effectiveness, researchers can engage in dynamic conversations with data, transforming spreadsheets and documents from static artifacts …

People who share similar opinions towards controversial topics could form an echo chamber and may share similar political views toward other topics as well. The existence of such connections, which we call connected behavior, gives researchers a unique opportunity to predict how one would behave for a future event given their past behaviors. In this work, we propose a framework to conduct connected behavior analysis. Neural stance detection models are trained on Twitter data collected on three seemingly independent topics, i.e., wearing a mask, racial equality, and Trump, to detect people’s stance, which we consider as their online behavior in …

Behind Derogatory Migrants' Terms For Venezuelan Migrants: Xenophobia And Sexism Identification With Twitter Data And Nlp, Joseph Martínez, Melissa Miller-Felton, Jose Padilla, Erika Frydenlund
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
The sudden arrival of many migrants can present new challenges for host communities and create negative attitudes that reflect that tension. In the case of Colombia, with the influx of over 2.5 million Venezuelan migrants, such tensions arose. Our research objective is to investigate how those sentiments arise in social media. We focused on monitoring derogatory terms for Venezuelans, specifically veneco and veneca. Using a dataset of 5.7 million tweets from Colombian users between 2015 and 2021, we determined the proportion of tweets containing those terms. We observed a high prevalence of xenophobic and defamatory language correlated with the …
Towards Nlp-Based Conceptual Modeling Frameworks, David Shuttleworth, Jose Padilla
Towards Nlp-Based Conceptual Modeling Frameworks, David Shuttleworth, Jose Padilla
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
This paper presents preliminary research using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to support the development of conceptual modeling frameworks. NLP-based frameworks are intended to lower the barrier of entry for non-modelers to develop models and to facilitate communication across disciplines considering simulations in research efforts. NLP drives conceptual modeling in two ways. Firstly, it attempts to automate the generation of conceptual models and simulation specifications, derived from non-modelers’ narratives, while standardizing the conceptual modeling process and outcome. Secondly, as the process is automated, it is simpler to replicate and be followed by modelers and non-modelers. This allows for using a common …

Although Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises to deliver ever more user-friendly consumer applications, recent mishaps involving fake information and biased treatment serve as vivid reminders of the pitfalls of AI. AI can harbor latent biases and flaws that can cause harm in diverse and unexpected ways. It is crucial to understand the reasons for, mechanisms behind, and circumstances under which AI can fail. For instance, a lack of commonsense reasoning can lead to biased or unfair decisions made by Machine Learning (ML) systems. For example, if an ML system is trained on data that is biased or unrepresentative of the real …

Students' reflective writings in gross anatomy provide a rich source of complex emotions experienced by learners. However, qualitative approaches to evaluating student writings are resource heavy and timely. To overcome this, natural language processing, a nascent field of artificial intelligence that uses computational techniques for the analysis and synthesis of text, was used to compare health professional students' reflections on the importance of various regions of the body to their own lives and those of the anatomical donor dissected. A total of 1365 anonymous writings (677 about a donor, 688 about self) were collected from 132 students. Binary and trinary …

Large language models (LLMs) excel in providing natural language responses that sound authoritative, reflect knowledge of the context area, and can present from a range of varied perspectives. Agent-based models and simulations consist of simulated agents that interact within a simulated environment to explore societal, social, and ethical, among other, problems. Simulated agents generate large volumes of data and discerning useful and relevant content is an onerous task. LLMs can help in communicating agents' perspectives on key life events by providing natural language narratives. However, these narratives should be factual, transparent, and reproducible. Therefore, we present a structured narrative prompt …

Social media platforms are one of the primary resources for information as it is easily accessible, low in cost, and provides a high rate of information spread. Online social media (OSM) have become the main source of news information around the world, but because of the distributed nature of the web, it has increased the risk of fake news spread. Fake news is misleading information that is published as real news. Therefore, identifying fake news and flagging them as such, as well as detecting sources that generate them is an ongoing task for researchers and OSM companies. Bots are artificial …

A Structure-Aware Generative Adversarial Network For Bilingual Lexicon Induction, Bocheng Han, Qian Tao, Lusi Li, Zhihao Xiong
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Bilingual lexicon induction (BLI) is the task of inducing word translations with a learned mapping function that aligns monolingual word embedding spaces in two different languages. However, most previous methods treat word embeddings as isolated entities and fail to jointly consider both the intra-space and inter-space topological relations between words. This limitation makes it challenging to align words from embedding spaces with distinct topological structures, especially when the assumption of isomorphism may not hold. To this end, we propose a novel approach called the Structure-Aware Generative Adversarial Network (SA-GAN) model to explicitly capture multiple topological structure information to achieve accurate …

Creating Data From Unstructured Text With Context Rule Assisted Machine Learning (Craml), Stephen Meisenbacher, Peter Norlander
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Popular approaches to building data from unstructured text come with limitations, such as scalability, interpretability, replicability, and real-world applicability. These can be overcome with Context Rule Assisted Machine Learning (CRAML), a method and no-code suite of software tools that builds structured, labeled datasets which are accurate and reproducible. CRAML enables domain experts to access uncommon constructs within a document corpus in a low-resource, transparent, and flexible manner. CRAML produces document-level datasets for quantitative research and makes qualitative classification schemes scalable over large volumes of text. We demonstrate that the method is useful for bibliographic analysis, transparent analysis of proprietary data, …

Background: Publication of registered clinical trials is a critical step in the timely dissemination of trial findings. However, a significant proportion of completed clinical trials are never published, motivating the need to analyze the factors behind success or failure to publish. This could inform study design, help regulatory decision-making, and improve resource allocation. It could also enhance our understanding of bias in the publication of trials and publication trends based on the research direction or strength of the findings. Although the publication of clinical trials has been addressed in several descriptive studies at an aggregate level, there is a lack …
Identification Of Factors Contributing To Traffic Crashes By Analysis Of Text Narratives, Cristian D. Arteaga-Sanchez
Identification Of Factors Contributing To Traffic Crashes By Analysis Of Text Narratives, Cristian D. Arteaga-Sanchez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The fatalities, injuries, and property damage that result from traffic crashes impose a significant burden on society. Current research and practice in traffic safety rely on analysis of quantitative data from crash reports to understand crash severity contributors and develop countermeasures. Despite advances from this effort, quantitative crash data suffers from drawbacks, such as the limited ability to capture all the information relevant to the crashes and the potential errors introduced during data collection. Crash narratives can help address these limitations, as they contain detailed descriptions of the context and sequence of events of the crash. However, the unstructured nature …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Trigger Action Programs (TAPs) are event-driven rules that allow users to automate smart-devices and internet services. Users can write TAPs by specifying triggers and actions from a set of predefined channels and functions. Despite its simplicity, composing TAPs can still be challenging for users due to the enormous search space of available triggers and actions. The growing popularity of TAPs is followed by the increasing number of supported devices and services, resulting in a huge number of possible combinations between triggers and actions. Motivated by such a fact, we improve our prior work and propose RecipeGen++, a deep-learning-based approach that …

Prediction of a user’s influence level on social networks has attracted a lot of attention as human interactions move online. Influential users have the ability to influence others’ behavior to achieve their own agenda. As a result, predicting users’ level of influence online can help to understand social networks, forecast trends, prevent misinformation, etc. The research on user influence in social networks has attracted much attention across multiple disciplines, from social sciences to mathematics, yet it is still not well understood. One of the difficulties is that the definition of influence is specific to a particular problem or a domain, …

Towards Making Transformer-Based Language Models Learn How Children Learn, Yousra Mahdy
Towards Making Transformer-Based Language Models Learn How Children Learn, Yousra Mahdy
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Transformer-based Language Models (LMs), learn contextual meanings for words using a huge amount of unlabeled text data. These models show outstanding performance on various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. However, what the LMs learn is far from what the meaning is for humans, partly due to the fact that humans can differentiate between concrete and abstract words, but language models make no distinction. Concrete words are words that have a physical representation in the world such as “chair”, while abstract words are ideas such as “democracy”. The process of learning word meanings starts from early childhood when children acquire their …
Leveraging Context Patterns For Medical Entity Classification, Garrett Johnston
Leveraging Context Patterns For Medical Entity Classification, Garrett Johnston
Computer Science Senior Theses
The ability of patients to understand health-related text is important for optimal health outcomes. A system that can automatically annotate medical entities could help patients better understand health-related text. Such a system would also accelerate manual data annotation for this low-resource domain as well as assist in down- stream medical NLP tasks such as finding textual similarity, identifying conflicting medical advice, and aspect-based sentiment analysis. In this work, we investigate a state-of-the-art entity set expansion model, BootstrapNet, for the task of medical entity classification on a new dataset of medical advice text. We also propose EP SBERT, a simple model …

Incorporating Spatial Relationship Information In Signal-To-Text Processing, Jeremy Elon Davis
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation outlines the development of a signal-to-text system that incorporates spatial relationship information to generate scene descriptions. Existing signal-to-text systems generate accurate descriptions in regards to information contained in an image. However, to date, no signalto- text system incorporates spatial relationship information. A survey of related work in the fields of object detection, signal-to-text, and spatial relationships in images is presented first. Three methodologies followed by evaluations were conducted in order to create the signal-to-text system: 1) generation of object localization results from a set of input images, 2) derivation of Level One Summaries from an input image, and …

In this study, we introduce a new network feature for detecting suicidal ideation from clinical texts and conduct various additional experiments to enrich the state of knowledge. We evaluate statistical features with and without stopwords, use lexical networks for feature extraction and classification, and compare the results with standard machine learning methods using a logistic classifier, a neural network, and a deep learning method. We utilize three text collections. The first two contain transcriptions of interviews conducted by experts with suicidal (n=161 patients that experienced severe ideation) and control subjects (n=153). The third collection consists of interviews conducted by experts …

We developed a crop characteristic extraction framework. Starting from a custom SpaCy named entity recognition model, we added pre-trained word embeddings and a part-of-speech based entity expansion post-processing step. Then, we implemented an evaluation framework that functioned as a 5-fold cross validation wrapper for SpaCy custom training. Preliminary results showed improvement in the extraction framework after these additions.
Temporal Disambiguation Of Relative Temporal Expressions In Clinical Texts Using Temporally Fine-Tuned Contextual Word Embeddings., Amy L. Olex
Theses and Dissertations
Temporal reasoning is the ability to extract and assimilate temporal information to reconstruct a series of events such that they can be reasoned over to answer questions involving time. Temporal reasoning in the clinical domain is challenging due to specialized medical terms and nomenclature, shorthand notation, fragmented text, a variety of writing styles used by different medical units, redundancy of information that has to be reconciled, and an increased number of temporal references as compared to general domain texts. Work in the area of clinical temporal reasoning has progressed, but the current state-of-the-art still has a ways to go before …

During the past decade, drug abuse continues to accelerate towards becoming the most severe public health problem in the United States. The ability to detect drugabuse risk behavior at a population scale, such as among the population of Twitter users, can help to monitor the trend of drugabuse incidents. However, traditional methods do not effectively detect drugabuse risk behavior in tweets, mainly due to the sparsity of such tweets and the noisy nature of tweets. In the first part of this dissertation work, the task of classifying tweets as containing drugabuse risk behavior or not, is studied. Millions of public …

Learning Intermediate Representations For Question Answering Systems, Zakery T. Clarke
Computer Science ETDs
Question answering systems are models that can perform natural language processing (NLP) on a question, retrieve an answer from a datasource, and communicate it to a user. In question answering systems, it is important for the system to learn an underlying representation for a piece of text. There are many systems that have achieved incredible accuracy on question answering datasets such as the Stanford Question and Answer Dataset (SQuAD), but these systems often encode their knowledge in a manner that is impossible to verify. Many current models would benefit more from verifiability, than marginal accuracy improvements.
We propose a method …

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is one of the most attractive technologies in many applications in real-life. Sentiment analysis, which has devoted to know others' think or feel about an experience or an item and hence take an action, is one of the most developed area in both academia and industry. Among sentiment analysis, fine-grained aspect sentiment analysis attempts to analyze emotional attitude categorized into different aspects or features of an(a) experience/service/product. Although aspect level sentiment analysis could provide more useful information, the proposed models' performance were relative poor compared with document-level or sentence-level sentiment analysis due to the lack of …

Multi-Modal Classification Using Images And Text, Stuart J. Miller, Justin Howard, Paul Adams, Mel Schwan, Robert Slater
SMU Data Science Review
This paper proposes a method for the integration of natural language understanding in image classification to improve classification accuracy by making use of associated metadata. Traditionally, only image features have been used in the classification process; however, metadata accompanies images from many sources. This study implemented a multi-modal image classification model that combines convolutional methods with natural language understanding of descriptions, titles, and tags to improve image classification. The novelty of this approach was to learn from additional external features associated with the images using natural language understanding with transfer learning. It was found that the combination of ResNet-50 image …
