Bayesian Optimization For Refining Object Proposals, With An Application To Pedestrian Detection, Anthony D. Rhodes May 2017

Bayesian Optimization For Refining Object Proposals, With An Application To Pedestrian Detection, Anthony D. Rhodes

Student Research Symposium

We devise an algorithm using a Bayesian optimization framework in conjunction with contextual visual data for the efficient localization of objects in still images. Recent research has demonstrated substantial progress in object localization and related tasks for computer vision. However, many current state-of-the-art object localization procedures still suffer from inaccuracy and inefficiency, in addition to failing to successfully leverage contextual data. We address these issues with the current research.

Our method encompasses an active search procedure that uses contextual data to generate initial bounding-box proposals for a target object. We train a convolutional neural network to approximate an offset distance …

Malware Detection Using The Index Of Coincidence, Bhavna Gurnani

Master's Projects

In this research, we apply the Index of Coincidence (IC) to problems in malware analysis. The IC, which is often used in cryptanalysis of classic ciphers, is a technique for measuring the repeat rate in a string of symbols. A score based on the IC is applied to a variety of challenging malware families. We nd that this relatively simple IC score performs surprisingly well, with superior results in comparison to various machine learning based scores, at least in some cases.

Biological sequence datasets are increasing at a prodigious rate. The volume of data in these datasets surpasses what is observed in many other fields of science. New developments wherein metagenomic DNA from complex bacterial communities is recovered and sequenced are producing a new kind of data known as metagenomic data, which is comprised of DNA fragments from many genomes. Developing a utility to analyze such metagenomic data and predict the sample class from which it originated has many possible implications for ecological and medical applications. Within this document is a description of a series of analytical techniques used to process …

Presenting A Labelled Dataset For Real-Time Detection Of Abusive User Posts, Hao Chen, Susan Mckeever, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2017

Presenting A Labelled Dataset For Real-Time Detection Of Abusive User Posts, Hao Chen, Susan Mckeever, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

Social media sites facilitate users in posting their own personal comments online. Most support free format user posting, with close to real-time publishing speeds. However, online posts generated by a public user audience carry the risk of containing inappropriate, potentially abusive content. To detect such content, the straightforward approach is to filter against blacklists of profane terms. However, this lexicon filtering approach is prone to problems around word variations and lack of context. Although recent methods inspired by machine learning have boosted detection accuracies, the lack of gold standard labelled datasets limits the development of this approach. In this work, …

Classifying Pattern Formation In Materials Via Machine Learning, Lukasz Burzawa, Shuo Liu, Erica W. Carlson Aug 2016

Classifying Pattern Formation In Materials Via Machine Learning, Lukasz Burzawa, Shuo Liu, Erica W. Carlson

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Scanning probe experiments such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) on strongly correlated materials often reveal complex pattern formation that occurs on multiple length scales. We have shown in two disparate correlated materials that the pattern formation is driven by proximity to a disorder-driven critical point. We developed new analysis concepts and techniques that relate the observed pattern formation to critical exponents by analyzing the geometry and statistics of clusters observed in these experiments and converting that information into critical exponents. Machine learning algorithms can be helpful correlating data from scanning probe experiments to theoretical models …

Data Driven Low-Bandwidth Intelligent Control Of A Jet Engine Combustor, Nathan L. Toner Aug 2016

Data Driven Low-Bandwidth Intelligent Control Of A Jet Engine Combustor, Nathan L. Toner

Open Access Dissertations

This thesis introduces a low-bandwidth control architecture for navigating the input space of an un-modeled combustor system between desired operating conditions while avoiding regions of instability and blow-out. An experimental procedure is discussed for identifying regions of instability and gathering sufficient data to build a data-driven model of the system's operating modes. Regions of instability and blow-out are identified experimentally and a data-driven operating point classifier is designed. This classifier acts as a map of the operating space of the combustor, indicating regions in which the flame is in a "good" or "bad" operating mode. A data-driven predictor is also …

Eeg Interictal Spike Detection Using Artificial Neural Networks, Howard J. Carey Iii Jan 2016

Eeg Interictal Spike Detection Using Artificial Neural Networks, Howard J. Carey Iii

Theses and Dissertations

Epilepsy is a neurological disease causing seizures in its victims and affects approximately 50 million people worldwide. Successful treatment is dependent upon correct identification of the origin of the seizures within the brain. To achieve this, electroencephalograms (EEGs) are used to measure a patient’s brainwaves. This EEG data must be manually analyzed to identify interictal spikes that emanate from the afflicted region of the brain. This process can take a neurologist more than a week and a half per patient. This thesis presents a method to extract and process the interictal spikes in a patient, and use them to reduce …

Evaluating The Intrinsic Similarity Between Neural Networks, Stephen Charles Ashmore Dec 2015

Evaluating The Intrinsic Similarity Between Neural Networks, Stephen Charles Ashmore

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

We present Forward Bipartite Alignment (FBA), a method that aligns the topological structures of two neural networks. Neural networks are considered to be a black box, because neural networks contain complex model surface determined by their weights that combine attributes non-linearly. Two networks that make similar predictions on training data may still generalize differently. FBA enables a diversity of applications, including visualization and canonicalization of neural networks, ensembles, and cross-over between unrelated neural networks in evolutionary optimization. We describe the FBA algorithm, and describe implementations for three applications: genetic algorithms, visualization, and ensembles. We demonstrate FBA's usefulness by comparing a …

A Comparative Study Of Two Prediction Models For Brain Tumor Progression, Deqi Zhou, Loc Tran, Jihong Wang, Jiang Li, Karen O. Egiazarian (Ed.), Sos S. Agaian (Ed.), Atanas P. Gotchev (Ed.)

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

MR diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) technique together with traditional T1 or T2 weighted MRI scans supplies rich information sources for brain cancer diagnoses. These images form large-scale, high-dimensional data sets. Due to the fact that significant correlations exist among these images, we assume low-dimensional geometry data structures (manifolds) are embedded in the high-dimensional space. Those manifolds might be hidden from radiologists because it is challenging for human experts to interpret high-dimensional data. Identification of the manifold is a critical step for successfully analyzing multimodal MR images.

We have developed various manifold learning algorithms (Tran et al. 2011; Tran et al. …

Convergence Of A Reinforcement Learning Algorithm In Continuous Domains, Stephen Carden Aug 2014

Convergence Of A Reinforcement Learning Algorithm In Continuous Domains, Stephen Carden

In the field of Reinforcement Learning, Markov Decision Processes with a finite number of states and actions have been well studied, and there exist algorithms capable of producing a sequence of policies which converge to an optimal policy with probability one. Convergence guarantees for problems with continuous states also exist. Until recently, no online algorithm for continuous states and continuous actions has been proven to produce optimal policies. This Dissertation contains the results of research into reinforcement learning algorithms for problems in which both the state and action spaces are continuous. The problems to be solved are introduced formally as …

Interception of a moving object with an autonomous robot is an important problem in robotics. It has various application areas, such as in an industrial setting where products on a conveyor would be picked up by a robotic arm, in the military to halt intruders, in robotic soccer (where the robots try to get to the moving ball and try to block an opponent's attempt to pass the ball), and in other challenging situations. Interception, in and of itself, is a complex task that demands a system with target recognition capability, proper navigation and actuation toward the moving target. There …

Stfu Noob!: Predicting Crowdsourced Decisions On Toxic Behavior In Online Games, Jeremy Blackburn, Haewoon Kwak Apr 2014

Stfu Noob!: Predicting Crowdsourced Decisions On Toxic Behavior In Online Games, Jeremy Blackburn, Haewoon Kwak

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One problem facing players of competitive games is negative, or toxic, behavior. League of Legends, the largest eSport game, uses a crowdsourcing platform called the Tribunal to judge whether a reported toxic player should be punished or not. The Tribunal is a two stage system requiring reports from those players that directly observe toxic behavior, and human experts that review aggregated reports. While this system has successfully dealt with the vague nature of toxic behavior by majority rules based on many votes, it naturally requires tremendous cost, time, and human efforts. In this paper, we propose a supervised learning approach …
