XGBoost and Shapley Additive exPlanation values ranked the importance of factors influencing cross-sectional episodic memory in the full sample and by sex and …
Machine Learning Based Medical Ultrasound Image Classification And Grad-Cam Interpretation, Victoria C. Hemphill
Machine Learning Based Medical Ultrasound Image Classification And Grad-Cam Interpretation, Victoria C. Hemphill
All Theses
This work takes a step in creating a diagnostic tool for the classification decision process of Achilles tendinopathy using ultrasound images. An attention-based multiple instance learning model is developed to classify the images. Typically, doctors capture multiple ultrasound images of the Achilles tendon during a study to determine a complete diagnosis. Multiple instance models adopt this behavior by providing a single label for a set of instances (images). The images are grouped into ”bags” at the study level and passed into the model. The MIL model then uses its attention property to assign an importance score to each image to …

Freqllm: Frequency-Aware Large Language Models For Time Series Forecasting, Shunan Wang, Min Gao, Zongwei Wang, Yibing Bai, Feng Jiang, Guansong Pang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently shown promise in Time Series Forecasting (TSF) by effectively capturing intricate time-domain dependencies. However, our preliminary experiments reveal that standard LLM-based approaches often fail to capture global correlations, limiting predictive performance. We found that embedding frequency-domain signals smooths weight distributions and enhances structured correlations by clearly separating global trends (low-frequency components) from local variations (high-frequency components). Building on these insights, we propose FreqLLM, a novel framework that integrates frequency-domain semantic alignment into LLMs to refine prompts for improved time series analysis. By bridging the gap between frequency signals and textual embeddings, FreqLLM effectively captures …

Multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) has demonstrated remarkable success in collaborative tasks, yet faces significant challenges in scaling to complex scenarios requiring sustained planning and coordination across long horizons. While hierarchical approaches help decompose these tasks, they typically rely on hand-crafted subtasks and domain-specific knowledge, limiting their generalizability. We present L2M2, a novel hierarchical framework that leverages large language models (LLMs) for high-level strategic planning and MARL for low-level execution. L2M2 enables zero-shot planning that supports both end-to-end training and direct integration with pre-trained MARL models. Experiments in the VMAS environment demonstrate that L2M2's LLM-guided MARL achieves superior performance while requiring …

Benford's Law In Basic Rnn And Long Short-Term Memory And Their Associations, Farshad Ghassemi Toosi
Department of Computer Science Publications
Benford's Law describes the distribution of numerical patterns, specifically focusing on the frequency of the leading digit in a set of natural numbers. It divides these numbers into nine groups based on their first digit, with the largest category comprising numbers beginning with 1, followed by those starting with 2, and so on. Each neuron within a neural network (NN) is associated with a numerical value called a weight, which is updated according to specific functions. This research examines the Degree of Benford's Law Existence (DBLE) across two language model methodologies: (1) recurrent neural networks (RNNs) and (2) long short-term …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) is a cornerstone of optimization with applications across numerous domains. However, the development and evaluation of MILP-solving algorithms are hindered by existing benchmark datasets, which are often limited in scale, lack diversity, and are poorly structured, making them inadequate for systematic testing across different solving approaches, especially for machine learning (ML)-based methods. To address these issues, we introduce MILPBench, a large-scale benchmark suite comprising 100,000 MILP instances organized into 60 well-categorized classes. Using structural properties and embedding similarity metrics, we developed a novel classification framework to ensure both intra-class homogeneity and inter-class diversity. In addition to …

Predicting consumers’ purchase intention of browsed products enables sellers to implement nuanced promotion strategies to stimulate purchase. But how can we predict consumers’ purchase intention of browsed products? Our research demonstrates that consumers’ eye movement data collected when they browse products can serve this aim. We train and test the prediction model using logistic regression and random forest algorithms. Using data collected in a laboratory experiment, our empirical results show that both algorithms perform much better than a random guess, and the logistic regression performs slightly better than the random forest. Our findings imply that eye movement data enable sellers …

Computational Complexity Of Soundness Verification For Neural Networks, Scott Sirri
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Neural networks are an increasingly ubiquitous tool in systems of varying complexity across a range of domains. While these tools can be used to learn and predict complex functions, their opaque nature limits the scope of their acceptable applications. In particular, a lack of performance guarantees means that they are unsuitable for safety-critical applications such as self-driving cars and scheduling systems. Neural networks trained to solve NP-complete problems, in particular, are unlikely to be able to solve the problem exactly. However, a weaker soundness guarantee may be sufficient for some systems, e.g., that positive instances of the problem may be …

Identification Of Subtypes Of Post-Stroke And Neurotypical Gait Behaviors Using Neural Network Analysis Of Gait Cycle Kinematics, Andrian Kuch, Nicolas Schweighofer, James M. Finley, Alison Mckenzie, Yuxin Wen, Natalia Sánchez
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Gait impairment post-stroke is highly heterogeneous. Prior studies classified heterogeneous gait patterns into subgroups using peak kinematics, kinetics, or spatiotemporal variables. A limitation of this approach is the need to select discrete features in the gait cycle. Using continuous gait cycle data, we accounted for differences in magnitude and timing of kinematics. Here, we propose a machine-learning pipeline combining supervised and unsupervised learning. We first trained a Convolutional Neural Network and a Temporal Convolutional Network to extract features that distinguish impaired from neurotypical gait. Then, we used unsupervised time-series k-means and Gaussian Mixture Models to identify gait clusters. We tested …

Satellite Reorientation Using Reinforcement Learning Under Unknown Attitude Failure, Matthew Willoughby
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This study presents a reinforcement learning (RL) approach for reestablishing communication with deep-space satellites under unknown attitude determination and control system (ADCS) failures. When traditional fault-tolerant control methods cannot restore signal, the proposed RL controller acts as a last-resort measure by autonomously reorienting the satellite’s antenna toward Earth while charging the battery via solar panels. A generic reward function, designed for the RL-based method, enables the controller to adapt to diverse failure scenarios, including severe actuator noise, misalignment, and complete actuator failure. Simulations are conducted in the Basilisk environment and trained with the tonic framework and demonstrate ranging capabilities of …

Machine Learning Methods For Hypervelocity Fragment Flyout Characterization, Katharine Larsen
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Resulting from breakup events, such as collisions and explosions, hypervelocity fragments create potential hazards for both terrestrial and on-orbit environments, such as terrestrial weapons explosions and satellite breakup events, respectively. To avoid unnecessary damage, an accurate understanding or characterization of hypervelocity fragmentation events is vital. Currently, publicly available two-line elements collected from on-orbit breakup events are limited, excluding pre-detonation parent body conditions, such as orientation, and information of smaller fragments. The uncertainty of these datasets varies between each collected set. Therefore, the overall goal of this work is to employ machine learning to estimate distribution characteristics of a space debris …
