Scalable Feature Selection And Extraction With Applications In Kinase Polypharmacology, Derek Jones
Scalable Feature Selection And Extraction With Applications In Kinase Polypharmacology, Derek Jones
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
In order to reduce the time associated with and the costs of drug discovery, machine learning is being used to automate much of the work in this process. However the size and complex nature of molecular data makes the application of machine learning especially challenging. Much work must go into the process of engineering features that are then used to train machine learning models, costing considerable amounts of time and requiring the knowledge of domain experts to be most effective. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate data driven approaches to perform the feature selection and extraction steps in …
Deep Neural Networks For Multi-Label Text Classification: Application To Coding Electronic Medical Records, Anthony Rios
Deep Neural Networks For Multi-Label Text Classification: Application To Coding Electronic Medical Records, Anthony Rios
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Coding Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) with diagnosis and procedure codes is an essential task for billing, secondary data analyses, and monitoring health trends. Both speed and accuracy of coding are critical. While coding errors could lead to more patient-side financial burden and misinterpretation of a patient’s well-being, timely coding is also needed to avoid backlogs and additional costs for the healthcare facility. Therefore, it is necessary to develop automated diagnosis and procedure code recommendation methods that can be used by professional medical coders.
The main difficulty with developing automated EMR coding methods is the nature of the label space. The …

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications
Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have continued to be efficient models in solving classification problems. In this paper, we explore the use of an ANN with a small dataset to accurately classify whether Filipino call center agents’ pronunciations are neutral or not based on their employer’s standards. Isolated utterances of the ten most commonly used words in the call center were recorded from eleven agents creating a dataset of 110 utterances. Two learning specialists were consulted to establish ground truths and Cohen’s Kappa was computed as 0.82, validating the reliability of the dataset. The first thirteen Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) were …

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications
Electronic nose (e-nose) devices have received considerable attention in the field of sensor technology because of their many potential uses such as in identification of toxic wastes, monitoring air quality, examining odors in infected wounds and in inspection of food. Notwithstanding the vast amount of literature on the usage of e-noses for specific purposes, the technology originally and ultimately aims to mimic the capability of mammals to discriminate odors from all sorts of objects. This study demonstrates the theoretical and practical feasibility of designing an e-nose towards general odor classification. A multi-sensor array hardware unit was carefully constructed for data …
Sports Analytics With Computer Vision, Colby T. Jeffries
Sports Analytics With Computer Vision, Colby T. Jeffries
Senior Independent Study Theses
Computer vision in sports analytics is a relatively new development. With multi-million dollar systems like STATS’s SportVu, professional basketball teams are able to collect extremely fine-detailed data better than ever before. This concept can be scaled down to provide similar statistics collection to college and high school basketball teams. Here we investigate the creation of such a system using open-source technologies and less expensive hardware. In addition, using a similar technology, we examine basketball free throws to see whether a shooter’s form has a specific relationship to a shot’s outcome. A system that learns this relationship could be used to …

Graph-Based Latent Embedding, Annotation And Representation Learning In Neural Networks For Semi-Supervised And Unsupervised Settings, Ismail Ozsel Kilinc
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Machine learning has been immensely successful in supervised learning with outstanding examples in major industrial applications such as voice and image recognition. Following these developments, the most recent research has now begun to focus primarily on algorithms which can exploit very large sets of unlabeled examples to reduce the amount of manually labeled data required for existing models to perform well. In this dissertation, we propose graph-based latent embedding/annotation/representation learning techniques in neural networks tailored for semi-supervised and unsupervised learning problems. Specifically, we propose a novel regularization technique called Graph-based Activity Regularization (GAR) and a novel output layer modification called …
Automatic Music Transcription With Convolutional Neural Networks Using Intuitive Filter Shapes, Jonathan Sleep
Automatic Music Transcription With Convolutional Neural Networks Using Intuitive Filter Shapes, Jonathan Sleep
Master's Theses
This thesis explores the challenge of automatic music transcription with a combination of digital signal processing and machine learning methods. Automatic music transcription is important for musicians who can't do it themselves or find it tedious. We start with an existing model, designed by Sigtia, Benetos and Dixon, and develop it in a number of original ways. We find that by using convolutional neural networks with filter shapes more tailored for spectrogram data, we see better and faster transcription results when evaluating the new model on a dataset of classical piano music. We also find that employing better practices shows …
Rating By Ranking: An Improved Scale For Judgement-Based Labels, Jack O'Neill, Sarah Jane Delany, Brian Mac Namee
Rating By Ranking: An Improved Scale For Judgement-Based Labels, Jack O'Neill, Sarah Jane Delany, Brian Mac Namee
Conference papers
Labels representing value judgements are commonly elicited using an interval scale of absolute values. Data collected in such a manner is not always reliable. Psychologists have long recognized a number of biases to which many human raters are prone, and which result in disagreement among raters as to the true gold standard rating of any particular object. We hypothesize that the issues arising from rater bias may be mitigated by treating the data received as an ordered set of preferences rather than a collection of absolute values. We experiment on real-world and artificially generated data, finding that treating label ratings …

Machine Learning Based Protein Sequence To (Un)Structure Mapping And Interaction Prediction, Sumaiya Iqbal
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Proteins are the fundamental macromolecules within a cell that carry out most of the biological functions. The computational study of protein structure and its functions, using machine learning and data analytics, is elemental in advancing the life-science research due to the fast-growing biological data and the extensive complexities involved in their analyses towards discovering meaningful insights. Mapping of protein’s primary sequence is not only limited to its structure, we extend that to its disordered component known as Intrinsically Disordered Proteins or Regions in proteins (IDPs/IDRs), and hence the involved dynamics, which help us explain complex interaction within a cell that …

Evaluation Of Supervised Machine Learning For Classifying Video Traffic, Farrell R. Taylor
Evaluation Of Supervised Machine Learning For Classifying Video Traffic, Farrell R. Taylor
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Operational deployment of machine learning based classifiers in real-world networks has become an important area of research to support automated real-time quality of service decisions by Internet service providers (ISPs) and more generally, network administrators. As the Internet has evolved, multimedia applications, such as voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), gaming, and video streaming, have become commonplace. These traffic types are sensitive to network perturbations, e.g. jitter and delay. Automated quality of service (QoS) capabilities offer a degree of relief by prioritizing network traffic without human intervention; however, they rely on the integration of real-time traffic classification to identify applications. Accordingly, …

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prediction Through Heart Rate Variability Analysis, Luke Joseph Plewa
Master's Theses
The increase in popularity for wearable technologies (see: Apple Watch and Microsoft Band) has opened the door for an Internet of Things solution to healthcare. One of the most prevalent healthcare problems today is the poor survival rate of out-of hospital sudden cardiac arrests (9.5% on 360,000 cases in the USA in 2013). It has been proven that heart rate derived features can give an early indicator of sudden cardiac arrest, and that providing an early warning has the potential to save many lives. Many of these new wearable devices are capable of providing this warning through their heart rate …

MODVIS Workshop
In this work we deal with the problem of designing and developing computational vision models – comparable to the early stages of the human development – using coarse low-level information.
More specifically, we consider a binary classification setting to characterize biological movements with respect to non-biological dynamic events. To this purpose, our model builds on top of the optical flow estimation, and abstract the representation to simulate the limited amount of visual information available at birth. We take inspiration from known biological motion regularities explained by the Two-Thirds Power Law, and design a motion representation that includes different low-level features, …

Every year thousands of people are involved in traffic accidents, some of which are fatal. An important percentage of these fatalities are caused by human error, which could be prevented by increasing the awareness of drivers and the autonomy of vehicles. Since driver assistance systems have the potential to positively impact tens of millions of people, the purpose of this research is to study the micro-Doppler characteristics of vulnerable urban traffic components, i.e. pedestrians and bicyclists, based on information obtained from radar backscatter, and to develop a classification technique that allows automatic target recognition with a vehicle integrated system. For …

Curiosity of human nature drives us to explore the origins of what makes each of us different. From ancient legends and mythology, Mendel's law, Punnett square to modern genetic research, we carry on this old but eternal question. Thanks to technological revolution, today's scientists try to answer this question using easily measurable gene expression and other profiling data. However, the exploration can easily get lost in the data of growing volume, dimension, noise and complexity. This dissertation is aimed at developing new machine learning methods that take data from different classes as input, augment them with knowledge of feature relationships, …

Proper assessment of Operator Functional State (OFS) and appropriate workload modulation offer the potential to improve mission effectiveness and aviation safety in both overload and under-load conditions. Although a wide range of research has been devoted to building OFS assessment models, most of the models are based on group statistics and little or no research has been directed towards model individualization, i.e., tuning the group statistics based model for individual pilots. Moreover, little emphasis has been placed on monitoring whether the pilot is disengaged during low workload conditions. The primary focus of this research is to provide a real-time engagement …
