The integration of generative AI tools in game design education offers promising ways to streamline the grading, assessment, and feedback processes that are typically labor-intensive. In game design programs, faculty often deal with varied file formats, including 3D models, executable prototypes, videos, and complex game design documents. Traditional methods of assessment and feedback, primarily text-based, struggle to provide timely and actionable insights for students. Furthermore, only a small percentage of top students consistently review and apply feedback, leading to inefficiencies. This article explores how generative AI tools can augment these processes by automating aspects of grading, generating more personalized and …
Efficient Anomaly Detection Driven By Different Machine Learning Architectures And Models, William Marfo
Efficient Anomaly Detection Driven By Different Machine Learning Architectures And Models, William Marfo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The rapid growth and ubiquitous adoption of the internet and cyber-physical systems (CPS) have fundamentally transformed modern communication, work, and human-system interactions. While networks now form the backbone of critical digital ecosystems, enabling seamless data transmission across diverse, interconnected systems, this increased connectivity also expands the attack surface, making real-time detection of network intrusions and anomalies a pressing challenge. Detecting unusual activities within network infrastructure requires advanced data traffic analysis to differentiate between legitimate and malicious interactions. Traditional approaches to network anomaly detectionâ??such as rule-based and signature-based systemsâ??often depend on predefined patterns to identify known anomalies, limiting their effectiveness against …

OBJECTIVES: Artificial intelligence (AI) proceeds through an iterative and evaluative process of development, use, and refinement which may be characterized as a lifecycle. Within this context, stakeholders can vary in their interests and perceptions of the ethical issues associated with this rapidly evolving technology in ways that can fail to identify and avert adverse outcomes. Identifying issues throughout the AI lifecycle in a systematic manner can facilitate better-informed ethical deliberation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed existing lifecycles from within the current literature for ethical issues of AI in healthcare to identify themes, which we relied upon to create a lifecycle …

The emergence of AI-powered Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, presents both opportunities and challenges for higher education, particularly regarding academic integrity in writing instruction. This exploratory study examines a novel pedagogical approach that integrates LLMs as required feedback tools in a university-level psychology writing assignment. The exclusive online approach emphasizes improvement through revision, requiring students to obtain AI-generated feedback on ungraded initial drafts based on an instructor-provided rubric, with final assessment focused on the quality of subsequent revisions. Analysis of survey data from 39 undergraduate students, incorporating both quantitative measures and qualitative responses, revealed several …

This review paper provides a conceptualization of AI-assisted content moderation with various degrees of autonomy and summarizes experimental evidence for how different levels of automation in content moderation and related losses of autonomy affect individuals and groups. Our results show that current research predominantly focuses on individuallevel effects, necessitating a shift toward understanding the impact on groups. The study highlights gaps in exploring different levels of AI-assisted moderation interventions and misalignments of different conceptualizations that make comparing research results difficult. The discussion underscores the prevailing emphasis on harmful content removal and advocates for investigating more constructive moderation techniques, emphasizing the …

Today’s AI systems are not built to have reciprocal interplay with their environments and thus they demonstrate little interest in emergence, adaptation or developing mutually productive relationships with the natural world. Is a different kind of AI possible? How can artists contribute to its development? In this essay, I will discuss ways in which the arts might help guide us towards a new kind of AI, built upon adaptive conversation (i.e. shared construction of meaning) with nature. I will discuss how can work with AI while also challenging its prevailing ontology, and even suggest alternative ontologies and epistemologies. I will …

Left, Then Right Internal Carotid Artery Dissection: A Case Report, Jeffrey M. Kalczynski, John Douds, Michael E. Silverman
SKMC Student Presentations and Publications
INTRODUCTION: We present a unique case of a patient who presented to the emergency department with stroke-like symptoms found to have a spontaneous, left-sided internal carotid artery dissection (ICAD).
CASE REPORT: The patient was treated successfully with thrombectomy and subsequently developed contralateral symptoms caused by a right-sided ICAD. This was managed with a second contra-lateral thrombectomy. The patient's course was complicated by persistent and mild hypotension, postulated to be secondary to bilateral carotid baroreceptor trauma from the dissections.
CONCLUSION: This case highlights the importance of close neurological monitoring for patients, preferably in a neurologic critical care setting, during and after …

Despite the importance of discussions over the epistemic role that artificially intelligent decision support systems ought to play, there is currently a lack of these discussions in both the AI literature and the epistemology literature. My goal in this paper is to rectify this by proposing an account of the epistemic role of AI decision support systems in medicine and discussing what this epistemic role means with regard to how these systems ought to be utilized. In particular, I argue that AI decision support systems are not epistemic superiors, inferiors, or peers. Instead, I recommend that they be classified in …

Diabetes is a major health care challenge, affecting 10% of the global population. One third of patients with diabetes have an ocular complication known as diabetic retinopathy (DR). DR progression to manifestations such as vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (VTDR) remains the leading cause of blindness in working-aged adults. Yearly DR screening is a universally recommended practice in primary care settings for patients with diabetes, but it is often difficult to implement due to a lack of staffing and screening capacity in primary care. This case study highlights our experience with developing a medical artificial intelligence (AI) software-as-a-medical-device (SaMD) solution for DR …

The principles of "fail fast, fail small" have emerged as critical in modern software and system design. By planning for minor, manageable failures instead of catastrophic breakdowns, developers can ensure that systems degrade gracefully, maintaining functionality even when encountering issues. This article delves into strategies for designing resilient systems, beginning with the concept of slow degradation and distributed systems that prioritize core functions while allowing non-critical components to fail without significant user impact. The Netflix recommendation engine serves as a prime example of a system that continues to operate under failure conditions. Chaos engineering, a proactive methodology for stress-testing system …

Federated learning (FL) is a method of training AI systems on different datasets without sharing data. The promise of FL is to enable AI systems to be trained on data, including personal data, while preserving data privacy and confidentiality, and thus, inter alia, facilitate compliance with data protection legislation. FL has generated a considerable interest amongst the computer science community, yet there is a dearth of legal analysis of FL. This is a problem because the question of whether FL facilitates compliance with data protection legislation is a legal question. This article will fill this lacuna by providing a comprehensive …

Soil moisture is a critical parameter that significantly impacts the global energy balance, including the hydrologic cycle, land–atmosphere interactions, soil evaporation, and plant growth. Currently, soil moisture is typically measured by installing sensors in the ground or through satellite remote sensing, with data retrieval facilitated by reanalysis models such as the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS). However, the suitability of these methods for capturing local-scale variabilities is insufficiently validated, particularly in regions like South Korea, where land surfaces are highly complex and heterogeneous. In contrast, artificial intelligence …
